Understanding Hunter Sprinkler Heads
Types of Hunter Heads
Hunter offers several series of rotary and spray heads, each designed for specific applications. The most common series include the PGP (Professional Grade Pop‑up), I‑20 (mid‑range rotary), MP Rotator (high‑efficiency rotating nozzles), and the Pro‑Spray line for fixed‑pattern spray heads. Rotary heads such as the PGP and I‑20 feature adjustable arcs and radius settings, while MP Rotators adjust radius through nozzle selection and arc through the built‑in adjustment screw. Fixed‑pattern spray heads typically allow only radius changes via nozzle swaps.
Key Components
Every adjustable Hunter head shares a few core parts: the body that houses the drive mechanism, the nozzle that determines flow rate and radius, the arc adjustment screw (often a set‑screw on the side of the body), and the radius adjustment collar or nozzle retainer that lets you change the throw distance. Knowing where each component sits on your specific model makes the adjustment process faster and reduces the risk of damaging the head.
Why Adjust Arc and Radius?
The arc controls how many degrees the head rotates, while the radius determines how far the water reaches. Properly setting both ensures that each zone receives the intended precipitation rate without overlapping or leaving gaps. Over‑watering wastes resources and can cause fungal diseases; under‑watering leads to brown patches and stressed plants. Adjusting these parameters also helps you comply with local water‑use regulations and can lower your utility bill by eliminating unnecessary runoff.
Tools and Materials Needed
- Adjustable wrench or 7/16‑inch socket (for nozzle changes)
- Flat‑head screwdriver (for arc set‑screw)
- Hunter adjustment key (often supplied with the head)
- Pressure gauge (to verify system pressure)
- Measuring tape or laser distance meter
- Marker flags or landscape paint (to mark coverage boundaries)
- Protective gloves and safety glasses
Safety Precautions
Before you begin, shut off the main water supply to the irrigation zone and relieve any residual pressure by opening a downstream valve. Wear gloves to protect your hands from sharp edges and safety glasses to guard against debris. If the system is powered by a controller, set the zone to “off” or “manual” to prevent accidental activation while you work. Never force a set‑screw beyond its travel limit; doing so can strip the threads and require a full head replacement.
Step‑by‑Step: Adjusting the Arc
- Locate the arc adjustment screw. On most PGP and I‑20 models it is a small set‑screw on the side of the body, often marked with “ARC” or a directional arrow.
- Insert the adjustment key or a flat‑head screwdriver. Turn the screw clockwise to decrease the arc (narrower spray) and counter‑clockwise to increase it (wider spray). Each click typically changes the arc by 5–10 degrees.
- Set the desired arc. Use a protractor or the built‑in degree markings on the head (if present) to verify the angle. For a full‑circle head, set the arc to 360°; for a half‑circle, set to 180°.
- Test the arc. Turn the zone on briefly and observe the rotation. The head should stop precisely at the start and end points you set.
- Fine‑tune if necessary. Make small adjustments until the spray pattern matches your landscape design. Record the final setting for future reference.
Step‑by‑Step: Adjusting the Radius
- Identify the radius adjustment method. On rotary heads, radius is changed by swapping the nozzle or by turning the radius collar. MP Rotators use a nozzle‑specific radius; you must replace the nozzle to change throw distance.
- Select the appropriate nozzle. Consult the Hunter performance chart for your model. Nozzles are labeled by flow rate (GPH) and radius (feet). Choose a nozzle that matches the required precipitation rate for the zone.
- Remove the existing nozzle. Use the adjustable wrench to unscrew the nozzle retainer. Pull the old nozzle straight out.
- Install the new nozzle. Insert the new nozzle into the retainer, ensuring the O‑ring seats properly. Tighten the retainer by hand, then give it a final snug turn with the wrench—do not overtighten.
- Adjust the radius collar (if applicable). Some models have a rotatable collar that fine‑tunes the throw by a few feet. Rotate the collar clockwise to reduce radius, counter‑clockwise to increase.
- Verify coverage. Run the zone and measure the actual throw distance with a tape measure. Adjust the collar or swap to a different nozzle until the measured radius matches the design specification.
Fine‑Tuning for Uniform Coverage
After setting arc and radius individually, walk the zone and look for dry spots or excessive overlap. Use marker flags to outline the actual wetted area. If you see gaps, increase the radius on the adjacent head or widen the arc slightly. If you see heavy overlap, reduce the radius or narrow the arc. Aim for a head‑to‑head spacing where the edge of one head’s pattern just touches the edge of the next. This “matched precipitation” approach delivers consistent soil moisture and maximizes water efficiency. (See Also:How To Cap A Hunter Sprinkler Head)
Comparison Table: Hunter Models vs. Adjustment Methods
| Model Series | Arc Adjustment | Radius Adjustment | Typical Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| PGP (Professional Grade Pop‑up) | Set‑screw on body (5–10° per click) | Nozzle swap + optional radius collar | Residential & light commercial lawns |
| I‑20 (Mid‑range Rotary) | Set‑screw on body (5° per click) | Nozzle swap; no collar | Medium‑size turf, sports fields |
| MP Rotator | Integrated adjustment screw (continuous) | Fixed per nozzle; change nozzle for radius | High‑efficiency landscapes, slopes |
| Pro‑Spray (Fixed‑pattern Spray) | Not adjustable (fixed pattern) | Nozzle swap only | Small beds, shrub borders |
Tips and Best Practices
- Adjust heads early in the morning when wind is minimal; this gives the most accurate visual of the spray pattern.
- Keep a log of each head’s arc and nozzle size; it speeds up future maintenance and winterization.
- Use a pressure gauge at the zone valve to confirm the system operates within the manufacturer’s recommended range (typically 30–50 psi for rotary heads).
- When swapping nozzles, clean the nozzle seat and O‑ring to prevent leaks.
- Group heads with similar precipitation rates on the same zone to avoid over‑ or under‑watering.
- Periodically check for clogged nozzles, especially after fertilizing or heavy rain events.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Over‑tightening the arc set‑screw. This strips the threads and makes future adjustments impossible. Stop when you feel firm resistance.
- Using the wrong nozzle size. A nozzle that delivers too much flow for the zone pressure creates misting and reduces radius.
- Ignoring pressure variations. If the zone pressure drops after adjustments, the radius will shrink unexpectedly. Verify pressure after each change.
- Setting arcs that overlap excessively. Overlap wastes water and can cause soil erosion. Aim for just‑touching edges.
- Forgetting to re‑pressurize the system. After adjustments, run the zone for a full cycle to confirm stable operation.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
If a head fails to rotate, check for debris in the drive gear or a seized arc screw. Clean the gear with compressed air and lubricate lightly with silicone spray. If the radius is shorter than expected despite the correct nozzle, verify that the zone pressure meets the nozzle’s minimum requirement; low pressure is the most common cause. Leaks around the nozzle retainer usually indicate a damaged O‑ring—replace it before re‑installing the nozzle. For MP Rotators that stall, ensure the inlet filter screen is clean; a clogged screen restricts flow and stops rotation.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I adjust my Hunter sprinkler heads?
Inspect and adjust at the start of each irrigation season and after any major landscape changes. Routine checks every 4–6 weeks during peak use help catch drift caused by soil settlement or vibration.
Can I adjust the arc without turning off the water?
It is strongly recommended to shut off the zone. Adjusting under pressure can cause the set‑screw to slip, leading to inaccurate settings and potential injury from sudden water discharge.
What nozzle do I need for a 30‑foot radius on a PGP head?
Consult the Hunter PGP performance chart. Typically a 3.0 GPH nozzle at 40 psi yields roughly a 30‑foot throw. Always verify with a pressure gauge at the head. (See Also:How Many Types Of Sprinkler)
Why does my head spray in a partial circle even though I set it to 360°?
The arc screw may be stuck or the internal stop pin could be damaged. Disassemble the head, clean the stop mechanism, and ensure the screw moves freely through the full 360° range.
Is it necessary to use the Hunter adjustment key?
The key provides the correct torque and prevents stripping the set‑screw. A flat‑head screwdriver works in a pinch, but the key is the safest tool for repeated adjustments.
