By the end of this article you will know How to Adjust a Toro Sprinkler Head? confidently, recognize the tools required, avoid common pitfalls, and keep your system running efficiently season after season.

Understanding Toro Sprinkler Heads

Toro manufactures a wide range of rotary and spray heads designed for residential, commercial, and sports‑field applications. Each series shares a common operating principle: water pressure drives a turbine or gear mechanism that rotates the nozzle, distributing water in a predictable pattern. Knowing the basics of how your specific head works makes the adjustment process intuitive and reduces the chance of damaging internal components.

Most Toro heads feature an adjustable arc collar and a radius (or throw) screw. The arc collar determines the sweep angle, while the radius screw controls how far the water travels. Some models also include a pressure‑regulating stem that maintains consistent performance across varying supply pressures. Familiarity with these parts is the first step toward precise irrigation management.

Types of Toro Sprinkler Heads

Toro’s product line can be grouped into three broad categories: fixed‑spray heads, rotary heads, and high‑efficiency rotary heads. Fixed‑spray heads emit a constant fan‑shaped pattern and are ideal for small, uniform areas. Rotary heads, such as the 570 and 570Z series, rotate through a set arc and are suited for medium to large lawns. High‑efficiency rotary heads, like the Precision Series, incorporate pressure‑compensating technology to deliver uniform coverage even when supply pressure fluctuates.

Each category uses a slightly different adjustment mechanism. Fixed‑spray heads typically have a simple set‑screw for radius, while rotary heads feature a rotating collar for arc and a separate radius screw. High‑efficiency models may include a tool‑less adjustment knob for both parameters. Identifying which category your head belongs to ensures you apply the correct technique.

Key Components

The main components you will interact with during adjustment are the nozzle, arc adjustment collar, radius adjustment screw, and the riser or body that houses the internal turbine. The nozzle determines the flow rate and pattern; it often screws onto the head and can be swapped for different precipitation rates. The arc collar is usually a knurled ring that rotates to set the sweep angle, marked in degrees. The radius screw, often a hex or slotted set‑screw, threads into the body and moves the nozzle forward or backward to change throw distance.

On pressure‑compensating models, a small diaphragm or spring assembly sits behind the nozzle. This component should not be tampered with during routine arc or radius changes. If you suspect a pressure‑regulation issue, consult the manufacturer’s service manual rather than attempting a field adjustment.

Tools and Materials Needed

Before you begin, gather the following items to make the job smooth and safe:

  • Adjustable wrench or 7/16‑inch socket (for nozzle removal)
  • Flat‑head screwdriver (for radius screw on many models)
  • Hex key set (typically 3/16‑inch for arc collar on 570 series)
  • Bucket or towel (to catch residual water)
  • Gloves (optional, for grip and cleanliness)
  • Toro head adjustment guide or manufacturer’s spec sheet (for reference)

Having these tools on hand eliminates trips back to the garage and reduces the risk of stripping screws or damaging the nozzle threads.

Safety Precautions

Always shut off the main water supply to the irrigation zone before working on any head. Pressurized water can cause the nozzle to eject forcefully, leading to injury or property damage. If your system has a manual bleed valve, open it to relieve residual pressure. Wear eye protection when removing nozzles, as debris or a sudden spray can cause eye irritation. Finally, ensure the controller is set to “off” or the zone is disabled to prevent the system from cycling while you are adjusting.

How to Adjust a Toro Sprinkler Head?

The following step‑by‑step procedure applies to most Toro rotary heads, including the 570, 570Z, and Precision series. Adjustments are made with the water off, then verified with a brief test run.

Step 1: Locate the Head

Walk the zone and identify the head that needs adjustment. Mark its position with a small flag or landscape paint so you can return to it quickly after the water is turned off. Note the current arc and radius settings if they are visible on the collar or screw; this gives you a baseline for comparison. (See Also:How To Drain Sprinkler System)

Step 2: Turn Off Water Supply

Close the zone valve at the controller or the main shut‑off valve for the irrigation system. Open the manual bleed valve on the zone manifold to release any trapped pressure. Verify that no water is flowing by briefly activating the zone from the controller; the head should remain static.

Step 3: Remove the Nozzle

Using the adjustable wrench or socket, unscrew the nozzle counter‑clockwise. Place the nozzle in a clean container to avoid losing the small O‑ring that seals the connection. Inspect the nozzle for clogs or wear; clean or replace it if necessary before reinstallation.

Step 4: Adjust the Arc

Locate the arc adjustment collar. On the 570 series, insert the 3/16‑inch hex key into the collar’s set‑screw and turn clockwise to decrease the arc or counter‑clockwise to increase it. Each click typically represents a 10‑degree change. On the Precision series, rotate the tool‑less knob until the indicator aligns with the desired degree marking. Refer to the head’s specification sheet for the exact arc range (commonly 40°–360°).

Step 5: Adjust the Radius

Find the radius adjustment screw on the side of the head body. Insert the flat‑head screwdriver (or hex key if the model uses a hex screw) and turn clockwise to shorten the throw or counter‑clockwise to lengthen it. Make small increments—about a quarter turn—then re‑attach the nozzle temporarily to test the throw distance. Repeat until the water reaches the target area without overspray.

Step 6: Reinstall Nozzle and Test

Thread the nozzle back onto the head, tightening it snugly but not overtightening, which can damage the threads. Close the bleed valve, reopen the zone valve, and run the zone for a minute. Observe the spray pattern: the arc should match your setting, and the radius should land where intended. Fine‑tune as needed, then secure the head in place.

Adjusting Specific Models

While the general procedure is similar, each Toro series has nuances that affect the adjustment technique. Understanding these differences prevents frustration and ensures optimal performance.

Toro 570 Series

The 570 series uses a hex‑key adjustable arc collar and a slotted radius screw. The arc collar features a detent every 10°, providing tactile feedback. The radius screw is accessed from the side of the body and moves the nozzle assembly linearly. Because the 570 lacks pressure compensation, verify that the zone pressure is within the recommended 30–50 psi range before finalizing adjustments.

Toro 570Z Series

The 570Z adds a pressure‑regulating stem that maintains consistent flow across 25–70 psi. The arc adjustment is identical to the 570, but the radius screw is a hex‑type rather than slotted, requiring a 3/16‑inch hex key. The pressure regulator means you can adjust radius without worrying about pressure‑induced throw changes, but you should still confirm the zone pressure is stable.

Toro Precision Series

Precision heads feature a tool‑less arc knob and a radius dial that clicks in 1‑foot increments. Both adjustments can be made by hand, which speeds up field work. The integrated pressure‑compensating diaphragm automatically adjusts flow, so radius changes are more predictable. However, the nozzle is proprietary; only Toro Precision nozzles should be used to maintain warranty and performance.

Tips and Best Practices

  • Adjust heads early in the morning when wind is minimal; this gives the most accurate visual assessment of spray pattern.
  • Make one adjustment at a time—arc first, then radius—to isolate the effect of each change.
  • Keep a log of each head’s final settings (arc degrees, radius feet) for future reference and seasonal re‑calibration.
  • Use a pressure gauge on the zone manifold to confirm operating pressure matches the head’s specifications before finalizing adjustments.
  • Replace worn nozzles annually; a degraded nozzle can mimic mis‑adjustment symptoms.
  • When adjusting multiple heads on a zone, work from the farthest head toward the controller to avoid walking through wet spray.

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

One frequent error is adjusting the arc while the system is pressurized. This can cause the collar to slip, resulting in an inaccurate setting and potential damage to the detent mechanism. Always ensure the water is off and pressure relieved before turning any adjustment screw.

Another mistake is over‑tightening the nozzle after reinstallation. Excessive torque strips the threads and can crack the nozzle body. Hand‑tighten plus a quarter turn with the wrench is sufficient.

Ignoring the pressure‑compensation feature on 570Z and Precision models leads to unnecessary radius tweaking. If the zone pressure is within spec, the head will self‑regulate; only adjust radius if the throw is genuinely short or long. (See Also:How To Fix A Water Sprinkler Leak)

Finally, failing to clean the nozzle filter before reassembly can cause uneven spray that looks like a mis‑adjusted arc. A quick rinse under running water removes debris and restores pattern integrity.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

If a head rotates but the arc does not change after adjustment, the arc collar set‑screw may be stripped. Replace the collar or the entire head if the damage is severe. When the radius screw turns but throw distance remains unchanged, check for a seized nozzle stem; lubricate with silicone spray and work the screw gently.

Uneven coverage across a zone often stems from mismatched nozzle precipitation rates. Verify that all heads on the zone use the same nozzle size and type. If a single head consistently over‑sprays, reduce its radius or install a lower‑flow nozzle.

Water hammer or loud banging when the zone shuts off indicates excessive pressure or a missing check valve. Install a pressure‑regulating valve upstream or add a check valve to the head to mitigate the issue.

Maintenance Tips for Longevity

Schedule a full system inspection at the start of each irrigation season. During this walk‑through, verify each head’s arc and radius, clean nozzles, and check for leaks at the riser connections. Lubricate the arc collar detents with a light silicone grease to prevent corrosion and ensure smooth rotation.

Winterize the system in cold climates by blowing out the lines with compressed air. This prevents freeze damage that can crack the head body and render adjustments impossible. Store any removed nozzles in a labeled bag for easy reinstallation in spring.

Keep a spare set of common nozzles and adjustment tools in your irrigation toolkit. Quick access reduces downtime when a head fails or a landscape change demands immediate re‑configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I adjust my sprinkler heads?

Adjustments are typically needed only when landscape changes occur—new plantings, hardscape additions, or after a head has been physically bumped. A seasonal check at spring start‑up is sufficient for most residential systems. (See Also:Does Sprinkler Irrigation Save Water)

Can I adjust a head while the system is running?

No. Adjusting under pressure is unsafe and can damage the adjustment mechanism. Always shut off the zone and relieve pressure before making any changes.

What should I do if a head is stuck and won’t rotate?

First, ensure the water is off. Remove the nozzle and inspect the turbine for debris. Clean the internal screen and apply a small amount of silicone lubricant to the rotating shaft. If the head still binds, the internal gear may be damaged and the head should be replaced.

Do I need special tools for adjustment?

Most Toro heads require only a 3/16‑inch hex key, a flat‑head screwdriver, and an adjustable wrench. The Precision series can be adjusted by hand. No proprietary tools are required for routine arc and radius changes.

How do I adjust heads on sloped terrain?

On slopes, set the radius slightly shorter on the uphill side to prevent overspray onto hardscapes, and slightly longer on the downhill side to compensate for gravity‑assisted throw. Use a pressure gauge to confirm uniform pressure across the zone, as elevation changes can cause pressure variation.
