Understanding Your Dewalt Weed Eater Trimmer Head

Dewalt produces a wide range of corded and cordless weed eaters for both residential and commercial use, and most models use one of two primary trimmer head designs: bump-feed or autofeed. Knowing which type of head your model has is critical to successfully completing How to Add String to Dewalt Weed Eater?, as the loading process and internal mechanism differ significantly between the two. Bump-feed heads are the most common on entry-level and mid-range Dewalt models, and require you to tap the bottom of the head on the ground to release more line as it wears down during use. Autofeed heads, found on higher-end Dewalt models, automatically advance the line when you release the trigger, eliminating the need to bump the head on hard surfaces. While autofeed heads are more convenient during operation, they require more precise alignment when loading new line to function correctly.

Tools and Materials You’ll Need

Before you start the process of How to Add String to Dewalt Weed Eater?, gather these simple tools and materials to avoid interruptions mid-project. Most of these items are likely already in your garage or tool shed:

• Replacement trimmer line (correct diameter for your Dewalt model – check your owner’s manual or the existing line for size, most models use 0.080” or 0.095” line)
• Scissors or heavy-duty trimmer line cutter
• Flathead screwdriver (for models with a screw-secured spool cover)
• Clean, dry rag
• Work gloves (to protect your hands from sharp line edges)

Optional tools that make loading easier include a line winding tool, which helps you coil the line evenly to prevent tangles, and a small stiff brush to clear out grass and debris from the head cavity before loading new line. Avoid using old, frayed replacement line, as it will break easily during use and cause frequent jams.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Add String to Dewalt Weed Eater

This guide works for nearly all Dewalt weed eater models, with minor adjustments for bump-feed and autofeed heads noted where applicable. Follow these steps in order to load your trimmer line quickly and avoid common errors. (See Also:How To Rethread A Homelite Weed Eater)

1. Prepare your weed eater for loading. Start by disconnecting the power source to avoid accidental startup: unplug corded models from the outlet, or remove the battery pack from cordless models and store it in a cool, dry place away from the work area. Lay the trimmer on a flat, stable surface, and put on your work gloves. Use your rag to wipe away any built-up grass, mud, or debris from the bottom of the trimmer head, as this debris can interfere with the line feeding mechanism after you load new line. If your model has a removable spool, set it aside on a clean surface to avoid losing small parts.
2. Remove the old trimmer line. Locate the release latch or button on the bottom or side of the trimmer head – this is usually marked with a small arrow or the word “open.” Press or slide the latch to release the spool cover, then carefully lift the cover off to expose the spool of old line. If the line is tangled or stuck to the spool, use your flathead screwdriver to gently pry it loose. Pull the old line off the spool, and discard it. For models with a fixed, non-removable spool, wind the old line off the spool by hand, or cut it off with your scissors if it is too tangled to remove cleanly. Take this opportunity to wipe out the head cavity with your rag to remove any leftover grass or broken line fragments.
3. Load the new trimmer line. This step varies slightly by head type. For bump-feed heads: Cut two equal lengths of trimmer line, each 1.5 times the length of the old line you removed. Insert one end of each line into the small holes on opposite sides of the spool, then wind the lines tightly around the spool in the direction indicated by the arrow printed on the spool (almost always clockwise for Dewalt models). Leave 6-8 inches of line hanging out of each hole, then slide the spool back into the head cavity, tucking the loose ends into the notches on the side of the cavity to hold them in place. For autofeed heads: Cut a single length of trimmer line equal to 1.5 times the length of the old line. Insert one end of the line into the small hole on the side of the spool, then wind the line tightly around the spool in the direction of the arrow on the spool. Leave 6-8 inches of line hanging out of the exit hole on the side of the head, then slide the spool back into the cavity, making sure the line is properly seated in the feed mechanism notches to allow smooth advancement.
4. Reassemble and test the trimmer. Once the new line is loaded onto the spool and seated in the head cavity, align the spool cover with the notches on the head body, then press down firmly until you hear a click, indicating the latch is fully engaged. Reattach the battery pack or plug the trimmer back in, then test it in a safe, open area away from people and pets. For bump-feed heads, tap the bottom of the head on the ground a few times to confirm the line advances properly with each tap. For autofeed heads, squeeze and release the trigger a few times to confirm the line advances automatically without jamming. If the line does not feed, turn off the trimmer immediately, disassemble the head, and check that the line is wound tightly and seated correctly in the feed notches. Adjust as needed before resuming use.

Bump Feed vs. Autofeed: Loading Comparison

One of the most common questions people have when researching How to Add String to Dewalt Weed Eater? is whether bump-feed or autofeed heads are easier to load for beginners. The table below breaks down the key differences between the two head types to help you understand what to expect when loading your specific model.

Pro Tips for Longer Trimmer Line Life

Once you’ve mastered the process of How to Add String to Dewalt Weed Eater?, use these pro tips to extend the life of your trimmer line and reduce how often you need to reload it:

• Always use the exact diameter of trimmer line recommended for your Dewalt model. Using line that is too thick will strain the trimmer motor and cause it to overheat, while line that is too thin will break easily and jam the feed mechanism.
• Wind the line tightly around the spool when loading. Loose winding leads to tangles and jams, which will shorten the life of your line and require you to reload much sooner than expected.
• Store extra trimmer line in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. UV exposure and high heat can make the line brittle, causing it to break easily during use.
• Avoid trimming against hard surfaces like concrete, stone, or tree trunks. Impact with these surfaces will snap the line and wear it down much faster than cutting grass alone.
• If you notice the line is wearing down unevenly, check that the trimmer head is not bent or damaged. A misaligned head will cause the line to wear unevenly, leading to more frequent reloads and poor cutting performance.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Loading String

Even experienced DIYers make mistakes when learning How to Add String to Dewalt Weed Eater? at first. Avoid these common errors to save time and prevent damage to your trimmer:

• Winding the line in the wrong direction: Almost all Dewalt trimmer spools are marked with a small arrow indicating the correct winding direction (almost always clockwise). Winding the line backward will prevent it from feeding properly, and can cause the spool to jam inside the head, requiring full disassembly to fix.
• Using line that is the wrong size: This is the most common cause of jams and poor performance after loading. Always check your owner’s manual or the existing line on your trimmer to confirm the correct diameter before purchasing replacement line.
• Leaving too little or too much line hanging out: Leave 6-8 inches of line hanging out of the feed holes when loading. Too little line will not catch on the feed mechanism and will not advance when you bump the head or squeeze the trigger, while too much line can tangle inside the head cavity and cause jams.
• Forgetting to clear debris from the head cavity: Old grass, mud, and broken line fragments left in the head cavity will cause new line to jam, even if you load it correctly. Always wipe out the cavity with a clean rag before installing a new spool.
• Over-tightening the spool cover: Press the cover down firmly until you hear a click, but do not force it. Over-tightening can crack the plastic cover or damage the internal feed mechanism, leading to costly repairs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I replace my Dewalt weed eater string?

There is no fixed timeline for replacing trimmer line, as it depends on how frequently you use your weed eater and what type of vegetation you are cutting. For light residential use (trimming grass once a week), you will likely need to reload your line every 2-3 months. For heavy use (cutting thick weeds, brush, or using the trimmer daily for commercial work), you may need to reload every 2-4 weeks. Inspect your line before each use: if it is frayed, broken, or worn down to less than 3 inches long, it is time to reload.

What size trimmer line does my Dewalt use?

The most common trimmer line sizes for Dewalt weed eaters are 0.080” and 0.095” diameter. The correct size for your model is listed in your owner’s manual, and is also printed on the side of the existing spool if you still have the original line installed. Using the wrong size line is the most common cause of jams and poor cutting performance after loading, so always confirm the correct size before purchasing replacement line. Can I use third-party trimmer line in my Dewalt?

Yes, you can use third-party trimmer line in your Dewalt weed eater, as long as it matches the correct diameter for your model. Many third-party lines are just as durable as official OEM Dewalt line, and cost significantly less over time. Avoid very cheap, low-quality line, as it is prone to breaking and jamming, which can damage your trimmer’s feed mechanism and motor over time.

Why does my trimmer line jam after loading?

Trimmer line jams after loading are almost always caused by one of three issues: incorrect line size, line wound in the wrong direction, or debris left in the head cavity. First, confirm you are using the correct diameter line for your model. Next, check that you wound the line tightly in the direction of the arrow on the spool. Finally, remove the spool and wipe out the head cavity to remove any old grass or broken line fragments. If you still experience jams after checking these three things, inspect the feed mechanism for damage, and contact Dewalt customer support if your trimmer is still under warranty.

Do I need safety gear for string replacement?

While loading trimmer line is a low-risk task, it is still a good idea to wear basic safety gear. Work gloves will protect your hands from the sharp edges of trimmer line, which can cause deep cuts if handled carelessly. If you are testing the trimmer after loading, wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from debris thrown up by the line. Always disconnect the power source before starting the loading process to avoid accidental startup.

Conclusion

Learning How to Add String to Dewalt Weed Eater? is a simple, cost-effective skill that every Dewalt owner should master. By following the step-by-step guide above, gathering the right tools, and avoiding common mistakes, you can load your trimmer line in 10 minutes or less, no professional help required.
