Why Restringing Your Husqvarna Weed Eater Matters

Restringing isn’t just a quick fix for an empty line – it offers tangible benefits for your tool, your wallet, and your lawn care results. Many users default to buying pre-strung heads for convenience, but restringing delivers better long-term value and performance for regular users.

Cost Savings vs Pre-Cut Line

Pre-strung trimmer heads cost $10 to $25 each, while a bulk spool of 0.080 or 0.095 inch line costs $8 to $15 and can restring your tool 10 to 20 times depending on usage. For regular users, that adds up to significant annual savings, and you avoid the waste of discarding entire heads when only the line is worn down. Pre-cut lines also often include extra packaging and plastic spools that end up in landfills, so restringing is a more eco-friendly choice as well.

Improved Performance and Cut Quality

Old, worn, or improperly installed line cuts less efficiently, leaving uneven patches of grass and requiring you to go over the same area multiple times. Fresh, correctly tensioned line spins smoothly, cuts through thick weeds in one pass, and reduces strain on the motor to extend the tool’s lifespan. You’ll also notice less vibration and noise when using fresh line, making yard work more comfortable.

Understanding Your Husqvarna Weed Eater Trimmer Head

Husqvarna uses three main types of trimmer heads across its gas, electric, and battery-powered models, and the restringing process varies slightly for each. Identifying your head type is the first step before you start the job to ensure you follow the correct instructions for your model.

Common Trimmer Head Models for Husqvarna

The three most common head types are bump feed, fixed line, and automatic feed. Bump feed heads, the most popular for residential models, release line when you tap the head on the ground. Fixed line heads, common on heavy-duty gas models, require manual removal of the head to replace line, and do not feed line automatically during use. Automatic feed heads, found on higher-end battery models, use a sensor to extend line as it wears, no bumping required. You can find your head type printed on the bottom of the trimmer head or listed in your owner’s manual.

Tools and Materials You’ll Need

You don’t need any specialized equipment to restring a Husqvarna weed eater. Most of these items are likely already in your garage, and no expensive tools are required for the job.

• Replacement trimmer line (correct diameter for your model, usually 0.080 inch for residential electric/battery models, 0.095 inch for heavy-duty gas models – check your manual for exact specs)
• Sharp scissors or trimmer line cutter (for clean, fray-free cuts that prevent jams)
• Flathead screwdriver (for prying open head covers and removing spools)
• Rag or work gloves (optional, to keep hands clean if line is dirty or greasy)
• Clean work surface (a table or garage floor makes it easier to keep small parts from getting lost)

You only need to buy a new pre-strung head if your current head is cracked or broken, which is rare for most residential users. A single bulk spool of line will last for dozens of restringing sessions. (See Also:How Does Weed Eater Auto Feed Work)

Step-by-Step: How Do You Restring a Husqvarna Weed Eater with a Bump Feed Head

Bump feed heads are the most common type for residential Husqvarna models, and they’re designed for quick, easy restringing without removing the entire head from the tool in most cases. Follow these steps for a smooth, jam-free installation.

1. Disconnect the power source first: For gas models, turn off the fuel valve and let the engine cool completely. Unplug electric models or remove the battery pack to prevent accidental startup while working. This is a critical safety step that prevents serious injury.
2. Locate the line release tab: On the bottom of the bump feed head, you’ll see a small tab or button that releases the spool cover. Press or slide this tab to pop off the circular cover, exposing the spool of line inside.
3. Remove the old spool and line: Pull the empty spool out of the head. If any remaining line is stuck in the spool, pull it out and discard it. Check the head for tangled line or debris, and clear it out with your finger or a small tool if needed.
4. Prepare the new line: Measure out 10 to 15 feet of new trimmer line (most bump feed heads require 10 feet, but check your manual for exact length). Cut the line cleanly with your scissors to avoid frayed ends that can jam the feed mechanism.
5. Load the line onto the spool: Thread one end of the line through the small hole in the center of the spool. Turn the spool clockwise to wind the line tightly around the spool, leaving 4 to 6 inches of line sticking out of the feed hole. Avoid overlapping the line as you wind, as this can cause jams when you bump feed.
6. Reinstall the spool: Slide the loaded spool back into the head, making sure the line feeds out through the correct slot on the side of the head. Align any tabs on the spool with the grooves in the head to lock it in place.
7. Reattach the spool cover: Snap the circular cover back onto the head until it clicks into place. Make sure it’s seated evenly, as a loose cover can cause the line to feed improperly.
8. Test the feed: Reconnect the power source (plug in, reattach battery, or start the gas engine). Tap the head on the ground while the trimmer is running to test if the line extends automatically. If it doesn’t feed, double-check that the line is threaded through the correct slot and the spool is seated properly.

Note: Some older Husqvarna bump feed models require you to remove the entire head from the drive shaft to access the spool. If you don’t see a spool cover release tab on the bottom of the head, twist the head counterclockwise to remove it from the shaft before following these steps, then reattach it tightly when you’re done.

Step-by-Step: How Do You Restring a Husqvarna Weed Eater with a Fixed Line Head

Fixed line heads are common on heavy-duty gas models designed for thick overgrowth, and they require you to remove the entire head from the tool to restring. These heads do not feed line automatically, so you’ll need to replace the entire length of line when it wears down.

1. Disconnect the power source: Turn off the fuel valve for gas models, unplug electric models, or remove the battery pack. Let gas engines cool fully before handling hot parts to avoid burns.
2. Remove the trimmer head from the drive shaft: Twist the head counterclockwise (left) to loosen it from the threaded drive shaft. You may need to hold the shaft steady with a wrench if it’s tight. Once loose, pull the head straight off the shaft.
3. Remove the spool cover and old line: On the bottom of the head, locate the small screw holding the spool cover in place. Use your flathead screwdriver to loosen the screw, then pull the cover off. Remove the empty spool and any remaining line from the head.
4. Prepare the new line: Fixed line heads usually require 15 to 20 feet of line, depending on the model. Cut the line to the correct length with your scissors for a clean, fray-free edge. For dual-line heads, cut two equal lengths of line.
5. Load the line onto the spool: Thread one end of the line through the hole in the center of the spool. Wind the line tightly around the spool in the direction indicated by the arrow on the spool (almost always clockwise for Husqvarna models). Leave 6 to 8 inches of line sticking out of the feed holes on either side of the spool, using both lengths for dual-line heads.
6. Reassemble the head: Slide the loaded spool back into the head, making sure the loose ends of the line feed out through the correct slots on the sides of the head. Replace the spool cover and tighten the screw with your screwdriver.
7. Reattach the head to the weed eater: Align the drive shaft with the opening in the head, then twist clockwise (right) to tighten it securely. Don’t overtighten, as this can crack the head or make it difficult to remove later for future restringing.
8. Test the line: Reconnect the power source and run the trimmer for a few seconds to make sure the line spins evenly and doesn’t wobble. If it wobbles, double-check that the line is wound evenly on the spool and the head is tightened properly.

How Do You Restring a Husqvarna Weed Eater with an Automatic Feed Head?

Automatic feed heads are found on Husqvarna’s premium battery-powered models like the 115iL and 535iL, and they don’t require bumping to feed line. The restringing process is similar to bump feed but has a few key differences to accommodate the automatic sensor. Learning how to restring a Husqvarna weed eater with this head type is just as easy as the other models.

1. Disconnect the battery: Always remove the battery pack first to avoid accidental startup, even if the trimmer is turned off. This is a non-negotiable safety step for all battery-powered tools.
2. Release the spool cover: Press the release tab on the bottom of the head to pop off the circular cover. Some automatic feed models have a small lever instead of a tab – consult your manual if you can’t locate the release mechanism.
3. Remove the old spool: Pull the empty spool out of the head. Clear any debris or tangled line from the head housing before proceeding to avoid jams.
4. Prepare the new line: Automatic feed heads typically require 10 feet of 0.080 inch line. Cut the line cleanly to avoid jamming the automatic feed sensor.
5. Load the line onto the spool: Thread the line through the center hole of the spool, then wind it tightly clockwise, leaving 5 inches of line sticking out of the feed hole. Unlike bump feed spools, automatic feed spools have a small notch to hold the loose end in place while you load it – make sure the line is seated in this notch to prevent it from unwinding while you reinstall the spool.
6. Reinstall the spool and cover: Slide the loaded spool into the head, align the tabs, and snap the cover back on until it clicks.
7. Test the automatic feed: Reattach the battery and run the trimmer for 10 to 15 seconds. The line should extend automatically as it wears, without needing to bump the head. If it doesn’t feed, check that the line is the correct diameter and the spool is seated properly.

Comparison of Trimmer Head Types for Restringing

Choosing the right head type for your needs can simplify restringing and improve trimming performance. Here’s a comparison of the three most common Husqvarna trimmer head types to help you decide which is best for your use case.

Tips and Best Practices for Long-Lasting Trimmer Line

Proper restringing and maintenance will extend the life of your line and reduce how often you need to restring. Follow these tips to keep your trimmer running smoothly for longer.

• Store line in a cool, dry place: Exposure to sunlight and extreme temperatures makes trimmer line brittle and prone to breaking. Keep unused spools in a sealed container in your garage or shed to prevent degradation.
• Cut line cleanly every time: Dull scissors or a frayed cut will create weak spots that break easily mid-use. A dedicated trimmer line cutter is a cheap investment that makes clean, precise cuts every time.
• Wind line evenly on the spool: Overlapping or loose winding causes jams and uneven feeding. Take an extra 30 seconds to wind the line tightly and evenly to avoid frustration later.
• Use the correct line diameter for your model: Using a thicker line than recommended puts extra strain on your weed eater’s motor, while thinner line will break too quickly and won’t cut effectively. Check your owner’s manual for the exact diameter your model requires.
• Clean the trimmer head regularly: Grass clippings, dirt, and debris can build up in the head and jam the line feed. Wipe out the head with a rag every 3 to 4 uses to keep it running smoothly.
• Don’t overfill the spool: Winding too much line onto the spool can cause it to overlap or get stuck in the feed mechanism. Stick to the recommended line length for your head type to avoid jams.
• Sharpen or replace the debris blade: If your line breaks frequently even after restringing, check the blade on the bottom of the trimmer head (if equipped). A dull blade can cut the line as it extends, so sharpen or replace it if it’s worn down.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Restringing

Even experienced users make these errors, which can lead to jams, broken line, or damage to your weed eater. Avoid these common pitfalls to make restringing faster and easier. (See Also:How To Rewind Weed Eater String)

• Forgetting to disconnect the power source: This is the most dangerous mistake, as accidental startup can cause serious injury. Always disconnect power before touching the trimmer head, even if you think the tool is off.
• Using the wrong line diameter: Using a line that’s too thick can overload the motor and cause it to burn out, while a line that’s too thin will break constantly and won’t cut through thick weeds. Double-check your manual before buying replacement line.
• Winding the line in the wrong direction: Most Husqvarna spools have an arrow indicating the correct winding direction (usually clockwise). Winding it backward will cause the line to jam or not feed properly. If you’re unsure, wind it clockwise, as this is the standard for almost all Husqvarna models.
• Leaving too little or too much line sticking out of the spool: Too little line won’t extend when you bump feed, while too much can get tangled in the head. Follow the recommended 4 to 8 inch overhang for your head type.
• Skipping the test run: Always test the line feed before you start trimming, so you don’t get stuck mid-job with a non-functional trimmer. A 10-second test run will catch any installation errors before you start working.
• Overtightening the head when reattaching: Twisting the head too tight can crack the plastic housing or make it impossible to remove later for future restringing. Tighten it until it’s snug, but don’t use excessive force.
• Using old, brittle line: Even if you have leftover line from a previous purchase, check its flexibility before using it – if it cracks when you bend it, it’s too old and will break during use.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often do I need to restring my Husqvarna weed eater?

One of the most common questions we hear is, how often do I need to restring my Husqvarna weed eater? The frequency depends on how often you use the trimmer and the thickness of the vegetation you cut. For light residential use (trimming 1 to 2 times per week), you’ll need to restring every 2 to 4 weeks. For heavy commercial use or cutting thick brush, you may need to restring after every 1 to 2 uses. You’ll know it’s time to restring when the line is worn down to less than 2 inches, breaks frequently, or doesn’t extend when you bump the head.

What size trimmer line does my Husqvarna weed eater use?

Most residential Husqvarna electric and battery-powered models use 0.080 inch diameter line, while heavy-duty gas models use 0.095 inch line. Some commercial-grade models use 0.105 inch line for extra durability. The exact size is printed on the bottom of your trimmer head and listed in your owner’s manual. Using the wrong size will lead to poor performance and can damage your tool’s motor.

Why won’t my line feed after restringing?

This is one of the most common issues after restringing, and it’s usually caused by one of a few easy fixes: first, check that the line is threaded through the correct feed slot on the head – if it’s in the wrong slot, it won’t extend. Second, make sure the spool is seated properly in the head, with all tabs aligned. Third, check that you left at least 4 inches of line sticking out of the spool to extend when you bump the head. Finally, make sure you didn’t wind the line too tightly, which can prevent it from feeding out. If all else fails, clean debris out of the feed slot with compressed air.

Can I use aftermarket trimmer line instead of Husqvarna branded line?

Yes, you can use high-quality aftermarket trimmer line as long as it matches the correct diameter for your model. Many aftermarket lines are just as durable as branded options and cost less. Just avoid cheap, low-quality line that breaks easily and frays quickly, as this will lead to more frequent restringing and potential jams. Look for UV-resistant options to extend the line’s lifespan when stored outdoors. (See Also:How To Thread String On A Weed Eater)

How long does it take to restring a Husqvarna weed eater?

Bump feed and automatic feed heads take 5–7 minutes, while fixed line heads take 8–10 minutes. First-time users may take longer as they learn the process, but practice will cut that time in half. With experience, you can restring a bump feed head in as little as 3 minutes, which is faster than driving to the hardware store to buy a pre-strung head. Many users keep a spare spool of line in their garage so they can restring on the fly if needed.
