What Is Lawn Edging, and Why Does It Matter?

Lawn edging is the process of creating a clean, sharp boundary between your grass and adjacent hardscapes like sidewalks, driveways, patios, or garden beds. It involves cutting a narrow, vertical strip of grass along these boundaries to separate the lawn from other areas of your yard. While it may seem like a small, cosmetic detail, edging has a huge impact on the overall look of your property, and it also serves several practical purposes.

Well-maintained edges do more than just make your yard look tidy. Some of the biggest benefits include:

• Boosted curb appeal: Crisp edges make your lawn look manicured and professional, even if the rest of the yard is simple. It’s one of the first things neighbors and visitors notice about your property.
• Prevent grass invasion: Edging creates a physical barrier that stops grass from spreading into garden beds, mulch areas, or cracks in your driveway. This reduces the time you spend weeding and maintaining non-lawn areas.
• Easier mowing: A clear edge gives you a visual guide for mowing, so you don’t accidentally cut into garden beds or miss strips of grass along hardscapes. It also prevents your mower deck from catching on overgrown grass, which can damage your mower.
• Reduced weed growth: Edging removes the tall grass and weeds that often grow along boundaries, which are common hosts for pests and weed seeds. A clean edge makes it harder for weeds to take root in these areas.

Weed Eater vs. Dedicated Edger: Which Is Right for You?

If you’re wondering “How Do You Edge with a Weed Eater?” you’re likely weighing whether to use the string trimmer you already own or buy a separate edging tool. Both options have their pros and cons, and the right choice depends on your lawn size, how often you edge, and your budget.

A weed eater is a great choice for edging if you have a small to medium-sized lawn (less than 1/4 acre), only need to edge occasionally (once every 3–4 weeks), or have tight spaces like corners, around trees, or near garden beds where a bulky dedicated edger won’t fit. Most modern weed eaters have an adjustable head that can be rotated to cut vertically, making them perfectly capable of creating clean edges. If you already own a weed eater, using it for edging saves you the cost of buying a separate tool, which is a big plus for budget-conscious homeowners.

A dedicated lawn edger is a better investment if you have a large lawn (over 1/4 acre), need to edge frequently (once a week or more), or have very overgrown, unkempt edges that need a deep, consistent cut. Dedicated edgers are designed specifically for edging, so they cut faster, more consistently, and to a deeper depth than most weed eaters. They’re also better for creating straight, uniform edges along long driveways or sidewalks. If you want a perfectly manicured lawn with minimal effort, a dedicated edger is worth the extra cost, but for most casual homeowners, a weed eater is more than sufficient.

Pre-Edging Prep: Gear and Setup You Can’t Skip

Proper preparation is the difference between a clean, professional edge and a ragged, uneven mess. Skipping prep steps can also lead to damage to your weed eater, injury, or extra cleanup time after you’re done. Before you start edging, make sure you have the right gear and your tool is set up correctly. (See Also:Why Does My Weed Eater String Keep Unraveling)

Weed eaters spin at high speeds, and the cutting string can break and fly, or throw debris like rocks and sticks at high velocity. Wearing the right safety gear will protect you from injury:

• Safety glasses or goggles: Protect your eyes from flying debris and grass clippings. Even a small piece of grass can cause serious eye damage if it hits you at high speed.
• Hearing protection: Weed eaters are extremely loud, and prolonged exposure can cause permanent hearing damage. Ear plugs or over-ear hearing protectors are a must.
• Closed-toe shoes and long pants: Never edge in sandals or open-toed shoes. The cutting string can easily cut through skin, and long pants protect your legs from scratches and flying debris.
• Work gloves: Gloves give you a better grip on the weed eater, and protect your hands from blisters and cuts from sharp edges or debris.

Most modern weed eaters have a simple adjustment to switch from trimming to edging. Follow these steps to set up your tool correctly:

1. Rotate the cutting head 90 degrees so the string spins vertically, parallel to the edge you’re cutting. For most models, you’ll find a release button on the head that lets you adjust the angle. If your weed eater has a dedicated “edging mode” switch, use that instead, as it will also adjust the string speed for cleaner cuts.
2. Adjust the cutting depth if your model has a depth adjustment feature. For most lawns, set the depth to 1–2 inches. If you have very overgrown edges, you can increase it to 3 inches, but avoid going deeper than that to prevent damaging grass roots.
3. Check the cutting string: use a thick, heavy-duty string (0.080 or 0.095 inches) for edging, as thin trimming string will break easily and create ragged cuts. Make sure the string is the correct length for your model – too long, and it will cut unevenly and put extra strain on the motor.

Step-by-Step Guide: How Do You Edge with a Weed Eater?

Once you have your gear and tool set up, edging is a straightforward process. Follow these steps to get clean, precise edges every time:

1. Clear and prep the area first: Remove any debris, toys, rocks, or sticks from the edge you’re edging. If your grass is long, mow it first so you can clearly see the boundary between the lawn and the hardscape or garden bed. This step prevents damage to your weed eater and reduces the risk of flying debris causing injury.
2. Position the weed eater correctly: Hold the trimmer with the bottom guard resting lightly on the ground, about 1/4 inch away from the edge of the lawn. Keep the cutting string at a 90-degree angle to the edge you’re cutting, so it cuts straight down vertically instead of at an angle. This ensures a clean, straight edge.
3. Start with straight edges first: If you’re edging along a driveway, sidewalk, or patio, start at one end of the edge. Walk slowly along the boundary, keeping the trimmer steady and at a consistent height. Let the string do the work – don’t push hard against the grass, as this can cause the string to break or dig too deep into the soil.
4. Navigate corners and curves: When you reach a 90-degree corner, stop the trimmer, lift the head slightly, and cut straight into the corner to remove any overgrown grass. Then continue edging along the next edge. For curved edges like garden beds, move slowly and use small, steady movements instead of long, sweeping strokes to maintain a consistent curve.
5. Clean up as you go: As you edge, use the trimmer to knock loose dirt and grass clippings back onto the lawn, or pause every few feet to sweep debris off the hardscape with a broom. This gives you a cleaner, more finished look and prevents debris from building up along the edge.
6. Inspect and touch up your work: Once you finish an edge, walk along it to check for any uneven spots, missed areas, or cuts that are too deep. Use a second pass to touch up problem spots, holding the trimmer slightly higher to avoid cutting deeper than intended.

Pro Tips for Flawless, Precision Edging

Once you master the basics of edging with a weed eater, these pro tips will help you get even cleaner, more professional results with less effort:

• Edge when the grass is dry: Wet grass clumps together and can cause the cutting string to grab, leading to uneven, ragged edges. Wait until the grass is completely dry, either after a few days of no rain or in the late morning after the dew has dried.
• Mark new edges before cutting: If you’re creating a new edge along a garden bed or new lawn border, use a garden hose or chalk line to mark the desired line before you start cutting. This ensures your edge is straight and consistent, especially for long runs along driveways or sidewalks.
• Use a depth guard if you have one: Many weed eaters come with a removable depth guard that prevents you from cutting too deep. Keep it attached when edging along hardscapes to avoid chipping bricks, pavers, or concrete.
• Keep the string fresh: Dull or worn cutting string pulls at grass instead of cutting it cleanly, leading to ragged edges. Replace the string every few edging sessions, or sharpen it if your model uses a replaceable blade.
• Edge in sections for large lawns: If you have a large yard, break the edging job into 10–15 minute sections, and take short breaks in between. This reduces fatigue and helps you maintain a consistent, steady hand for cleaner edges.
• Use a chalk line for straight new edges: If you’re creating a new edge along a garden bed or new lawn border, a chalk line will give you a perfectly straight guide to follow, which is much more accurate than guessing or using a garden hose for long, straight runs.

Common Edging Mistakes (and How to Fix Them)

Even experienced homeowners make these common edging mistakes. Knowing how to avoid them will save you time and frustration:

• Cutting too deep: This is the most common mistake, and it can damage grass roots, expose dirt, and make it easier for weeds to grow. To fix it, adjust your weed eater’s depth setting to 1–2 inches, or hold the trimmer higher above the ground. If you’ve already cut too deep, fill the gap with topsoil and re-seed the grass if needed to restore the lawn.
• Uneven, ragged edges: This is usually caused by dull string, moving too fast, or pushing the trimmer too hard. Fix it by replacing the cutting string, moving at a slow, consistent pace, and letting the string do the work instead of forcing it through the grass.
• Damaging hardscapes: If your string chips bricks, pavers, or concrete, you’re holding the trimmer too close to the hard surface, or you don’t have a depth guard attached. Fix this by using a depth guard, or holding the trimmer 1/2 inch further away from the hardscape. For very delicate surfaces like stamped concrete, use a manual edger instead of a weed eater.
• Edging wet grass: Wet grass clumps and causes the string to grab, leading to uneven cuts and extra strain on your weed eater’s motor. If you accidentally edge wet grass, wait for it to dry completely, then touch up any uneven spots with a second pass.

Maintaining Your Edges Long-Term

Edging is not a one-time task – to keep your lawn looking its best, you’ll need to maintain your edges regularly throughout the growing season. Here’s how to keep your edges crisp year-round: (See Also:How To Start A Stihl Gas Weed Eater)

• Edge every 2–4 weeks during the growing season: Grass grows fastest in spring and summer, so you’ll need to edge more often during these months. For fast-growing grass varieties like Bermuda or fescue, you may need to edge every 1–2 weeks. In the fall and winter, you can reduce edging to once every 6–8 weeks, as grass growth slows down.
• Touch up edges after mowing: Mowing can push grass over the edge of your sidewalk or garden bed, so do a quick touch-up with your weed eater after you mow to keep edges looking sharp.
• Deep edge once a year in spring: Over the winter, edges can become overgrown and soil can build up along the boundary. Once a year in early spring, cut your edges 1/2 inch deeper than usual to remove built-up soil and overgrown grass, giving you a fresh start for the growing season.
• Create a permanent trench for long-lasting edges: If you want edges that stay crisp with minimal maintenance, use a garden edger or trenching shovel to dig a 2–3 inch deep trench along your lawn boundaries once a year. This trench stops grass from spreading into other areas, and you’ll only need to do a light touch-up with your weed eater every few weeks to keep it looking good.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I edge with any weed eater, or do I need a special model?

Most modern string trimmers (weed eaters) can be used for edging, as long as they have an adjustable cutting head that can be rotated 90 degrees to cut vertically. Older models with fixed heads can still be used for edging, but you’ll need to hold the trimmer at an angle, which is less precise and more tiring. If your weed eater has a dedicated edging mode, that makes the process even easier, as it automatically adjusts the head position and often reduces the string speed for cleaner, more controlled cuts. Even basic, affordable weed eaters work well for edging as long as they have an adjustable head.

How deep should I cut when edging with a weed eater?

For most residential lawns, a cutting depth of 1–2 inches is ideal. This is deep enough to cut through grass and small weeds, but not so deep that you damage the grass roots or expose large amounts of dirt. If you have very overgrown edges that haven’t been maintained in months, you can cut up to 3 inches deep, but avoid going deeper than that, as it can harm the health of your lawn and create more space for weeds to grow in the exposed soil.

How often should I edge my lawn?

For most homeowners, edging every 2–4 weeks during the growing season (spring through early fall) is enough to keep edges looking crisp. If you have fast-growing grass varieties like Bermuda, zoysia, or fescue, you may need to edge every 1–2 weeks during peak growing months. In the winter, you can skip edging entirely, as grass growth slows down significantly. The key is to edge before the grass grows over the edge of your sidewalk, driveway, or garden bed – once grass has grown over the hardscape, edging becomes much harder and time-consuming.

What type of string is best for edging with a weed eater?

For edging, use a thicker, heavier-duty string than you would for regular light trimming. 0.080-inch or 0.095-inch round string is ideal for most residential edging jobs, as it is strong enough to cut through thick grass and small weeds without breaking. Avoid using thin, serrated trimming string for edging, as it breaks easily and creates ragged, uneven cuts. If you have very tough, overgrown edges with lots of thick weeds, you can use a 0.105-inch string, but make sure your weed eater is rated for that thickness to avoid damaging the motor or transmission.

Can I edge around garden beds and flower beds with a weed eater?

Yes, edging around garden beds with a weed eater is a great way to keep grass from invading your flower beds and mulch areas. When edging near plants, hold the trimmer 1–2 inches away from stems and leaves to avoid damaging them. For delicate plants or very tight spaces near shrubs, use a small manual hand edger or garden trowel to cut the edge close to the plants first, then use the weed eater for the rest of the border. Be careful not to cut into the shallow roots of perennials or shrubs when edging near them, as this can damage or kill the plants over time. (See Also:How To Remove Kobalt Weed Eater Head)
