What Is the Sprinkler Dance Move?

The sprinkler is a novelty dance move that originated in 1990s hip hop and pop culture, designed to mimic the slow, rotating motion of a lawn sprinkler spraying water across a yard. Unlike more complex dance moves that require precise footwork, rhythm, or flexibility, the sprinkler is intentionally low-effort and playful, making it accessible to people of all ages and skill levels. The core motion involves bending forward at the waist, keeping your knees slightly bent, and swinging your arms in wide, slow circles while shifting your weight side to side. It is most often performed as a solo move, but it can easily be incorporated into group choreography, line dances, or wedding dance floor routines. The sprinkler’s charm lies in its silliness: it’s not meant to look polished or professional, but rather to be fun, lighthearted, and great for getting a crowd laughing and joining in.

A Brief History of the Sprinkler Dance

While the exact origin of the sprinkler is somewhat murky, it gained mainstream popularity in the early 1990s, emerging from the same hip hop and playground dance culture that brought us the running man, the worm, and the cabbage patch. Some dance historians credit the move to 90s hip hop artists like MC Hammer, who included similar arm-swinging motions in his iconic performances and music videos, while others trace it to informal playground dances at elementary schools across the United States. Regardless of its exact origins, the sprinkler became a ubiquitous staple of 90s school dances, birthday parties, and family gatherings, and remained a popular novelty move for decades. In the 2020s, the sprinkler saw a major resurgence in popularity thanks to 90s nostalgia trends on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, where users regularly post videos of themselves doing the sprinkler at parties, weddings, and even in public spaces. It is now widely recognized as one of the most iconic party dances of all time, and is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser at any event with a casual, fun vibe.

Who Can Do the Sprinkler?

One of the best things about the sprinkler is that literally anyone can do it, no matter their age, dance experience, or physical ability. Kids as young as 5 can master the basic motion in minutes, and it’s a popular move in children’s dance classes because it doesn’t require any complex coordination. Teens and young adults love it for 90s themed parties and school events, while adults often use it as a go-to move at weddings and backyard barbecues to break the ice on the dance floor. Even seniors with limited mobility can do a modified version of the sprinkler, with smaller arm circles and a less pronounced forward lean, to participate in group dances without feeling left out. The sprinkler is also perfect for people who feel self-conscious about dancing in public: because it’s so intentionally silly, no one expects you to be good at it, so you can let loose and have fun without worrying about looking “cool.”

Prerequisites: What You Need Before You Start

Unlike many dance moves that require special equipment, studio space, or months of practice, the sprinkler has almost no prerequisites. All you need to get started is:

• Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing: Wear something that allows you to bend at the waist and swing your arms freely, like a t-shirt, hoodie, or loose dress. Avoid tight clothing that restricts your movement, or anything with long, dangling sleeves that might hit you in the face while you swing your arms.
• Flat, non-slip footwear (optional): You can do the sprinkler barefoot, in socks, or in soft-soled shoes. If you’re dancing on a hard surface like tile or wood, socks or shoes with good grip will help you avoid slipping while you shift your weight side to side.
• Enough space to move: You only need a small area, about 3 feet by 3 feet, to do the sprinkler comfortably. Make sure there’s no furniture, decorations, or other people within arm’s reach so you don’t accidentally hit anything while swinging your arms.
• A willingness to be silly: The most important prerequisite for the sprinkler is a sense of humor. The move is supposed to be fun and goofy, so don’t take it too seriously – the more you commit to the bit, the more fun you’ll have.

If you have lower back pain or limited mobility, you can also modify the move to suit your needs: bend forward less far, make smaller arm circles, or keep your weight evenly distributed on both feet instead of shifting side to side. There’s no “right” way to do the sprinkler, as long as you’re having fun and not causing yourself pain.

Step-by-Step Guide: How Do You Do the Sprinkler?

Now that you know what the sprinkler is and what you need to get started, let’s walk through the exact steps to master the basic move. Follow these instructions carefully, and you’ll be doing the sprinkler like a pro in no time.

1. Get into your starting position: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, and arms hanging loosely at your sides. Keep your core gently engaged to protect your lower back, and look forward or slightly down at a spot on the floor in front of you to avoid getting dizzy as you move. Keep your shoulders relaxed, and take a deep breath to release any tension in your body.
2. Bend forward at the waist: Slowly hinge at your hips, leaning your upper body forward until your torso is at a 45 to 60 degree angle. Keep your back straight, don’t hunch your shoulders, and let your arms hang down toward the floor naturally. Don’t bend so far forward that you feel strain in your lower back – if you feel discomfort, reduce the angle of your lean. This forward bend is the foundation of the sprinkler motion, so make sure you’re comfortable in this position before moving on.
3. Shift your weight to one foot: Put a little more weight on your right foot, lifting your left heel slightly off the ground (about an inch is enough). This small weight shift will be the starting point for the side-to-side motion of the sprinkler. Keep your knees soft and bent, don’t lock them, to maintain balance.
4. Swing your right arm in a wide circle: Lift your right arm out to the side, then swing it forward and up in a slow, wide circular motion, like you’re sprinkling water from a lawn sprinkler. Keep the movement smooth and controlled, not fast or jerky. As you swing your right arm forward, shift your weight slightly to your left foot to keep your balance. The circle should be big enough that your arm moves from your side, up over your head, and back down to your side again, but you don’t need to raise your arm higher than your head.
5. Swing your left arm in a matching circle: As your right arm completes its circle and swings back down toward your side, lift your left arm and swing it in a matching wide circle, shifting your weight back to your right foot. The two arm movements should flow continuously, like the rotating head of a lawn sprinkler. Keep the circles slow and steady, matching the pace of your weight shifts.
6. Add a subtle hip sway: As you shift your weight side to side, add a small, loose hip movement to make the motion feel more natural and fluid. Don’t overdo it – just a tiny sway side to side as you shift your weight is enough to make the move look less stiff. The sprinkler is supposed to be low-effort, so keep this movement minimal.
7. Continue the motion, then exit gracefully: Keep the alternating arm circles and weight shifts going for as long as you want. To end the move, slow your arm circles down gradually, then slowly stand back up straight, lower your arms to your sides, and return to your relaxed starting position. You can add a little wave or a bow to the crowd if you’re performing for an audience.

The key to a great sprinkler is to keep the movement smooth and continuous, just like a real lawn sprinkler rotating slowly in a yard. Don’t rush the arm circles, and don’t worry about matching the beat of the music exactly – the sprinkler works with almost any upbeat track, so move at a pace that feels comfortable for you. Common Mistakes to Avoid When Learning the Sprinkler

While the sprinkler is an easy move to learn, there are a few common mistakes that can make it look awkward, cause discomfort, or even lead to minor injury. Avoid these pitfalls to make your sprinkler look and feel as good as possible:

• Bending too far forward: This is the most common mistake new dancers make, and it can lead to lower back strain. Only bend forward to a 45 to 60 degree angle, and keep your core engaged to support your spine. If you have pre-existing back pain, reduce the angle of your lean even more, or do the move while standing almost upright with only a slight forward tilt.
• Swinging your arms too fast or too high: Fast, jerky arm movements make the sprinkler look stiff and unbalanced, and can cause you to lose your balance or hit someone nearby. Keep your arm circles slow, wide, and low to the ground, and don’t raise your arms higher than your head.
• Tensing up your shoulders or holding your breath: When people feel self-conscious, they tend to tense up their upper body and hold their breath, which makes the move look stiff and awkward. Keep your shoulders relaxed, breathe naturally, and remember that the sprinkler is supposed to be fun – the more loose and goofy you are, the better it will look.
• Looking down at your feet the entire time: Staring at the floor can make you feel dizzy and throw off your balance. Pick a spot on the wall in front of you to focus on, or look out at the crowd if you’re performing for an audience, to stay balanced and avoid feeling disoriented.
• Trying to add extra moves too soon: It’s tempting to add spins, jumps, or other fancy moves to your sprinkler right away, but this can throw off your balance and make the move look messy. Master the basic arm and weight shift motion first, then add variations once you feel comfortable with the core movement.

Tips to Perfect Your Sprinkler Technique

Once you’ve mastered the basic sprinkler motion, use these tips to take your performance to the next level and make it look even more polished and fun:

• Practice in front of a mirror first: Before you bust out the sprinkler at a party, practice in front of a full-length mirror to check your form. Make sure you’re not bending too far forward, your arm circles are smooth, and your weight shifts are balanced. This will help you feel more confident when you perform in front of other people.
• Start slow and speed up gradually: Don’t try to do fast, frantic arm circles right away. Start with slow, controlled movements, and only speed up once you have the basic motion down pat. Slow, smooth circles look much better than fast, jerky ones.
• Lean into the silliness: The sprinkler is not a serious dance move, so the best way to make it look good is to fully commit to the bit. Add an exaggerated facial expression, make big, loose movements, and don’t be afraid to laugh at yourself. The more fun you’re having, the more fun the crowd will have watching you.
• Coordinate with group members if you’re doing a routine: If you’re doing the sprinkler as part of a group dance or flash mob, practice with the other dancers to make sure your arm circles and weight shifts are timed to match. Synchronized sprinklers look much more impressive than a group of people doing the move at different speeds.
• Wear bright, eye-catching clothing if you’re performing for a crowd: If you’re doing the sprinkler at a large party or event, wear a bright color or a fun pattern so your arm movements stand out more. This will make your performance more noticeable and fun for the crowd to watch.

Variations of the Sprinkler Dance to Try

Once you’ve mastered the basic sprinkler, you can try these fun variations to add a little extra flair to your performance:

• Reverse Sprinkler: Instead of leaning forward, lean slightly backward at the waist (about 20 to 30 degrees) and swing your arms in wide circles behind you, like a sprinkler spraying water backward. This variation is great for people who have trouble bending forward, or for adding a comedic twist to your routine.
• Jumping Sprinkler: Add a small, gentle hop each time you shift your weight side to side. This makes the move more energetic and fun, perfect for upbeat songs with a fast beat.
• Slow Motion Sprinkler: Do the entire move in exaggerated slow motion, stretching each arm circle and weight shift out as long as possible. This is a hilarious variation for comedy sketches or talent shows, and always gets a big laugh from the crowd.
• Sprinkler with a Spin: After a few cycles of the basic sprinkler, add a slow 360-degree spin while continuing your arm circles, then return to the basic motion. This adds a little extra excitement without being too difficult to master.
• Group Sprinkler Wave: Gather a group of 3 or more people, and have each person start their arm circle one second after the person next to them. This creates a wave-like effect that looks great in group photos or videos.

How to Incorporate the Sprinkler Into Group Dances

The sprinkler is a versatile move that works well in almost any casual group dance setting. It’s a common staple of 90s themed line dances, where it’s often paired with the running man, the cabbage patch, and the worm to create a full nostalgic routine. At weddings, the sprinkler is a popular move during the open dance floor, especially during upbeat 90s or 2000s songs, and it’s often used as a crowd participation move where the DJ or wedding party encourages everyone on the floor to join in. The sprinkler is also a favorite for flash mobs and community events, because it’s so easy for large groups of people with varying skill levels to learn quickly. If you’re planning a group dance for a party or event, you can add the sprinkler as a fun, low-stakes moment that gets even the most shy attendees joining in on the fun.
