Understanding Orbit Sprinkler Types
Before you can adjust an Orbit sprinkler effectively, you need to identify which type of sprinkler head you are working with. Orbit manufactures several categories of sprinkler heads, each designed for different watering needs and landscape layouts. The most common types include pop-up spray heads, rotary sprinklers, and specialty nozzles such as pressure-compensating models. Recognizing the differences between these types will help you apply the correct adjustment techniques and avoid damaging components that are not meant to be modified.
Pop-Up Spray Heads
Pop-up spray heads are the most straightforward type of sprinkler and are typically used in smaller, rectangular lawn areas or along straight edges. These heads rise out of the ground when water pressure is applied and retract when the system shuts off. They generally produce a fixed spray pattern that can be adjusted for arc and distance, but they do not rotate like rotary models. Because they are simple in design, pop-up spray heads are ideal for beginners who are learning how to adjust an Orbit sprinkler for the first time.
Rotary Sprinklers
Rotary sprinklers are more advanced and are designed to cover larger circular areas. They use a gear-driven or turbine-driven mechanism to rotate a spray arm in a predetermined arc, which can range from a partial sweep to a full 360-degree circle. These sprinklers are excellent for medium to large lawns and can be precisely adjusted to avoid spraying driveways, sidewalks, or buildings. Adjusting rotary sprinklers requires a bit more patience and attention to detail, but the results are well worth the effort.
Specialty Nozzles
Orbit also offers specialty nozzles such as pressure-compensating spray nozzles and low-angle nozzles. Pressure-compensating nozzles maintain a consistent flow rate even when water pressure fluctuates, which is especially useful in areas with varying elevation. Low-angle nozzles direct water downward at a shallower angle, reducing drift and runoff on sloped terrain. Understanding the unique features of these nozzles will allow you to optimize your sprinkler system for challenging landscape conditions.
Tools You Will Need
While adjusting an Orbit sprinkler does not require specialized equipment, having a few basic tools on hand will make the process much easier and more precise. The most important tool is a small flat-head screwdriver, which is used to adjust the arc and direction of most sprinkler heads. A small container or cup is useful for catching water during testing, and a measuring tape helps you verify spray distances. Some rotary sprinklers may require an adjustment key or wrench, which is usually included in the original packaging or available from Orbit customer support.
Preparation Steps Before Adjustment
Before you begin making adjustments, take some time to prepare your workspace and gather important information about your system. Turn off the water supply to the sprinkler zone you are working on, and wait for any remaining water pressure to drain from the lines. Remove any debris or grass clippings that may have accumulated around the sprinkler head, as these can interfere with proper operation. It is also helpful to have a copy of your system’s layout plan or a mental map of which zones control which areas of your yard.
If you are working with a newly installed system, run each zone for a few minutes to ensure that all heads are functioning properly and that there are no leaks or blockages. This initial test run will also help you identify any heads that may need adjustment before you begin fine-tuning the system. Once you have completed these preparation steps, you will be ready to start adjusting your Orbit sprinkler heads with confidence.
How to Adjust Pop-Up Spray Sprinklers
Pop-up spray sprinklers are the easiest type to adjust, and they offer two primary adjustment options: arc and distance. The arc determines the width of the spray pattern, which can typically be set anywhere from 40 degrees to 360 degrees. The distance controls how far the water travels from the head, which is usually adjustable from 0 to 15 feet depending on the nozzle size and water pressure.
Adjusting the Arc
To adjust the arc of a pop-up spray sprinkler, locate the adjustment screw on top of the head. This screw is usually marked with a plus and minus sign or with degree indicators. Turning the screw clockwise will decrease the arc, narrowing the spray pattern, while turning it counterclockwise will increase the arc, widening the spray. Make adjustments gradually and check the spray pattern after each turn to ensure that you are achieving the desired coverage without overspray.
Adjusting the Distance
To adjust the distance of a pop-up spray sprinkler, look for a small screw or slot on the top or side of the nozzle. This is often referred to as the radius reduction screw. Turning this screw clockwise will reduce the distance that the water travels, while turning it counterclockwise will increase the distance. If your sprinkler does not have a radius reduction screw, you can purchase a different nozzle size that produces a shorter or longer throw. Always verify the spray distance with a measuring tape after making adjustments.
Adjusting Rotary Sprinkler Nozzles
Rotary sprinklers require a slightly different approach to adjustment because they involve both the arc of rotation and the distance of the spray. Most Orbit rotary sprinklers have two adjustment mechanisms: one for the arc and one for the direction of the sweep. The arc adjustment is typically located on top of the head and can be turned with a flat-head screwdriver or a special adjustment tool. The direction adjustment is usually found on the side of the head and allows you to set the starting point of the rotation.
Setting the Arc of Rotation
To set the arc of rotation on a rotary sprinkler, turn the adjustment screw on top of the head. Turning it clockwise will decrease the arc, while turning it counterclockwise will increase the arc. The arc can typically be adjusted from 40 degrees to a full 360 degrees. After making your adjustment, run the sprinkler for a few minutes and observe the spray pattern to confirm that it is covering the intended area without overspray. Setting the Direction
To set the direction of the rotary sprinkler’s sweep, locate the direction adjustment screw on the side of the head. This screw allows you to rotate the entire spray assembly to the left or right. Turn the screw slowly and check the direction of the spray after each adjustment. Once you have achieved the desired direction, secure the screw in place if it has a locking mechanism.
Setting Sprinkler Distance and Radius
The distance and radius of your sprinkler’s spray are critical factors in achieving even coverage across your lawn. If the spray distance is too short, you may end up with dry patches, while if it is too long, you risk watering areas where water is not needed, such as sidewalks or driveways. The ideal spray distance depends on the spacing between your sprinkler heads and the size of the area you are trying to water.
To measure the spray distance, turn on the sprinkler and use a measuring tape to determine how far the water travels from the head. Compare this measurement to the recommended spacing for your sprinkler model, which is typically listed in the product manual or on the manufacturer’s website. If the spray distance is too short, try increasing the water pressure or switching to a nozzle with a longer throw. If the spray distance is too long, reduce the pressure or install a nozzle with a shorter throw.
Aligning Spray Pattern with Landscape
One of the most important aspects of adjusting an Orbit sprinkler is aligning the spray pattern with the shape and layout of your landscape. This involves positioning the sprinkler head so that the water lands where it is needed and avoids areas where it is not, such as hard surfaces, buildings, or flower beds. Proper alignment not only conserves water but also prevents damage to your property and reduces the risk of mold or mildew in areas that should remain dry.
To align the spray pattern, start by identifying the boundaries of the area you want to water. Then, adjust the direction and arc of the sprinkler head so that the outer edge of the spray just reaches the farthest point of the target area. If your lawn has an irregular shape, you may need to use multiple sprinkler heads with overlapping spray patterns to ensure complete coverage. Take your time with this step, as proper alignment is key to a successful sprinkler system.
Adjusting Water Flow and Pressure
Water flow and pressure are closely related to the performance of your Orbit sprinkler, and adjusting these parameters can significantly impact the effectiveness of your irrigation system. If the pressure is too high, the water may spray too far or create misting, which wastes water and can lead to uneven coverage. If the pressure is too low, the sprinkler may not activate properly or may not reach the intended distance.
To check the water pressure, install a pressure gauge on a hose bib or use a pressure testing kit on the sprinkler line. The ideal operating pressure for most Orbit sprinklers is between 30 and 50 pounds per square inch (PSI). If the pressure is too high, install a pressure regulator to reduce it. If the pressure is too low, check for clogs in the nozzle or pipes, and consider upgrading to a higher-flow nozzle if necessary.
Timing and Scheduling Your Sprinkler System
In addition to adjusting the physical settings of your sprinkler heads, it is also important to optimize the timing and scheduling of your irrigation system. Watering at the wrong time of day can lead to evaporation losses, while watering too frequently can cause runoff and promote disease. The ideal watering schedule depends on your climate, soil type, and the specific needs of your plants.
As a general rule, it is best to water your lawn early in the morning, between 4 and 8 a.m., when temperatures are cooler and wind speeds are lower. This allows the water to soak into the soil before the heat of the day causes it to evaporate. Most lawns need about 1 inch of water per week, which can be delivered in one or two deep watering sessions. Use a rain gauge or a small container to measure the amount of water your system delivers during each cycle, and adjust the run time accordingly.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Even after carefully adjusting your Orbit sprinkler, you may encounter a few common issues that can affect performance. One of the most frequent problems is uneven coverage, which can be caused by misaligned heads, clogged nozzles, or low water pressure. To fix uneven coverage, check that all heads are properly aligned and that nozzles are clean and unobstructed. If the problem persists, consider installing additional heads or upgrading to a higher-pressure system.
Another common issue is sprinkler heads that fail to pop up or retract properly. This can be caused by debris in the valve or a worn-out spring mechanism. To address this, turn off the water supply, remove the head, and clean out any debris. If the spring is damaged, replace the head or the internal components as needed. Regular maintenance and cleaning can help prevent most of these issues from occurring in the first place.
Maintenance Best Practices
Maintaining your Orbit sprinkler system is just as important as adjusting it properly. Regular maintenance ensures that your system continues to operate efficiently and that you get the most value from your investment. One of the most important maintenance tasks is cleaning the sprinkler heads on a monthly basis during the growing season. Over time, dirt, grass clippings, and other debris can accumulate in the nozzle and interfere with the spray pattern.
In addition to cleaning the heads, it is important to inspect the system for leaks, clogs, and wear on a regular basis. Check the pipes, valves, and fittings for signs of deterioration, and replace any components that are damaged or outdated. During the winter months, it is recommended to winterize your system by draining the lines and storing any removable components indoors. This will help prevent freeze damage and extend the life of your sprinkler system. (See Also:How To Set A Water Sprinkler)

Common Mistakes to Avoid
When learning how to adjust an Orbit sprinkler, it is easy to make a few common mistakes that can reduce the effectiveness of your system and waste water. One of the most frequent errors is over-tightening the adjustment screws, which can strip the threads or damage the internal components of the sprinkler head. Always turn the screws gently and make small adjustments, testing the spray pattern after each change.
Another common mistake is failing to account for the slope of your lawn. On sloped terrain, water tends to run off before it has a chance to soak into the soil, leading to erosion and inefficient watering. To address this, use low-angle nozzles or adjust the spray pattern to deliver water at a slower rate, allowing more time for absorption. Additionally, avoid watering during windy conditions, as this can cause the spray to drift and miss the intended target area.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my Orbit sprinkler needs adjustment?
If you notice dry patches in your lawn, water pooling in certain areas, or spray that is hitting hard surfaces like driveways or sidewalks, your sprinkler likely needs adjustment. A visual inspection of the spray pattern while the system is running will quickly reveal whether the coverage is even and appropriate for your landscape.
Can I adjust an Orbit sprinkler while it is running?
It is not recommended to adjust a sprinkler while water is flowing, as this can make it difficult to see the spray pattern clearly and may cause water to spray in unintended directions. Turn off the system, make your adjustments, and then turn it back on to test the results.
How often should I check and adjust my sprinkler heads?
It is a good idea to inspect and adjust your sprinkler heads at least twice a year: once in the spring when you first start using the system and once in the fall before winterizing. Regular monthly checks during the growing season can also help catch issues early and maintain optimal performance.
What should I do if my sprinkler head will not pop up?
If a sprinkler head will not pop up, first check for debris or clogs in the nozzle. If the head is clean, the issue may be low water pressure or a damaged internal mechanism. In some cases, the head may need to be replaced, especially if it is old or has been damaged by lawn equipment. (See Also:How To Troubleshoot A Sprinkler Valve)
Can I adjust the spray pattern without turning off the water?
While it is technically possible to make minor adjustments while the system is running, it is much more effective to turn off the water first. This allows you to see the full spray pattern and make precise adjustments without the interference of flowing water.
How do I prevent my sprinkler from spraying onto the street?
To prevent spray from reaching the street, adjust the arc and direction of the sprinkler head so that the outermost edge of the spray stops just before the curb or sidewalk. You can also reduce the spray distance by turning the radius adjustment screw or installing a nozzle with a shorter throw.
Is it necessary to adjust each sprinkler head individually?
Yes, each sprinkler head should be adjusted individually to ensure that it is covering the correct area and not overlapping with adjacent heads. Even small differences in terrain or head positioning can affect the spray pattern, so individual adjustment is key to achieving uniform coverage.
What is the ideal spray distance for a residential lawn?
The ideal spray distance depends on the spacing between your sprinkler heads and the size of your lawn. As a general rule, the spray distance should be about 75 to 80 percent of the distance to the nearest head, ensuring that the areas between heads receive adequate coverage without excessive overspray.
