Understanding Weed Eater String Basics
Trimmer line, often called string, is the consumable cutting element on a string trimmer. It spins at high speed and slices through grass, weeds, and light brush by virtue of its tensile strength and flexibility. The line is fed from a spool housed inside the cutting head; as the line wears, a bump feed or automatic feed releases more material. Two primary specifications define a line: diameter (thickness) and cross‑sectional shape (round, square, star, twisted). Diameter is measured in inches or millimeters and typically ranges from .065 in (1.65 mm) for light‑duty electric trimmers up to .155 in (3.9 mm) for heavy‑duty gas models. Shape influences cutting aggression and line durability. Round line is the most common and offers a balance of wear resistance and cutting ability. Square and star shapes present sharper edges that cut thicker stems more cleanly but wear faster. Twisted line reduces drag and noise, making it popular for residential use. Understanding these basics lets you narrow the field before you even look at a package.
Why String Diameter Matters
The diameter of the line directly determines how much centrifugal force the head can generate and how much resistance the line can withstand before breaking. A line that is too thin for a powerful gas trimmer will snap constantly, causing frequent re‑feeds and wasted time. Conversely, a line that is too thick for a low‑torque electric trimmer will stall the motor, overheat the head, and may even damage the drive shaft. Manufacturers specify a recommended diameter range in the owner’s manual; staying within that range ensures the motor operates at its designed load. Diameter also affects the cutting swath: thicker line creates a wider kerf, which can be advantageous for large open areas but may be overkill for precise edging. Finally, line diameter influences line life—thicker line generally lasts longer because there is more material to abrade, but only if the trimmer can spin it at the proper RPM. Matching diameter to the trimmer’s power class is the single most important factor in achieving clean cuts and long line life.
Common String Sizes and Their Applications
Below is a quick reference table that matches typical line diameters to the trimmer class and the type of work they handle best. Use it as a starting point; always verify the exact range in your manual.
| Diameter (in) | Diameter (mm) | Trimmer Class | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| .065 | 1.65 | Light‑duty electric / battery | Grass trimming, light edging |
| .080 | 2.03 | Mid‑range electric / battery | Medium grass, light weeds |
| .095 | 2.41 | Heavy‑duty electric / entry gas | Thick grass, moderate weeds |
| .105 | 2.67 | Mid‑range gas | Heavy weeds, light brush |
| .130 | 3.30 | Professional gas | Thick brush, small saplings |
| .155 | 3.94 | Commercial gas | Heavy brush, clearing |
Notice the overlap: many mid‑range gas trimmers accept both .095 and .105 line. In those cases the thinner line gives a finer cut and longer run time, while the thicker line tackles tougher stems more aggressively. Choose based on the dominant vegetation you face.
Can You Use Any Size Weed Eater String?
The short answer remains no. While some heads are marketed as “universal” and accept a range of diameters, each trimmer model has a maximum and minimum line size engineered into the head geometry, motor torque, and feed mechanism. Using a line outside the specified range can cause several problems. If the line is too large, the feed ports may jam, the spool may not rotate freely, and the motor can overheat from excessive load. If the line is too small, the centrifugal force may be insufficient to keep the line extended, resulting in a “floppy” line that folds back into the head and cuts poorly. Additionally, warranty coverage often requires using line within the manufacturer’s recommended specifications. Always consult the owner’s manual or the label on the cutting head before purchasing a spool.
How to Determine the Correct String Size for Your Trimmer
Follow these steps to identify the exact line diameter your trimmer needs.
- Locate the model number. It is usually printed on a sticker near the motor housing or on the cutting head.
- Check the owner’s manual. The manual lists the recommended line diameter range (e.g., .080–.095 in). If you lost the manual, search the model number on the manufacturer’s website.
- Inspect the cutting head. Many heads have the acceptable diameter molded into the plastic or stamped on a metal plate.
- Measure existing line. If you have a piece of the original line, use a caliper or a ruler with millimeter markings to confirm its thickness.
- Consider your typical workload. If you mostly trim lawn edges, the lower end of the range is fine. For heavy weed clearing, move toward the upper end.
- Purchase a spool that matches. Buy a reputable brand that clearly states the diameter on the packaging.
Taking a few minutes to verify the correct size prevents wasted money and frustrating downtime. (See Also:Who Sells Echo Weed Eater Parts)
Installing New Trimmer Line: Step-by-Step Guide
Replacing line is straightforward once you know the procedure for your specific head type (bump feed, fixed‑line, or auto‑feed). The steps below cover the most common bump‑feed head.
- Power off and disconnect. Remove the battery or unplug the unit; for gas models, disconnect the spark plug wire.
- Remove the spool. Press the release tabs or unscrew the retaining knob, then pull the spool out of the head housing.
- Clean the head. Brush out grass clippings and debris; a clean head feeds line more reliably.
- Cut the new line. Measure two equal lengths (typically 10–12 ft each) from the spool. Cut cleanly with scissors or a utility knife.
- Insert the line. Find the anchor holes or notches on the spool. Insert one end of each length into the designated holes, following the directional arrows printed on the spool.
- Wind evenly. Turn the spool in the direction indicated (usually clockwise) while keeping tension on both strands. Keep the wraps tight and side‑by‑side to prevent crossing.
- Leave the tails. Stop winding when about 6 in of each tail remain. Snap the tails into the retaining slots on the spool flange.
- Reinstall the spool. Place the spool back into the head, align the notches, and secure the retaining knob or tabs.
- Test the feed. Reconnect power, start the trimmer, and tap the head on the ground to verify smooth line advance.
If your trimmer uses a fixed‑line head, you simply thread pre‑cut lengths through the eyelets and tighten the set screws. Auto‑feed heads often require a specific cartridge; follow the cartridge instructions exactly.
Types of Trimmer Line Materials
Most consumer line is made from nylon (polyamide) because it balances flexibility, abrasion resistance, and cost. Within nylon there are variations: co‑polymer blends add impact resistance, while “premium” lines may incorporate a small percentage of polyester for extra stiffness. Some professional lines use a nylon‑core with a harder outer sheath, reducing wear on abrasive surfaces like concrete. Biodegradable lines made from plant‑based polymers are emerging but currently have shorter life and higher cost. For the vast majority of users, a high‑quality co‑polymer nylon line in the correct diameter delivers the best price‑to‑performance ratio.
Matching Line Shape to Cutting Tasks
Line shape changes how the line interacts with vegetation. Round line slides through grass with minimal resistance, making it ideal for general lawn maintenance. Square line presents four sharp edges that slice through thicker stems and woody weeds more cleanly, but the edges dull faster. Star‑shaped (five‑point) line adds more cutting edges for aggressive brush clearing, yet it wears the quickest. Twisted line reduces aerodynamic drag, lowering noise and vibration, which is pleasant for residential neighborhoods. Choose shape based on the toughest material you regularly encounter; you can always keep a spare spool of a different shape for occasional heavy jobs.
Common Mistakes When Choosing String Size
- Buying the thickest line available. Thicker is not better if your trimmer cannot spin it; you will stall the motor and overheat the head.
- Ignoring the manual’s range. Even a .005 in difference can change feed reliability.
- Mixing diameters on a dual‑line head. Uneven line lengths cause vibration and uneven wear.
- Using old, brittle line. Nylon degrades with UV exposure; line older than two seasons may snap prematurely.
- Over‑winding the spool. Too much line prevents the bump feed from releasing new line, leading to constant manual feeding.
Avoiding these pitfalls saves time, money, and frustration.
Tips and Best Practices for Longer Line Life
- Store spools in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent UV degradation.
- Trim at the recommended RPM; running the engine at full throttle unnecessarily accelerates wear.
- Use the “tap‑and‑go” technique gently; slamming the head into the ground can bend the feed mechanism.
- Keep the cutting head clean; grass buildup creates friction that shortens line life.
- Match line shape to the job—use round line for everyday trimming and switch to square only when tackling heavy weeds.
- Inspect the line before each session; replace any frayed or kinked sections immediately.
Following these habits extends the interval between spool changes and keeps cuts clean.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use .095 line on a trimmer rated for .080–.095?
Yes, .095 in is at the upper end of that range and will work, but expect slightly higher load on the motor and shorter run time per charge on battery models. (See Also:How To Run A Stihl Weed Eater)
What happens if I put .130 line on a .095‑max trimmer?
The head will likely jam, the motor may overheat, and the feed mechanism can break. It also voids most warranties.
Is square line always better than round line?
Not necessarily. Square line cuts thicker stems faster but wears out quicker on abrasive surfaces. Round line lasts longer for general grass trimming.
How often should I replace the trimmer line?
Replace when the line becomes frayed, brittle, or when you notice a drop in cutting performance. For typical residential use, a spool lasts one to two seasons.
Can I sharpen trimmer line?
No. Trimmer line is a consumable; sharpening is impractical and unsafe. Replace worn line instead. (See Also:Are Weed Eater Attachments Universal)
Does line color indicate anything?
Color is mostly branding. Some manufacturers use color to denote diameter or material, but there is no universal standard.
