Tools You’ll Need for Disassembly

Having the right tools on hand before you start working on your Craftsman weed eater will save you time, prevent damage to parts, and make the disassembly process far smoother. Most tools required are common household items, with a few optional specialized tools that make the job easier for gas-powered models.

Basic Hand Tools

You will need the following basic tools for nearly all Craftsman weed eater disassembly jobs:

• Phillips and flathead screwdrivers: Multiple sizes to fit different screw heads on the handle, engine housing, and cutting head assembly.
• Adjustable wrench or socket set: For loosening nuts and bolts that secure the cutting head, engine, and handle components. A 10mm and 13mm socket will cover most Craftsman models.
• Needle-nose pliers and standard slip-joint pliers: For gripping small parts, removing clips, and pulling apart connected components.
• Small parts tray or magnetic mat: To keep screws, bolts, and small clips organized during disassembly, so you don’t lose them or mix up sizes.
• Shop rags: For wiping away grease, dirt, and spilled fuel (for gas models).
• Penetrating oil (e.g., WD-40): To loosen stuck bolts, nuts, and clips that have been tightened over time.

Specialized Tools (Optional but Helpful)

While not required for basic disassembly, these tools will make the job easier, especially for gas-powered Craftsman weed eaters:

• Spark plug socket: A 5/8-inch or 13/16-inch socket designed to fit spark plugs without damaging the ceramic insulator.
• Carburetor screwdriver: A small, flathead screwdriver with a thin tip for adjusting or removing carburetor jets.
• Fuel line clamp pliers: To pinch fuel lines closed while disconnecting them, preventing fuel spills.
• Torque wrench: For tightening bolts to the manufacturer’s specified torque during reassembly, avoiding over-tightening that can crack plastic or metal parts.

Safety Precautions to Take Before Starting

Disassembling a power tool like a Craftsman weed eater carries inherent risks, especially with gas-powered models that have fuel and ignition components. Following these safety steps will prevent injury and damage to your tool:

1. Fully disconnect the power source first: For electric models, unplug the tool from the outlet or remove the battery pack for cordless units. For gas models, remove the spark plug wire from the spark plug and secure it away from the plug to prevent accidental starting. Never skip this step, as even a seemingly off tool can start unexpectedly if the ignition is engaged.
2. Wear personal protective equipment (PPE): Use work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal edges and grease, and safety glasses to shield your eyes from debris, especially when removing the cutting head.
3. Work in a well-ventilated area: Gas-powered models emit fumes, so always work outdoors or in a space with open windows and doors. Avoid working in enclosed garages or sheds without ventilation.
4. Clear your work area: Remove grass, leaves, and other debris from the space where you’re working to avoid losing small parts, and keep a fire extinguisher nearby when working with gas models to address any fuel spills.
5. Let the engine cool completely: If you recently used the weed eater, wait at least 30 minutes for the engine and exhaust to cool before touching any metal parts to avoid burns.

Identifying Your Craftsman Weed Eater Model

Craftsman produces a wide range of weed eaters, including curved-shaft and straight-shaft gas models, 2-cycle and 4-cycle engines, and corded and cordless electric models. Disassembly steps can vary slightly between models, so identifying your specific unit first will ensure you follow the correct process and avoid damaging parts.

Where to Find Your Model Number

Your Craftsman weed eater’s model number is printed on a label in one of three common locations:

• On the back of the engine housing, near the air filter or recoil starter.
• On the lower shaft, just above the cutting head gearbox.
• On the original product packaging or in the owner’s manual (if you still have it).

The model number is usually a combination of letters and numbers, such as “Craftsman 316.791520” or “Craftsman 20V MAX Cordless Weed Wacker.”

Why Your Model Number Matters for Disassembly

Checking your model number against the owner’s manual will confirm the exact location of fasteners, the type of fuel system (for gas models), and any model-specific disassembly warnings. For example, 4-cycle gas Craftsman weed eaters have an oil drain plug that 2-cycle models do not, and cordless models have a battery mounting bracket that must be removed before accessing the motor. If you don’t have a physical manual, you can find a free digital copy of your Craftsman weed eater manual on the official Craftsman website by entering your model number.

Step-by-Step Disassembly Guide for Craftsman Weed Eaters

This guide covers the standard disassembly process for most Craftsman weed eaters, with notes for gas and electric model variations. If you have a specific model, cross-reference these steps with your owner’s manual for any unique requirements.

Step 1: Disconnect the Power Source

As emphasized in the safety section, this is the most critical first step. For electric corded models, unplug the power cord from the outlet and wrap it loosely to avoid damaging the wires. For cordless electric models, press the release button on the battery pack and slide it off the tool’s mounting bracket. For gas-powered models, pull the spark plug wire straight off the spark plug terminal, then tuck it away from the plug to prevent it from snapping back into place accidentally.

Step 2: Remove the Cutting Head and Guard

The cutting head and debris guard are the outermost components, so they are the easiest to remove first. Start by removing the debris shield (the metal or plastic guard that covers the blade) by loosening the mounting screws or bolts that attach it to the gearbox housing. Next, hold the cutting blade steady with a block of wood to prevent it from spinning, then use an adjustable wrench or socket to loosen the central nut or bolt that secures the cutting head to the gearbox. For models with a quick-release cutting head, simply press the release lever and pull the head straight off the gearbox. Once the nut is loose, remove it, along with any washers or spacers, then pull the cutting head off the gearbox shaft. Set all parts aside in your parts tray.

Step 3: Detach the Fuel System (Gas Models Only)

If you have a gas-powered Craftsman weed eater, detach the fuel system to access the carburetor and engine. First, use fuel line clamp pliers to pinch the rubber fuel line running from the tank to the carburetor to prevent fuel spills. Place a shop rag under the connection, pull the line off the carburetor fitting, and drain any remaining fuel into an approved container. Next, remove the bolts securing the fuel tank to the engine housing, then lift the tank off and set it aside.

Step 4: Remove the Air Filter and Carburetor

The air filter is located on the side of the engine housing, covered by a plastic air filter cover. Remove the screws holding the cover in place, then lift the cover off to access the air filter. Pull the air filter out and set it aside—you can clean it with soap and water if it is reusable, or replace it if it is dirty or damaged. Next, locate the carburetor, which is attached to the side of the engine with 2–3 mounting bolts. Before removing the bolts, take a clear photo of the throttle and choke linkage connections to the carburetor, so you can reconnect them correctly during reassembly. Disconnect the linkage clips, then remove the mounting bolts and lift the carburetor off the engine.

Step 5: Disconnect the Ignition System

For gas-powered models, use a spark plug socket to loosen and remove the spark plug from the cylinder head, then set it aside. Next, locate the ignition coil wires running from the coil to the engine’s wiring harness, and disconnect them, labeling each wire with a piece of tape if needed to avoid mixing them up later. For electric models, locate the wiring harness that runs from the motor to the handle controls, then disconnect the harness connectors, again labeling wires if necessary to ensure correct reassembly.

Step 6: Separate the Engine from the Shaft

This step is only required if you need to access internal engine components, the shaft gears, or the gearbox. For straight-shaft Craftsman weed eaters, locate the coupling bolts that secure the engine to the drive shaft, and loosen them. Some models also have a setscrew that holds the shaft in place, which you will need to loosen with an Allen wrench before you can pull the engine off the shaft. For curved-shaft models, the engine is integrated with the shaft, so you will need to remove the gearbox housing bolts to access the internal gears and drive shaft.

Step 7: Remove the Handle and Control Components

The final step in full disassembly is removing the handle and control components. Start by removing the bolts that secure the handle to the shaft, then slide the handle off. Next, disconnect the throttle cable from the carburetor linkage (for gas models) or the trigger switch wiring (for electric models). If your model has a shoulder strap, remove the mounting bolts that secure the strap to the engine housing and shaft. Label all control cables and wires as you remove them to ensure you can route them correctly during reassembly.

Reassembly Quick Tips

Reassembling your Craftsman weed eater is straightforward if you stay organized and follow these best practices:

• Take photos during disassembly: Snap pictures of each step as you remove parts, so you have a visual reference for how components fit together and where wires and cables are routed.
• Replace worn seals and gaskets: If you removed any rubber gaskets, O-rings, or seals during disassembly, replace them with new OEM parts to prevent fuel or air leaks after reassembly.
• Tighten fasteners to spec: Use a torque wrench to tighten bolts to the manufacturer’s recommended torque, which you can find in your owner’s manual. Over-tightening can crack plastic housing or strip threads, while under-tightening can cause parts to come loose during use.
• Test before full reassembly: Once you have reconnected the engine, fuel system, and ignition, test the weed eater to make sure it starts and runs before reattaching the handle and cutting head. This will save you from having to disassemble it again if there is an issue.
• Lubricate moving parts: Apply a small amount of lightweight oil to the throttle cable, gearbox gears, and cutting head shaft to ensure smooth operation after reassembly.

Common Disassembly Mistakes to Avoid

Even experienced DIYers make mistakes when disassembling power tools. Avoid these common errors to prevent damage to your Craftsman weed eater and ensure smooth reassembly:

• Forcing stuck parts: If a bolt or nut is stuck, apply penetrating oil and let it sit for 10–15 minutes before trying to loosen it again. Forcing it can break the bolt or crack the surrounding plastic or metal.
• Skipping power disconnection: Failing to fully disconnect the power source is the leading cause of injury during weed eater maintenance. Even if the tool is turned off, the ignition can engage if the spark plug wire is connected, causing the blade to spin unexpectedly.
• Not labeling wires and cables: Electric models and gas models with electric starters have multiple wires that can look identical. Label each wire with tape as you remove it to avoid mixing them up during reassembly, which can cause electrical issues or prevent the tool from starting.
• Using incorrect replacement parts: When replacing screws, bolts, or gaskets, always use parts that match the original size and thread type. Using parts that are too long or too short can damage internal components or cause parts to come loose during use.
• Spilling fuel without containment: When disassembling a gas-powered model, always have a shop rag and approved fuel container ready to catch spills. Fuel spills are a major fire hazard, so never leave spilled fuel sitting on the tool or work surface.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I disassemble my Craftsman weed eater for maintenance?

For most homeowners, a full or partial disassembly for maintenance every 6–12 months is sufficient, based on usage. If you use the weed eater weekly during the growing season, disassemble it every 6 months to clean the air filter, inspect the carburetor, and check the spark plug. For occasional use (once a month or less), annual disassembly is enough. Disassemble immediately if you notice reduced power, difficulty starting, or uneven cutting, as these signal that internal parts need cleaning or replacement.

Can I take apart an electric Craftsman weed eater the same way as a gas model?

Core steps for removing external components like the cutting head, guard, and handle are similar for both gas and electric models, but key differences exist for electric units. You will not need to remove a fuel system or ignition components for electric models, but you must disconnect the electrical wiring harness and handle controls carefully to avoid damaging fragile wires. Cordless models also require removing the battery mounting bracket before accessing the motor, so always refer to your specific model’s manual for exact steps to avoid damaging electrical components.

What should I do if I lose small screws during disassembly?

First, thoroughly check your work area, as small screws often fall into grass or debris. If you cannot find the original, replace it with a matching screw from a hardware store, ensuring the thread size, length, and head type match. Avoid screws that are too long, as they can damage internal components when tightened. For critical screws securing the engine, gearbox, or handle, order an OEM replacement from Craftsman using your model number for a perfect fit and safety.

How do I know if my weed eater needs a new carburetor after disassembly?

After removing the carburetor, inspect it for irreparable damage: cracked or warped gaskets, clogged jets that will not clear with cleaning, or heavy corrosion. If your weed eater had persistent starting issues, rough idling, or stalling before disassembly, and cleaning does not resolve the problem, replace it with an OEM Craftsman carburetor for your model to ensure compatibility and proper fuel flow.

Is it safe to store a disassembled weed eater long-term?

Yes, with proper preparation. For gas models, drain all fuel from the tank and carburetor to prevent gum buildup, remove the spark plug, and add a small amount of engine oil to the cylinder to prevent rust. For electric models, remove the battery (if cordless) and store it in a cool, dry place, and coil the power cord loosely to avoid damaging wires. Store all parts in a sealed labeled bag or parts tray to avoid losing them, and keep the assembly in a dry, temperature-controlled area to prevent rust and corrosion.
