Understanding Your Troy Bilt Weed Eater

Troy Bilt offers a range of string trimmers, from lightweight electric models to robust gas‑powered units. Each model uses a specific head design that determines how the line is fed and replaced. Before you begin, locate the model number on the motor housing or the head itself; this information helps you purchase the correct replacement spool and line diameter. Most residential Troy Bilt trimmers accept .080‑inch or .095‑inch round line, while professional‑grade units may require .105‑inch or even .130‑inch line for heavy brush.

Understanding the head type is crucial. A bump‑feed head releases line when you tap the head on the ground, a fixed‑line head holds a pre‑cut length that you replace manually, and an auto‑feed head advances line automatically as it wears. Knowing which system you have prevents buying the wrong spool and ensures a smooth restringing process.

Types of Trimmer Line Compatible with Troy Bilt

Trimmer line comes in several shapes and materials, each suited to different cutting conditions. Round line is the most common and works well for general grass and light weeds. Twisted or serrated line adds cutting edges for thicker vegetation, while square or star‑shaped line provides aggressive slicing for heavy brush. Co‑polymer lines resist welding and last longer than standard nylon, making them a smart choice for frequent users.

When selecting line, match the diameter to your trimmer’s specifications. Using line that is too thick can stall the motor, while line that is too thin may break prematurely. Always check the owner’s manual or the spool label for the recommended size. Purchasing a spool that matches the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) part number guarantees compatibility and optimal performance.

Tools and Safety Gear Needed

Restringing a weed eater requires only a few basic tools, but safety should never be overlooked. Gather the following items before you start:

• Replacement trimmer line (correct diameter and length)
• Gloves to protect your hands from sharp line ends
• Safety glasses or goggles to shield eyes from debris
• Flat‑head screwdriver or the proprietary tool supplied with the trimmer
• Clean cloth for wiping the head and spool
• Workbench or stable surface to hold the trimmer securely

Disconnect the spark plug wire on gas models or unplug the battery on electric units to prevent accidental starts. Ensure the trimmer head has cooled completely if you have been running the machine recently. (See Also:How To Clean Dried Grass From Weed Eater)

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Replace Weed Eater Line Troy Bilt?

The following universal steps apply to most Troy Bilt heads. Specific variations for bump‑feed and fixed‑line heads are covered in the next two sections.

1. Power off the trimmer and disconnect the spark plug or battery.
2. Remove the trimmer head by unscrewing the retaining knob or pressing the release tabs, depending on the model.
3. Take out the empty spool and discard any remaining line fragments.
4. Clean the head housing and spool cavity with a dry cloth to remove grass buildup.
5. Cut a length of new line according to the manufacturer’s recommendation (typically 10–15 feet for bump‑feed, 8–10 feet for fixed‑line).
6. Insert one end of the line into the anchor hole on the spool and wind the line evenly in the direction indicated by the arrow on the spool.
7. Leave a short tail (about 6 inches) protruding from the exit eyelet.
8. Reinstall the spool into the head, ensuring the line feeds through the eyelets correctly.
9. Reattach the head to the trimmer shaft and secure the retaining knob or tabs.
10. Reconnect the spark plug or battery, start the trimmer, and test the line feed by tapping the head (bump‑feed) or pulling the line (fixed‑line).

Detailed Steps for Bump Feed Head

Bump‑feed heads are the most common on Troy Bilt residential trimmers. They rely on centrifugal force to release line when the head is tapped against the ground.

1. After removing the head, locate the spool release button on the side of the head housing. Press it and lift the spool out.
2. Inspect the spool for wear; replace the entire spool if the plastic is cracked or the spring is weak.
3. Cut a single piece of line to the length specified in the manual (usually 12–15 feet).
4. Thread one end through the anchor hole, then wind the line tightly and evenly in the direction of the arrow. Keep the line flat to prevent overlapping.
5. When the spool is nearly full, leave a 6‑inch tail and snap the tail into the notch on the spool flange.
6. Place the spool back into the head, aligning the tail with the exit eyelet. Press until you hear a click.
7. Reattach the head to the shaft, tighten the retaining knob, and reconnect power.
8. Start the engine, let it reach operating speed, then gently tap the head on grass to advance line. Verify that line feeds smoothly and cuts cleanly.

Detailed Steps for Fixed Line Head

Fixed‑line heads hold a pre‑measured length of line that you replace manually. They are simple but require precise cutting.

1. Remove the head by unscrewing the central knob or releasing the side latches.
2. Pull the old line out of the eyelets and discard it.
3. Measure and cut two equal lengths of new line (typically 8–10 feet each) using a sharp utility knife.
4. Insert one end of each piece into the opposing anchor holes on the spool.
5. Wind both lines simultaneously, keeping them side by side and following the directional arrow.
6. Stop winding when the spool is full, leaving about 4 inches of each line protruding.
7. Thread the protruding ends through the exit eyelets on the head housing.
8. Reinstall the spool, secure the head to the shaft, and reconnect power.
9. Start the trimmer and pull the lines manually to ensure they are seated correctly. The head should now cut without needing a bump action.

Tips for Longer Line Life

• Use the correct diameter; oversized line stresses the motor and wears faster.
• Store spare line in a cool, dry place to prevent moisture absorption, which makes line brittle.
• Avoid cutting hard objects like rocks, metal edging, or thick roots; they cause immediate line breakage.
• Keep the trimmer head clean; grass buildup creates friction that accelerates wear.
• Wind line evenly and tightly on the spool to prevent overlapping, which leads to jams and uneven feeding.
• Replace the spool spring annually on bump‑feed heads to maintain consistent line release.

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

• Wrong line diameter: Always verify the spec in the manual; using .105‑inch line on a .080‑inch head will stall the engine.
• Over‑filling the spool: Excess line causes binding and prevents proper feed. Leave the recommended tail length.
• Winding in the wrong direction: Follow the arrow on the spool; reverse winding leads to line jamming.
• Neglecting safety gear: Flying debris can cause eye injuries; always wear glasses and gloves.
• Forgetting to disconnect power: Accidental starts during restringing can cause serious injury.
• Using damaged spools: Cracked spools or worn springs produce inconsistent feed; replace the entire spool assembly when damaged.

Maintenance After Restringing

After you have successfully restrung the trimmer, a few quick checks keep the machine running smoothly. Run the trimmer at low speed for a minute to let the line settle into the head. Inspect the line feed by tapping (bump‑feed) or pulling (fixed‑line) to confirm smooth operation. Wipe down the head and shaft to remove any grass clippings that could cause corrosion. Lubricate the head’s pivot points with a light machine oil if the manufacturer recommends it. Finally, store the trimmer in a dry location and keep the spark plug wire disconnected during long‑term storage.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I replace the trimmer line?

Line replacement frequency depends on usage and vegetation type. For typical residential lawn care, expect to reload the spool every 2–4 hours of cutting time. Heavy brush or frequent edging may require more frequent changes. (See Also:How Do I Restring My Echo Weed Eater)

Can I use any brand of trimmer line with my Troy Bilt?

Yes, as long as the line diameter and shape match the specifications in your owner’s manual. OEM line is guaranteed to fit, but reputable aftermarket brands work equally well when sized correctly.

Why does my line keep breaking near the eyelet?

Breakage at the eyelet usually indicates a sharp edge on the eyelet, misaligned winding, or line that is too thin for the head. Inspect the eyelet for burrs, rewind the line evenly, and verify you are using the recommended diameter.

Do I need to replace the entire spool or just the line?

If the spool body is intact and the spring functions, you only need to replace the line. Replace the whole spool if the plastic is cracked, the spring is weak, or the anchor holes are worn.

How do I know which head type I have?

Check the head for a bump knob (bump‑feed), a fixed line exit with no moving parts (fixed‑line), or a cartridge that slides out without a bump knob (auto‑feed). The model number on the head housing also identifies the type in the parts diagram. (See Also:Why Won T My Echo Weed Eater Start)
