Understanding Your Ryobi Weed Eater
Types of Ryobi Trimmers
Ryobi offers several trimmer families, including the 18V ONE+ cordless line, the 40V brushless series, and a few gas‑powered models. Most modern cordless units use a bump‑feed head that accepts a pre‑wound spool or the newer Reel Easy Reload cartridge. Gas models typically use a fixed‑head spool that you wind manually. Knowing which head your machine uses determines the line diameter (usually .080 in. or .095 in.) and the loading method.
Why Relining Matters
A worn or broken line reduces cutting efficiency, forces the motor to work harder, and can cause premature wear on the drive shaft. Regular relining also prevents the line from snapping mid‑job, which can be a safety hazard. By keeping the spool fresh, you maintain optimal RPM, extend battery life on cordless models, and achieve a cleaner cut with less effort.
Tools and Materials Needed
Before you start, gather the following items:
- Replacement trimmer line (match the diameter specified in your owner’s manual)
- Reel Easy Reload cartridge (if your model uses the quick‑load system)
- Gloves to protect your hands from sharp line ends
- Safety glasses or goggles
- Small flat‑head screwdriver (only needed for older fixed‑head models)
- Clean rag or brush for debris removal
Having everything within reach eliminates interruptions and lets you focus on the procedure.
Safety Precautions
Always treat a string trimmer as a power tool. Follow these safety steps before any maintenance:
- Disconnect the battery or unplug the unit. For gas models, remove the spark plug wire.
- Wear eye protection; line fragments can fly at high speed.
- Work on a stable surface, preferably a workbench or a clean patch of grass.
- Keep children and pets away from the work area.
- Never attempt to reline while the motor is running or the battery is attached.
These precautions protect you and prevent accidental damage to the trimmer.
Step‑by‑Step Guide: How to Reline a Ryobi Weed Eater
The following ordered list covers the most common bump‑feed head. If your trimmer uses the Reel Easy Reload cartridge, skip to the dedicated section below.
- Remove the spool. Press the release tabs on the sides of the head and pull the spool straight out. On some models you may need to turn the spool counter‑clockwise a quarter turn before it releases.
- Clean the spool housing. Use a brush or rag to clear grass clippings, dirt, and old line fragments. A clean housing ensures the new line feeds smoothly.
- Prepare the new line. Cut a length of line about 10‑12 feet (check the manual for exact length). Fold the line in half to find the midpoint; this will be the anchor point.
- Load the line onto the spool. Insert the midpoint into the anchor hole or notch on the spool. Wind the line evenly in the direction indicated by the arrow on the spool (usually clockwise). Keep tension consistent to avoid overlaps or gaps.
- Secure the line ends. When you reach the end of the line, tuck the loose ends into the retaining slots or notches on the spool. This prevents the line from unspooling during operation.
- Reinstall the spool. Align the spool with the head, press it in until the tabs click, and give it a gentle tug to confirm it’s seated.
- Test the trimmer. Reattach the battery or spark plug wire, start the motor, and bump the head on the ground a few times. The line should extend evenly. If it feeds unevenly, repeat the loading steps.
Following these steps ensures a reliable feed and a clean cut every time.
Ryobi Reel Easy Reload System Explained
How the Easy Reload Works
The Reel Easy Reload system replaces the traditional spool with a pre‑wound cartridge that snaps into the trimmer head. Inside the cartridge, the line is already tensioned and wound to the correct length. When the line wears down, you simply eject the empty cartridge and insert a new one—no manual winding required.
Advantages Over Traditional Spools
- Speed: Cartridge swap takes under 30 seconds.
- Consistency: Factory‑wound line eliminates uneven winding that can cause feed problems.
- Less mess: No loose line to handle or cut.
- Reduced waste: Cartridges are recyclable in many municipalities.
If your model supports Reel Easy Reload, it’s the fastest way to keep cutting without interruption.
Comparison Table: Traditional Spool vs. Reel Easy Reload
| Feature | Traditional Spool | Reel Easy Reload Cartridge |
|---|---|---|
| Loading time | 3‑5 minutes | Under 30 seconds |
| Line winding skill required | Yes | No |
| Risk of uneven feed | Higher | Lower |
| Cost per reload | Lower (bulk line) | Higher (cartridge price) |
| Environmental impact | Line waste only | Cartridge plastic (often recyclable) |
| Compatibility | All bump‑feed heads | Only Reel Easy‑compatible models |
Use this table to decide which system fits your workflow and budget.
Tips and Best Practices for Long‑Lasting Line
- Store replacement line in a cool, dry place; UV exposure makes line brittle.
- Match line diameter exactly to the specification—oversized line can jam the head.
- Wind the line with steady tension; loose winding leads to slack that snags.
- Trim the line ends at a 45° angle before loading; this helps the line seat in the anchor hole.
- Inspect the spool for cracks or warping each time you reline; a damaged spool causes uneven feed.
- After each use, tap the head lightly on grass to clear debris before storage.
These habits extend line life and reduce the frequency of reloads.
Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
- Using the wrong line diameter. Always verify the manual; a .095 in. line in a .080 in. head will not feed.
- Over‑filling the spool. Excess line creates friction and can cause the head to jam. Stop winding when the spool is about 80 % full.
- Winding in the wrong direction. Follow the arrow on the spool; reverse winding makes the line retract instead of extend.
- Forgetting to secure the line ends. Loose ends unravel during operation, leading to sudden line loss.
- Skipping the cleaning step. Debris in the housing interferes with the bump‑feed mechanism.
Addressing these points eliminates the majority of relining headaches.
Troubleshooting Common Relining Issues
Even with careful loading, you may encounter a few problems. Here’s how to resolve the most frequent ones:
- Line won’t extend. Check that the spool is seated fully and that the bump knob moves freely. Clean any grass buildup around the feed eyelets.
- Line feeds unevenly or tangles. Re‑wind the spool with consistent tension, ensuring no overlapping loops. Verify the line diameter matches the head.
- Line breaks immediately. Inspect for sharp edges on the spool or housing; file them smooth. Also confirm you’re not using old, UV‑degraded line.
- Cartridge won’t click into Reel Easy head. Ensure the cartridge orientation matches the guide ribs; some models have a keyed slot.
If problems persist after these checks, consult the service manual or contact Ryobi support.
Maintenance Schedule for Your Ryobi Trimmer
A simple schedule keeps the trimmer running smoothly all season:
| Interval | Task |
|---|---|
| Every use | Inspect line length; bump to extend as needed |
| Every 5‑10 hours | Clean spool housing, check for wear on the bump knob |
| Every 20 hours | Replace line or cartridge; lubricate the drive shaft if the manual recommends it |
| Seasonally | Inspect motor vents, tighten any loose screws, charge or replace battery as needed |
Following this routine prevents unexpected downtime and extends the life of both the tool and the line.
Frequently Asked Questions
What line diameter should I use for my Ryobi weed eater?
Most Ryobi cordless trimmers accept .080 in. line, while some heavier‑duty models use .095 in. Always check the specification label on the trimmer head or the owner’s manual to be certain.
Can I use third‑party trimmer line with the Reel Easy Reload system?
The Reel Easy Reload cartridges are proprietary; you cannot load bulk line into them. However, you can purchase compatible cartridges from other brands that meet Ryobi’s dimensions, but using genuine Ryobi cartridges guarantees proper fit and feed performance.
How often should I reline my trimmer?
Frequency depends on yard size and vegetation type. For a typical suburban lawn, expect to reload every 2‑3 hours of cutting time. Heavy brush or thick weeds will wear line faster.
Why does the line keep breaking near the head?
Common causes include using line that’s too thick, a damaged spool eyelet, or hitting hard objects like rocks or curbs. Inspect the head for sharp edges and avoid forcing the trimmer into dense, woody material.
Is the Reel Easy Reload worth the extra cost?
If you value speed and consistency—especially for frequent or professional use—the cartridge system pays for itself in saved time. For occasional homeowners, bulk line on a traditional spool remains the most economical choice.
