Understanding Your Weed Eater Head Types

String trimmers use three primary head designs, each with a distinct line‑feeding mechanism. Recognizing which style you have is the first step toward a successful refill.

Bump‑Feed (Tap‑Advance) Head

The bump‑feed head is the most common design on residential and light‑commercial trimmers. A spring‑loaded spool holds the line, and tapping the head against the ground releases a short length of fresh line. This system is simple, reliable, and allows the operator to control line length on the fly.

Fixed‑Line (Pre‑Cut) Head

Fixed‑line heads accept pre‑cut lengths of line that are inserted into slots or holes on the spool. No bumping is required; the line stays at a constant length until it wears down and must be replaced manually. These heads are often found on older models or on trimmers designed for very light duty.

Automatic‑Feed Head

Automatic‑feed heads use a centrifugal or gear‑driven mechanism that advances line as the spool spins. The operator does not need to tap the head; the system feeds new line whenever the existing length becomes too short. While convenient, these heads can be more complex to service and may require specific line diameters.

Choosing the Right Trimmer Line

Line selection directly affects cutting performance, durability, and the effort required to refill. Consider the following factors before purchasing a spool.

Diameter

Line diameter is measured in inches or millimeters. Light‑duty residential trimmers typically use 0.065‑inch (1.65 mm) line, while heavy‑duty commercial units may require 0.095‑inch (2.4 mm) or thicker. Using a line that is too thick can stall the motor; too thin a line will break prematurely.

Shape

Round line is the standard shape and works well for general grass and weed trimming. Twisted, serrated, or star‑shaped lines increase cutting surface area and can slice through thicker stems more cleanly, but they may wear faster and generate more vibration.

Material

Most lines are made from nylon copolymer, which balances flexibility and strength. Some premium lines incorporate a co‑extruded core of harder polymer for added wear resistance, while others add a thin coating of titanium or ceramic particles to reduce friction. Choose a material that matches the intensity of your typical workload.

Tools and Safety Gear

Before you begin, gather the following items to make the job smooth and safe:

• Replacement trimmer line (correct diameter and length)
• Protective gloves (cut‑resistant preferred)
• Safety glasses or goggles
• Flat‑head screwdriver or the manufacturer’s supplied tool
• Clean rag or brush for debris removal
• Workbench or stable surface

Always disconnect the spark plug wire (gas models) or remove the battery (cordless models) before servicing the head. This prevents accidental starts that could cause serious injury.

Step‑by‑Step: How to Refill Weed Eater Line

The following generic procedure applies to most bump‑feed heads. Specific variations for fixed‑line and automatic‑feed heads are covered in the next sections.

1. Power down and secure the trimmer. Remove the spark plug wire or battery, then lay the unit on a stable surface with the head facing up.
2. Remove the spool cover. Most covers unscrew by hand or with a screwdriver. Keep the screws in a small container so they do not get lost.
3. Take out the empty spool. Note the orientation of any notches or arrows that indicate winding direction.
4. Clean the head interior. Use a brush or rag to remove grass clippings, dirt, and old line fragments. A clean housing reduces friction and prevents jams.
5. Cut the new line to length. Consult the owner’s manual for the recommended length; a typical range is 10‑15 feet (3‑4.5 m) per side for a dual‑line spool.
6. Insert the line into the anchor hole. Feed one end of the line into the designated starter hole, leaving a short tail (about 1‑2 inches) to hold it in place.
7. Wind the line evenly. Turn the spool in the direction indicated by the arrow (usually clockwise). Keep tension consistent and avoid overlapping layers.
8. Leave the proper tail length. After winding, leave the same short tail on the opposite side. This tail will be trimmed later.
9. Reinstall the spool. Place the spool back into the head, aligning any notches with the housing tabs.
10. Replace the cover and secure it. Tighten the screws just enough to hold the cover firmly without stripping the threads.
11. Trim the tails. Pull the line tails through the eyelets and cut them to the manufacturer’s recommended length, usually 3‑4 inches.
12. Reconnect power and test. Reattach the spark plug wire or battery, start the trimmer, and tap the head gently on the ground to verify smooth line advance.

Refilling a Bump‑Feed Head

Bump‑feed heads are the most user‑friendly, but a few nuances can make the process even smoother.

1. Follow steps 1‑4 from the generic procedure above.
2. When winding, keep the line flat against the spool wall; a slight twist can cause the line to bind during feed.
3. If your spool has a divided chamber for dual‑line operation, wind each half separately, ensuring both sides have equal length.
4. After reinstalling, give the head a few firm taps on a hard surface while the engine is running at low speed. This seats the line and confirms proper feed.

Refilling a Fixed‑Line Head

Fixed‑line heads require pre‑cut pieces rather than a continuous spool. The steps are slightly different:

1. Power down and remove the head cover as described earlier.
2. Pull the old line segments out of the slots. Inspect the slots for wear; replace the head if the slots are cracked.
3. Cut new line pieces to the exact length specified by the manufacturer (often 8‑10 inches each).
4. Insert each piece into its slot, pushing until the line seats fully. Some heads have a small retaining tab that clicks into place.
5. Reassemble the cover, reconnect power, and test. The line will not advance automatically; replace pieces when they wear down to about 2 inches.

Refilling an Automatic‑Feed Head

Automatic‑feed heads are convenient but can be finicky. Follow these guidelines:

1. Disconnect power and remove the cover.
2. Extract the spool; note any gear teeth or centrifugal weights that must stay aligned.
3. Clean the feed mechanism thoroughly; debris can impede the automatic advance.
4. Wind the new line exactly as you would for a bump‑feed spool, but pay close attention to the winding direction indicated on the spool (often counter‑clockwise for automatic heads).
5. Reinstall the spool, ensuring the gear teeth mesh correctly with the drive shaft.
6. Replace the cover, reconnect power, and run the trimmer at low speed. The head should feed line automatically within a few seconds.

Tips for Longer Line Life

• Match line to task. Use the thinnest line that still cuts your typical vegetation; thinner line flexes more and resists breakage.
• Keep the head clean. Grass buildup creates friction that wears line faster. Clean the spool cavity after each major job.
• Avoid hard surfaces. Cutting against concrete, rocks, or metal edges shreds line instantly. Use a blade attachment for edging.
• Store line properly. Keep spare spools in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight; UV exposure degrades nylon over time.
• Wind evenly. Uneven winding creates weak spots that snap under load. Take the time to wind smoothly.
• Use the correct feed technique. For bump‑feed heads, tap gently; excessive force can over‑advance line and cause jams.

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

• Using the wrong diameter. Always verify the owner’s manual. A line that is too thick will stall the motor; too thin will break constantly.
• Over‑winding the spool. Packing too much line prevents the bump mechanism from releasing line. Leave a small gap between the outer layer and the spool flange.
• Ignoring winding direction. Winding opposite the arrow causes the line to feed backward or jam. Double‑check the arrow before you start.
• Neglecting safety. Forgetting to disconnect the spark plug or battery can lead to accidental starts. Make this a habit every time.
• Leaving tails too long. Excess tail length can whip around and cause injury or wrap around the spool. Trim to the recommended length.
• Mixing line types on a dual‑line spool. Different shapes or diameters feed at different rates, leading to uneven cutting and vibration.

Maintenance After Refilling

Once the new line is installed, a few quick checks keep the trimmer performing at its best.

• Run the trimmer at low speed for 30 seconds and observe the line feed. It should advance smoothly without excessive vibration.
• Inspect the head for any wobble or loose screws; tighten as needed.
• Lubricate the spool shaft lightly with a silicone‑based spray if the manufacturer recommends it. Avoid petroleum‑based oils, which can degrade nylon.
• After each use, wipe the head clean and store the trimmer in a dry location. This prevents rust on metal components and prolongs line life.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I refill the trimmer line?

Frequency depends on the size of your yard and the toughness of the vegetation. For a typical residential lawn, a refill every 2‑4 hours of run time is common. Heavy brush work may require refilling every hour.

Can I use any brand of line in my trimmer?

Most trimmers accept standard nylon line of the correct diameter, but some automatic‑feed heads are calibrated for a specific line profile. Check the manual; using an incompatible line can void the warranty or cause feed problems.

Why does my line keep breaking near the head?

Breakage at the head usually indicates a sharp edge on the spool eyelet, a misaligned spool, or line that is too thin for the workload. Inspect the eyelets for burrs, ensure the spool seats correctly, and consider a slightly thicker or reinforced line.

My bump‑feed head won’t advance line. What should I do?

First, verify that the line is wound in the correct direction and that the spool is not over‑filled. Clean any debris from the bump mechanism. If the spring is weak or the bump button is worn, replace the head assembly.

The automatic‑feed head feeds too much or too little line.

Adjust the feed tension if your model has an adjustment screw. Otherwise, ensure the line diameter matches the specification exactly; a mismatch changes the centrifugal force that drives the feed.

How should I store extra trimmer line?

Keep spools in their original packaging or a sealed plastic bag, away from sunlight and extreme temperatures. This prevents the nylon from becoming brittle.
