Understanding Weed Eater Line Types

Before learning how to add more line to your weed eater, it’s important to understand the different types of trimmer line available, as each is designed for specific use cases and offers unique benefits. Choosing the right line for your needs will improve cutting efficiency, extend the life of your line, and reduce strain on your trimmer’s motor.

The three most common types of weed eater line are:

• Round Line: The most affordable and widely used type, round line is smooth and cylindrical, ideal for light residential use cutting grass and small weeds. It wears down quickly on rocky surfaces but is perfect for casual users who only trim their lawn a few times per month.
• Square Line: With sharp, flat edges that cut like a knife, square line is far more effective at cutting thick weeds and dense overgrowth. It lasts 2-3 times longer than round line in moderate use, making it ideal for medium to heavy residential use, or for users with larger yards.
• Serrated Line: Featuring tooth-like ridges along its length, serrated line is designed for heavy-duty commercial use. It’s extremely durable and can cut through woody brush and thick vegetation, making it the best choice for professional landscapers or users with very large, overgrown properties.

To help you choose the right line for your needs, refer to the comparison table below:

Preparing to Add More Line

Before you start refilling your weed eater, taking a few minutes to gather the right tools and follow safety precautions will make the process faster, safer, and less likely to result in damage to your trimmer or injury to yourself.

Gather Necessary Tools

You only need a few basic tools to add more line to your weed eater, most of which may already be included with your trimmer:

• Replacement trimmer line (matching the size and shape recommended by your manufacturer)
• Line trimmer wrench (usually included with your trimmer, used to remove the trimmer head)
• Sharp scissors or a dedicated line cutter
• Work gloves (to protect your hands from sharp line edges)
• Safety glasses (to protect your eyes from flying debris)
• A small brush or cloth (to clean grass and debris out of the trimmer head before refilling)

Safety Precautions

Weed eaters have sharp, fast-spinning components that can cause serious injury if handled improperly. Follow these safety steps before disassembling your trimmer:

• For gas-powered trimmers: Disconnect the spark plug wire to prevent accidental starting while you work.
• For battery-powered trimmers: Remove the battery pack fully from the trimmer body.
• For corded electric trimmers: Unplug the trimmer from the power outlet.
• If you just finished using the trimmer, wait 10-15 minutes for the trimmer head to cool down before touching it, as it can become very hot during use.
• Always wear safety glasses and gloves while working with trimmer line, as sharp edges can cut skin and small pieces of line can fly into your eyes.

Step-by-Step: How to Add More Line to Weed Eater

The process for adding more line varies slightly depending on the type of feed system your weed eater uses. The three most common systems are bump feed, automatic feed, and fixed line. Follow the steps below that match your trimmer model.

For Bump Feed Weed Eaters

Bump feed trimmers are the most common residential model, designed to release more line when you bump the bottom of the trimmer head against the ground. Follow these steps to refill the line:

1. Place the trimmer on a flat, stable surface. Use the trimmer wrench to loosen and remove the trimmer head from the bottom of the trimmer shaft. Some models have a quick-release button that lets you remove the head without a wrench.
2. Pull out any remaining old line from the spool inside the head. If the spool is reusable, brush off any grass, dirt, or debris that has collected inside the head to prevent jams later.
3. Cut a length of new trimmer line matching the total length recommended for your model (usually 6-10 feet for residential bump feed trimmers).
4. Insert one end of the line into one of the small holes on the edge of the spool. Push it through until it comes out the other side, then pull it tight so it’s secure.
5. Wind the line evenly around the spool in the direction indicated by the arrow on the spool (almost always clockwise). Keep the line tight and avoid overlapping layers, as this can cause jams when feeding. Leave 6-8 inches of line sticking out of one of the spool holes when you’re done winding.
6. Place the spool back into the trimmer head, making sure the line sticking out is aligned with the line outlet on the head.
7. Reattach the trimmer head to the shaft, tightening it securely with the wrench or quick-release latch.

For Automatic Feed Weed Eaters

Automatic feed trimmers use a small motor to release line automatically when you press the throttle, so you never need to bump the head on the ground. Refilling these models follows a similar process to bump feed trimmers, with a few small differences:

1. Remove the trimmer head as directed in your owner’s manual, using the included wrench or quick-release mechanism.
2. Remove the old spool and discard any remaining line. Clean out any debris from the trimmer head housing.
3. Cut new line to the length specified in your manual (usually 10-15 feet for automatic feed models).
4. Insert one end of the line into the spool’s anchor hole, then wind the line evenly around the spool in the correct direction, keeping it tight and avoiding overlap. Unlike bump feed models, you do not need to leave any line sticking out of the spool holes—leave the ends flush with the spool edge.
5. Reinsert the spool into the trimmer head, making sure the line is aligned with the feed outlet.
6. Reattach the head to the trimmer shaft securely. When you turn the trimmer on and press the throttle, the motor will automatically feed out the correct amount of line for use.

For Fixed Line Weed Eaters

Fixed line trimmers are older, simpler models that do not use a wound spool. Instead, they use pre-cut pieces of line that clip directly into slots on the trimmer head. Refilling these models is even faster:

1. Remove the old line pieces from the trimmer head slots. If the line is broken, use pliers to pull out any remaining fragments.
2. Cut two new pieces of line to the length specified in your manual (usually 8-12 inches for most fixed line models).
3. Insert one end of each line piece into the slots on opposite sides of the trimmer head. Push the line through until it clicks into place, or until it’s secure enough that it won’t pull out during use.
4. Trim any excess line with scissors so both sides are even. Reattach any covers or guards that were removed during the process.

Line Size and Length Best Practices

Using the correct line size and winding the right amount of line onto your spool is critical to ensuring your weed eater feeds line properly and runs efficiently without straining the motor. Follow these best practices to avoid common issues:

First, always check your owner’s manual for the recommended line diameter for your specific model. Most residential trimmers use line between 0.065 and 0.080 inches in diameter, while heavy-duty commercial models can handle line up to 0.105 inches. Never use line that is thicker than the manufacturer’s recommendation, as this will increase resistance on the trimmer head, reduce RPM, and can eventually burn out the motor. Thinner line than recommended will break easily and wear out quickly, requiring more frequent refills.

When it comes to line length, overfilling the spool is one of the most common causes of jams and poor line feeding. For bump feed models, wind a total of 6-10 feet of line onto the spool, leaving 6-8 inches sticking out of the outlet hole. For automatic feed models, most spools hold 10-15 feet of line total, with no line sticking out. Fixed line models only require 8-12 inch pieces, so there’s no risk of overfilling. If you notice line jamming frequently, you may be overfilling the spool—try reducing the amount of line you wind on next time.

Pro Tips for Longer Line Life

Once you know how to add more line to your weed eater, you can take a few extra steps to extend the life of your line and reduce how often you need to refill it. These pro tips are used by professional landscapers to keep their trimmers running efficiently all season:

• Wind line evenly and tightly: When winding line onto the spool, keep it taut and avoid overlapping or leaving gaps between layers. Unevenly wound line will cause the spool to wobble during use, leading to uneven cutting and faster line wear.
• Avoid hard surfaces: Never drag your weed eater across concrete, gravel, or rocks while the line is spinning. Contact with hard surfaces will quickly wear down or break the line, and can also damage the trimmer head.
• Store line properly: Keep unused trimmer line in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. UV exposure and extreme temperatures can make line brittle, causing it to break easily during use.
• Use high-quality line: Cheap generic line is often made from low-quality plastic that wears down quickly and breaks easily. Investing in a trusted brand of line will save you money in the long run by reducing how often you need to refill and replace line.
• Clean the trimmer head regularly: After each use, brush off grass, dirt, and debris from the trimmer head and spool. Built-up debris creates friction that wears down line faster and can cause jams when feeding.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Even experienced weed eater users make mistakes when adding more line that can lead to jams, reduced cutting performance, or damage to the trimmer. Avoid these common errors to keep your trimmer running smoothly:

• Winding line in the wrong direction: Most spools have an arrow printed on them indicating the correct winding direction (almost always clockwise). Winding line backwards will prevent it from feeding properly, or cause it to tangle and jam inside the head. Always check for the direction arrow before winding.
• Overfilling the spool: It’s tempting to wind as much line as possible onto the spool to avoid refilling often, but overfilling is the leading cause of line jams. When the spool is too full, line gets tangled inside the head and won’t feed out correctly. Stick to the recommended line length for your model to avoid this issue.
• Using the wrong line size: As mentioned earlier, using line that is too thick for your trimmer will strain the motor and reduce performance, while line that is too thin will break easily. Always check your owner’s manual for the recommended diameter before buying replacement line.
• Skipping the debris cleaning step: If you don’t clean out old grass and dirt from the trimmer head before adding new line, the debris will get caught between the line and spool, causing jams and uneven winding. A quick brush-out takes 10 seconds and prevents hours of frustration later.
• Skipping safety steps: Failing to disconnect the spark plug, remove the battery, or unplug the trimmer before disassembling can lead to accidental starting, which can cause serious injury. Always follow the safety precautions outlined earlier before working on your trimmer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are answers to the most common questions about adding more line to weed eaters:

How often should I add more line to my weed eater?

The frequency of refilling your weed eater line depends on how often you use the trimmer and the conditions you’re working in. For light residential use, you’ll need to add more line every 3-4 uses. For heavy use like large yards, thick weeds, or commercial landscaping, you may need to refill every 1-2 uses. Inspect the line before each use to check for wear or shortness, and refill as needed to avoid mid-job interruptions.

Can I use any type of line for my weed eater?

No, always use the line type, size, and shape recommended by your trimmer’s manufacturer. Using line that is too thick, too thin, or the wrong shape can cause poor feeding, reduced cutting performance, and even damage to the trimmer’s motor or spool. Check your owner’s manual for specific recommendations, or contact the manufacturer’s support team if you’re unsure.

Why does my weed eater line keep breaking after I add more?

Frequent line breakage after refilling is usually caused by one of a few common issues: using line that is too thick for your trimmer, overfilling the spool, hitting rocks or hard surfaces while trimming, or winding the line unevenly on the spool. Check each of these factors first to troubleshoot. If the line still breaks, it may be old or brittle from improper storage.

How much line should I wind onto the spool?

Most residential bump feed weed eaters require 6-10 feet of line total wound onto the spool, with 6-8 inches of line sticking out of the outlet hole. Automatic feed models typically hold 10-15 feet of line total, with no line sticking out. Fixed line models do not use wound spools, so you only need to install 8-12 inch pre-cut pieces. Never overfill the spool, as this will cause jams and poor line feeding.
