Understanding the Husqvarna 122C
The Husqvarna 122C features a 21.7 cc two‑stroke engine that delivers a maximum power output of 0.9 kW (1.2 hp). Its curved shaft provides a comfortable grip and reduces vibration, making it ideal for trimming grass, edging sidewalks, and clearing light brush. The trimmer uses a semi‑automatic feed head that advances line with a simple tap, and the fuel tank holds 0.33 L of a 50:1 gasoline‑to‑oil mixture. Because the engine is air‑cooled and uses a diaphragm carburetor, proper fuel mixing and regular cleaning of the air filter are essential for consistent starting performance.
Key components that affect starting include the primer bulb, choke lever, throttle trigger, and recoil starter. The primer bulb draws fuel into the carburetor, the choke enriches the mixture for cold starts, and the throttle trigger controls engine speed once the unit is running. Familiarity with these parts makes the starting routine intuitive and helps you diagnose problems quickly.
Safety Precautions Before Starting
Before you even think about pulling the starter rope, take a moment to ensure a safe working environment. Wear safety glasses or a face shield to protect your eyes from debris, and use hearing protection because the two‑stroke engine can exceed 100 dB at full throttle. Sturdy gloves improve grip on the starter handle and protect your hands from hot surfaces. Long pants and closed‑toe boots guard against accidental contact with the cutting line.
Clear the area of bystanders, pets, and any flammable materials. The trimmer’s exhaust can ignite dry grass or leaves, so keep a fire extinguisher or a bucket of water nearby. Inspect the cutting head for cracks or excessive wear; a damaged line can snap and become a projectile. Finally, verify that the fuel cap is tight and that there are no fuel leaks around the tank or carburetor.
Required Tools and Materials
Starting the Husqvarna 122C does not require a toolbox, but having a few items on hand makes the process smoother and prepares you for routine maintenance. The essential list includes:
- Fresh 50:1 pre‑mixed two‑stroke fuel (or separate gasoline and 2‑stroke oil for mixing)
- Clean, lint‑free rag for wiping the primer bulb and spark plug
- Spark plug socket (usually 13/16 in) and ratchet for occasional plug inspection
- Small flat‑head screwdriver for adjusting the carburetor idle screw if needed
- Replacement air filter and spark plug (keep spares in your tool bag)
- Protective gloves and safety glasses (as mentioned in the safety section)
Having these items ready eliminates downtime and ensures you can address minor issues without a trip to the store.
Step‑by‑Step Starting Procedure
Follow this ordered sequence each time you need to start the trimmer. The steps are written for a cold engine; adjustments for a warm engine are covered in the next section.
- Check fuel level. Open the fuel cap and verify that the tank contains enough 50:1 mixture for the job. If the fuel is older than 30 days, drain and replace it to avoid gummed carburetor passages.
- Prime the engine. Press the primer bulb 5–7 times until you see fuel moving through the clear fuel line. This fills the carburetor bowl and reduces the number of pulls needed.
- Set the choke. Move the choke lever to the full choke position (usually marked with a snowflake or “C” symbol). This enriches the air‑fuel mixture for a cold start.
- Set the throttle. Squeeze the throttle trigger fully and engage the throttle lock (if equipped) to hold the throttle wide open. This prevents the engine from stalling during the first few revolutions.
- Pull the starter rope. Grasp the starter handle firmly, place your foot on the trimmer’s rear handle for stability, and pull the rope briskly until you feel resistance, then give a strong, smooth pull. Repeat up to three times.
- Adjust choke after first fire. If the engine coughs or runs briefly, move the choke lever to the half‑choke or “run” position and pull the starter again. The engine should now start and run smoothly.
- Release throttle lock. Once the engine idles steadily, release the throttle lock and allow the engine to warm up for 30–60 seconds before applying load.
If the engine does not start after six pulls, stop and proceed to the troubleshooting section to avoid flooding the cylinder.
Cold Start vs Warm Start Differences
A cold start requires the full choke and primer routine described above because the engine’s internal components are at ambient temperature and the fuel has not yet vaporized in the carburetor. A warm start, on the other hand, typically needs only a single primer press (or none at all) and the choke set to the “run” or half‑choke position. The throttle can remain at idle rather than wide open. Attempting a cold‑start procedure on a warm engine often leads to flooding, which manifests as a strong gasoline smell and a starter rope that feels unusually heavy.
To determine whether the engine is warm, feel the cylinder head after a recent run; if it is still warm to the touch, treat it as a warm start. This simple check saves time and prevents unnecessary wear on the starter mechanism.
Troubleshooting Common Starting Issues
Even with perfect technique, the Husqvarna 122C can occasionally refuse to start. The table below outlines the most frequent symptoms, likely causes, and corrective actions.
| Symptom | Probable Cause | Remedy |
|---|---|---|
| Engine cranks but won’t fire | Stale or incorrect fuel mixture | Drain tank, refill with fresh 50:1 mix |
| Strong gasoline odor, rope feels heavy | Flooded engine | Remove spark plug, pull rope several times to clear excess fuel, reinstall plug |
| No resistance on starter rope | Broken recoil spring or starter pawl | Inspect starter assembly; replace damaged parts |
| Engine starts then dies immediately | Clogged air filter or dirty carburetor | Clean or replace air filter; clean carburetor jets |
| Spark plug wet with fuel | Over‑priming or choke left on too long | Dry plug, set choke to run, pull starter without priming |
Addressing these issues promptly keeps the trimmer reliable and prevents minor problems from escalating into costly repairs.
Maintenance Tips for Reliable Starts
Regular maintenance is the single most effective way to guarantee that your Husqvarna 122C starts on the first pull every time. Incorporate the following habits into your routine:
- Fuel management: Use fuel stabilizer if the trimmer will sit unused for more than 30 days. Drain the tank and run the engine dry before long‑term storage.
- Air filter care: Inspect the foam air filter before each use. Wash it in warm soapy water, rinse, dry, and lightly oil it with filter oil. Replace the filter annually or when it shows tears.
- Spark plug inspection: Remove the spark plug every 25 hours of operation. Check for carbon buildup, correct gap (0.5 mm), and replace if the electrode is eroded.
- Carburetor cleaning: At the start of each season, spray carburetor cleaner into the venturi and idle passages. This prevents varnish buildup that can cause hard starting.
- Starter rope care: Lubricate the recoil spring lightly with a silicone spray once a year to maintain smooth retraction.
- Cutting head maintenance: Keep the trimmer line at the proper length and replace the spool when the line wears down to less than 2 inches. A balanced head reduces vibration that can loosen engine mounts over time.
Consistent attention to these items dramatically reduces the frequency of starting problems and extends the overall lifespan of the unit.

Best Practices for Longevity
Beyond routine maintenance, adopting a few operational best practices will keep the trimmer running smoothly for years:
- Always let the engine warm up for at least 30 seconds before engaging the cutting head at full throttle.
- Avoid running the engine at wide‑open throttle for extended periods without load; this can overheat the cylinder.
- Store the trimmer in a dry, temperature‑controlled environment. Extreme cold thickens the fuel mixture, while excessive heat accelerates fuel degradation.
- Use only Husqvarna‑approved two‑stroke oil or a high‑quality synthetic equivalent rated for air‑cooled engines.
- Periodically check the tightness of all bolts and fasteners, especially the engine mount and handlebar clamps, as vibration can loosen them over time.
These habits reduce mechanical stress and keep the starting system in optimal condition.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Even experienced users can fall into habits that make starting harder or damage the engine. Watch out for these frequent errors:
- Over‑priming: Pressing the primer bulb more than 7 times floods the carburetor, leading to a wet spark plug and hard starting.
- Leaving the choke on: Forgetting to move the choke to the run position after the engine fires causes a rich mixture that stalls the engine.
- Using stale fuel: Fuel older than 30 days forms gum deposits that clog the carburetor jets and impede fuel flow.
- Pulling the starter rope at an angle: Angled pulls wear the starter pawl and can snap the rope. Always pull straight out.
- Neglecting the air filter: A dirty filter restricts airflow, causing a lean condition that makes the engine hard to start and run hot.
Correcting these mistakes is usually as simple as adjusting your routine, and the payoff is a trimmer that starts reliably every time.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many pulls should it take to start a cold Husqvarna 122C?
A properly primed and choked cold engine typically starts within 2–4 pulls. If it requires more than six pulls, stop and check for flooding or fuel issues.
Can I use regular gasoline without oil in the Husqvarna 122C?
No. The 122C is a two‑stroke engine that requires a 50:1 gasoline‑to‑oil mixture. Running straight gasoline will cause severe engine damage within minutes.
Why does the engine die when I release the throttle after starting?
This usually indicates the idle speed is set too low or the idle circuit in the carburetor is clogged. Adjust the idle screw slightly clockwise or clean the carburetor idle jet.
How often should I replace the spark plug?
Inspect the spark plug every 25 hours of operation and replace it at least once per season, or sooner if the electrode shows excessive wear or fouling.
What is the correct choke position for a warm start?
For a warm engine, set the choke lever to the “run” or half‑choke position (often marked with a flame symbol). Do not use full choke on a warm engine.
