Ignition System Fundamentals
The ignition system of a lawn mower is responsible for generating the high-voltage spark that ignites the fuel-air mixture in the engine’s combustion chamber. This process is typically achieved through a combination of a magneto, a spark plug, and a spark plug wire. When the engine’s crankshaft rotates, it turns the magneto, generating a high-voltage electrical current that is then transmitted to the spark plug.
- The spark plug is a critical component in the ignition system, as it provides the physical pathway for the spark to jump from the plug’s center electrode to its ground electrode, igniting the fuel-air mixture.
- The spark plug wire, typically made of a durable insulation material, carries the high-voltage electrical current from the magneto to the spark plug, minimizing energy loss and ensuring a strong spark.
Electrical Discharge and Spark Generation
When the high-voltage electrical current reaches the spark plug, it creates an electrical discharge that jumps from the center electrode to the ground electrode, producing a spark. This spark is incredibly hot, with temperatures reaching up to 5,000 degrees Celsius, hot enough to ignite the fuel-air mixture and power the engine. The precise timing and duration of the spark are critical to achieving optimal engine performance.
