Fertilizer Application
Fertilizer Application
Fertilizing your lawn before seeding will provide the necessary nutrients for healthy growth. However, it’s essential to choose a fertilizer that’s specifically designed for seeding lawns. These fertilizers are typically lower in nitrogen and higher in phosphorus, which promotes root development and seed germination. In Arvada, a balanced fertilizer with a ratio of 10-20-10 (nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium) is a good starting point.
- Apply a starter fertilizer at a rate of 1-2 pounds per 1,000 square feet.
- Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers, as they can promote excessive growth and create an environment prone to disease and pests.
Soil Aeration and Raking
Aeration and raking are essential steps in preparing your lawn for seeding. Aeration loosens compacted soil, allowing for better seed contact and water penetration. Raking, on the other hand, helps to remove dead grass, debris, and any remaining weeds. This will give your new seeds a clean slate to grow into a healthy, lush lawn.
With your soil and fertilizer ready, it’s time to move on to the next crucial step: sowing seeds. In the next section, we’ll cover the techniques and tools you’ll need to ensure a successful seeding process.
