What Is Standard Garden Hose Fitting Size?

The most common answer to What Is Standard Garden Hose Fitting Size? is 3/4-inch Garden Hose Thread (GHT), also referred to as 3/4"-11.5 NH (National Hose). This thread standard is used throughout North America for residential garden hoses, outdoor faucets (spigots), and most hose-end accessories such as nozzles, sprinklers, and quick-connect adapters. The designation "11.5" indicates 11.5 threads per inch (TPI), and the thread form is a straight (parallel) thread with a slight taper on the male end to help create a seal when a washer is compressed inside the female coupling.

It is important to distinguish GHT from National Pipe Thread (NPT), which is tapered and used for plumbing pipes. GHT is not compatible with NPT without an adapter. The 3/4-inch GHT fitting has an outside diameter of approximately 1.0625 inches (27 mm) on the male thread and an inside diameter of about 1.00 inch (25.4 mm) on the female thread. This size has become the de facto standard for consumer-grade garden hoses in the United States and Canada, ensuring broad interchangeability among brands.

While 3/4-inch GHT dominates the residential market, other sizes exist for specific applications. Some lightweight or coiled hoses use 1/2-inch or 5/8-inch fittings, and commercial or industrial equipment may employ 1-inch or larger connections. Knowing the standard size helps you purchase compatible replacements and avoid mismatched threads that leak or damage the hose bib.

Understanding GHT (Garden Hose Thread) Standards

Garden Hose Thread is defined by ASME B1.20.7 (formerly ANSI B1.20.7) and is sometimes called NH (National Hose) thread. The standard specifies a 60-degree thread angle, a flat crest and root, and a pitch of 11.5 threads per inch. Unlike tapered pipe threads, GHT threads are straight, meaning the diameter does not change along the length of the thread. Sealing is achieved by compressing a rubber or vinyl washer (often called a hose washer or gasket) against the face of the female fitting when the male end is tightened.

The standard also defines two classes of fit: Class A (loose fit) for general garden hose use and Class B (closer fit) for higher-pressure applications. Most consumer hoses and fittings are Class A. The male thread has a slightly tapered tip (about 1/16 inch taper per inch) to help center the connection and protect the washer from being pinched during assembly.

Because GHT is a straight thread, it does not seal on the threads themselves. Over-tightening can deform the washer or crack the female coupling, especially if it is made of plastic. Hand-tightening plus a quarter-turn with pliers is usually sufficient. If a connection leaks, replacing the washer is the first and most effective remedy.

Common Garden Hose Fitting Sizes

3/4-Inch GHT (Standard Residential)

This is the size found on virtually every garden hose sold at home centers in the U.S. and Canada. The male fitting screws onto a standard outdoor faucet (hose bib) which has female 3/4-inch GHT threads. The female end of the hose accepts sprinklers, nozzles, and other accessories with male 3/4-inch GHT threads. Adapters are available to convert this size to other thread standards.

1/2-Inch and 5/8-Inch Fittings

Some lightweight, expandable, or coiled hoses use smaller diameter fittings, typically 1/2-inch or 5/8-inch GHT. These are less common and often found on specialty hoses designed for RVs, marine use, or small balconies. They require specific adapters to connect to a standard 3/4-inch spigot. Always check the packaging or measure the fitting before purchasing accessories.

1-Inch and Larger Commercial Sizes

Commercial landscaping, agricultural irrigation, and fire protection systems may use 1-inch, 1-1/4-inch, or 1-1/2-inch NH threads. These are not interchangeable with residential 3/4-inch GHT. They follow the same thread pitch (11.5 TPI for 1-inch, 11 TPI for larger sizes) but have larger diameters. Adapters exist but are typically sourced from industrial supply houses rather than retail hardware stores.

How to Measure Your Garden Hose Fitting

If you are unsure what size fitting your hose or spigot uses, follow these steps to measure accurately:

1. Identify the thread type. Look at the male threads. If they appear straight (parallel) and the fitting uses a washer inside the female coupling, it is likely GHT. If the threads are tapered and no washer is present, it may be NPT.
2. Measure the outside diameter of the male thread. Use a caliper or a ruler with millimeter markings. Measure across the thread crests at the widest point. For 3/4-inch GHT, the OD is approximately 1.0625 inches (27 mm). For 1/2-inch GHT, OD is about 0.84 inches (21.3 mm). For 5/8-inch GHT, OD is about 0.92 inches (23.4 mm).
3. Measure the inside diameter of the female thread. Place the caliper jaws inside the female fitting and measure the diameter at the thread roots. For 3/4-inch GHT, the ID is roughly 1.00 inch (25.4 mm).
4. Count threads per inch (TPI). Use a thread pitch gauge or count the number of thread peaks in one inch along the male thread. Standard GHT is 11.5 TPI for 3/4-inch and 1-inch sizes.
5. Compare to a known standard. If you have a standard garden hose with a known 3/4-inch GHT fitting, try threading it onto the unknown fitting. If it engages smoothly and the washer seats, the unknown fitting is also 3/4-inch GHT.
6. Record the measurements. Note the OD, ID, and TPI. Use these values when shopping for replacements or adapters to ensure compatibility.

Accurate measurement prevents purchasing the wrong adapter and avoids damaging threads by forcing mismatched sizes together.

Types of Garden Hose Connectors and Adapters

Beyond the basic male and female fittings molded onto the hose, a wide range of connectors and adapters extend functionality:

• Quick-Connect Couplers: Push-to-connect fittings that snap onto the hose end and accept interchangeable accessories. They typically have a 3/4-inch GHT base and a proprietary quick-connect socket.
• Y-Shutoff Valves: Split a single spigot into two independently controlled outlets, each with 3/4-inch GHT male threads.
• Hose Menders (Splicers): Repair a damaged hose by cutting out the bad section and inserting a barbed splicer secured with clamps. Available in 1/2-inch, 5/8-inch, and 3/4-inch hose ID sizes.
• GHT to NPT Adapters: Convert garden hose thread to National Pipe Thread for connecting to plumbing pipes, pressure washers, or industrial equipment.
• Swivel Adapters: Allow the hose to rotate freely at the connection point, reducing kinks and stress on the fitting.
• Threaded Caps and Plugs: Seal off unused spigots or hose ends to keep out debris and insects.
• Backflow Preventers (Vacuum Breakers): Required by code in many areas, these screw onto the spigot (3/4-inch GHT) before the hose to prevent contaminated water from siphoning back into the potable supply.

When selecting any adapter, verify both thread size and thread type (GHT vs. NPT vs. BSP) to ensure a proper seal.

Choosing the Right Fitting for Your Needs

Selecting the correct fitting involves three considerations: thread compatibility, hose inner diameter, and material durability.

First, confirm the thread standard on both the water source (spigot) and the accessory (nozzle, sprinkler). Most residential setups are 3/4-inch GHT on both ends. If you encounter a different thread, use a dedicated adapter rather than forcing the connection.

Second, match the hose inner diameter (ID) to the barb size on menders, quick-connect bases, and swivel fittings. Common hose IDs are 1/2-inch, 5/8-inch, and 3/4-inch. A 5/8-inch hose requires a 5/8-inch barb; using a 3/4-inch barb on a 5/8-inch hose will leak, and a 5/8-inch barb on a 3/4-inch hose will not fit.

Third, choose materials suited to the environment. Brass fittings resist corrosion and are ideal for permanent installations. Stainless steel offers maximum durability for high-pressure or commercial use. Plastic (nylon or polypropylene) fittings are lightweight and inexpensive but can crack under impact or UV exposure. For drinking-water-safe applications, look for fittings labeled "lead-free" and "NSF/ANSI 61 certified."

Common Mistakes When Selecting Hose Fittings

• Confusing GHT with NPT: NPT threads are tapered and seal on the threads; GHT threads are straight and seal with a washer. Connecting them directly strips threads and leaks. Always use a GHT-to-NPT adapter.
• Ignoring Hose ID vs. Fitting Size: Buying a 3/4-inch GHT mender for a 5/8-inch ID hose is a common error. The thread size (GHT) refers to the connection, not the hose bore.
• Over-Tightening: Because GHT seals via a washer, excessive force crushes the washer, cracks plastic couplings, or strips soft brass threads. Hand-tight plus a slight turn is enough.
• Reusing Old Washers: Hardened, cracked, or missing washers cause leaks. Replace washers annually or whenever a connection drips.
• Mixing Metric and Imperial: Some imported hoses use BSP (British Standard Pipe) threads, which have a 55-degree angle and different pitch. They look similar but will not seal on GHT. Check for "BSP" markings.
• Neglecting Backflow Prevention: Connecting a hose directly to a potable water supply without a vacuum breaker risks contamination. Many municipalities require it by law.

Tips and Best Practices for Leak-Free Connections

• Inspect washers before each season. Keep a spare pack of rubber hose washers (flat or O-ring style) in your tool kit.
• Use Teflon tape on threaded adapters only. Do not use tape on GHT-to-GHT connections; the washer provides the seal. Tape is appropriate on the NPT side of a GHT-to-NPT adapter.
• Lubricate threads lightly. A dab of silicone grease on male threads eases assembly and prolongs washer life.
• Store hoses coiled and off the ground. This prevents kinks that stress fittings and reduces UV degradation of plastic couplings.
• Drain hoses before freezing temperatures. Water trapped in fittings expands and can crack brass or plastic.
• Match flow requirements. For high-volume tasks (pressure washing, large sprinklers), use 3/4-inch ID hose and full-flow fittings to minimize pressure drop.
• Label adapters. If you keep multiple adapters (GHT-to-NPT, GHT-to-BSP), label them with a permanent marker to avoid trial-and-error.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the standard garden hose fitting size in the US?

The standard garden hose fitting size in the United States is 3/4-inch Garden Hose Thread (GHT), also known as 3/4"-11.5 NH. This size fits virtually all residential spigots, nozzles, and hose-end accessories sold in North America.

Can I connect a garden hose to an NPT faucet?

Not directly. NPT (National Pipe Thread) is tapered and seals on the threads, while GHT is straight and seals with a washer. You must use a GHT-to-NPT adapter, which has 3/4-inch GHT on one side and the appropriate NPT size (usually 1/2-inch or 3/4-inch NPT) on the other.

How do I know if my hose fitting is GHT or BSP?

Check for markings: GHT fittings are often stamped "GHT" or "NH." BSP fittings may be marked "BSP" or "G." You can also measure the thread pitch: GHT is 11.5 TPI for 3/4-inch; BSP parallel (G) is 14 TPI for 3/4-inch. The thread angle differs (60° for GHT, 55° for BSP), but that is harder to measure without a gauge.

Why does my hose leak at the faucet?

The most common cause is a worn, missing, or improperly seated washer inside the female hose coupling. Replace the washer with a new rubber or vinyl one. If the leak persists, inspect the male threads on the faucet for damage or debris, and ensure you are not cross-threading the connection.

What size is a standard garden hose washer?

A standard garden hose washer for 3/4-inch GHT has an outer diameter of about 1 inch (25.4 mm), an inner diameter of about 0.625 inch (15.9 mm), and a thickness of roughly 0.125 inch (3.2 mm). They are sold as "3/4-inch hose washers" and are universally compatible with 3/4-inch GHT female couplings.

Can I use a 3/4-inch GHT fitting on a 5/8-inch hose?

The thread size (3/4-inch GHT) refers to the connection, not the hose bore. You can have a 3/4-inch GHT fitting with a 5/8-inch barb for a 5/8-inch ID hose. However, a fitting with a 3/4-inch barb will not fit a 5/8-inch hose. Always match the barb size to the hose inner diameter.

Are quick-connect fittings compatible with standard GHT?

Most quick-connect systems have a base that screws onto a 3/4-inch GHT male or female thread. The quick-connect socket and plug themselves are proprietary to each brand (e.g., Gardena, Melnor, Orbit). They are not interchangeable across brands, but the threaded base is standard GHT.

How often should I replace garden hose washers?

Replace washers at the start of each watering season, or whenever you notice a leak at a connection. Washers degrade from UV exposure, chlorine, and compression set. A fresh washer costs pennies and prevents water waste.
