What Is Garden Hose Thread?

Garden Hose Thread (GHT) is a specific screw thread profile used on the majority of residential garden hoses in North America. The thread is a straight (parallel) thread with a 3/4‑inch nominal diameter and a pitch of 11.5 threads per inch (TPI). Because the thread is straight rather than tapered, it relies on a rubber or plastic washer seated inside the female coupling to create a watertight seal.

The male end of a garden hose features external threads, while the female end (found on nozzles, sprinklers, and faucet adapters) has internal threads. When the two are screwed together, the washer compresses against the face of the male fitting, preventing water from escaping. This design is simple, reliable, and has remained largely unchanged for decades.

You will often see the abbreviation “GHT” stamped on the metal or plastic coupling, sometimes accompanied by “3/4‑11.5 NH” which stands for “National Hose” – the older name for the same standard. Knowing this terminology helps you purchase the correct replacement parts and avoid mismatched connections.

Understanding GHT Standards

History of GHT

The garden hose thread originated in the early 20th century as manufacturers sought a universal coupling for residential water delivery. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) later formalized the dimensions under the standard ASME B1.20.7, which defines the thread form, major diameter, pitch diameter, and minor diameter for 3/4‑inch garden hose connections.

ANSI/ASME Standards

ASME B1.20.7 specifies a 60‑degree thread angle, a major diameter of 1.0625 inches, a pitch diameter of 1.0175 inches, and a minor diameter of 0.9725 inches. The standard also calls out the required washer material (typically EPDM rubber) and the recommended torque for assembly. Adherence to this standard ensures that any GHT‑compliant hose will thread onto any GHT‑compliant fitting regardless of brand.

Because the standard is widely adopted, you can confidently mix and match hoses, nozzles, quick‑connect adapters, and pressure‑regulating valves without worrying about thread mismatch. The only caveat is that some specialty industrial hoses use different thread forms (such as NPT or BSP) which are not interchangeable with GHT.

GHT vs Other Thread Types

Garden Hose Thread is just one of many thread standards used in plumbing and fluid transfer. The table below highlights the key differences between GHT and three other common thread types you may encounter.

Notice that NPT is tapered, which means it seals by thread interference rather than a washer. BSP can be either parallel or tapered depending on the variant. NHR is a completely different size and pitch, used only for fire‑service equipment. Never attempt to force a GHT fitting onto an NPT or BSP thread; the mismatch will damage both components and leak.

How to Identify GHT on Your Hose

Identifying whether a hose or fitting uses Garden Hose Thread is straightforward if you follow these steps.

1. Locate the coupling at the end of the hose. Most residential hoses have a metal or brass male fitting on one end and a female fitting on the other.
2. Look for stamped markings. GHT couplings often carry “GHT”, “3/4‑11.5 NH”, or “3/4‑11.5” embossed on the hex or the body.
3. Measure the outside diameter of the male threads with a caliper. A true GHT male thread measures approximately 1.0625 inches across the peaks.
4. Count the threads per inch. Use a thread gauge or a ruler to count the number of thread peaks in one inch; you should count 11.5.
5. Check the thread profile. GHT threads have a 60‑degree V‑shape with a flat crest and root. If the threads appear tapered (getting smaller toward the tip), the fitting is likely NPT, not GHT.
6. Verify the washer seat. Inside the female coupling there should be a smooth, flat seat for a rubber washer. The presence of this seat is a strong indicator of GHT design.

If any of these checks fail, the fitting may be a different thread standard. In that case, you will need an appropriate adapter to connect it to a standard garden hose.

Common GHT Sizes and Dimensions

While the 3/4‑inch GHT is by far the most common, there are a few variations you should be aware of.

• Standard 3/4‑inch GHT – 11.5 TPI, major diameter 1.0625 in. Used on virtually all residential hoses.
• 1‑inch GHT (rare) – Some commercial‑grade hoses use a 1‑inch nominal size with 11.5 TPI. The major diameter is about 1.3125 in.
• Metric GHT equivalents – In some European markets you may find a 19 mm (≈3/4‑inch) parallel thread with 11.5 TPI, essentially the same geometry but labeled in metric.

All standard garden hose accessories (nozzles, quick‑connects, Y‑splitters, pressure regulators) are built to the 3/4‑inch GHT specification. When purchasing replacements, confirm the product description mentions “3/4‑inch GHT” or “3/4‑11.5 NH” to guarantee compatibility.

Connecting GHT to Other Fittings

Adapters and Couplers

Because many plumbing fixtures use NPT or BSP threads, you will often need an adapter to join a garden hose to a faucet, pump, or irrigation valve. The most common adapters are:

• GHT male × NPT female – Allows a garden hose to screw onto a standard pipe thread faucet.
• GHT female × NPT male – Lets a pipe‑threaded device (such as a pressure gauge) attach to a hose end.
• GHT × BSP – Used when connecting to British‑standard taps or European equipment.
• Quick‑connect couplers – Push‑fit fittings that snap onto the GHT male end, providing tool‑free connection and disconnection.

When selecting an adapter, verify that the non‑GHT side matches the exact thread type and size of the target fitting. Using a mismatched adapter will result in leaks or stripped threads.

Thread Seal Tape Usage

GHT connections rely on a washer for sealing, so thread seal tape (PTFE tape) is generally not required on the GHT side. However, when you are adapting GHT to a tapered thread such as NPT, apply two to three wraps of PTFE tape on the NPT male threads only. Do not tape the GHT threads; the tape can interfere with the washer seat and cause leaks.

Tips and Best Practices for GHT Connections

• Always ensure the rubber washer is present, clean, and undamaged before threading a hose onto a fitting.
• Hand‑tighten the connection first, then give it a quarter turn with pliers if needed. Over‑tightening can crush the washer and deform the threads.
• Store hoses coiled loosely and out of direct sunlight to prevent the rubber washer from drying out and cracking.
• Replace washers annually or whenever you notice a slow drip at the connection.
• Use a hose‑end shut‑off valve to relieve pressure before disconnecting; this reduces wear on the threads and washer.
• When using quick‑connect couplers, lubricate the O‑ring lightly with silicone grease to extend its life.
• Keep a spare set of washers and a few common adapters in your tool kit for quick repairs.

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

• Forcing mismatched threads – Trying to screw a GHT fitting onto an NPT or BSP thread will strip the threads. Always use the correct adapter.
• Omitting the washer – Without the washer, the straight GHT threads cannot seal, leading to immediate leaks. Check the washer every time you reconnect.
• Over‑tightening with tools – Excessive torque crushes the washer and can crack the female coupling. Hand‑tight plus a slight snug is sufficient.
• Using PTFE tape on GHT threads – Tape prevents the washer from seating properly. Reserve tape for tapered threads only.
• Ignoring worn or cracked washers – A degraded washer is the most common cause of drips. Replace it at the first sign of wear.
• Connecting under pressure – Disconnecting a pressurized hose can cause the fitting to blow off, damaging threads and creating a safety hazard. Always depressurize first.

Maintenance and Longevity of GHT Fittings

Proper care extends the service life of both hoses and their threaded couplings. After each use, drain the hose completely and hang it in a shaded area. UV exposure degrades the rubber washer and can make plastic couplings brittle. Periodically inspect the threads for corrosion, especially on brass fittings; a light coat of silicone spray can protect the metal surfaces.

If you notice white mineral deposits (scale) on the threads, soak the coupling in a vinegar solution for 30 minutes, then scrub gently with a nylon brush. Rinse thoroughly and dry before reinstalling the washer. For metal couplings that have seized, apply a penetrating oil, wait 15 minutes, and then work the threads back and forth gently with a wrench. Avoid using excessive force, which can round off the hex flats.

Replacing the entire coupling is sometimes more economical than repairing heavily corroded threads. Most hardware stores sell replacement male and female GHT couplings that can be crimped or clamped onto the hose end with a hose‑clamp tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does GHT stand for?

GHT stands for Garden Hose Thread, the standardized straight thread used on most residential garden hoses in North America.

Is GHT the same as NPT?

No. GHT is a straight (parallel) thread that seals with a washer, while NPT is a tapered thread that seals by thread interference. They are not interchangeable without an adapter.

Can I use Teflon tape on garden hose threads?

Generally, no. The washer provides the seal on GHT connections. Teflon tape should only be used on the tapered side of an adapter (e.g., NPT), not on the GHT threads themselves.

What size is a standard garden hose thread?

The standard size is 3/4‑inch nominal diameter with 11.5 threads per inch (3/4‑11.5 NH). The major diameter measures about 1.0625 inches.

How do I fix a leaking garden hose connection?

First, turn off the water and relieve pressure. Unscrew the connection, inspect the rubber washer for cracks or flattening, and replace it if necessary. Clean the threads, re‑install the washer, hand‑tighten, and give a slight additional turn. If the leak persists, check for damaged threads or a cracked coupling and replace the fitting.
