Why Winterizing Matters

Water left inside a pressure washer can freeze, expand, and crack the pump housing, seals, and internal passages. Even a small amount of residual water can cause significant damage when temperatures drop below freezing. Generac pressure washers, like most gas‑powered units, contain a high‑pressure pump, a gasoline engine, and a network of hoses and fittings that are all vulnerable to ice formation. Winterizing eliminates moisture, lubricates moving parts, and protects metal surfaces from corrosion. The result is a machine that starts reliably in the spring and avoids expensive pump replacements or engine overhauls.

Tools and Materials Needed

Before you begin, gather the following items so the process flows without interruptions:

• Owner’s manual for your specific Generac model
• Adjustable wrench or socket set
• Bucket or large container for catching water
• Garden hose with a shut‑off valve
• RV‑type non‑toxic antifreeze (propylene glycol based)
• Fuel stabilizer (if the unit will sit for more than 30 days)
• Clean rags or shop towels
• Protective gloves and safety glasses
• Plastic sheeting or a breathable cover for storage

Having these supplies on hand reduces the chance of skipping a step because a tool is missing.

Preparing the Pressure Washer

Start by moving the pressure washer to a well‑ventilated, level area outdoors or in a garage with the door open. Turn off the fuel valve and allow the engine to cool completely if it has been running. Disconnect the spark plug wire to prevent accidental starts. Remove any attachments such as nozzles, surface cleaners, or detergent injectors. Inspect the high‑pressure hose for cracks or wear; replace it if damage is evident. Finally, place a bucket beneath the pump’s drain plug to catch the water that will be expelled during the draining steps.

Step-by-Step Winterization Process

1. Shut off the water supply – Close the garden hose valve and detach the hose from the pump inlet. This stops new water from entering the system.
2. Run the pump dry – Start the engine and let it run for 30–60 seconds with the trigger gun open. This forces remaining water out of the pump and high‑pressure hose. Shut the engine off immediately after.
3. Open the pump drain plug – Using the appropriate wrench, remove the drain plug located on the bottom of the pump. Allow all water to drain into the bucket. Replace the plug once the flow stops.
4. Drain the hose and gun – Hold the trigger gun open and elevate the hose to let gravity pull out any trapped water. Coil the hose loosely to avoid kinks.
5. Add antifreeze to the pump – Pour RV‑type antifreeze into the pump inlet until it flows out of the outlet fitting. This coats internal surfaces and prevents any residual moisture from freezing.
6. Circulate antifreeze – Reattach the garden hose to the inlet, turn on the water briefly (just a few seconds) to push antifreeze through the pump and out the outlet. Then shut off the water and disconnect the hose.
7. Stabilize the fuel – If the unit will be stored longer than a month, add fuel stabilizer to the gas tank according to the product instructions. Run the engine for a minute to distribute the treated fuel through the carburetor.
8. Lubricate moving parts – Apply a light coat of silicone spray or light oil to the pump’s external fittings, the throttle linkage, and any exposed metal surfaces to ward off rust.

Following these eight steps ensures that every water pathway is cleared, protected, and ready for long‑term storage.

Protecting the Pump and Engine

The pump is the heart of a pressure washer, and its internal seals are especially sensitive to freezing. After the antifreeze circulation, consider removing the pump’s check valve (if accessible) and spraying a small amount of penetrating oil into the valve seat. This extra step prevents the valve from seizing during months of inactivity. For the engine, change the oil if it is due for service; fresh oil holds fewer contaminants that can cause corrosion. Remove the spark plug, pour a teaspoon of engine oil into the cylinder, pull the starter rope a few times to distribute the oil, then reinstall the plug. This “fogging” procedure coats the cylinder walls and piston rings.

Storing the Unit Properly

Choose a dry, temperature‑controlled space such as a heated garage, basement, or insulated shed. Place the pressure washer on a sturdy pallet or wooden blocks to keep it off a potentially damp concrete floor. Cover the unit with a breathable fabric cover or a loose plastic sheet that allows air circulation; avoid sealing it tightly, which can trap moisture. Keep the fuel tank at least 50 % full to minimize condensation, and store the unit upright to prevent oil from leaking into the combustion chamber. Periodically check the cover for tears and the area for signs of pests.

Comparison of Winterizing Methods

Tips and Best Practices

• Perform winterization before the first hard freeze; late autumn is ideal.
• Label the fuel tank with the date stabilizer was added for future reference.
• Keep a maintenance log noting the date, steps performed, and any parts replaced.
• Use only propylene‑glycol based antifreeze; automotive ethylene‑glycol is toxic and can damage pump seals.
• If you own multiple pressure washers, winterize them all in one session to save time.
• Inspect the high‑pressure hose for abrasions before storage; replace if the outer jacket is compromised.
• Store the trigger gun and nozzles in a sealed plastic bag with a desiccant packet to keep them dry.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

One frequent error is skipping the antifreeze step and assuming that draining alone is sufficient. Even a few milliliters of water in the pump’s check valve can expand and crack the housing. Another mistake is using automotive antifreeze, which contains corrosion inhibitors that can degrade the pump’s brass and rubber components. Forgetting to stabilize the fuel leads to gummed carburetors and hard starting in spring. Over‑tightening the pump drain plug can strip threads, causing leaks later. Finally, covering the unit with a non‑breathable tarp traps humidity, promoting rust on the frame and engine. Avoid these pitfalls by following the step‑by‑step guide and the tips above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use regular automotive antifreeze in my Generac pressure washer?

No. Automotive antifreeze is ethylene‑glycol based and contains additives that can damage pump seals and internal passages. Use only RV‑type propylene‑glycol antifreeze, which is non‑toxic and safe for pressure washer components.

How often should I winterize my pressure washer?

Winterize once per year before the first sustained freezing temperatures. If you live in an area with occasional cold snaps, consider a quick drain‑and‑antifreeze cycle each time the forecast predicts a freeze.

Do I need to change the oil before storage?

Changing the oil is recommended if the oil change interval is due or if the oil appears dark and contaminated. Fresh oil reduces the chance of acidic contaminants corroding engine internals during months of inactivity.

What if I don’t have a heated storage space?

If only an unheated shed is available, ensure the unit is thoroughly drained, antifreeze circulated, and the fuel tank is full with stabilizer. Add a moisture‑absorbing product (silica gel packs) inside the cover and check the unit monthly for condensation.

Is it necessary to remove the spark plug for fogging?

Removing the spark plug allows you to inject oil directly into the cylinder, ensuring an even coating on the piston and cylinder walls. This step is highly recommended for long‑term storage exceeding three months.

Conclusion

Winterizing a Generac pressure washer is a straightforward process that protects your investment from freeze damage, corrosion, and fuel degradation. By draining all water, circulating RV‑type antifreeze, stabilizing the fuel, lubricating key components, and storing the unit in a dry, ventilated space, you ensure reliable performance when the cleaning season returns. Remember to follow the step‑by‑step guide, avoid common mistakes such as using the wrong antifreeze or sealing the cover tightly, and keep a maintenance log for future reference. With these practices in place, your pressure washer will be ready for action as soon as the weather warms.
