What Is a Pressure Washer Trailer?
A pressure washer trailer is a portable frame mounted on wheels that carries a high-pressure washer unit, water tank, pump, and related components. It is designed to be towed behind a truck, SUV, or ATV, making it ideal for jobsites, farms, event venues, and large residential properties. The trailer provides a stable platform that keeps all equipment organized and protected during transport.
These trailers range from simple open-frame designs to fully enclosed aluminum or steel boxes. Some are built for light residential use with small electric washers, while others are engineered to handle gas-powered units producing over 4,000 PSI. The design you choose depends on the intended application, the weight of your pressure washer, and how much portability you require.
Benefits of Building Your Own
Building your own pressure washer trailer offers several compelling advantages over purchasing a factory-made unit. First, you have complete control over dimensions, materials, and features. You can size the frame to fit your exact washer model and add custom compartments for hoses, nozzles, and chemicals.
Cost savings are another major benefit. Commercial pressure washer trailers with similar specifications can cost two to four times more than the materials needed for a DIY build. Additionally, the construction process itself teaches valuable skills about welding, plumbing, and mechanical assembly that you can apply to future projects.
Portability is at the heart of every DIY trailer build. When you understand how to make a pressure washer trailer, you can design it to be as lightweight or as rugged as your workflow demands. Need to tow it with a compact SUV? You can keep the frame slim. Need to haul heavy accessories? You can reinforce the deck and add storage racks.
Types of Pressure Washer Trailers
Commercial vs. Residential Trailers
Commercial trailers are built for daily, heavy-duty use. They typically feature steel frames, pneumatic tires, enclosed bodywork, and mounting brackets for large gas-powered pressure washers. These units often include built-in water tanks, chemical injectors, and reel systems for hose management.
Residential trailers are lighter and simpler. They usually use aluminum or lighter-gauge steel frames and are paired with electric or small gas pressure washers. The focus is on easy towing, compact storage, and basic functionality. If you are cleaning driveways, decks, and vehicles around your property, a residential design is often more than sufficient.
Enclosed vs. Open Frame Designs
Open-frame trailers expose the pressure washer and all components, which makes access quick and easy. They are lighter in weight and simpler to build, but they offer no protection from weather, dust, or road debris during transport.
Enclosed trailers house the equipment inside a box or canopy structure. This protects your investment from rain, sun damage, and theft. Enclosed designs take more time and materials to construct, but the added security and weather resistance are worth the effort for anyone who regularly transports equipment over long distances or stores it outdoors.

Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Planning and Design
The planning phase is the most important step in the entire build. Start by measuring your pressure washer unit from corner to corner, including any protruding handles or fittings. Add at least two inches of clearance on each side for airflow and easy removal. Decide on the trailer width based on your tow vehicle’s hitch rating and local road width regulations. Sketch a simple diagram showing the frame dimensions, wheel placement, hitch position, and where the washer and tank will sit. This diagram will serve as your blueprint throughout construction.
Step 2: Building the Frame
Cut your frame tubing to the planned lengths and weld or bolt the pieces together to form a rectangular platform. Ensure every joint is square by using a framing square before finalizing any welds or fasteners. The frame must support the full weight of the washer, tank, water, and accessories without flexing. If you are using a steel frame, apply a rust-inhibiting primer immediately after welding to protect the exposed metal. For aluminum frames, use aerospace-grade bolts and aluminum-friendly washers to prevent galvanic corrosion.
Next, attach the tongue and hitch assembly. The tongue should extend forward from the front of the frame at an angle that allows the trailer to track straight behind your vehicle. Install the receiver hitch and pin it securely. Mount the wheel assemblies according to the axle plan you designed, making sure both wheels are aligned and the axle is level with the frame.
Step 3: Mounting the Pressure Washer
Secure the pressure washer to the frame using heavy-duty mounting brackets or a custom cradle. The washer should sit low and centered on the trailer to maintain a low center of gravity, which improves towing stability. Use vibration-dampening rubber pads between the washer and the cradle to reduce stress on both the unit and the frame during transport. Double-check that all bolts are tightened to the manufacturer’s recommended torque specifications before moving the trailer.
Step 4: Installing the Water System
If your trailer design includes a water tank, mount it on the rear or side of the frame where it will not interfere with the washer’s operation. Connect the tank to the pressure washer pump using appropriate high-pressure fittings and hose routing. Install a shutoff valve between the tank and the pump so you can control water flow easily. If you plan to use a chemical injector, install it downstream of the pump to protect internal components from corrosive solutions. Run the high-pressure outlet hose to a reel or simply secure it with zip ties along the frame to prevent tangling during transport.
Step 5: Adding Electrical and Lighting
Install a small battery box on the trailer to power the pressure washer’s electric start motor, if applicable, and to run LED work lights. Use marine-grade wiring and waterproof connectors since the trailer will be exposed to the elements. Mount taillights, brake lights, and turn signals to comply with local traffic laws. A simple wiring harness designed for trailer use can be connected to your tow vehicle’s electrical system with a standard seven-pin connector.
Step 6: Finishing and Safety Checks
Apply paint or coating to all exposed metal surfaces to prevent rust and weathering. Install safety chains between the trailer and tow vehicle so the trailer cannot separate if the hitch fails. Attach a breakaway cable that activates the trailer brakes if it becomes disconnected. Finally, perform a complete inspection: check every bolt, test the wheel bearings, verify the hose connections for leaks, and confirm the pressure washer starts and runs correctly while mounted on the trailer. Take it for a short test tow at low speed before heading to a job site.
Comparison of Trailer Types
The following table compares the three most common trailer configurations to help you decide which design best fits your needs.
| Feature | Open Frame | Enclosed Box | Hybrid Canopy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weight | Lightest | Heaviest | Moderate |
| Weather Protection | None | Full | Partial |
| Construction Complexity | Simple | Advanced | Moderate |
| Material Cost | Low | High | Medium |
| Access to Equipment | Immediate | Requires opening | Easy side access |
| Best For | Light residential use | Commercial and long-distance transport | Contractors and mixed use |
Tips and Best Practices
- Keep the center of gravity low. Place the heaviest components near the axle line. This improves towing stability and reduces the risk of swaying at highway speeds.
- Use stainless steel hardware. Bolts, nuts, and washers made from stainless steel or galvanized steel resist rust far better than plain steel, especially when exposed to water and cleaning chemicals.
- Plan for hose storage. Install a reel or a simple hook system so the high-pressure hose stays secure during transit and is easy to deploy on-site.
- Add a grounding rod. If you clean in environments where static electricity can build up, grounding the trailer prevents dangerous discharge.
- Test the tongue weight. The tongue weight should be roughly 10 to 15 percent of the total trailer weight for safe towing. Adjust the placement of the washer and tank if the tongue is too light or too heavy.
- Use quick-connect fittings. These allow you to detach the pressure washer from the water supply in seconds without tools, which speeds up setup at every job.
- Document your build. Take photos and notes at every stage. If you ever need to replace a part or modify the trailer, your documentation will save significant time.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Even experienced builders make avoidable errors when constructing a pressure washer trailer. Being aware of these mistakes helps you prevent costly rework and safety hazards.
Underestimating the total weight. Many builders account for the washer and tank but forget to include fuel, water, hoses, nozzles, and the weight of the frame itself. Always weigh your assembled components and compare the total to your axle and hitch ratings before the first tow.
Poor frame welding. Weak welds are the leading cause of frame failure on homemade trailers. If you are not confident in your welding skills, use bolted gusset plates and structural brackets instead. A well-bolted joint can be just as strong and much easier to repair.
Ignoring vibration stress. Trailers experience constant vibration on the road. Every component must be secured with lock washers, thread-locking compound, or secondary safety wires. Loose bolts on a pressure washer mount can cause the unit to shift dangerously while driving.
Skipping the test tow. Some builders rush to the job site without testing the trailer at speed. Always do a slow test drive in a safe area, checking for rattles, swaying, wheel alignment issues, and electrical function before hauling expensive equipment to a client site.
Neglecting drainage. If water collects inside an enclosed trailer, it causes rust and mold. Install drain plugs or slope the floor slightly so any moisture can escape easily after cleaning sessions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I Build a Trailer for Any Pressure Washer?
In most cases, yes. As long as you design the frame and mounting system to match the dimensions and weight of your specific pressure washer unit, you can build a trailer to fit virtually any model. Always verify the washer’s weight, mounting hole pattern, and center of gravity before finalizing your frame design. Custom cradles and adjustable brackets make it possible to accommodate different sizes over time.
Do I Need a Special License or Registration?
Trailer registration requirements vary by state and country. In many regions, trailers under a certain weight threshold do not require a separate registration, but you should always check your local Department of Motor Vehicles or equivalent authority. Safety chains, working brake lights, and proper hitch ratings are commonly required regardless of trailer size.
How Much Weight Can a Homebuilt Trailer Hold?
The weight capacity depends on the frame material, axle rating, and hitch system you use. A well-built steel-framed trailer with a 2,000-pound-rated axle can safely carry approximately 1,500 to 1,800 pounds of equipment after accounting for the trailer’s own weight. Always stay well within the rated capacity of your weakest component to ensure safe operation.
Can I Tow It with a Car?
Yes, provided your car’s towing capacity exceeds the total trailer weight including cargo. Lightweight residential trailers built with aluminum frames and small tires can often be towed by most modern sedans and crossovers. Always consult your vehicle owner’s manual for the maximum recommended trailer weight and hitch class before towing.
How Do I Store the Trailer?
Store your trailer in a dry, covered area whenever possible. If outdoor storage is your only option, invest in a fitted tarp or canopy cover. Before long-term storage, drain all water from the tank and hoses, disconnect the battery, and apply a protective coating to any exposed metal surfaces. These steps will extend the lifespan of your trailer significantly.
