Understanding the Hunter Pro C Controller

Key Features

The Pro C offers up to 12 stations, three independent programs (A, B, C), and a built‑in seasonal adjust feature that automatically scales run times based on a percentage you set. It supports a rain sensor input, a master valve/pump start relay, and a cycle‑soak function that splits long run times into shorter cycles to reduce runoff on sloped terrain. The backlit LCD displays program, station, start time, and run time information, while the four navigation buttons (Program, Station, Time, and Enter) make menu navigation straightforward.

Display and Buttons Overview

The main screen shows the current program letter, active station number, start time, and run time. Pressing Program cycles through A, B, and C. Station increments the station number. Time adjusts the highlighted value (start time or run time). Enter confirms changes. A small lock icon appears when the controller is in “Program Lock” mode, preventing accidental edits.

Preparing for Programming

Gather Information

Before you begin, collect the following data for each zone: plant type, soil type, sun exposure, sprinkler head model, and desired precipitation rate. This information helps you calculate appropriate run times. Also note the local watering restrictions, if any, and the preferred watering days for each program.

Safety Precautions

Turn off the main water supply and disconnect power to the controller before wiring any new valves or sensors. Verify that the transformer voltage matches the controller’s rating (typically 24 VAC). Use waterproof wire connectors for all outdoor splices. After wiring, restore power and confirm the controller powers up without error codes.

Step‑by‑Step Programming Guide

1. Power on the controller and wait for the home screen to appear.
2. Select a program by pressing the Program button until the desired letter (A, B, or C) displays.
3. Set the current date and time if not already configured: press Time, adjust using the +/– arrows (or the Time button on newer models), then press Enter.
4. Choose watering days: with the program selected, press Station until “Days” appears, then use Time to toggle each day on or off. Press Enter to save.
5. Set start times: press Station until “Start Time” shows, adjust the hour and minute with Time, then press Enter. Repeat for up to four start times per program.
6. Assign stations to the program: press Station to cycle to station 1. Press Time to set the run time for that station (in minutes). Press Enter. Repeat for each station you want in this program.
7. Configure seasonal adjust (optional): navigate to the “Seasonal Adjust” menu, set a percentage (e.g., 100 % for summer, 50 % for spring), and press Enter.
8. Enable rain sensor (if installed): go to the “Sensor” menu, select “On”, and confirm.
9. Set cycle‑soak for stations prone to runoff: select the station, enter the “Cycle Soak” menu, define cycle length and soak time, then save.
10. Review and lock: scroll through the program summary to verify all entries. Press and hold Enter for three seconds to activate Program Lock.

Setting Up Zones and Run Times

Zone Configuration

Each station corresponds to a physical valve zone. Label the zones on the controller’s faceplate or keep a written map. Group zones with similar water requirements into the same program to simplify scheduling. For example, put all turf zones on Program A and all shrub zones on Program B. Run Time Adjustment

Calculate run time using the formula: Run Time (minutes) = (Desired Inches per Week × 60) / (Precipitation Rate (in/hr) × Days per Week). Adjust for soil infiltration rate and slope. After the initial setup, monitor the landscape for a week and tweak run times in 5‑minute increments until you achieve the target soil moisture depth.

Using Seasonal Adjust and Water Budget

The Seasonal Adjust feature applies a global percentage to all run times in the active program. Set it to 100 % during peak summer heat, then reduce to 70 % in early fall and 40 % in winter. The Water Budget menu lets you set a monthly percentage schedule, automating the transition so you don’t have to remember to change it manually. This feature is especially valuable for complying with municipal watering restrictions that vary by season.

Programming Multiple Programs (A, B, C)

Three independent programs allow you to tailor schedules for different plant groups or microclimates. Program A might run daily for high‑traffic turf, Program B could run every other day for moderate‑water shrubs, and Program C might run twice a week for drought‑tolerant natives. Each program retains its own start times, watering days, and seasonal adjust setting. Switch between programs with the Program button; the controller will execute the active program’s schedule while ignoring the others.

Advanced Features: Rain Sensor, Delay, and Cycle Soak

Rain Sensor: Connect a wired or wireless rain sensor to the “SEN” terminals. When the sensor detects sufficient rainfall, it sends a signal to pause all programs until the sensor dries out. Delay: The “Delay” function postpones the next scheduled start by a user‑defined number of hours (1‑24). Useful when a sudden storm is forecast after the schedule is set. Cycle Soak: For stations on slopes or compacted soils, enable Cycle Soak to break a 30‑minute run into three 10‑minute cycles with 15‑minute soak periods. This reduces runoff and improves infiltration.

Tips and Best Practices

• Label each station on the controller faceplate with a waterproof marker for quick identification.
• Run a “Test Program” (single start time, 1‑minute run per station) after any wiring changes to verify valve operation.
• Set the seasonal adjust to 100 % during the hottest month, then create a calendar reminder to lower it each month.
• Use the master valve/pump start relay if you have a pump; it prevents dry‑run damage.
• Back up your schedule by writing down start times, run times, and seasonal percentages in a notebook or spreadsheet.
• Inspect sprinkler heads monthly for clogs or misalignment; adjust run times accordingly.
• Enable Program Lock after finalizing the schedule to avoid accidental changes by children or pets.

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

• Overlapping start times across programs can cause the controller to run two programs simultaneously, exceeding the transformer’s capacity. Stagger start times by at least 30 minutes.
• Ignoring the rain sensor after installation leads to wasted water. Test the sensor by manually triggering it and confirming the controller pauses.
• Setting run times too long for clay soils causes runoff. Use the cycle‑soak feature or split the run into multiple start times.
• Forgetting to update the date/time after a power outage results in missed watering days. The Pro C retains time for up to 48 hours on its internal capacitor; replace the backup battery annually.
• Not using seasonal adjust leads to over‑watering in cooler months. Set a monthly reminder or use the Water Budget feature.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I reset the Hunter Pro C to factory defaults?

Press and hold the Program and Station buttons simultaneously for about ten seconds until the display flashes “RESET”. Release the buttons; the controller will reboot with factory settings. Note that this erases all programs, so back up your schedule first.

Can I use a wireless rain sensor with the Pro C?

The Pro C only supports a wired rain sensor on the SEN terminals. For wireless capability, you would need an add‑on module such as the Hunter Wireless Rain Sensor Kit, which connects to the same terminals via a receiver. (See Also:How To Fix A Sprinkler Line Break)

What is the maximum run time per station?

Each station can be programmed for up to 360 minutes (6 hours) per start time. If you need longer irrigation, use multiple start times within the same program.

How do I enable cycle‑soak for a single station?

Navigate to the desired station, press Time until “Cycle Soak” appears, set the cycle length (e.g., 10 min) and soak time (e.g., 15 min), then press Enter. The setting applies only to that station.

Does the Pro C support smart home integration?

Out of the box, the Pro C does not have Wi‑Fi or Zigbee. However, Hunter offers the “Hydrawise” Wi‑Fi module that plugs into the controller’s expansion port, enabling app control and integration with platforms like Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.
