Why You Might Need to Pick Up Sprinklers
There are several practical reasons why you might need to pick up sprinklers in Stardew Valley. One of the most common scenarios is farm reorganization. As you progress through the game and unlock new crafting recipes, you will likely want to redesign your farm layout to accommodate larger fields, more efficient irrigation systems, or decorative elements.
Another frequent reason is upgrading your sprinkler system. Early-game sprinklers only water a small area around them, but as you advance, you will gain access to quality and pressure nozzles that greatly expand their coverage. When these upgrades become available, you will want to replace your old sprinklers to maximize efficiency and reduce the time you spend maintaining your crops.
Additionally, you might need to temporarily remove sprinklers to plant seasonal crops in specific patterns, make room for new buildings or pathways, or clear debris that has accumulated over time. Understanding how to properly pick up sprinklers ensures that you do not waste resources or accidentally destroy valuable equipment.
Understanding Different Sprinkler Types
Before diving into the mechanics of picking up sprinklers, it is helpful to understand the different types available in the game. Each type has unique properties and crafting requirements that influence when and how you might want to move them.
Basic Sprinkler
The basic sprinkler is the first type you can craft, requiring five copper bars and one iridium bar. It waters crops in a 3×3 grid centered on the sprinkler itself, covering eight surrounding tiles. This type is ideal for early-game farming when your resource pool is limited.
Quality Sprinkler
The quality sprinkler requires one iridium bar, one gold bar, and one refined quartz. It waters crops in a 5×5 grid, covering twenty-four surrounding tiles. This is a significant upgrade that reduces the number of sprinklers needed for larger farms.
Pressure Nozzle
The pressure nozzle is not a standalone sprinkler but rather an attachment that can be added to existing sprinklers. It expands the watering area of any sprinkler by one tile in every direction, making it an excellent way to increase coverage without replacing entire systems.
Deluxe Retaining Soil
While not technically a sprinkler, deluxe retaining soil is worth mentioning because it reduces the frequency with which you need to water crops. It works alongside sprinklers to create highly efficient farming setups.
Controls for Picking Up Sprinklers by Platform
One of the most important aspects of learning how to pick up sprinkler Stardew Valley items is understanding the platform-specific controls. The method varies depending on whether you are playing on PC, console, or mobile devices. Here is a detailed breakdown of the controls for each platform.
PC Controls
On PC, picking up a sprinkler is straightforward. Simply approach the sprinkler you want to move and right-click on it. If you are holding a tool in your hand, you will need to switch to an empty hand or select a tool that can interact with objects, such as an axe or pickaxe. Right-clicking with an empty hand will pick up the sprinkler and place it back into your inventory.
Alternatively, you can use the scythe tool to cut down crops near sprinklers, which sometimes makes it easier to access them for pickup. However, the primary method remains the simple right-click interaction.
Console Controls
On consoles, the process is slightly different due to the controller layout. To pick up a sprinkler, you need to approach it and press the interact button, which is typically the ‘A’ button on Xbox controllers or the ‘X’ button on PlayStation controllers. Make sure you are not holding a tool that would cause you to swing instead of interact.
If you accidentally swing your tool instead of picking up the sprinkler, simply back away and try again. The key is to ensure your character is close enough to the sprinkler and that you are pressing the correct button.
Mobile Controls
On mobile devices, picking up sprinklers involves tapping and holding on the sprinkler you want to move. A small menu will appear, giving you options to interact with the object. Select the pickup option, and the sprinkler will be added to your inventory.
Mobile controls can sometimes be tricky due to the touch interface, so it is important to tap precisely on the sprinkler and not on adjacent crops or soil. If you have trouble selecting the sprinkler, try zooming in or adjusting your screen view.
Step-by-Step Guide to Picking Up Sprinklers
Now that you understand the controls for your platform, let us walk through the complete step-by-step process of picking up a sprinkler. This guide applies to all sprinkler types and ensures that you do not lose any items or resources during the process.
- Approach the sprinkler carefully. Walk your character directly adjacent to the sprinkler you want to pick up. Make sure there are no crops or obstacles blocking your path to the sprinkler.
- Select an appropriate tool or empty hand. Depending on your platform, you may need to have an empty hand selected or use a specific tool like an axe or pickaxe. On PC, right-clicking with an empty hand works best. On consoles, make sure you are pressing the interact button rather than the attack button.
- Interact with the sprinkler. On PC, right-click on the sprinkler. On consoles, press the interact button (A or X). On mobile, tap and hold on the sprinkler.
- Confirm the pickup. If a confirmation menu appears, select the option to pick up the sprinkler. On some platforms, the sprinkler will immediately be added to your inventory.
- Verify the sprinkler is in your inventory. Open your inventory menu and check that the sprinkler is now listed among your items. This confirms that the pickup was successful.
- Place the sprinkler in its new location. Exit your inventory and walk to where you want to place the sprinkler. Select it from your inventory and place it on the desired tile, just as you would when first placing it.
Following these steps ensures that you can move sprinklers efficiently without wasting time or resources. Remember that you can carry multiple sprinklers at once, so do not be afraid to pick up several at the same time if you are reorganizing a large section of your farm.
Using an Axe to Remove Sprinklers
In addition to the standard interaction method, you can also use tools to remove sprinklers. Using an axe to remove a sprinkler is a viable alternative, especially if you are having trouble selecting the sprinkler with an empty hand.
To use an axe, simply equip it in your hand and swing it at the sprinkler. The sprinkler will break and drop as an item on the ground. You can then walk over and pick up the item to add it to your inventory.
However, there is an important caveat to this method. If you use an axe to break a sprinkler, you will lose the sprinkler permanently unless you have a way to recover it. This is because breaking objects with tools can sometimes destroy them rather than allowing you to pick them up intact. Therefore, it is generally recommended to use the standard interaction method whenever possible.
That being said, using an axe can be useful in certain situations. For example, if you want to quickly clear a large area of sprinklers for a complete farm redesign, using an axe might be faster than picking up each individual sprinkler. Just be prepared to craft replacements if you choose this method.
Using a Pickaxe to Remove Sprinklers
Similar to using an axe, you can also use a pickaxe to remove sprinklers. The process is identical: equip the pickaxe, swing it at the sprinkler, and the sprinkler will drop as an item.
One advantage of using a pickaxe over an axe is that the pickaxe animation is slightly faster, which can make the process more efficient when removing multiple sprinklers. Additionally, the pickaxe is often more readily available since it is a tool you will use frequently for mining and combat.
As with the axe method, there is a risk of permanently losing the sprinkler if you are not careful. The item will appear on the ground as a collectible object, but if you do not pick it up immediately, it may disappear or be lost in tall grass or other farm debris.
It is also worth noting that using tools to break sprinklers does not consume any tool durability, so you can use this method as many times as needed without worrying about wearing out your equipment.
Sprinkler Comparison Table
To help you make informed decisions about which sprinklers to use and when to upgrade, here is a comparison table of the different sprinkler types available in Stardew Valley.
| Sprinkler Type | Coverage Area | Crafting Requirements | Best Use Case |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic Sprinkler | 3×3 grid (8 tiles) | 5 Copper Bars, 1 Iridium Bar | Early game, small farms |
| Quality Sprinkler | 5×5 grid (24 tiles) | 1 Iridium Bar, 1 Gold Bar, 1 Refined Quartz | Mid-game, medium to large farms |
| Pressure Nozzle | Expands any sprinkler by 1 tile in all directions | 5 Iridium Bars, 5 Gold Bars | Late game, maximizing coverage |
This table highlights the key differences between sprinkler types and can help you decide when it is worth investing in upgrades versus sticking with basic sprinklers. The pressure nozzle is particularly valuable for late-game farms where every tile of crop space counts.
Tips and Best Practices
Beyond simply knowing how to pick up sprinklers, there are several tips and best practices that can make your farming experience more efficient and enjoyable. These strategies will help you avoid common pitfalls and get the most out of your sprinkler systems.
Plan Your Farm Layout Before Moving Sprinklers
Before you start picking up sprinklers, take time to plan your new farm layout. Use graph paper or a digital tool to sketch out where you want to place your sprinklers for optimal coverage. This prevents you from having to move sprinklers multiple times, which can waste valuable in-game time.
Prioritize Quality Sprinklers for Efficiency
Once you have access to quality sprinklers, prioritize replacing your basic sprinklers with them. The increased coverage area means you need fewer sprinklers overall, which saves both resources and inventory space. Quality sprinklers are especially important for large-scale farming operations.
Invest in Pressure Nozzles for Maximum Coverage
In the late game, pressure nozzles become incredibly valuable. They allow you to expand the coverage of any sprinkler without replacing the entire system. This is particularly useful when you discover that your current sprinkler placement does not quite cover all the tiles you need.
Keep Your Inventory Organized
When picking up multiple sprinklers, your inventory can quickly become cluttered. Keep one section of your inventory dedicated to sprinklers and other farm equipment so you can easily access them when placing them in new locations.
Consider Seasonal Crop Patterns
Some crops grow in specific patterns that may not align with your current sprinkler placement. When planning to move sprinklers, consider the growth patterns of your crops and how they might affect future harvests.
Common Mistakes and Problems
Even experienced players sometimes encounter issues when trying to pick up sprinklers. Here are the most common mistakes and problems, along with solutions to help you avoid them.
Accidentally Breaking Sprinklers with Tools
One of the most common mistakes is accidentally using a tool like an axe or pickaxe to break a sprinkler instead of picking it up properly. This can result in losing the sprinkler permanently if you do not immediately pick up the dropped item.
Solution: Always approach sprinklers with an empty hand or the correct interaction method. If you must use a tool, make sure to pick up the dropped item immediately.
Inventory Full When Trying to Pick Up
If your inventory is full when you try to pick up a sprinkler, the pickup will fail, and you will not be able to move the sprinkler. This can be frustrating, especially if you are trying to reorganize a large section of your farm.
Solution: Always check your inventory space before attempting to pick up sprinklers. Clear out unnecessary items or store excess materials in chests before starting your farm reorganization project.
Selecting the Wrong Object
Especially on mobile devices or when there are multiple objects close together, it is easy to accidentally select a crop or other object instead of the sprinkler. This can lead to unintended consequences like harvesting crops or interacting with the wrong item.
Solution: Take your time when selecting objects. On mobile, zoom in to get a better view of what you are selecting. On other platforms, make sure your cursor or character is properly positioned before interacting.
Losing Dropped Items
When using tools to break sprinklers, the items sometimes drop in inconvenient locations, such as in tall grass or near water. If you do not pick them up immediately, they may disappear or be difficult to find.
Solution: Always pick up dropped items immediately. If you must use tools to remove sprinklers, do so in an open area where items will be easy to see and collect.
Misunderstanding Platform Controls
Players switching between platforms or new players may not know the correct controls for picking up sprinklers. This can lead to frustration and wasted time.
Solution: Familiarize yourself with the controls for your specific platform before attempting to move sprinklers. Refer to the controls section above if you are unsure.

Does pressing Shift help pick up sprinklers faster?
On PC, holding Shift while right-clicking can help you place or pick up items more quickly, especially when working with multiple objects. This can be useful when you are moving several sprinklers at once. However, the basic method of right-clicking with an empty hand works perfectly fine for picking up individual sprinklers.
Can you pick up sprinklers that are surrounded by crops?
Picking up sprinklers that are surrounded by crops can be challenging but is still possible. You may need to harvest or cut down some of the surrounding crops first to create enough space to interact with the sprinkler. Using a scythe to clear crops around the sprinkler can make this process easier and faster.
Do sprinklers work in the greenhouse or underground?
Yes, sprinklers work in both the greenhouse and underground areas like the mines. They function the same way as they do on the surface farm, watering crops in their coverage area automatically. This makes them especially valuable for greenhouse farming, where you can create highly efficient layouts that maximize crop production year-round.
Can you pick up iridium sprinklers?
There is no such thing as an iridium sprinkler in Stardew Valley. The three main types of sprinklers are the basic sprinkler, quality sprinkler, and the optional pressure nozzle attachment. All of these can be picked up using the same methods described in this guide.
Will sprinklers water crops on other farms?
No, sprinklers only water crops within their coverage area on the farm where they are placed. They do not extend their effects to other farms or areas. Each farm must have its own sprinkler system to maintain crop hydration automatically.
Can you duplicate sprinklers using certain methods?
While there have been exploits in previous versions of the game that allowed players to duplicate items, the current version of Stardew Valley does not support legitimate ways to duplicate sprinklers. Any duplication methods that exist are considered bugs and may be patched by the developers.
Do sprinklers work during festivals or events?
Sprinklers do not function during festivals or events that cause time to skip. When you attend a festival, time jumps forward, and any watering that would have occurred during that period is skipped. However, sprinklers resume normal operation once you return to your farm after the event concludes.
