What Is a Hunter Sprinkler System?

A Hunter Sprinkler System is a comprehensive irrigation network designed to deliver water uniformly across lawns, gardens, landscapes, and athletic fields. The system consists of several core components working together: pop-up sprinkler heads, underground piping, a central controller, solenoid valves, and sometimes drip emitters for targeted watering. Hunter offers a wide range of products suited for residential, commercial, and agricultural use, making their systems one of the most versatile options on the market.

The popularity of Hunter systems stems from their engineering quality. Many Hunter sprinkler heads feature adjustable arc settings, rain sensors, and high-efficiency nozzles that reduce water waste. When you install a Hunter Sprinkler System correctly, you gain precise control over watering schedules, coverage patterns, and flow rates. This ensures that every plant receives the right amount of moisture without overwatering or creating runoff.

Planning and Designing Your Sprinkler Layout

Proper planning is arguably the most critical phase when learning how to install Hunter Sprinkler System. A poorly planned layout leads to uneven coverage, water waste, and unnecessary complications during installation.

Begin by measuring your property and creating a scaled map. Mark the locations of your house, driveways, walkways, garden beds, trees, and any areas that need irrigation. Next, determine the water pressure and flow rate available at your property’s water source. Most residential systems operate at 40 to 65 PSI, and you will need at least 10 to 15 gallons per minute for a typical yard. Use a pressure gauge and a bucket test to measure these values accurately.

With your water data in hand, decide on the placement of each sprinkler head. Consider the following design principles:

• Place heads so that their spray patterns overlap slightly at the edges for full coverage.
• Group plants with similar water needs into separate zones.
• Avoid placing sprinkler heads too close to hardscape surfaces where runoff will occur.
• Plan valve box locations near the areas they serve for easy access.
• Keep pipe runs as straight as possible to reduce friction loss and simplify installation.

Sketch the layout onto your map, noting pipe routes, head positions, and zone assignments. This blueprint will guide you throughout the installation process.

Step-by-Step: How to Install Hunter Sprinkler System

Now that you have a solid plan, follow these detailed steps to bring your Hunter Sprinkler System to life.

Step 1: Mark and Trench the Pipe Routes

Using your layout map, mark the trench lines on the ground with spray paint. Trenches for main supply lines should be dug 12 to 18 inches deep, while lateral lines to sprinkler heads typically require 8 to 12 inches of depth. Use a trenching shovel or rented trenching machine to dig clean, straight trenches. Set aside the excavated soil for backfilling later.

Step 2: Lay the Pipes

Begin by laying the main header pipe from the water source toward the first valve box. Use HDPE or PVC pipe rated for underground irrigation. Connect fittings as needed, securing joints with pipe cement or compression fittings depending on the pipe type. As you progress through each zone, branch off from the main line into lateral runs that terminate near each sprinkler head location. Install test caps at the end of each pipe run to allow pressure testing later.

Step 3: Install the Solenoid Valves

Place each Hunter solenoid valve inside a valve box at its designated zone location. Connect the inlet from the main or branch line to the valve, and run the outlet toward the sprinkler heads in that zone. Use Teflon tape on threaded connections to prevent leaks. Wire the solenoid leads according to the controller wiring diagram, typically using 18-gauge outdoor-rated wire.

Step 4: Install the Sprinkler Heads

Thread each Hunter sprinkler head onto the riser at the end of its lateral pipe run. Adjust the height so the top of the head sits approximately level with the surrounding ground. Set the arc and radius adjustments on each head according to your design plan. For rotor-style heads, confirm that the spray pattern rotates freely and that the radius screw is set to the desired distance.

Step 5: Wire and Connect the Controller

Run the zone wires from each valve back to the controller location. Strip the wire ends and attach them to the correct terminals on the Hunter controller, matching each wire to its corresponding zone. Connect the common wire to the common terminal and the power supply wires to the L and N terminals if your controller requires hardwiring, or install batteries for wireless models.

Step 6: Test the System

Turn on the water supply slowly and check every connection for leaks. Activate each zone from the controller and walk the entire yard, observing the spray pattern, coverage, and rotation of each head. Adjust any heads that are misaligned, blocked, or producing uneven coverage. Flush the system by opening the flush valves at the lowest points of each zone to clear out debris.

Step 7: Backfill and Finish

Once testing is complete and all adjustments are made, backfill the trenches carefully, avoiding damage to pipes and fittings. Lay landscape fabric over the pipe runs where applicable, and replace the topsoil and sod. Install controller covers and valve box lids, and mulch around planted areas as needed.

Setting Up the Hunter Controller

The controller is the brain of your Hunter Sprinkler System. Proper programming ensures efficient water use and healthy plant growth. Start by setting the current date and time, as all scheduling depends on accurate clock settings. Then configure each zone individually.

For each zone, determine the appropriate run time based on the type of sprinkler head, soil conditions, and plant water requirements. As a general guideline, most lawns need about one inch of water per week, divided into two or three watering sessions. Use the cycle-and-soak feature if your Hunter controller supports it, which applies water in shorter cycles with rest periods to allow absorption and reduce runoff.

Set the start times and days of the week for each zone. Many homeowners find it effective to water lawns during the early morning hours between 4 and 8 AM, when evaporation is lowest and wind is minimal. If your Hunter controller includes weather-based intelligence or connects to the Hunter Hydrawise app, enable these features to automatically adjust watering based on local weather data and evapotranspiration rates.

Installing a Hunter Sprinkler System for Different Yard Sizes

The approach to installing a Hunter Sprinkler System varies depending on the size and complexity of your property.

Small Yards and Patios

For smaller properties, a single-zone system with two to four pop-up heads may be sufficient. Use a compact Hunter controller and focus on precise head placement to cover the entire area without overspray onto sidewalks or driveways. Drip irrigation heads from Hunter are excellent for flower beds and container gardens in small spaces.

Medium Yards

Medium-sized lawns typically require two to four zones to accommodate different sun exposures, plant types, and slope conditions. A Hunter rotor system with MP Rotator nozzles works well for larger turf areas, while drip zones handle garden beds and shrubbery. Plan valve locations thoughtfully to keep wire runs manageable.

Large Yards and Commercial Properties

Large properties benefit from multi-zone systems with centralized valve manifolds and advanced Hunter controllers that support hundreds of stations. Consider using Hunter’s industrial-grade rotors for wide-area coverage and integrating rain sensors or weather stations to comply with water regulations and maximize efficiency.

Choosing the right irrigation brand is an important decision. The following table compares Hunter with two other popular brands across key factors.

Hunter stands out for its balance of advanced technology, durability, and water-saving features. While Rain Bird offers comparable quality and Orbit provides budget-friendly options, Hunter’s smart controller ecosystem and MP Rotator nozzle design give it an edge for homeowners committed to efficient irrigation.

Tips and Best Practices

Follow these practical recommendations to get the most from your Hunter Sprinkler System installation.

• Pressure-test before burying: Always run the system at full pressure with test caps in place before backfilling any trenches. Catching a leak after burial is costly and time-consuming.
• Use check valves: Install Hunter check valve fittings on sprinkler heads located at lower elevations than the controller to prevent low-head drainage, which wastes water and can damage plants.
• Mulch around heads: Mulching around sprinkler heads protects them from accidental damage by mowers and trimmers while keeping the soil cool.
• Label your wires: At the controller and valve box, label every wire with its zone number. Future maintenance becomes significantly easier when wiring is clearly identified.
• Install a master valve: A master shutoff valve allows you to isolate the entire irrigation system for maintenance without affecting household water pressure.
• Consider a backflow preventer: Even if your municipality does not require one, installing a backflow preventer protects your household water supply from contamination.
• Schedule seasonal audits: Review your watering schedule at least twice a year, adjusting for seasonal weather changes and plant growth stages.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Even experienced DIYers can encounter pitfalls during installation. Being aware of these common mistakes helps you avoid them entirely.

• Underestimating water pressure: Failing to measure your water pressure and flow rate before designing the system can result in poor performance. Too many heads on a single zone will reduce pressure and coverage.
• Trenching too shallow: Pipes placed too close to the surface are vulnerable to frost damage, shovel strikes, and root intrusion. Follow local frost depth guidelines for proper burial depth.
• Ignoring soil type: Clay soils absorb water slowly and are prone to runoff, while sandy soils drain quickly and need shorter, more frequent watering cycles. Adjust your system accordingly.
• Overlapping spray zones: Placing heads with overlapping coverage wastes water and can cause soggy areas. Carefully calculate radius and arc settings during the design phase.
• Neglecting slope considerations: Flat sprinkler head placement on sloped ground causes water to pool at the bottom. Use pressure-compensating sprinkler heads or check valves on hillsides.
• Skipping the flush: Not flushing the system after installation leaves construction debris inside pipes and heads, leading to clogs and uneven spray patterns.

Post-Installation Maintenance

Once your Hunter Sprinkler System is fully operational, ongoing maintenance keeps it running at peak performance. At the start of each growing season, inspect all heads for damage, clear any clogged nozzles with a small brush or compressed air, and verify that arc and radius settings remain accurate. Check valve boxes for standing water, which may indicate a leaking solenoid or pipe connection.

During winter, drain the system completely if you live in a freezing climate. Use compressed air to blow out remaining water from pipes and heads, or install automatic drain valves at low points. Inspect the controller batteries annually and replace them before they die to prevent scheduling disruptions. Periodically run each zone manually and walk the coverage area to catch any issues before they affect your landscape.
