How to Install Check Valve on Sprinkler? Prevent Low-Head Drainage

Introduction

Low-head drainage is a common problem in irrigation systems that can waste water, increase utility bills, and cause uneven watering across your lawn. When the system shuts off, water remaining in the lowest sprinkler heads drains out, leaving those zones dry while higher zones stay saturated. Installing a check valve on each affected sprinkler head prevents this backflow, keeping water in the lines until the next cycle begins. This guide walks you through everything you need to know about How to Install Check Valve on Sprinkler? from understanding the mechanics to completing a professional‑grade installation.

Understanding Low-Head Drainage

Low-head drainage occurs when gravity pulls water out of the lowest sprinkler heads after the irrigation controller closes the zone valve. The water exits through the nozzle, leaving the pipe empty. When the next cycle starts, the system must refill those lines, causing a delay in water delivery and uneven coverage. Over time, this cycle wastes thousands of gallons and can lead to dry spots, soil erosion, and increased wear on the pump. Recognizing the symptoms—such as soggy areas near the lowest heads and dry patches elsewhere—helps you decide where check valves are needed most.

What Is a Check Valve?

A check valve, also known as a non‑return valve, allows water to flow in only one direction. In a sprinkler system it sits between the lateral pipe and the sprinkler head. When the zone valve opens, water pushes the valve open and reaches the head. When the zone valve closes, the spring‑loaded or gravity‑actuated mechanism snaps shut, trapping water in the lateral line and preventing it from draining out of the head. This simple device eliminates low‑head drainage without affecting system pressure or flow rate.

Types of Check Valves for Sprinkler Systems

Several designs are available, each suited to different pipe sizes, pressure ranges, and installation preferences.

Swing Check Valve

A swing check uses a hinged disc that swings open with flow and closes by gravity when flow stops. It is robust, handles higher flow rates, and works well on larger diameter laterals (1‑inch and up). However, it requires a horizontal orientation and a bit more space.

Spring‑Loaded (Poppet) Check Valve

This compact valve uses a spring to hold a poppet against a seat. It can be installed in any orientation, making it ideal for tight sprinkler boxes. Spring tension determines the cracking pressure; most residential models crack at 0.5–1 psi, which is perfect for typical irrigation pressures.

Inline (Threaded) Check Valve

Threaded inline valves screw directly onto the male threads of the sprinkler head or a short nipple. They are the easiest to retrofit because they require no cutting of pipe. They come in both swing and spring‑loaded versions.

Push‑Fit (Compression) Check Valve

Push‑fit models use a compression ring that seals onto polyethylene or PVC pipe without threads. They are quick to install with a simple push‑on motion and are popular for new installations where pipe is being laid.

Tools and Materials Needed

Gather the following before you start to avoid interruptions:

• Check valves (one per low‑head sprinkler)
• Adjustable wrench or pipe wrench
• Pipe cutter or hacksaw (if cutting pipe)
• PVC primer and cement (for PVC laterals)
• Teflon tape (for threaded connections)
• Pipe reamer or deburring tool
• Bucket and towels (to catch residual water)
• Marker and measuring tape
• Safety glasses and gloves

Step-by-Step Installation Guide

Follow these steps for each sprinkler head that suffers from low‑head drainage. The process assumes a typical residential system with ¾‑inch or 1‑inch PVC laterals and threaded sprinkler heads.

1. Shut off the water supply. Turn off the main irrigation valve and relieve pressure by opening a downstream valve or running a manual cycle until flow stops.
2. Identify the low‑head zones. Walk the system while it runs and note which heads are the lowest in each zone. Mark them with a flag or tape.
3. Expose the connection. Dig carefully around the sprinkler head to reveal the lateral pipe and the head’s inlet. Remove enough soil to work comfortably.
4. Remove the existing sprinkler head. Use an adjustable wrench to unscrew the head from the lateral. If the head is glued (PVC), cut the pipe about 2 inches above the fitting with a pipe cutter, then deburr the cut end.
5. Prepare the pipe ends. Clean the cut ends with a rag. For threaded connections, wrap the male threads with 2–3 wraps of Teflon tape in the direction of the threads. For solvent‑weld PVC, apply primer to both the pipe and the valve socket, then coat with cement.
6. Install the check valve.
   • For threaded inline valves: screw the valve onto the lateral’s male threads, then screw the sprinkler head onto the valve’s outlet. Tighten hand‑tight plus one quarter turn with the wrench.
   • For solvent‑weld valves: push the valve onto the primed pipe, hold for 15 seconds, then attach the sprinkler head to the valve’s outlet using a short nipple if needed.
   • For push‑fit valves: simply push the valve onto the pipe until it seats fully, then attach the head.
7. Check orientation. Most spring‑loaded valves have an arrow indicating flow direction. Ensure the arrow points toward the sprinkler head. Swing checks must be installed horizontally with the hinge on top.
8. Backfill and secure. Replace soil around the valve and head, tamping gently to avoid shifting the fittings. Keep the valve accessible for future maintenance.
9. Restore water and test. Turn the main valve back on. Run the zone manually and observe each modified head. Water should rise immediately without a noticeable delay, and no water should leak from the valve body.
10. Adjust if necessary. If a head still drains, verify the valve’s cracking pressure matches your system pressure. Replace with a lower‑cracking‑pressure model if needed.

Testing the Installation

After installation, run each zone through a full cycle. Watch for three key indicators: (1) immediate pop‑up of the sprinkler head, (2) no water seeping from the valve body, and (3) consistent pressure across all heads in the zone. Use a pressure gauge on a test port if available; pressure should remain within 5 psi of the design pressure. If any head shows delayed rise, re‑check the valve orientation and ensure no debris is lodged in the seat.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

• Installing the valve backward. The flow arrow must point toward the sprinkler head; reversing it blocks water entirely.
• Using a valve with too high a cracking pressure. A valve that requires 5 psi to open will stay shut on low‑pressure residential systems.
• Over‑tightening threaded connections. This can crack PVC fittings or strip threads, causing leaks.
• Neglecting to deburr cut pipe. Burrs create turbulence and can prevent a proper seal on push‑fit or solvent‑weld joints.
• Skipping the pressure test. Without verification, a hidden leak can waste water for weeks before detection.
• Installing a swing check in a vertical run. Gravity will keep the disc open, defeating the purpose.

Tips and Best Practices

• Choose spring‑loaded valves for most residential retrofits; they tolerate any orientation and have low cracking pressures.
• Label each valve with a waterproof marker indicating the zone number for easy future service.
• Install a filter upstream of the zone valve if your water source carries sediment; debris can jam check valve seats.
• Schedule an annual inspection before the irrigation season: open each valve box, cycle the zone, and confirm no drainage.
• Keep spare valves of the same model on hand for quick replacements.
• When designing a new system, specify check valves on all heads below the highest elevation in each zone to eliminate low‑head drainage from the start.

Maintenance and Troubleshooting

Check valves are low‑maintenance but not maintenance‑free. Once a year, perform the following:

• Open each valve box and visually inspect for cracks, corrosion, or mineral buildup.
• Cycle the zone and listen for unusual hissing that indicates a leaky seat.
• If a valve sticks open, remove it and soak in vinegar for 30 minutes to dissolve calcium deposits, then rinse and reinstall.
• Replace any valve that shows permanent deformation of the disc or spring fatigue.
• Keep a log of installation dates and replacement intervals; most residential check valves last 5–7 years.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a check valve on every sprinkler head?

Only heads that are the lowest in their zone require a check valve. Heads at higher elevations will not drain because gravity keeps water in the lateral line.

Can I install a check valve on a drip irrigation line?

Yes, but use a low‑cracking‑pressure spring‑loaded valve designed for drip pressures (typically 0.2–0.5 psi). Standard sprinkler check valves may not open at drip system pressures.

Will a check valve reduce my system pressure?

A properly sized check valve adds negligible pressure loss—usually less than 0.5 psi. Choose a valve with a cracking pressure well below your operating pressure to avoid any noticeable drop.

How do I know which cracking pressure to select?

Measure your zone’s static pressure with a gauge. Select a valve that cracks at 10–20 % of that pressure. For a 40 psi system, a 0.5–1 psi cracking pressure is ideal.

Can I use a check valve with a rotary (gear‑driven) sprinkler head?

Absolutely. The valve installs upstream of the head regardless of head type. Ensure the valve’s flow rating meets the head’s GPM requirement.

What if my system uses a pump start relay and the pump cycles frequently?

Frequent pump cycling can cause water hammer. Install a water hammer arrestor upstream of the check valve, and verify the valve’s spring can handle the transient pressures.

Conclusion

Preventing low‑head drainage is one of the most cost‑effective upgrades you can make to an irrigation system. By understanding the problem, selecting the right check valve, and following a careful installation process, you eliminate wasted water, improve coverage uniformity, and extend the life of your pump and piping. Remember to test each zone after installation, avoid common orientation errors, and schedule annual inspections. With these steps, How to Install Check Valve on Sprinkler? becomes a straightforward project that pays dividends every watering season.
