Understanding Your Sprinkler System

A typical automatic sprinkler system consists of a controller (timer), a series of zone valves, underground piping, and sprinkler heads or rotors that distribute water. The controller sends electrical signals to each valve, opening it for a programmed duration. Water then travels through the pipe network to the heads, which are designed for specific spray patterns, radii, and flow rates. Knowing the layout of zones, the type of heads installed, and the location of the main shut‑off valve is essential before you begin any inspection. Most residential systems use either spray heads for small areas or rotor heads for larger lawns, and many newer installations incorporate smart controllers that adjust run times based on weather data.

Tools and Materials Needed

Gather the following items before starting your inspection to avoid interruptions:

• Adjustable wrench or valve key for valve boxes
• Screwdriver set (flat‑head and Phillips)
• Pressure gauge with a quick‑connect fitting
• Bucket or flow‑meter for measuring output
• Garden hose with a spray nozzle for flushing
• Replacement nozzles, O‑rings, and solenoid diaphragms
• Waterproof marker and notebook or digital device for notes
• Safety gloves and eye protection

Having these tools on hand lets you test pressure, clean or replace heads, and tighten connections without multiple trips to the hardware store.

Seasonal Inspection Overview

Plan inspections at least twice a year: once in early spring before the first watering cycle and again in late fall before winterization. In regions with harsh winters, a mid‑summer check is also wise to catch heat‑related wear. Each season focuses on different components: spring checks emphasize controller programming, valve operation, and head alignment; summer checks monitor pressure consistency and nozzle wear; fall checks verify that all zones shut off completely and that drain valves function. Keeping a written log of findings and repairs creates a valuable reference for future maintenance and for any professional service calls.

Step-by-Step Guide to Check Sprinkler System

Follow this ordered process to perform a thorough system check. Each step builds on the previous one, ensuring no component is overlooked.

1. Turn off the main water supply and relieve pressure by opening a manual drain valve or running a zone briefly. This prevents accidental spraying while you work.
2. Inspect the controller for error codes, battery health, and correct date/time settings. Update the schedule if seasonal watering needs have changed.
3. Open each valve box and visually examine the solenoid, diaphragm, and wiring for corrosion, cracks, or loose connections.
4. Activate each zone manually from the controller. Observe the spray pattern, distance, and any irregularities such as misting, dry spots, or overspray onto hardscapes.
5. Measure pressure at the first head of each zone using a pressure gauge. Record the reading and compare it to the manufacturer’s recommended range (typically 30‑50 psi for spray heads, 40‑60 psi for rotors).
6. Check flow rate by placing a bucket under a head for a timed interval (e.g., 1 minute). Calculate gallons per minute and verify it matches the design specifications.
7. Inspect each sprinkler head for clogged nozzles, broken risers, or misaligned arcs. Clean or replace nozzles as needed.
8. Look for leaks along visible pipe runs, at valve boxes, and around fittings. Use a soap solution on joints to reveal small air bubbles indicating a leak.
9. Adjust arc and radius on adjustable heads to eliminate overspray and ensure head‑to‑head coverage without gaps.
10. Re‑pressurize the system slowly, watching for new leaks as pressure builds. Close the main drain valve once the system holds pressure.
11. Run a full automatic cycle and confirm each zone starts and stops on schedule. Note any zones that fail to activate or run longer than programmed.
12. Document findings in your maintenance log, including pressure readings, replaced parts, and any zones requiring follow‑up.

Inspecting Valves and Solenoids

Valves are the heart of each irrigation zone. Begin by removing the valve box lid and cleaning any debris that could interfere with operation. Examine the solenoid coil for signs of overheating, such as discoloration or a burnt smell. Test the solenoid’s electrical continuity with a multimeter; a reading outside the manufacturer’s specification indicates a faulty coil. Next, inspect the diaphragm for tears, warping, or mineral buildup. A damaged diaphragm will cause the valve to weep or fail to close completely, leading to water waste and pressure loss. Replace the diaphragm and O‑rings as a set to ensure a proper seal. Finally, verify that the manual bleed lever operates smoothly; a stuck lever can prevent manual zone activation during troubleshooting.

Examining Sprinkler Heads and Nozzles

Sprinkler heads endure the most exposure to soil, debris, and foot traffic. Start by pulling each head up to its fully extended position. Rotate the head to confirm the arc adjustment moves freely. Remove the nozzle using a nozzle wrench or by hand, then rinse it under running water to clear sand, algae, or mineral deposits. Inspect the nozzle orifice for erosion; a worn orifice increases flow and reduces pattern uniformity. Check the riser for cracks or bending, which can cause the head to sit too low or too high, affecting coverage. Replace any head that shows significant wear, and consider upgrading to pressure‑regulated heads if your system experiences frequent pressure spikes.

Testing Water Pressure and Flow

Accurate pressure and flow data are critical for diagnosing performance problems. Attach a pressure gauge to a test port on the main line or to a dedicated pressure‑test fitting on a zone valve. Record static pressure (system off) and dynamic pressure (zone running). Dynamic pressure should fall within the design range for the installed heads. For flow testing, use a calibrated bucket: place it under a single head, run the zone for exactly one minute, then measure the volume. Convert to gallons per minute (GPM) and compare to the zone’s design GPM. Significant deviations indicate either a blockage, a leak, or an incorrectly sized pump. If pressure is consistently high, install a pressure‑regulating valve to protect heads and reduce misting.

Checking for Leaks and Pipe Damage

Leaks waste water and can undermine soil stability. After pressurizing the system, walk the entire property looking for soggy spots, unusually green patches, or water bubbling at the surface. Pay special attention to valve boxes, where fittings are concentrated. Apply a mixture of dish soap and water to each joint; bubbles will form at even the smallest leak. For underground sections, a listening device or acoustic leak detector can pinpoint hidden breaks without excavation. If a leak is found, expose the pipe carefully, cut out the damaged section, and install a repair coupling with appropriate PVC primer and cement. Always pressure‑test the repair before backfilling.

Adjusting Coverage and Arc Settings

Proper head‑to‑head coverage eliminates dry spots and reduces runoff. For spray heads, set the arc to match the landscape shape: 90°, 180°, or 360° as needed. Rotor heads typically offer a continuous arc adjustment from 40° to 360°. Use the adjustment screw or collar while the zone is running to see the real‑time pattern. Aim for a slight overlap (about 10‑15 % of the radius) between adjacent heads. If overspray hits sidewalks, driveways, or buildings, reduce the radius or adjust the arc accordingly. Document the final settings for each head in your maintenance log to simplify future seasonal adjustments.

Winterization and Spring Start‑Up

In climates where freezing occurs, winterizing prevents pipe bursts and valve damage. Shut off the main water supply, then open all manual drain valves and low‑point drains. Use an air compressor (typically 50‑80 psi) to blow out each zone sequentially, starting with the zone farthest from the compressor. Continue until only a fine mist exits the heads. Close all drains and leave the controller in the “off” position. In spring, reverse the process: close drains, slowly open the main supply, and run each zone manually to purge air. Verify that all heads pop up correctly and that the controller’s schedule matches current weather conditions.

Tips and Best Practices

• Schedule inspections on the same weekend each season to build a habit.
• Keep a spare set of nozzles and diaphragms in your tool kit for quick replacements.
• Use a pressure regulator if municipal pressure exceeds 80 psi to protect heads.
• Label each valve box with its zone number using waterproof tags.
• Calibrate your flow meter annually to maintain accurate GPM readings.
• Integrate a rain sensor or soil moisture sensor to pause irrigation during wet periods.
• Document all changes with photos; visual records simplify troubleshooting later.
• Train anyone who may operate the system on basic manual zone activation.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Many system issues stem from preventable errors. Over‑tightening PVC fittings can crack the pipe, leading to hidden leaks. Ignoring the controller’s battery backup results in lost schedules after power outages. Skipping the pressure test after a repair often leaves a small leak undetected until it causes soil erosion. Using the wrong nozzle size for a head’s design pressure creates misting or poor coverage. Failing to winterize in freezing climates is the single most expensive mistake, frequently resulting in burst main lines. Finally, neglecting to update the watering schedule for seasonal plant needs wastes water and stresses turf. Awareness of these pitfalls helps you maintain a reliable, efficient system year after year.
