What Are Sprinklers in Stardew Valley?
Sprinklers are farm equipment items that automatically water crops in adjacent tiles each morning. Once placed, they eliminate the need to manually carry a watering can across your fields. The game features three tiers of sprinklers, each covering more tiles than the last. The Basic Sprinkler waters four surrounding tiles, the Quality Sprinkler waters eight tiles in a larger radius, and the Iridium Sprinkler waters a massive twenty-four tile area.
Understanding how each tier works is the first step toward building a truly automated farm. When players ask how to get upgraded sprinkler Stardew Valley, they are usually looking for the crafting recipes, drop locations, or purchase options for the Quality and Iridium tiers specifically. These upgraded versions are game-changers for any serious farmer.
Types of Sprinklers
Basic Sprinkler
The Basic Sprinkler is the first type you can craft. It waters the four tiles directly adjacent to it (up, down, left, right) but not the diagonal tiles. You can craft it once you reach Farming Level 2. The recipe requires 1 Copper Bar and 1 Iron Bar, both of which can be smelted at the Furnace. This sprinkler is great for early-game crop setups, but it becomes inefficient once you expand your farm.
Quality Sprinkler
The Quality Sprinkler waters eight surrounding tiles, including diagonals. This means it covers a 3-by-3 area centered on itself, minus the tile it occupies. You unlock the recipe at Farming Level 6. Crafting it requires 1 Iron Bar, 1 Gold Bar, and 1 Refined Quartz. This is the tier most players refer to when they talk about upgraded sprinklers, and it dramatically improves farm efficiency compared to the Basic version.
Iridium Sprinkler
The Iridium Sprinkler is the ultimate automation tool in Stardew Valley. It waters all twenty-four surrounding tiles in a 5-by-5 area. You need Farming Level 9 to unlock the recipe. The crafting requirements are 1 Gold Bar, 1 Iridium Bar, and 1 Battery Pack. This sprinkler can water an entire large crop field with just a few units, making it essential for late-game farms and massive crop operations.
How to Get Upgraded Sprinkler Stardew Valley
Now let us get into the specifics of how to get upgraded sprinkler Stardew Valley. There are three main methods for obtaining Quality and Iridium sprinklers: crafting them yourself, finding them as drops or treasure, and purchasing them from vendors. Each method has its advantages depending on your current resources and game progress.
Crafting the Quality Sprinkler
To craft a Quality Sprinkler, open your crafting menu once you have reached Farming Level 6. You will need the following materials:
- 1 Iron Bar — Smelt 2 Iron Ore at the Furnace.
- 1 Gold Bar — Smelt 2 Gold Ore at the Furnace.
- 1 Refined Quartz — Charge a Quartz at the Mystic Stone in the Mines, or occasionally find Refined Quartz in treasure chests.
Once you have these materials, select the Quality Sprinkler from the Farming category in your crafting menu. You can craft them in bulk once you have gathered enough resources. It is wise to stock up on Gold Bars and Refined Quartz during your early Mines runs so you can craft Quality Sprinklers as soon as you hit level 6.
Crafting the Iridium Sprinkler
The Iridium Sprinkler requires more advanced materials and a higher Farming Level. Here is what you need:
- 1 Gold Bar — Smelt 2 Gold Ore at the Furnace.
- 1 Iridium Bar — Smelt 2 Iridium Ore at the Furnace. Iridium Ore is found in the deeper levels of the Mines (levels 40–79) and in the Skull Cavern.
- 1 Battery Pack — Dropped by Thunderheads in the Mines (levels 60–79) or purchased from the Traveling Cart.
Crafting Iridium Sprinklers is a significant investment, but the payoff is enormous. A single Iridium Sprinkler replaces the coverage of six Quality Sprinklers, saving you both materials and time when designing your farm layout.
Other Methods to Obtain Sprinklers
Beyond crafting, there are a few alternative ways to get upgraded sprinklers:
- Traveling Cart — The Traveling Cart, which appears in the Cindersap Forest on Fridays and Sundays, sometimes sells Quality and Iridium Sprinklers. Prices vary, so check regularly.
- Treasure Chests — Quality Sprinklers can occasionally be found in treasure chests in the Mines and Skull Cavern.
- Monster Drops — There is a very small chance that certain monsters in the Mines drop a Quality Sprinkler.
- Gifts and Rewards — Occasionally, you may receive sprinklers as gifts from villagers or through community center bundles.

Best Farming Strategies with Upgraded Sprinklers
Once you understand how to get upgraded sprinkler Stardew Valley materials, the next step is planning your farm layout. The way you place sprinklers has a huge impact on how many crops you can sustain with minimal manual effort.
Quality Sprinkler Layout: Quality Sprinklers cover a 3-by-3 area. A common strategy is to place them in a grid pattern with one tile of spacing between each sprinkler. This allows them to overlap slightly and cover large crop fields efficiently. A standard 8-by-8 crop plot can be fully watered with just four Quality Sprinklers placed strategically.
Iridium Sprinkler Layout: Because Iridium Sprinklers cover a 5-by-5 area, you need far fewer of them. Placing them with two tiles of spacing between each unit ensures maximum coverage without waste. A large 15-by-15 farm area can be fully automated with fewer than ten Iridium Sprinklers.
Mixed Layouts: Many players use a combination of sprinkler tiers. Use Quality Sprinklers for medium crop patches near your farmhouse and reserve Iridium Sprinklers for the largest fields or for crops that take the longest to mature, like Ancient Fruit or Starfruit.
Tips and Best Practices
- Prioritize Refined Quartz Early: Charge Quartz at the Mystic Stone every time you visit the Mines. Refined Quartz is required for Quality Sprinklers and is not easy to come by otherwise.
- Farm Iridium Ore Efficiently: Focus on the Mines levels 40 to 79 for the best Iridium Ore drop rates. The Skull Cavern offers even better rewards but requires careful preparation with food buffs and inventory space.
- Battery Packs from Thunderheads: Thunderheads appear on Mine levels 60 through 79. They are relatively common and drop Battery Packs regularly. Run these floors specifically when you need Battery Packs for Iridium Sprinklers.
- Use the Sprinkler Overlay: When you hold a sprinkler in your hand, the game shows a green overlay indicating which tiles will be watered. Use this tool to plan your exact placement before committing.
- Do Not Place Sprinklers on Paths: Sprinklers cannot be placed on paths, fences, or most decorative items. Clear the area first and then place them directly on soil or grass.
- Automate Before Expanding: Before buying new land or planting large crop fields, invest in enough upgraded sprinklers to cover the area. It is much easier to set up automation before crops are already in the ground.
- Consider Kegs and Preserves: Once your farm is automated with upgraded sprinklers, use the freed-up time to set up Kegs and Preserves for artisan goods, which generate significant income.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Even experienced players sometimes make avoidable mistakes when setting up sprinklers. Here are the most common pitfalls and how to solve them.
Not Planning Before Crafting: Many players craft Quality Sprinklers without thinking about placement. Always plan your grid layout first so you know exactly how many sprinklers you need. Wasting materials on unnecessary sprinklers slows down your farm progress.
Ignoring the Diagonal Coverage Difference: Basic Sprinklers do not water diagonal tiles, but Quality Sprinklers do. This distinction matters when spacing your units. If you try to use a Basic Sprinkler grid pattern for Quality Sprinklers, you will have gaps or overlaps that reduce efficiency.
Hoarding Iridium Bars: Some players save Iridium Bars for the Boots of the Nimble or the Sword instead of sprinklers. While those items have value, Iridium Sprinklers provide a consistent daily return on investment by automating your entire crop output.
Forgetting About Seasonal Crops: Sprinklers work with all seasonal crops, but make sure your sprinkler grid covers the correct planting area for each season. Crop plots often shift depending on what you are growing, so adjust your sprinkler positions accordingly.
Placing Sprinklers Too Close Together: Overlapping sprinkler coverage wastes resources. While there is no harm in extra overlap, spacing them correctly ensures you can use fewer units to cover the same area, saving precious Iridium Bars and Battery Packs for other projects.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where Can I Get Quality Sprinklers Without Crafting?
If you do not want to craft Quality Sprinklers, you can find them in treasure chests inside the Mines and occasionally in the Skull Cavern. The Traveling Cart also sells them on Fridays and Sundays. Additionally, some community center bundle rewards include Quality Sprinklers, so check the Junimo bundle for a free one.
Can I Find Iridium Sprinklers as Drops?
Iridium Sprinklers are not commonly dropped by monsters. The most reliable methods are crafting them yourself or purchasing them from the Traveling Cart. Crafting is generally the best approach because you can control the material investment and produce them in bulk once you have a steady supply of Iridium Bars and Battery Packs.
How Many Iridium Sprinklers Do I Need for a Full Farm?
A standard large farm of 36 by 36 tiles can be fully watered with approximately 14 to 16 Iridium Sprinklers, depending on your exact placement and spacing strategy. If you leave room for paths and decorative elements, you may need slightly more. Planning your layout on paper or using a farm planner tool can help you determine the exact number you need.
Is There a Way to Get Iridium Bars Without the Mines?
Yes. You can obtain Iridium Ore from the Skull Cavern, which is accessible after completing the Desert Quarry quest. The Skull Cavern offers much richer Iridium deposits than the regular Mines. You can also purchase Iridium Ore from the Traveling Cart on rare occasions, though prices are steep. Another option is trading with travelers who visit your farm through the Special Orders system.
Do Sprinklers Work With the Water Tank System?
Sprinklers work independently of the Water Tank system. The Water Tank is used for filling watering cans at a Cast Iron Fountain, while sprinklers automatically water crops each morning without any additional water source. You do not need to connect sprinklers to a water tank or any other infrastructure.
Conclusion
Learning how to get upgraded sprinkler Stardew Valley is one of the most impactful steps you can take to transform your farm from a manual chore into an efficient, automated operation.
