Understanding the Rain Bird 32SA Sprinkler Head

The 32SA belongs to Rain Bird’s “SA” series, which features a sealed, gear‑driven mechanism that resists debris and provides consistent rotation. It offers a 0°–360° adjustable arc and a radius range of 15 to 30 feet, depending on nozzle selection and water pressure. The head’s top‑mounted adjustment screws are clearly labeled: one for arc (often marked “ARC”) and one for radius (marked “RAD”). Knowing these components before you start prevents accidental over‑tightening or damage to the internal gear train.

Because the 32SA uses a pressure‑compensating nozzle, the flow rate remains relatively stable across the pressure range of 30–70 psi. This means that once you set the arc and radius, the head will deliver a predictable precipitation rate, which is essential for matching the irrigation schedule to your soil type and plant water requirements.

Tools and Materials Needed

Before you begin, gather the following items to make the adjustment smooth and safe:

• Adjustable wrench or 7/16‑inch socket (for the riser nut)
• Flat‑head screwdriver (for the arc and radius screws)
• Pressure gauge (optional, but helpful to verify system pressure)
• Bucket or catch can (to measure precipitation rate)
• Gloves and safety glasses
• Manufacturer’s installation manual (for reference)

Having these tools on hand eliminates trips back to the garage and reduces the chance of stripping the adjustment screws.

Safety Precautions

Irrigation systems operate under pressure, and even a modest 30 psi can cause a sudden spray that may injure eyes or cause slips. Follow these precautions:

• Turn off the main water supply to the zone before removing or adjusting any head.
• Relieve residual pressure by opening a downstream valve or running the zone briefly after shut‑off.
• Wear safety glasses to protect against debris or unexpected spray.
• Use gloves to improve grip on the riser nut and to protect hands from sharp edges.
• Never force an adjustment screw; if it resists, apply penetrating oil and wait a few minutes.

Step-by-Step Adjustment Guide

The following ordered list covers the complete procedure for adjusting a Rain Bird 32SA head. Perform each step in sequence for the best results.

1. Shut off the zone. Close the zone valve at the controller or the main shut‑off valve.
2. Relieve pressure. Open a manual drain or run the zone for a few seconds after shut‑off to release trapped water.
3. Remove the sprinkler head. Using the wrench, loosen the riser nut and lift the head off the riser. Set it on a clean surface.
4. Inspect the nozzle. Verify that the correct nozzle is installed for your desired radius. Replace if worn or clogged.
5. Set the arc. Locate the arc adjustment screw (marked “ARC”). Turn clockwise to decrease the arc, counter‑clockwise to increase. Each click typically changes the arc by 10°.
6. Set the radius. Locate the radius adjustment screw (marked “RAD”). Turn clockwise to reduce the throw distance, counter‑clockwise to increase. Adjust in small increments.
7. Re‑install the head. Place the head back on the riser, hand‑tighten the riser nut, then give it a final snug turn with the wrench.
8. Turn the water back on. Open the zone valve and observe the head’s rotation and spray pattern.
9. Fine‑tune. If coverage is uneven, repeat steps 5–7, making minor adjustments until the pattern matches your design.
10. Record settings. Note the final arc and radius positions for future reference or seasonal changes.

Adjusting the Arc

The arc determines how many degrees the sprinkler rotates. A full‑circle setting (360°) is ideal for central lawn areas, while a partial arc (e.g., 90°) suits corners or edges. To adjust, insert the flat‑head screwdriver into the ARC screw and turn. Each audible click corresponds to roughly 10° of rotation. For precise work, count clicks from a known reference point, such as the current position of the nozzle relative to a fixed landmark. Remember that the arc adjustment does not affect the radius; it only changes the sweep angle.

When setting a partial arc, ensure the start and stop points align with the boundaries of the irrigated zone. Misaligned arcs create dry spots or overspray onto hardscapes. After each adjustment, run the zone briefly to verify the new arc before moving on to radius changes.

Adjusting the Radius

The radius screw controls the distance the water throws. Turning the RAD screw clockwise shortens the throw, while turning counter‑clockwise lengthens it. The 32SA’s pressure‑compensating nozzle means the radius changes are relatively linear with screw rotation, but water pressure still plays a role. If your system runs at the high end of the pressure range (60–70 psi), you may need to reduce the radius more than at 30 psi to avoid overshoot.

Make radius adjustments in quarter‑turn increments, then test. Use a catch can placed at the expected edge of coverage to measure the actual throw distance. This empirical method is more reliable than relying solely on the screw position, especially when pressure fluctuates throughout the day.

Fine‑Tuning the Spray Pattern

After setting arc and radius, the spray pattern may still show minor irregularities such as streaking or uneven droplet size. These issues often stem from nozzle wear, debris, or slight misalignment of the head on the riser. To fine‑tune:

• Remove the head again and inspect the nozzle for mineral buildup; soak in vinegar if needed.
• Check that the head sits level on the riser; a tilted head skews the pattern.
• Rotate the head manually to ensure the gear train moves freely without binding.
• Re‑install and run the zone, observing the pattern from multiple angles.

Small adjustments to the arc or radius after cleaning can eliminate the remaining irregularities, delivering a uniform precipitation rate across the zone.

Testing and Verifying Coverage

Proper coverage verification prevents dry spots and water waste. The most common method is the catch‑can test:

1. Place several identical catch cans (e.g., tuna cans) in a grid across the irrigated area.
2. Run the zone for a set time (typically 15 minutes).
3. Measure the water depth in each can with a ruler.
4. Calculate the average depth and compare the highest and lowest readings.
5. Acceptable uniformity is generally a coefficient of uniformity (CU) above 80 %.

If the CU is low, adjust the problematic heads using the steps above, then retest. Document the final CU for future system audits.

Tips and Best Practices

• Adjust during low‑wind conditions. Wind distorts the spray pattern and makes visual assessment unreliable.
• Use a pressure gauge. Knowing the exact zone pressure helps you select the correct nozzle and radius setting.
• Mark the adjustment screws. A small dab of paint on the screw head lets you see the original position if you need to revert.
• Schedule seasonal checks. Spring and fall are ideal times to verify arc and radius after temperature‑induced pressure changes.
• Keep a log. Record each head’s final settings, nozzle type, and CU results for future troubleshooting.

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Many users encounter the same pitfalls when adjusting a 32SA head. Awareness of these mistakes saves time and water.

• Over‑tightening the riser nut. This can crack the head’s base or strip the threads. Tighten only until snug, then give a final quarter turn.
• Ignoring system pressure. Adjusting radius without verifying pressure leads to overspray or insufficient reach. Always measure pressure first.
• Setting the arc too wide for the zone. A 360° arc in a corner wastes water on sidewalks. Match the arc to the actual irrigated shape.
• Neglecting nozzle wear. A worn nozzle changes flow and pattern even if arc and radius are correct. Replace nozzles annually or when flow drops.
• Skipping the catch‑can test. Visual inspection alone cannot quantify uniformity. Perform the test after every major adjustment.

Maintenance After Adjustment

Once the heads are dialed in, ongoing maintenance ensures they stay accurate. Follow this simple schedule:

• Monthly: Visually inspect each head for clogs, leaks, or physical damage.
• Quarterly: Run a catch‑can test on a representative zone to confirm CU remains above 80 %.
• Annually: Remove each head, clean the nozzle, lubricate the gear drive with silicone spray, and verify arc and radius settings against your log.
• After major weather events: Freeze‑thaw cycles can shift risers; re‑check alignment and adjust if necessary.

Consistent maintenance extends the life of the 32SA and keeps your irrigation system operating at peak efficiency.

Frequently Asked Questions

What tools do I need to adjust a Rain Bird 32SA head?

You need an adjustable wrench or 7/16‑inch socket for the riser nut, a flat‑head screwdriver for the arc and radius screws, and optionally a pressure gauge and catch cans for testing.

How do I know if my arc is set correctly?

Run the zone and watch the head rotate. The spray should start and stop exactly at the edges of the area you want to water. If it overshoots, reduce the arc; if it leaves a gap, increase it.

Can I adjust the head while the system is running?

It is not recommended. Adjusting under pressure can cause the head to spin unexpectedly, leading to injury or inaccurate settings. Always shut off the zone and relieve pressure first.

Why is my sprinkler head not rotating?

Common causes include a clogged nozzle, debris in the gear drive, insufficient pressure (below 30 psi), or a stripped gear. Clean the nozzle, check pressure, and inspect the gear train for damage.

How often should I recheck the adjustments?

At minimum, perform a catch‑can test quarterly and a full inspection annually. Recheck after any significant pressure change, landscaping modification, or freeze‑thaw cycle.
