What Is a Sprinkler Backflow Preventer?

A backflow preventer is a mechanical device installed in your sprinkler system’s main water line that prevents contaminated water from flowing backward into your home’s clean water supply. It acts as a one-way gate, allowing water to flow toward the sprinkler heads while blocking any reverse flow that could carry fertilizers, pesticides, soil, or other pollutants back into your drinking water.

These devices are especially important in irrigation systems because sprinkler heads are in direct contact with the ground, where chemical treatments and debris are common. Without a functioning backflow preventer, a drop in municipal water pressure or a sudden surge in system pressure could force dirty water back through the pipes and into your household plumbing.

Most backflow preventers contain internal check valves, pressure-reducing components, and sometimes relief valves. These parts work together to maintain a consistent flow direction and seal off reverse movement. Because they contain moving parts and hold standing water, they require periodic draining for maintenance, winterization, and repair work.

Key Internal Components

Understanding the internal structure of a backflow preventer helps you drain it correctly without causing damage. The main components typically include:

• Check valves that allow flow in one direction only.
• Pressure vessels or chambers that regulate water pressure.
• Relief ports that release excess pressure or water during draining.
• Spring mechanisms that keep valves closed when no pressure is applied.

Each of these components must be properly depressurized and drained to ensure safe maintenance.

Why Drain the Backflow Preventer?

There are several compelling reasons why you might need to drain water from a sprinkler backflow preventer. Each scenario requires careful execution to protect both the device and your water system.

Winterization

In colder climates, leaving water inside a backflow preventer during freezing temperatures can cause the device to crack or burst. Ice expands, and even a small amount trapped in a chamber can generate enough pressure to damage internal seals, springs, and valve seats. Draining the backflow preventer before winter is one of the most effective ways to protect your irrigation system from freeze damage.

Repairs and Replacements

If you are replacing a valve, fixing a leak, or installing a new backflow preventer, you must first remove all water from the existing unit. Draining allows you to work safely, prevents water from spilling onto electrical components, and ensures a clean workspace for installation.

Pressure Regulation and Testing

Some maintenance procedures, such as pressure testing or calibrating sensors, require the backflow preventer to be completely empty. Residual water can interfere with accurate readings, damage sensitive components, or create unsafe working conditions.

Contamination Prevention

Standing water inside a backflow preventer can become a breeding ground for bacteria, algae, or sediment buildup. Regular draining helps keep the system clean and reduces the risk of contamination when the system is restarted.

Types of Backflow Preventers in Sprinkler Systems

Not all backflow preventers are the same. The type you have determines the specific draining procedure, the location of the isolate valve, and the tools you will need. Here are the most common types found in residential and light commercial sprinkler systems.

Atmospheric Vacuum Breaker (AVB)

An AVB is a simple, single-chamber device that uses atmospheric pressure to prevent backflow. It relies on a check valve that seals when pressure drops. Draining an AVB typically involves opening a drain port or removing the bonnet assembly.

Pressure Vacuum Breaker (PVB)

A PVB includes a pressurized chamber and a relief valve. It is more complex than an AVB and requires careful depressurization before draining. Many PVBs have a dedicated drain valve that must be opened slowly to avoid sudden pressure release.

Double Check Valve Assembly (DCVA)

A DCVA contains two independent check valves in series, providing redundant protection. Draining a DCVA usually involves isolating both inlet and outlet sides, then opening drain cocks located at the lowest points of each chamber.

Reduced Pressure Principle Assembly (RPZ)

An RPZ is the most robust and complex type, featuring two check valves and a relief chamber between them. Draining an RPZ is the most involved process and typically requires shutting off the main supply, isolating both sides, and opening multiple drain points in a specific sequence.

Tools and Safety Gear Needed

Before you begin draining a sprinkler backflow preventer, gather the necessary tools and safety equipment. Having everything ready will make the process smoother and reduce the risk of accidents.

Required Tools

• Adjustable wrench or channel locks for loosening nuts and fittings.
• Screwdrivers (flathead and Phillips) for removing covers and access panels.
• Towels or rags to wipe up spills and dry components.
• A bucket or container to catch draining water.
• Teflon tape or pipe dope for resealing threaded connections.
• A pressure gauge (if your system uses one) to verify pressure levels.

Safety Equipment

• Eye protection to guard against splashing water or debris.
• Gloves to protect your hands from sharp edges and cold water.
• Waterproof clothing if you are working in wet conditions.
• Non-slip shoes to prevent falls on wet surfaces.

How to Identify the Isolate Valve

The isolate valve, also known as a shut-off valve, is the key component that allows you to safely drain a backflow preventer. It controls the flow of water into and out of the device, and without properly identifying and operating it, you cannot drain the system safely.

Location of Isolate Valves

Isolate valves are typically located on both the inlet and outlet sides of the backflow preventer. In most residential systems, you will find:

• Inlet shut-off valve closest to the main water supply line.
• Outlet shut-off valve leading to the sprinkler zone or distribution piping.
• Drain valves built into the backflow preventer body or located nearby.

On some systems, the isolate valves are ball valves with lever handles, while others use gate valves or globe valves with round wheels. Look for clearly labeled valves or follow the pipe routing to trace the water path.

How to Recognize an Isolate Valve

Isolate valves are distinguishable by their position in the piping system and their function. Here are signs you have found an isolate valve: (See Also:How Deep For Sprinkler System)

• It is installed directly before or after the backflow preventer.
• It has a handle or wheel that can be turned to stop water flow.
• When turned fully clockwise (righty-tighty), it stops the flow of water.
• It is typically larger than standard zone control valves.

If you are unsure which valve controls the backflow preventer, turn off the main water supply to the irrigation system and test each valve individually to determine its function.

Types of Isolate Valves

Step-by-Step Guide to Draining

Now that you understand the components and have gathered your tools, it is time to follow a systematic approach to draining your sprinkler backflow preventer. These steps apply to most standard residential systems. Always consult your device’s manufacturer manual for model-specific instructions.

Step 1: Shut Off the Main Water Supply

Locate the main water supply valve for your irrigation system. This is usually near your water meter or where the irrigation line branches off from your household water supply. Turn the valve clockwise (righty-tighty) until it stops. If you have a gate valve, turn the wheel until resistance is felt. For ball valves, turn the lever 90 degrees until it is perpendicular to the pipe.

After shutting off the main supply, open a downstream faucet or sprinkler zone to relieve residual pressure in the lines. This prevents sudden pressure release when you begin working on the backflow preventer.

Step 2: Locate and Operate the Isolate Valves

Find the isolate valves on both the inlet and outlet sides of the backflow preventer. These are typically ball valves with lever handles or gate valves with round wheels. Turn both valves clockwise to shut off water flow to and from the device.

If your system has only one isolate valve, it is likely on the inlet side. In that case, you may need to rely on the backflow preventer’s internal check valves to hold back water on the outlet side. However, for complete draining, having both sides isolated is strongly recommended.

Step 3: Identify Drain Points

Most backflow preventers have dedicated drain ports or cocks. These are small threaded outlets, often with caps or plugs, located at the lowest points of the device. Common locations include:

• At the base of the first check valve chamber.
• At the base of the second check valve chamber (if applicable).
• On the relief port of a PVB or RPZ assembly.
• On the body of an atmospheric vacuum breaker.

If your backflow preventer does not have built-in drain ports, you may need to remove the bonnet or top cover to access the internal chambers. Take care not to damage any seals or springs during this process.

Step 4: Open the Drain Points

Place a bucket or container beneath each drain point to catch the draining water. Slowly open the drain cock or remove the drain plug by turning it counterclockwise. If you are removing a cap, use a wrench or pliers if necessary, but be gentle to avoid stripping threads.

Open the drain points in the following order:

1. Start with the inlet-side drain point (closest to the main water supply).
2. Next, open the outlet-side drain point.
3. Finally, open any relief or intermediate drain ports.

Allow the water to drain completely. This may take several minutes depending on the size of the device and the amount of residual water. Do not rush the process by forcing open valves, as this can cause water to spray unexpectedly.

Step 5: Verify Complete Draining

Once the initial flow stops, check each chamber and component to ensure no water remains. Tilt the device slightly if possible to encourage drainage from low spots. Use a rag or sponge to remove any residual water from internal chambers, seals, or spring mechanisms.

For double check valve assemblies and RPZ devices, you may need to remove the bonnet or access panel to fully inspect and dry the internal components. Take photos or notes during disassembly so you can reassemble the device correctly later.

Step 6: Close the Drain Points

After confirming the device is completely dry, close all drain points by tightening the plugs or caps. Make sure they are snug but do not overtighten, as this can damage threads or seals. Replace any caps or covers that were removed during the draining process.

Step 7: Reopen the Isolate Valves

Turn the isolate valves counterclockwise (lefty-loosey) to reopen them. For ball valves, turn the lever until it is parallel to the pipe. For gate valves, turn the wheel counterclockwise several times until it stops.

With the isolate valves open and the drain points closed, the backflow preventer is now ready for reassembly, testing, or storage. If you are preparing the system for winter, you can proceed with additional insulation or covering steps.

Pressure Testing After Draining

After draining and reassembling your backflow preventer, it is important to verify that the system is leak-free and operating at the correct pressure. A pressure test ensures that all seals, gaskets, and connections are secure before you restore full water flow.

How to Perform a Pressure Test

1. Close all drain points and ensure the backflow preventer is fully reassembled.
2. Open the isolate valves slowly to allow water to enter the device.
3. Monitor for leaks around all joints, connections, and seals. Look for drips, sprays, or water accumulation.
4. Check the pressure gauge (if equipped) to confirm it is within the manufacturer’s specified range. Typical operating pressure for residential systems is between 30 and 60 PSI.
5. Run a test cycle by briefly opening a downstream valve to allow water to flow through the system. Observe the backflow preventer for any signs of malfunction.

If you notice any leaks or pressure irregularities, shut off the water supply immediately and re-examine the affected connections. Tighten fittings as needed, replace damaged seals, or consult a professional if the problem persists.

Reassembling and Re-pressurizing

Once the backflow preventer has been drained and inspected, you must reassemble it correctly before restoring water flow. Improper reassembly can lead to leaks, reduced performance, or complete system failure.

Reassembly Checklist

• Ensure all internal components (check valves, springs, seals) are in their correct positions.
• Replace any O-rings, gaskets, or washers that show signs of wear or damage.
• Apply Teflon tape or pipe dope to all threaded connections as recommended by the manufacturer.
• Reinstall the bonnet or top cover, making sure it is aligned properly and tightened to the specified torque.
• Verify that all drain points are securely closed.
• Confirm that the isolate valves are fully open.

After reassembly, slowly reintroduce water into the system by opening the main supply valve gradually. This allows pressure to build up gently and gives you the opportunity to spot any leaks early.

Tips and Best Practices

Draining a sprinkler backflow preventer is straightforward when you follow best practices. These tips will help you work efficiently, avoid common pitfalls, and extend the life of your irrigation system.

General Tips

• Always shut off the main water supply first. Working on a pressurized system is dangerous and can lead to injury or equipment damage.
• Take photos before disassembly. Digital photos of the original configuration will help you reassemble the device correctly.
• Label drain points. Use small tags or tape to mark which drain point corresponds to which chamber, especially on complex assemblies.
• Keep a maintenance log. Record the date, type of service performed, and any observations. This helps track the device’s condition over time.
• Use the right tools. Using improper tools can strip fittings or damage delicate internal components.
• Check local codes. Some jurisdictions require annual inspections or certified technicians for certain backflow preventer types.

Winterization Tips

• Drain early. Wait until after the first hard freeze to drain, and you risk ice damage to the device.
• Use compressed air. For systems with automatic drains, you can blow out residual water using low-pressure compressed air.
• Insulate exposed components. Wrap the backflow preventer in insulation or heat tape to protect it from freezing temperatures.
• Cover the device. Use a weatherproof enclosure to shield the backflow preventer from snow, ice, and freezing rain.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Even experienced homeowners can make mistakes when draining a backflow preventer. These errors can lead to water damage, contamination, or premature failure of the device. Here are the most common mistakes and how to avoid them.

Mistake 1: Draining Without Shutting Off the Main Supply

One of the most dangerous mistakes is attempting to drain a backflow preventer while the main water supply is still active. This can cause water to spray unexpectedly, create pressure imbalances, and make it impossible to fully drain the device. Always shut off the main supply and verify that water is no longer flowing before beginning any draining procedure.

Mistake 2: Forcing Drain Valves Open

Drain valves and plugs can seize over time due to mineral buildup, corrosion, or freezing. Forcing them open with excessive torque can strip threads, break the valve, or damage the surrounding housing. Instead, apply penetrating oil and allow it to sit for several minutes before attempting to turn the valve. If it still will not budge, seek professional assistance rather than risking damage.

Mistake 3: Skipping the Pressure Relief Step

Many people forget to open a downstream valve to relieve pressure before draining. Trapped pressure can cause water to spray violently when drain points are opened, creating a mess and increasing the risk of injury. Always open a downstream faucet or sprinkler zone to depressurize the system before proceeding.

Mistake 4: Incomplete Draining

Failing to drain all chambers and components can leave residual water that freezes in winter or causes corrosion over time. Be thorough and check every drain point, chamber, and internal component. If necessary, remove the bonnet or top cover to access hard-to-reach areas.

Mistake 5: Improper Reassembly

Rushing the reassembly process or forgetting to replace seals and gaskets can result in leaks, pressure loss, or backflow contamination. Take your time during reassembly, follow the manufacturer’s torque specifications, and perform a pressure test before restoring full system operation.

Troubleshooting Persistent Issues

If you encounter problems during or after draining your backflow preventer, use this troubleshooting guide to diagnose and resolve common issues.

No Water Drains from the Device

If no water comes out when you open the drain points, the isolate valves may not be fully closed, or there may be a blockage in the drain line. Check that both inlet and outlet isolate valves are turned off completely. If the problem persists, inspect the drain points for debris or sediment buildup and clear them if necessary.

Water Continues to Leak After Draining

A persistent leak after draining usually indicates a damaged seal, cracked housing, or faulty check valve. Inspect all gaskets, O-rings, and valve seats for signs of wear or damage. Replace any compromised components and retest the system. If the leak continues, the backflow preventer may need to be replaced entirely.

Pressure Issues After Reassembly

If you notice low pressure or inconsistent flow after reassembling the backflow preventer, check for air locks in the system. Open downstream valves to allow air to escape, and ensure all drain points are fully closed. Verify that the check valves are seated correctly and that no internal components were damaged during disassembly.

Drain Valve Won’t Turn

Seized drain valves are a common issue, especially in older systems. Apply a liberal amount of penetrating oil and allow it to sit for at least 15 minutes. Gently tap the valve with a wrench to break up corrosion, then try turning it again. If it still will not budge, do not force it. Seek help from a certified technician to avoid breaking the valve off inside the housing.

When to Call a Professional

While many homeowners can successfully drain a backflow preventer on their own, there are situations where professional assistance is not just recommended but legally required. Understanding when to call a pro can save you time, money, and potential liability issues.

Situations Requiring a Certified Technician

• Annual testing mandates. Many local water authorities require annual inspections and certifications for backflow preventers connected to the public water supply.
• Complex assemblies. Reduced Pressure Principle Assemblies (RPZ) and large commercial systems often require specialized knowledge and tools.
• Internal component replacement. Replacing check valves, springs, or relief valves requires precision and should be done by trained professionals.
• Code compliance. Some jurisdictions have strict regulations about who can perform backflow preventer maintenance.
