Why Close a Sprinkler Head?

Closing a Rain Bird sprinkler head is not just about stopping water flow temporarily. There are several important reasons why you might need to shut off a sprinkler head:

• Repairs and replacements: A damaged or broken sprinkler head often requires immediate closure to prevent flooding or water waste.
• Zoning adjustments: You may want to shut off specific heads to adjust watering patterns or reduce overspray in certain areas.
• Winterization: In colder climates, closing sprinkler heads helps drain water from lines to prevent freezing and pipe bursts.
• Landscaping changes: Removing plants or redesigning your garden may require shutting off sprinklers that are no longer needed in that area.
• Water conservation: Closing malfunctioning heads reduces unnecessary water usage and lowers utility bills.

Understanding these scenarios will help you choose the most appropriate closure method for your situation.

Tools and Materials Needed

Before attempting to close a Rain Bird sprinkler head, gather the following tools and materials:

• Adjustable wrench or channel-lock pliers
• Screwdriver set (flathead and Phillips head)
• Garden hose or wet/dry vacuum
• Threaded pipe cap or plug
• Teflon tape or pipe dope
• Gloves for hand protection
• Safety glasses
• Bucket or container for catching water
• Shovel (if accessing underground components)

Having these items ready will make the process smoother and reduce the risk of damage to surrounding components.

Types of Rain Bird Sprinkler Heads

Rain Bird manufactures several types of sprinkler heads, each requiring slightly different approaches for closure:

Pop-Up Spray Heads

These are the most common residential sprinkler heads. They rise from the ground when water pressure is applied and retract when the system is off. Closing these typically involves shutting off the individual head or the zone valve.

Rotary Sprinklers

Larger, more powerful sprinklers designed for bigger areas. These often have adjustment screws and may require specialized tools for closure.

Drip Irrigation Emitters

Used for targeted watering of plants and gardens. These can be closed individually using small caps or plugs.

Valve Boxes

Access points for underground control valves. These allow you to shut off water to entire zones and are crucial for system-wide maintenance.

Identifying which type of sprinkler you are working with will determine the best approach for closing it effectively.

Manual Shut-Off Methods

There are several ways to manually close a Rain Bird sprinkler head, depending on your specific needs:

Individual Head Closure

This method involves physically closing the sprinkler head itself. You can do this by:

1. Turning the head clockwise until it stops.
2. Removing the sprinkler head and installing a threaded cap or plug.
3. Using a shut-off tool if your model supports it.

This approach is ideal when you only need to stop water flow to one specific sprinkler.

Zone Valve Shut-Off

For shutting off multiple sprinkler heads at once, locate and close the zone control valve:

1. Find the valve box for your irrigation zone.
2. Remove the lid and locate the valve handle.
3. Turn the handle clockwise to shut off water flow to the entire zone.

This method is more efficient when dealing with widespread issues or system-wide maintenance.

Step-by-Step Guide to Closing a Sprinkler Head

Follow these detailed steps to safely and effectively close a Rain Bird sprinkler head:

Step 1: Turn Off the Main Water Supply

Locate your irrigation system’s main water shut-off valve. This is usually found near your water meter or where the irrigation line branches off from your home’s main water supply. Turn the valve clockwise until it stops to cut off water to the entire system.

Step 2: Identify the Target Sprinkler

Walk through your yard and identify which sprinkler head needs to be closed. Look for signs of damage, leaks, or areas where you want to redirect water flow. Mark the location if necessary to avoid confusion during the process.

Step 3: Remove the Sprinkler Head

Use an adjustable wrench or channel-lock pliers to grip the base of the sprinkler head. Turn it counterclockwise to loosen and remove it from the riser pipe. Be prepared for some water to drain out, so have a bucket handy.

Step 4: Inspect Components

Once the head is removed, inspect the riser pipe and threads for any damage or debris. Clean the threads with a wire brush if necessary. Check for cracks or corrosion that might affect the seal when you install the replacement cap.

Step 5: Install a Threaded Cap or Plug

Wrap Teflon tape around the male threads of the riser pipe in a clockwise direction. This creates a watertight seal and prevents future leaks. Screw on a threaded cap or plug by hand, then tighten with a wrench. Be careful not to overtighten, which could damage the threads.

Step 6: Test the Closure

Turn the main water supply back on slowly. Observe the area where you installed the cap to ensure there are no leaks. If water seeps around the threads, tighten the cap slightly more or add additional Teflon tape.

Step 7: Restore System Functionality

If you were closing the head permanently, you can now cover the area with soil or mulch. If this was a temporary closure, keep the cap in place until you are ready to reinstall the sprinkler head.

Using the Valve Box Method

For more extensive work or when closing multiple heads, the valve box method is often more practical:

Locating the Valve Box

Valve boxes are typically located near the boundary of your property or in areas where irrigation zones converge. They are usually rectangular boxes about 6 inches deep with removable lids. Use a shovel to carefully dig around the area if you cannot locate it visually.

Accessing the Control Valve

Remove the valve box lid and clear away any debris. Inside, you will find one or more control valves connected to pipes. Each valve controls water flow to a specific zone of your irrigation system.

Operating the Valve Handle

Most Rain Bird valves have a manual override lever or a handwheel. To shut off water:

1. Locate the handle for the zone you want to close.
2. Turn the handle clockwise until it stops.
3. If there is a manual override, push it down and turn clockwise.

You should feel resistance as the valve seals. Some models may have indicator marks showing open and closed positions.

Verifying the Shut-Off

After closing the valve, turn on your irrigation system briefly to confirm that water flow has stopped in the target zone. Check all sprinkler heads in that zone to make sure none are still active.

Temporary Closure Options

Sometimes you need to close a sprinkler head temporarily, such as during construction or seasonal storage:

Rubber Plugs

For quick temporary closures, rubber plugs can be pushed into the sprinkler riser. These create a seal that prevents water from spraying out while allowing easy removal later. They are particularly useful for pop-up spray heads.

Foam Inserts

Similar to rubber plugs, foam inserts can be compressed into the sprinkler opening. They are lightweight and easy to install, making them ideal for short-term projects.

Adjustment Screws

Some Rain Bird sprinklers have adjustment screws that can reduce or stop water flow entirely. Simply turn the screw clockwise until water flow ceases. This method preserves the sprinkler head for future use.

Zip Tie Method

As an emergency solution, you can use a zip tie to secure the sprinkler head in its down position. While not waterproof, this prevents the head from rising and spraying water. Replace with a proper closure as soon as possible.

Permanent Removal Considerations

If you are removing a sprinkler head permanently, consider these factors:

System Design Changes

Removing a sprinkler head affects the overall balance of your irrigation system. Water pressure may increase in remaining heads, causing misting or inefficient watering. Consult your system’s design specifications or speak with an irrigation professional.

Pipe Capping and Sealing

When removing a head permanently, properly cap the supply line to prevent leaks and protect against debris entry. Bury the capped line below the frost line in cold climates to prevent freezing.

Landscape Integration

After permanent removal, integrate the area seamlessly into your landscape. Fill the depression left by the removed head with appropriate soil and plant suitable vegetation that matches your existing garden design.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Even experienced homeowners can make errors when closing Rain Bird sprinkler heads. Here are the most frequent mistakes and how to avoid them:

Mistake 1: Overtightening Connections

Tightening caps or valves too much can strip threads or crack fittings. Always tighten by hand first, then use tools for only a quarter to half turn additional tightness. If you feel excessive resistance, stop immediately.

Mistake 2: Ignoring System Pressure

Attempting to close a sprinkler head while the system is under pressure can cause dangerous water bursts. Always shut off the main water supply and open a downstream faucet to relieve pressure before starting work.

Mistake 3: Using Wrong Tools

Using inappropriate tools can damage sprinkler components. For example, using a regular wrench instead of a strap wrench on plastic fittings can crack them. Invest in or borrow the correct tools for your specific sprinkler model.

Mistake 4: Skipping Component Inspection

Failing to inspect the riser pipe, threads, and surrounding area can lead to future failures. Always examine all components for cracks, corrosion, or mineral buildup before reassembly.

Mistake 5: Not Testing After Closure

Some people close a sprinkler head and immediately assume the job is done. Always test the closure by turning the water back on and checking for leaks or continued water flow.

Mistake 6: Forgetting Teflon Tape

Without proper sealing materials, even well-tightened connections can leak. Always apply Teflon tape or pipe dope to threaded connections according to manufacturer specifications.

Troubleshooting Issues

If you encounter problems while closing your sprinkler head, refer to these troubleshooting solutions:

Issue: Water Still Flowing After Closure

If water continues to flow after you believe you have closed the head, check the following:

• Verify the main water supply is fully shut off.
• Check if there are additional heads on the same zone that may be supplying water to the line.
• Inspect the valve seat for damage or debris that might prevent proper sealing.
• Consider that the valve itself may be faulty and require replacement.

Issue: Sprinkler Head Difficult to Remove

If the sprinkler head won’t budge, try these approaches:

• Apply penetrating oil and let it sit for several minutes before attempting removal.
• Use a rubber strap wrench for better grip without damaging plastic components.
• Gently tap the wrench with a hammer to break loose corrosion or mineral deposits.
• If the head breaks off, use a specialized removal tool or seek professional assistance.

Issue: Threads Damaged During Removal

Damaged threads can compromise the seal of your replacement cap:

• Assess the extent of the damage carefully.
• For minor damage, clean threads thoroughly and use extra Teflon tape.
• For significant damage, consider replacing the riser pipe entirely.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my sprinkler head needs to be closed?

Signs that a sprinkler head should be closed include visible leaks, water spraying in unwanted directions, cracked or broken housing, continuous water flow when the system is off, or simply having a sprinkler in an area where you no longer need irrigation. If you notice geysers, soggy spots, or unusually high water bills, investigate your sprinkler system immediately.

Can I close a sprinkler head without turning off the main water supply?

While technically possible in some cases, it is strongly recommended to turn off the main water supply before closing any sprinkler head. Working under pressure increases the risk of injury from sudden water bursts and makes the job much more difficult. Taking the extra few minutes to shut off the water will save you time and potential problems in the long run.

What should I do if I can’t find the valve box for my zone?

If you cannot locate the valve box, try using an irrigation system map if one was provided during installation. You can also use a metal detector to find buried valve boxes, or contact a local irrigation professional who can trace the lines using specialized equipment. Some homeowners install above-ground valve boxes in visible locations to make future access easier.

Is it better to close a sprinkler head or replace it entirely?

This depends on your specific situation. If the sprinkler head is simply in an unwanted location but still functional, closing it is perfectly fine. However, if the head is damaged, old, or inefficient, replacing it with a newer model may be more cost-effective in the long term. Consider factors like water efficiency, warranty coverage, and future maintenance needs when making your decision.

How much does it typically cost to close a sprinkler head professionally?

Professional sprinkler head closure typically costs between $75 and $150 per head, depending on accessibility and complexity. Simple individual head closures are less expensive, while accessing buried valve boxes or dealing with complex system configurations may increase costs. DIY closure is much more affordable but requires proper tools and knowledge to avoid costly mistakes.

Can closing one sprinkler head affect the rest of my system?

Yes, closing individual sprinkler heads can affect system pressure and coverage patterns. Closing too many heads in a single zone may cause remaining heads to experience higher pressure, leading to misting, fogging, or uneven coverage. Always monitor your system after closing heads and adjust remaining sprinklers as needed to maintain optimal performance.

What materials should I use to seal a closed sprinkler connection?

For threaded connections, use high-quality Teflon tape or pipe dope specifically rated for irrigation systems. Apply Teflon tape in a clockwise direction around the male threads, covering all threads evenly. For permanent closures, consider using a threaded cap with an integrated rubber gasket for maximum sealing reliability. Avoid using standard plumbing sealants that may not withstand constant water exposure.

How do I winterize a closed sprinkler head?

In freezing climates, winterize closed sprinkler heads by ensuring all water drains from the line. After closing the head, use compressed air to blow out remaining water, or manually drain the line by opening downstream components. Insulate exposed pipes and consider using antifreeze solutions in low-lying areas where water tends to collect and freeze.

Can I close a sprinkler head myself or should I hire a professional?

Simple sprinkler head closures are generally safe for homeowners to perform themselves, provided you have the right tools and follow proper procedures. However, if you are uncomfortable working with plumbing systems, dealing with multiple zones, or have a complex irrigation setup, hiring a certified irrigation technician ensures the job is done correctly and safely.

What happens if I close a sprinkler head incorrectly?

Incorrect closure can result in continued water leakage, increased pressure in other parts of the system, or complete system failure. You might also damage threads, crack fittings, or create safety hazards from pressurized water bursts. Always double-check your work and test the closure thoroughly before assuming the job is complete.
