What Is a Sprinkler Blowout?

A sprinkler blowout is the process of forcing compressed air through your irrigation system to remove all remaining water from the pipes, valves, and sprinkler heads. After the blowout, your system should be completely empty of water so that freezing temperatures cannot expand any residual moisture and crack pipes, fittings, or valve boxes. This process is sometimes referred to as a winterization blowout, irrigation blowout, or sprinkler winterization. It is a standard part of any complete sprinkler system winterization protocol and is considered essential in climates where temperatures drop below freezing.

Why Winterizing Your Sprinkler System Matters

Water expands when it freezes. Inside the confined space of PVC or polyethylene pipes, this expansion creates enormous pressure that can easily split joints, crack fittings, and rupture pipes. A single freeze event can cause hundreds of dollars in damage, not only to the underground piping but also to sprinkler heads, valves, and controllers. Winterizing your sprinkler system through a proper blowout prevents these costly repairs and ensures your irrigation system is ready to function when spring arrives. Skipping this step is one of the most common reasons homeowners face expensive irrigation repairs after winter.

How Long Does Sprinkler Blowout Take?

The short answer is that a typical residential sprinkler blowout takes between 30 minutes and 2 hours to complete. Most standard systems with 6 to 10 zones can be fully winterized in about one hour. However, the actual time varies significantly depending on your system’s size, configuration, and the method used. Larger properties with more zones, complex layouts, or systems that have not been maintained may take closer to the two-hour mark. Understanding the timeline helps you plan accordingly and set realistic expectations whether you hire a professional or tackle the job yourself.

Factors That Affect Blowout Duration

Several key factors influence how long the blowout process will take:

• Number of zones: Each zone in your irrigation system needs to be individually pressurized with compressed air. More zones mean more time. A basic system with 5 zones will take significantly less time than a large property with 15 or more zones.
• System complexity: Systems with numerous bends, tees, long pipe runs, or multiple elevation changes require more time to ensure all water is expelled. Complex layouts may need additional air pressure and longer blowout times per zone.
• Pipe material and condition: Older systems with galvanized steel pipes or systems that have accumulated mineral buildup may take longer to clear. PVC and polyethylene systems generally allow faster, more efficient blowouts.
• Air compressor capacity: A high-capacity commercial compressor can push air through the system more quickly than a smaller residential unit. Professionals typically use large-capacity compressors rated at 10+ CFM (cubic feet per minute).
• Previous maintenance: Systems that were properly winterized in previous years and kept in good condition tend to blow out faster than neglected systems where water may have remained trapped for extended periods.
• Weather conditions: Extremely cold or windy days can affect compressor performance and make the process slightly slower. Ideally, schedule your blowout on a mild day when temperatures are above freezing.

Step-by-Step Guide to Blowing Out Your Sprinkler System

Follow these steps carefully to perform a thorough sprinkler blowout:

1. Turn off the water supply. Locate the main shutoff valve for your irrigation system and turn it off completely. This prevents any new water from entering the system while you are blowing it out.
2. Shut off the controller. Disable your irrigation controller or set it to the rain position so it cannot accidentally activate during the blowout process.
3. Release manual drain valves. If your system has manual drain valves at the lowest points, open them to allow gravity to remove a significant portion of standing water before the blowout begins.
4. Connect the air compressor. Attach the air compressor hose to the system’s blowout port or adapter. Most systems have a dedicated port near the backflow preventer. Use the correct adapter to ensure a secure connection.
5. Set the compressor pressure. Adjust the compressor to deliver air at a safe pressure, typically between 50 and 80 PSI for residential systems. Never exceed the pressure rating of your pipes and fittings. For PVC systems, stay below 80 PSI; for polyethylene systems, keep pressure below 50 PSI.
6. Blow out each zone individually. Go through each zone one at a time. Open the zone valve and allow compressed air to push water out through the sprinkler heads. Continue until the water stream weakens to a mist or stops entirely. Each zone typically takes 3 to 10 minutes depending on its size.
7. Check sprinkler heads. After each zone is blown out, inspect the sprinkler heads to confirm water has been fully expelled. You should see only air coming from the heads.
8. Disconnect the compressor. Once all zones are complete, disconnect the air compressor and close any remaining drain valves.
9. Reinstall sprinkler heads and caps. If you removed sprinkler risers or heads for the winter, reinstall them now to protect the system from debris and animals.

Equipment You Will Need

Having the right equipment is essential for a successful sprinkler blowout. Here is what you need:

• Air compressor: A compressor rated for at least 10 CFM is recommended for residential systems. Many hardware stores and equipment rental shops offer commercial-grade compressors for daily rental.
• Pressure regulator: This device attaches between the compressor and the irrigation system to control the airflow and prevent excessive pressure that could damage pipes and fittings.
• Hose adapter: You will need the correct fitting to connect your compressor hose to the system’s blowout port. Common adapters include quick-connect fittings and threaded adapters.
• Safety goggles and gloves: Compressed air and residual water can be hazardous. Always wear protective eyewear and gloves during the blowout process.
• Sprinkler head removal tool: If you plan to remove sprinkler heads before winter, a dedicated removal tool makes the job much easier.
• Notebook or tablet: Keep track of which zones you have completed and any issues you encounter during the process.

DIY vs Professional Sprinkler Blowout

Many homeowners consider doing the sprinkler blowout themselves to save money. While it is certainly possible to DIY the process, there are important considerations to keep in mind. A professional irrigation technician has specialized training, commercial-grade equipment, and the experience to complete the job efficiently and safely. They understand the pressure limits of different pipe materials and can identify potential problem areas that a homeowner might overlook. On the other hand, a careful and well-prepared homeowner with the right equipment can absolutely perform a satisfactory blowout. The key is to follow the correct procedure, use appropriate pressure levels, and never rush through the process.

Sprinkler Blowout Cost Estimates

If you are considering hiring a professional, the typical cost for a residential sprinkler blowout ranges from $55 to $150, depending on your location, the number of zones, and the complexity of the system. Some companies charge a flat rate, while others charge per zone, usually between $8 and $15 per zone. For a standard 8-zone system, you can expect to pay approximately $100 to $140. Many landscaping and irrigation companies offer bundled packages that include the blowout along with other winterization services, which can provide better value. Scheduling the blowout early in the fall season may also help you avoid peak pricing.

Best Time to Schedule a Sprinkler Blowout

Timing is critical when it comes to sprinkler winterization. You should schedule your blowout before the first hard freeze of the season, which is typically defined as a night where temperatures drop below 28 degrees Fahrenheit for several consecutive hours. In most regions, this falls between late October and mid-November. Waiting too long increases the risk of an unexpected freeze that could damage your still-water-filled system. On the other hand, scheduling too early means you miss the benefit of any late-season watering. A good rule of thumb is to schedule the blowout when nighttime temperatures consistently stay in the mid-40s to low-50s Fahrenheit range. This ensures your system is protected well in advance of dangerous cold.

Tips and Best Practices

• Never exceed the pressure rating of your pipes. PVC pipes are particularly vulnerable to high-pressure air. Stay at or below 80 PSI for PVC and 50 PSI for polyethylene systems to prevent blowouts in the pipes you are trying to protect.
• Blow out zones from the highest elevation to the lowest. This strategy ensures that water naturally drains from upper zones before air pushes through lower zones, resulting in a more complete removal of moisture.
• Open all manual drain valves before starting. Allowing gravity to remove initial water reduces the total volume the compressor needs to push out, saving time and compressor capacity.
• Listen for changes in sound. When blowing out a zone, you will hear a strong sputtering sound that gradually weakens to a hiss or silence. This indicates water is being expelled. Wait until the sound fully diminishes before moving to the next zone.
• Consider a second pass for large or complex systems. If you have a large property or a system that was poorly maintained, running through all zones a second time can help ensure complete water removal.
• Keep a record of your blowout dates. Document when you had the blowout performed and any issues found. This helps track system health and plan for future maintenance.
• Install automatic drain valves if you do not have them. These valves open automatically when pressure drops, draining residual water from the system without manual intervention. They are a valuable addition for any irrigation system.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Even with the best intentions, homeowners and some professionals make avoidable errors during the sprinkler blowout process. Being aware of these mistakes can save you time, money, and damage to your system.

• Using too much pressure: This is the single most dangerous mistake. Excessive air pressure can burst PVC joints, crack fittings, and damage valve internals. Always use a pressure regulator and stay within safe limits.
• Skipping zones: It is easy to lose track when blowing out multiple zones. Skipping even one zone leaves water trapped in those pipes, creating a freeze risk. Use a checklist and verify every zone is completed.
• Not turning off the controller: If the controller activates during the blowout, it can cause unexpected water flow that interferes with the compressed air process and potentially damages the controller electronics.
• Rushing the process: Some homeowners try to speed through the blowout by running all zones simultaneously or using excessive pressure. This compromises effectiveness and increases the risk of damage.
• Forgetting to reinstall sprinkler heads: After the blowout, leaving sprinkler risers exposed allows debris, leaves, and animals to enter the system. Always reinstall heads or protective caps after the process is complete.
• Waiting until the first freeze: Procrastination is a common and costly mistake. Last-minute scheduling often means rushed work, and an unexpected hard freeze can arrive before the job is done.
• Ignoring leaky valves or fittings: If you notice any leaks during the blowout, have them addressed promptly. Leaks can allow water to remain in the system even after a proper blowout.
