Understanding Your Bolens Weed Eater Model

Bolens manufactures several weed eater styles, including gas-powered trimmers, corded electric units, and battery-operated models. Each type shares similar stringing principles, but the disassembly steps can vary slightly depending on the design. Before starting, locate your model number, which is typically printed on a metal plate near the motor housing or along the shaft.

Gas-powered Bolens trimmers often feature a bump-feed mechanism, where tapping the cutting head on the ground releases more line automatically. Electric and battery models may use a manual feed or auto-feed system. Understanding your specific feed type helps you avoid forcing components that are not meant to be disassembled during routine string replacement.

Consult your owner’s manual when possible. The manual usually contains a diagram showing the correct string path and recommended line gauge. If you no longer have the physical copy, many manufacturers provide downloadable PDFs on their official websites. Having this reference handy reduces the risk of incorrect installation.

Locating the Model Number

The model number is essential for ordering replacement parts and verifying string specifications. On gas trimmers, check the engine shroud or the recoil starter cover. On electric models, inspect the motor housing or the base of the handle assembly. Write down both the model number and any serial number listed nearby for future reference.

Before You Begin: Tools and Materials

Gathering everything you need before disassembly prevents unnecessary interruptions. While some steps require no special tools, having the right supplies on hand streamlines the process significantly.

• New trim line compatible with your Bolens model
• Small flathead screwdriver
• Phillips-head screwdriver (if applicable)
• Clean cloth or paper towels
• Mild detergent or degreaser
• Work surface covered with a towel

Using the correct string gauge matters more than you might expect. Too thin, and the line tangles or breaks frequently. Too thick, and it jams the spool or overloads the motor. Refer to your manual or the comparison table later in this guide to confirm the proper diameter.

Identifying the Correct String Type

Trim lines come in three main formats: round, square, and star-shaped cross-section. Round line is the most common and works well for general trimming. Square and star-shaped lines offer increased durability and cutting efficiency but may not be compatible with all head designs.

String thickness is measured in inches or millimeters. Standard sizes range from 0.065 inch to 0.130 inch. Light-duty electric trimmers typically use thinner lines around 0.065 to 0.080 inch, while heavy-duty gas models accept lines up to 0.130 inch. Installing the wrong size can cause uneven feeding or premature wear.

Some manufacturers pre-spool replacement cartridges that fit directly into the cutting head. These are convenient but often more expensive than bulk line. For frequent users, purchasing spools of bulk line and refilling yourself proves more economical over time.

Safety Precautions and Workspace Setup

Never attempt string replacement while the tool is plugged in, connected to a battery, or fueled. Allow gas engines to cool completely before handling internal components. Residual heat can cause burns, and fuel vapors pose a fire hazard.

Work in a clean, well-lit area free of clutter. Lay a towel on your work surface to protect delicate parts from scratches. Keep small screws and springs in a container so they do not roll away during disassembly.

Wear safety glasses when removing old line, especially if it is frayed or tangled. Small debris can become airborne and irritate your eyes. If you are working with a gas model, ensure the spark plug wire is disconnected to prevent accidental starting.

Removing the Old String

Start by releasing tension on the existing line. For bump-feed heads, press the release button or lever located on the side of the cutting head. For manual-feed models, remove the cap or cover that secures the spool in place.

Once tension is released, pull the old line free from the eyelets or guide holes in the cutting head. If the line is tangled, gently work it loose rather than yanking, which can damage the internal springs or gears.

Inspect the interior of the spool housing for debris, grass clippings, or old adhesive residue. Clean these away with a damp cloth before installing the new line. A clean housing ensures smooth operation and prevents premature wear.

Disassembly Steps by Feed Type

Bump-feed heads usually require pressing a retaining tab while rotating the cap counterclockwise. Manual-feed spools often unscrew directly or slide off after removing a locking screw. Take note of how each component fits together so reassembly goes smoothly.

Preparing the Spool and Housing

Before winding new line, examine the spool for grooves or channels that guide the string. These grooves prevent overlapping, which causes tangles during operation. If your spool has multiple compartments, ensure each section receives an equal length of line.

Check the spring-loaded tension mechanism. Over time, springs can lose tension or become clogged with debris. If the spring feels weak or inconsistent, consider replacing it along with the string. A properly tensioned spool feeds line smoothly and retracts excess length automatically.

Mark the starting point on your spool with a piece of tape. This helps maintain consistent winding direction and prevents the line from loosening during use.

Winding the New String Correctly

Begin by cutting a length of new trim line approximately 15 to 20 feet long. Insert one end into the designated starting hole in the spool, leaving a short tail inside the spool chamber.

Hold the spool firmly and wind the line in the direction indicated by arrows molded into the plastic. Most spools specify clockwise or counterclockwise rotation. Winding against the arrow direction causes the line to bind and tangle.

Maintain even tension as you wind. Loose windings create gaps that lead to uneven feeding. If the line overlaps or crosses itself, unwind and start over to avoid operational problems later.

How Much Line to Use Per Compartment

For dual-line spools, divide your total line length evenly between both sides. For example, a 20-foot spool should allocate 10 feet to each compartment. Leaving too much line in one side creates imbalance and increases the chance of binding.

Threading String Through the Cutting Head

After winding, route the line through the guide holes or eyelets in the cutting head. These openings are usually located on opposite sides of the housing. Push the line through until equal lengths extend from each side.

For bump-feed systems, pull enough line through so that roughly 6 inches extend beyond each eyelet. For manual-feed heads, follow the manufacturer’s recommendation, typically 4 to 6 inches per side.

Ensure the line sits flush in the grooves and does not catch on any internal components. Misrouted line can cause the head to jam or feed erratically during operation.

Securing and Testing the Line

Reinstall the spool cap or cover according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Tighten any screws or locking mechanisms, but do not overtighten, as this can strip plastic threads or deform the housing.

Before powering on the tool, manually rotate the cutting head several times to confirm smooth movement. Listen for unusual noises that might indicate misalignment or binding.

If your model includes a line-trimmer line indicator, verify that it moves freely. Some advanced units display remaining line length electronically. Confirm that the display functions correctly after reassembly.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Even with careful attention to detail, problems can arise. Here are the most frequent issues and their solutions:

Line Jams During Feed

Jams typically result from improper winding or using a line that is too thick for your head design. Unwind the spool, inspect for crossed lines, and rewind carefully. If the problem persists, switch to a thinner gauge line recommended for your model.

Uneven Line Length

When one side extends farther than the other, the spool is likely wound unevenly. Disassemble and redistribute the line equally between compartments. Always cut new lengths from the same spool to maintain consistency.

Automatic Feed Not Working

A clogged or worn spring mechanism often causes auto-feed failure. Remove the head, clean out debris, and check the spring for damage. Replace the spring if it appears stretched or brittle.

Comparison of String Types and Sizes

The table below compares common trim line options to help you choose the best fit for your Bolens weed eater and trimming tasks.

Choosing the correct combination of type and size depends on your trimming frequency, vegetation density, and personal preference. Round line remains the most versatile option for everyday use.

Tips and Best Practices

Developing good habits during string replacement extends the life of your cutting head and reduces future maintenance needs. Consider these recommendations:

• Replace the trim line before it becomes completely depleted. Running the spool dry can damage internal gears.
• Store extra line in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. UV exposure degrades nylon over time.
• Label your spools with the date of installation. Tracking usage helps you identify optimal replacement intervals.
• Use a line cutter or sharp scissors instead of tearing the line by hand. Clean cuts prevent fraying and tangles.
• After each use, wipe down the cutting head and remove trapped debris. Regular cleaning prevents buildup that interferes with line feed.
• If you trim frequently, keep two fully assembled spools ready. Swapping takes seconds and eliminates downtime during peak season.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mistakes during string replacement often stem from rushing or skipping important preparatory steps. Recognizing these pitfalls helps you complete the job correctly the first time.

Over-Tightening Components

Plastic housings strip easily when over-tightened. Apply firm but gentle pressure when securing caps and screws. If resistance feels excessive, stop and recheck alignment.

Using the Wrong String Gauge

Installing line that is too thick or too thin for your model leads to feeding problems and premature wear. Always verify specifications in your owner’s manual before purchasing replacement line.

Skipping the Cleaning Step

Dirt and debris trapped inside the spool housing cause friction and uneven line feed. Even if the old line looks fine, clean the chamber thoroughly before installing new string.

Ignoring Winding Direction

Every spool has a designated winding direction marked by arrows. Reversing this direction causes the line to unwind itself during operation, resulting in constant tangling and poor cutting performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Often Should I Replace the Trim Line?

Replace the trim line whenever it becomes noticeably shorter, frayed, or tangled. For regular users, this typically occurs every 20 to 40 hours of operation. Occasional users may go several months between replacements. Monitoring line length during use helps prevent sudden depletion mid-job.

Can I Use Any Nylon String?

While nylon is the standard material, not all diameters and shapes are universally compatible. Using the wrong size can damage your cutting head or void your warranty. Always match the string specifications provided by Bolens for your specific model.

What If the String Breaks Inside the Head?

Turn off the tool and disconnect any power source. Remove the cutting head cover and carefully extract the broken piece using needle-nose pliers. Inspect the interior for sharp edges that may have caused the break, and file them down if necessary before installing new line.

Is Bump Feed Easy to Reload?

Bump feed systems are generally straightforward once you understand the release mechanism. Press the release button, remove the cap, and follow the same winding and threading steps as manual-feed models. The key difference is that bump feed automatically dispenses line when you tap the head on the ground during operation.

Can I Replace the String Myself?

Yes, replacing the trim line is a simple task that most users can complete in under 15 minutes. The process requires no specialized tools beyond a screwdriver and clean cloth. Following this guide step by step ensures a successful outcome without professional assistance.

Why Does My Line Tangle After Replacement?

Tangling usually results from improper winding technique or using a line that is too thick for your spool. Ensure you wind in the correct direction with even tension, and verify that the line diameter matches your model’s requirements. If problems persist, the spool itself may be worn and in need of replacement.
