Tools and Preparation
Before you begin learning how to open DeWalt weed eater head units, gather a small set of tools and prepare your workspace. Having everything ready prevents unnecessary interruptions and reduces the risk of losing small parts.
- A flathead screwdriver or a plastic prying tool
- A pair of needle-nose pliers
- A clean cloth or rag
- A small container for holding screws and springs
- Replacement trimmer line (if needed)
Choose a well-lit area, preferably a sturdy table or bench. Lay down a soft cloth to protect both your tool and any delicate components. If your model includes a battery pack, remove it before starting to eliminate any chance of accidental activation.
Safety First
Safety should always come first when working with power tools. Even though the engine will be off, moving parts can still cause injury if mishandled.
- Always disconnect the spark plug wire or remove the battery before beginning.
- Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from dust and debris.
- Work in a dry environment to avoid electrical hazards.
- Keep small children and pets away from your workspace.
These simple precautions dramatically reduce the chance of accidents and allow you to focus entirely on the task at hand.
Identify Your Head Type
DeWalt produces several different weed eater head styles, and each requires a slightly different approach when answering the question of how to open DeWalt weed eater head assemblies.
Bump Feed Heads
The most common type found on consumer-grade trimmers is the bump feed head. These heads release line automatically when you tap the bottom against the ground while operating the tool. They typically feature a removable cap or button on top that allows manual access to the spool.
Fixed-Line Heads
Fixed-line heads come pre-loaded with line and do not require frequent reloading. However, they still need periodic cleaning and inspection. Access usually involves removing screws from the housing rather than simply popping off a cap.
Auto-Feed Heads
Higher-end models may include auto-feed mechanisms that advance line automatically. These often have more complex internal components and might require additional care during disassembly.
Consult your owner’s manual if you are unsure which category your model falls into. The manual will provide diagrams and part numbers specific to your trimmer.
Step-by-Step Opening Process
Now that you understand your head type, let’s dive into the core of how to open DeWalt weed eater head units. The following steps apply to most bump feed models, which represent the majority of DeWalt trimmers on the market.
- Disconnect power: Remove the battery or disconnect the spark plug wire to ensure the trimmer cannot start unexpectedly.
- Locate the release mechanism: Most bump feed heads have either a twist-off cap, a push-button latch, or a small tab on the side of the housing.
- Apply gentle pressure: If your head uses a twist-off cap, rotate it counterclockwise while holding the body steady. For push-button models, press the button firmly and lift upward.
- Remove the outer shell: Once the cap or button is released, gently pull the outer shell away from the motor housing. Some resistance is normal due to internal springs and gears.
- Extract the spool: The inner spool containing the trimmer line should now be visible. Carefully lift it straight out, noting the orientation of any springs or washers.
Take your time during each step. Rushing increases the likelihood of damaging delicate components or losing small parts.
Removing the Spool
The spool is the heart of the cutting system, and proper removal is crucial for successful maintenance. After opening the head, you will typically see a plastic or metal spool with two ends.
- Observe how the spool sits inside the housing before pulling it out.
- Note the direction of any coil springs that tension the line.
- Check for debris or old line fragments trapped in the housing.
If the spool feels stuck, do not force it. Instead, use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry it loose while supporting the motor housing with your other hand.
Cleaning and Inspection
With the spool removed, take the opportunity to clean the interior of the head. Over time, grass clippings, dirt, and old line fragments can accumulate and interfere with smooth operation.
- Use a soft brush or cloth to remove loose debris.
- Inspect the housing for cracks or worn gaskets.
- Check the spool for damage or uneven wear.
- Examine the feed mechanism for signs of binding or corrosion.
If you discover significant damage, consider ordering replacement parts from DeWalt or an authorized dealer.
Reloading the Line
Once the head is clean and inspected, you can reload the trimmer line. This step is the reverse of removal but deserves careful attention to detail.
- Choose the correct line diameter: Refer to your manual for specifications. Common sizes include 0.065 inches and 0.080 inches.
- Cut a new length of line: Measure approximately 15 to 20 feet, depending on your head’s capacity.
- Thread the line: Insert one end of the line into the designated hole on the spool and wind it evenly in the direction indicated by arrows on the spool.
- Secure the line: Leave a short tail protruding from the spool to prevent it from retracting completely.
- Reinstall the spool: Place the spool back into the housing, ensuring it sits flush and rotates freely.
Proper winding technique is essential. If the line overlaps or tangles, it will not feed smoothly during use.
Reassembling the Head
After reloading the line, reassemble the head in the reverse order of disassembly.
- Align the housing halves: Ensure all tabs and grooves line up correctly before applying pressure.
- Secure the cap or button: Twist or snap the outer shell back into place until you hear a click.
- Test the feed mechanism: Gently pull the line to confirm it feeds freely without binding.
- Reconnect power: Reinstall the battery or reconnect the spark plug wire.
Perform a quick test run in a safe area to verify everything operates as expected. Listen for unusual noises and watch for erratic line behavior, which could indicate improper assembly.
Common Problems and Fixes
Even experienced users occasionally encounter issues when answering the question of how to open DeWalt weed eater head units. Here are some common problems and their solutions.
Spool Won’t Come Out
If the spool refuses to budge, try these approaches:
- Double-check that all screws or latches have been fully released.
- Use a flathead screwdriver to gently lever the spool upward while supporting the housing.
- Avoid using excessive force, which can crack the housing or strip internal components.
Line Jams Frequently
Frequent jams usually stem from one of these causes:
- Overwound line creating tangles inside the spool.
- Using the wrong line diameter for your model.
- Dirty or worn feed mechanisms.
Disassemble the head again, clean all components, and rewind the line carefully according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Head Wobbles After Reassembly
A loose or wobbly head indicates incomplete reassembly:
- Ensure the outer shell is fully seated and locked into place.
- Check that all screws or fasteners are tightened to the recommended torque.
- Verify that the spool is properly aligned within the housing.
