Why Restringing Matters
Regular maintenance keeps your Redmax Weed Eater operating at peak efficiency. Over time, the cutting line gradually wears down due to contact with concrete, brick, and thick vegetation. As the line shortens, you lose cutting width and effectiveness. Continuing to use a worn-out line forces the motor to work harder, which drains battery life faster on cordless models and puts unnecessary strain on the engine in gas-powered units. Proper restringing restores optimal cutting performance and prevents premature component failure. It also ensures safety by reducing the risk of line breakage at high speeds.
Tools and Materials Needed
Before beginning any disassembly, gather these essential items. Having everything ready prevents delays and reduces frustration during the process.
- New trimmer line compatible with your Redmax model
- Small flathead screwdriver
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Clean cloth or paper towels
- Compressed air canister (optional)
- Gloves for hand protection
- Owner’s manual reference
Most homeowners already have basic tools like screwdrivers available. However, investing in quality replacements extends the lifespan of your equipment significantly.
Identifying Your Redmax Model
Redmax produces numerous string trimmer variants ranging from lightweight residential units to heavy-duty commercial machines. Locating your specific model number simplifies sourcing correct parts and following manufacturer guidelines. Check the engine housing or motor casing for a metal plate displaying the model designation. Popular series include the BCZ, HTZ, and TRZ lines. Each uses different spool sizes and line diameters. Consulting your owner’s manual provides detailed specifications including recommended line thickness and maximum capacity.
Preparation Steps Before Starting
Safety always comes first when working with power tools. Follow these preparatory measures to ensure safe handling throughout the procedure.
- Turn off the unit completely and disconnect spark plug wire if using a gas model.
- Allow the engine to cool before touching hot components.
- Place the trimmer on a stable surface covered with a soft cloth.
- Remove any debris stuck around the housing using compressed air.
- Have your replacement line ready and verify compatibility.
Taking these precautions minimizes accidents and protects delicate internal mechanisms from contamination.
Removing the Old Line
With preparation complete, carefully remove the spent line from the spool assembly. Begin by locating the release mechanism on the trimmer head. Most Redmax models feature either a push-button release or a twist-lock cap system. Press or rotate accordingly until the spool detaches from the main housing. Once removed, unwind remaining line segments still lodged within the chamber. Pay attention to how the original line was routed to avoid confusion during reinstallation.
Cleaning the Spool Assembly
A clean spool ensures smooth operation after restringing. Inspect the interior walls for accumulated dirt, grass clippings, and old adhesive residue. Use a soft brush or cloth dampened with mild solvent to gently scrub away stubborn buildup. For tight corners, compressed air effectively dislodges particles without damaging plastic components. Avoid using sharp objects that could scratch surfaces and compromise structural integrity. A well-cleaned spool promotes better line feed control and prevents tangles.
Selecting the Right Replacement Line
Choosing the correct replacement line impacts performance and durability. Redmax recommends specific diameters based on trimmer horsepower and intended application. Common options include:
- 0.065 inch – Light-duty trimming for delicate plants
- 0.080 inch – Standard duty suitable for general yard work
- 0.095 inch – Heavy-duty applications involving thick stems
- 0.105 inch – Commercial-grade tasks requiring maximum strength
Always match the new line to your equipment’s rating to prevent binding or excessive wear.
Winding Technique Explained
Proper winding technique prevents tangles and ensures consistent line deployment. Start by cutting a length of new line approximately six feet long. Tie one end securely through the anchor hole located at the center of the spool. Hold the spool firmly and begin wrapping the line in even coils following the direction indicated by arrows molded into the plastic. Maintain moderate tension while winding to keep coils tight but not overly compressed. Leave about four inches of tail extending beyond the last wrap for easy threading later.
Installing the New Line
After completing the winding process, reinstall the spool assembly into the trimmer head housing. Align the tabs on the spool with corresponding slots in the outer casing. Push the spool downward until it clicks into place. Thread the loose end of the line through the exit port located near the bottom of the head. Pull gently until several inches extend freely. Test rotation manually to confirm smooth movement without resistance or binding.
Testing and Adjustment
Before returning to active use, perform several checks to validate proper installation. Reconnect the spark plug wire if applicable. Hold the trimmer perpendicular to the ground and activate briefly. Observe whether the line feeds smoothly and retracts evenly. If feeding issues occur, inspect for crossed winds or incorrect routing. Minor adjustments may involve repositioning the line path or adding slight additional tension during rewinding.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Despite careful execution, occasional problems arise requiring deeper investigation. Below are typical symptoms and their likely causes:
- Line fails to feed: Likely caused by kinked or improperly seated spool.
- Excessive vibration: Usually results from unbalanced line distribution.
- Spool won’t stay attached: Indicates misalignment or damaged locking mechanism.
Addressing these concerns promptly restores functionality and avoids escalation into more serious mechanical faults.
