Why Restring Your Weed Eater
Over time, the trim line on your Hart 40V Weed Eater wears down from constant contact with concrete, brick, and thick vegetation. When the line becomes too short or starts fraying, cutting efficiency drops significantly. Regular restringing ensures clean, precise cuts and reduces strain on the motor. It also prevents the need for emergency replacements during yard work sessions.
Tools and Materials Needed
Before starting, gather these essential items:
- New trim line (0.080 inch or 0.095 inch diameter)
- Small flathead screwdriver
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Clean cloth or paper towels
- Optional: compressed air or soft brush
Hart recommends using genuine replacement parts for optimal compatibility, though high-quality aftermarket lines also work well.
Preparing the Unit
- Remove the battery. Slide the battery release latch and pull the pack away from the motor housing.
- Place the unit on a stable surface. Lay the weed eater on a workbench or sturdy table with the cutting head facing up.
- Engage the trigger lock. If your model has a safety switch, activate it to prevent accidental startup.
Always disconnect power before performing maintenance to avoid injury.
Removing the Old Spool
- Locate the spool cover. The trim head typically features a circular cover secured by screws or a quick-release mechanism.
- Remove screws or release tabs. Use a Phillips head screwdriver for screw-on covers, or press the release tabs for snap-on versions.
- Pull off the cover. Lift the cover straight up to expose the spool underneath.
- Extract the old spool. Gently lift the spool out of the housing. Note the direction of the line feed.
Take a moment to observe how the old line was routed to ensure proper reinstallment.
Cleaning the Housing
Dirt, grass clippings, and debris can accumulate inside the trim head housing over time. Use a clean cloth or soft brush to wipe away buildup. For stubborn residue, lightly blow out particles with compressed air. A clean housing ensures smooth operation and prevents premature wear on new components.
Winding the New Line
- Cut a fresh length of line. Measure approximately 15 feet of new trim line for most Hart 40V models.
- Identify the winding direction. Look for an arrow on the spool indicating the correct winding direction.
- Anchor the line. Insert about 1 inch of line into the small hole at the center of the spool.
- Wind evenly. Rotate the spool in the indicated direction, keeping tension on the line as you go. Fill the spool to the rim without overlapping.
- Leave a tail. Leave roughly 6 inches of unwound line extending from the spool after winding completes.
Proper winding technique prevents tangles and ensures consistent line feed during use.
Installing the New Spool
- Insert the spool. Place the wound spool back into the housing, aligning the tail with the line exit port.
- Route the tail. Feed the loose end through the exit hole until it extends about 2 inches beyond the housing.
- Replace the cover. Position the cover over the housing and secure it with screws or snap it into place.
- Reinstall the battery. Reconnect the battery pack once assembly is complete.
Double-check that all screws are tightened and the cover sits flush against the housing.
Testing Operation
Before putting the tool to work, verify proper function:
- Turn on the unit briefly to confirm smooth startup.
- Listen for unusual noises or vibrations.
- Check that the line feeds freely without binding.
If issues arise, power down immediately and recheck installation steps.
Choosing the Right String Type
Selecting appropriate trim line affects performance and longevity:
- Square line: Offers aggressive cutting action for heavy-duty applications.
- Round line: Provides general-purpose trimming suitable for light to medium tasks.
- Cable-style line: Delivers enhanced durability in demanding conditions.
For residential use, round 0.080 inch line works well. Heavy-duty landscaping may benefit from square or cable-style 0.095 inch options.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Line won’t feed | Tangled or incorrectly wound spool | Rewind carefully following directional arrows |
| Excessive vibration | Loose spool or misaligned cover | Ensure secure fit and proper alignment |
| Poor cutting performance | Worn or undersized line | Replace with fresh, appropriately sized string |
| Battery drains quickly | Binding line or overloaded motor | Check for obstructions and proper line tension |
String and Spool Comparison
| Feature | Round Line | Square Line | Cable-Style Line |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diameter Options | 0.080″, 0.095″ | 0.080″, 0.095″ | 0.095″, 0.105″ |
| Cutting Aggression | Moderate | High | Very High |
| Durability | Standard | Good | Excellent |
| Noise Level | Low | Moderate | Moderate |
| Best For | Light trimming | Heavy weeds | Thick brush |
Tips and Best Practices
- Keep spare spools stocked. Pre-wound spools reduce downtime during seasonal maintenance.
- Store line properly. Keep trim line in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent degradation.
- Check line length regularly. Monitor line consumption and replace before it becomes too short.
- Use pliers for stubborn knots. Small needle-nose pliers help untangle tightly bound sections safely.
- Mark winding direction. Make a note or take a photo before removing the old spool to remember the correct orientation.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Even experienced users occasionally make errors when restringing their Hart 40V Weed Eater. Here are frequent pitfalls and how to prevent them:
- Winding in the wrong direction. Always follow the arrow printed on the spool to maintain proper tension and feed.
- Overfilling the spool. Packing too much line causes binding and inconsistent feeding during operation.
- Skipping the test run. Failing to check functionality after reassembly can lead to unexpected failures mid-job.
- Using incorrect line size. Mismatched diameters prevent smooth feeding and may damage internal components.
- Neglecting housing cleanliness. Debris trapped inside interferes with spool rotation and accelerates wear.
Frequently Asked Questions
What type of string does a Hart 40V Weed Eater use?
Most Hart 40V models accept 0.080 inch or 0.095 inch diameter trim line. Round, square, and cable-style lines are all compatible depending on your trimming needs. Always consult your owner’s manual for specific recommendations.
How often should I restring my Hart 40V Weed Eater?
Rearrange or replace the trim line whenever it becomes too short, frayed, or tangled. For typical residential use, this occurs every 20 to 40 hours of operation. Frequent users working in abrasive conditions may need to restring more often.
Can I use aftermarket string instead of genuine Hart replacements?
Yes, many third-party manufacturers produce compatible trim lines that perform comparably to OEM parts. However, genuine Hart replacements guarantee perfect fit and optimal performance.
What happens if I wind the line in the wrong direction?
Winding against the indicated direction causes the line to loosen during operation, leading to poor feeding, frequent tangles, and potential motor strain. Always follow the directional arrow on the spool.
Should I remove the battery before restringing?
Absolutely. Removing the battery eliminates any risk of accidental startup during maintenance, ensuring safe handling throughout the process.
How do I know if my spool cover is broken?
Cracks, missing tabs, or looseness indicate damage requiring replacement. A damaged cover compromises line guidance and exposes internal components to debris.
Why does my weed eater make noise after restringing?
Unusual sounds usually stem from improper spool installation, loose components, or binding line. Power down and recheck all assembly steps if abnormalities persist.
