Understanding Your Dewalt Brushless Weed Eater

Dewalt brushless weed eaters use advanced motor technology that delivers more power and longer runtime compared to brushed models. The brushless motor adjusts its speed and torque automatically based on the load, which means your trimmer responds instantly when you encounter thick grass or stubborn weeds. The cutting head typically features a dual-line bump-feed system, where two strands of trimmer line extend from a rotating spool. When the line wears short, you bump the head against the ground while the motor is running, which releases fresh line from the spool. Understanding this mechanism is essential because improper restringing can cause line tangles, uneven feeding, or complete failure to release line at all.

Key Components of the Cutting Head

The cutting head consists of several important parts. The outer housing protects the internal spool and keeps debris out. The spool holds the trimmer line and rotates freely when the motor is engaged. The line guide channels the string so it exits the head at the correct angle. The bump knob sits at the bottom of the head and allows you to manually release more line when needed. Finally, the locking mechanism secures the head to the drive shaft. Each of these components must be properly aligned during restringing to ensure smooth operation.

Why Restringing Matters

A dull or broken trimmer line dramatically reduces the efficiency of your weed eater. Instead of cleanly cutting grass and weeds, a worn line will drag, tear, or leave behind unsightly stubble. This not only makes your yard look unkempt but also forces the motor to work harder, draining the battery faster. Restringing restores cutting performance, extends the life of your tool, and prevents you from having to replace the entire cutting head assembly. Regular maintenance through restringing is far more cost-effective than buying a new trimmer or paying for professional servicing.

Tools and Materials You Will Need

Before starting the restringing process, gather the following items. Having everything on hand prevents interruptions and ensures a smooth workflow:

• New trimmer line compatible with your Dewalt model
• Small flathead screwdriver
• Phillips head screwdriver (if required)
• Clean cloth or rag
• Scissors or utility knife
• Work gloves for hand protection
• Owner’s manual (optional but helpful)

Using the correct type and gauge of trimmer line is critical. Refer to your owner’s manual or check the specifications printed on the old line to confirm compatibility.

Safety Precautions Before You Begin

Always prioritize safety when working with power tools. Follow these precautions before starting:

1. Remove the battery or disconnect the power source completely to prevent accidental startup.
2. Wear protective gear including safety glasses, work gloves, and closed-toe shoes.
3. Work in a clean, well-lit area away from children and pets.
4. Place the trimmer upside down on a stable surface or use a vise with padded jaws.
5. Keep small parts organized so they do not get lost during disassembly.

Failing to follow these safety steps can result in injury or damage to your equipment.

Identifying the Correct Trimmer Line

Dewalt brushless weed eaters use different line sizes depending on the model. Most residential models accept 0.065 inch, 0.080 inch, or 0.095 inch diameter line. Commercial-grade units may require thicker line for heavy-duty applications. The length of line needed also varies, but a standard replacement requires approximately 15 to 20 feet of new string. Always verify the specifications in your owner’s manual or on the manufacturer’s website. Using the wrong size can cause feeding problems, excessive wear on the spool, or damage to the line guide.

Step-by-Step Restringing Process

The following procedure applies to most Dewalt brushless weed eaters with a bump-feed cutting head. If your model differs significantly, consult the owner’s manual for specific instructions.

Removing the Old Line

1. Turn off the trimmer and remove the battery pack to eliminate any risk of accidental activation.
2. Flip the trimmer upside down and locate the bump knob at the base of the cutting head.
3. Twist the bump knob counterclockwise to release tension on the spool. Some models require you to press down while turning.
4. Pull the bump knob straight down to remove it completely from the housing.
5. Extract the old spool by lifting it upward. If it resists, gently wiggle it side to side while pulling.
6. Remove the remaining trimmer line from the spool and discard it. Check the spool for cracks, grooves, or debris buildup.

If the spool appears damaged, replace it rather than attempting to reuse it. A compromised spool can cause line tangles and feeding failures.

Preparing the New Line

1. Cut a length of new trimmer line approximately 18 feet long. This provides enough material for both sides of the head with some extra for knots and adjustments.
2. Find the center point of the line by folding it in half. Mark this midpoint with a piece of tape or by tying a small overhand knot.
3. Inspect the line for kinks or damage and discard any section that appears frayed or uneven.

Starting with a straight, undamaged line makes threading much easier and reduces the chance of future tangles.

Threading the Line Through the Head

1. Insert the midpoint of the line into the small hole located in the center of the spool. Push it through until about one inch protrudes from the opposite side.
2. Wrap the line around the spool in the direction indicated by the arrows molded into the plastic. Most spools have clockwise or counterclockwise markings. Winding in the wrong direction will cause the line to bind and tangle.
3. Keep tension on the line as you wind to prevent loose coils. Do not over-tighten, which can deform the spool.
4. Continue wrapping until you reach the end of the line, leaving approximately six inches free on each side.
5. Thread the two loose ends through the corresponding holes in the outer housing. These holes are typically located opposite each other near the edge of the head.
6. Pull the line through until the spool sits flush inside the housing with the line exiting evenly from both sides.

Ensure that the line exits the head at the correct angle. Misaligned line can cause vibration and poor cutting performance.

Securing and Testing the Line

1. Reinstall the spool by lowering it back into the housing until it sits level.
2. Place the bump knob back onto the base of the head and twist it clockwise until it is snug. Do not overtighten, as this can strip the threads.
3. Reinstall the battery and turn the trimmer on briefly to test the line feed.
4. Bump the head gently against a soft surface to confirm that fresh line extends smoothly from both sides.
5. Inspect the line length and trim any excess if it extends too far beyond the guard.

If the line fails to extend or tangles immediately, disassemble the head and repeat the process. Common issues include winding in the wrong direction, insufficient tension, or misaligned line ends.

Manual Feed vs. Automatic Feed Systems

Not all Dewalt brushless weed eaters use the same line feed mechanism. Understanding the difference helps you choose the right restringing approach:

• Bump Feed: The most common system. You manually bump the head to release more line. Requires careful spool winding and tension management.
• Automatic Feed (Auto Feed): The trimmer automatically releases line when it detects wear. These systems often use pre-wound spools that snap into place, eliminating the need for manual threading.
• Electric Feed: Some higher-end models use a button or trigger to extend line electronically. These typically require proprietary spools and cannot be manually restrung.

If your model uses an automatic feed system, check whether it accepts refill spools or requires a complete replacement head. Manual restringing is usually only necessary for bump-feed models.

Common Troubleshooting Scenarios

Even with careful attention to detail, issues can arise during restringing. Here are the most frequent problems and their solutions:

Line Tangles Inside the Head

Tangles usually occur when the line is wound in the wrong direction or when coils overlap during installation. To fix this, disassemble the head, unwind the line completely, and start over with proper winding technique. Always follow the directional arrows on the spool.

Line Does Not Feed Automatically

If the line fails to extend when you bump the head, check for blockages in the exit holes. Debris, dirt, or old line fragments can prevent smooth feeding. Clean the housing with a soft brush and compressed air if available.

Uneven Line Length on Both Sides

This happens when the line is not centered on the spool or when one side is wound tighter than the other. Remove the line, find the true center point, and rewind with even tension on both sides.

Spool Will Not Seat Properly

A spool that sits crooked or wobbles indicates incorrect alignment or debris in the housing. Clean the interior of the head with a cloth and ensure the spool drops in smoothly without forcing it.

Comparison of Trimmer Line Types

Choosing the right trimmer line can improve cutting performance and reduce wear on your Dewalt brushless weed eater. The table below compares the most common line types:

For most residential Dewalt brushless weed eater owners, a high-quality round or twist line in the 0.080 inch diameter provides an excellent balance of performance, durability, and cost.

Pro Reload Tips and Best Practices

Beyond the basic restringing process, these professional tips will help you achieve optimal results and extend the life of your trimmer:

• Use fresh line. Old or weather-damaged line is more prone to breaking and tangling. Store spare line in a cool, dry place.
• Maintain proper tension. Loose windings cause the line to bunch and feed unevenly. Apply consistent pressure while wrapping the spool.
• Clean the head regularly. Remove grass clippings, dirt, and debris from the housing after each use to prevent buildup that interferes with line feeding.
• Check the line guide. Ensure the exit holes are clear and aligned. A misaligned guide can cause the line to catch and fray.
• Trim line length. After restringing, adjust the line so it extends approximately one inch beyond the bottom of the guard. Too much line causes drag and battery drain.
• Store properly. When not in use for extended periods, remove the battery and store the trimmer in a dry location. This prevents moisture damage and line degradation.
• Keep a spare spool. Having a pre-wound spare spool saves time when you need to replace the line quickly.
• Monitor line wear. Replace the line before it becomes too short to feed properly. Waiting until the line is nearly gone often leads to emergency restringing sessions.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mistakes during restringing can lead to frustration and poor performance. Avoid these common errors:

• Winding in the wrong direction. Always check for directional arrows on the spool. Reversing the wind direction causes immediate tangles.
• Using the wrong line size. Installing line that is too thick or too thin prevents proper feeding and can damage internal components.
• Over-tightening the bump knob. Excessive force can strip the threads or deform the housing, making future maintenance difficult.
• Skipping the cleaning step. Failing to remove old debris from the head results in contamination that affects line movement.
• Not centering the line. Starting with an off-center line produces uneven feeding and premature wear on one side.
• Leaving too much line exposed. Excessive line length increases drag, drains the battery faster, and creates a safety hazard.
• Rushing the process. Taking time to follow each step carefully prevents the need for repeated disassembly and rework.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Often Should I Restring My Dewalt Brushless Weed Eater?

The frequency depends on usage and cutting conditions. If you trim thick grass, weeds, or abrasive surfaces like concrete, the line wears faster and may need replacement every few weeks. For light residential use on grass and soft weeds, the line can last several months. Monitor the line length regularly and restring when it becomes too short to feed properly or shows signs of fraying.

Can I Use Any Trimmer Line, or Do I Need a Specific Type?

While many trimmer lines are universal, it is best to match the diameter and length specified for your Dewalt model. Using line that is too thick can overload the motor and prevent proper feeding. Line that is too thin may break frequently and require constant replacement. Check your owner’s manual or the specifications printed on the original line for the correct size.

What Happens If I Restring the Line in the Wrong Direction?

Winding the line in the wrong direction causes it to tangle, bind, and fail to feed properly. The spool will not rotate smoothly, and the line may jam inside the head. If this occurs, disassemble the head, remove the tangled line, and restart the process following the directional arrows on the spool.

Is It Better to Use a Pre-Wound Spool or Manual Restringing?

Pre-wound spools save time and eliminate the risk of winding errors, making them ideal for users who want a quick replacement. However, they are typically more expensive than bulk line and may not be available for all models. Manual restringing gives you full control over the line type and amount, and it is more cost-effective for frequent users. Choose the method that best fits your needs and skill level.

Can I Restring the Trimmer While the Battery Is Installed?

No. Always remove the battery before beginning any maintenance work. This prevents accidental startup and protects you from potential injury. Even if the trigger is not pressed, the motor can activate unexpectedly if the battery is connected.

Why Is My Trimmer Line Feeding Too Fast or Too Slow?

Fast feeding usually indicates that the line is too short or that the spool has excessive tension. Slow feeding typically results from debris blockage, insufficient line length, or winding in the wrong direction. Disassemble the head, clean all components, and restring following the correct technique to resolve feeding issues.

Do I Need Special Tools to Restring a Dewalt Brushless Weed Eater?

In most cases, only basic tools are required, including a flathead screwdriver, scissors or a utility knife, and work gloves. Some models may require a Phillips head screwdriver to remove screws. No specialized equipment is necessary for standard restringing.

How Do I Know If My Cutting Head Needs to Be Replaced Entirely?

Inspect the outer housing for cracks, deep grooves, or deformation. If the spool has visible damage, warped edges, or damaged line guides, replace the entire head assembly. A compromised cutting head cannot be safely repaired and will continue to cause feeding problems even after restringing.
