Why You Need to Restring Your Poulan Weed Eater

Trimmer line is the consumable part of your weed eater that makes contact with vegetation during use, so it naturally wears down over time. Frayed, short, or broken line reduces cutting efficiency, forcing the weed eater’s engine to work harder to cut through grass and weeds. This extra strain can lead to reduced engine life, higher fuel consumption for gas models, and poor overall performance. In severe cases, a broken line can snap and fly off at high speed, creating a safety hazard for you and anyone nearby. Regularly restringing your Poulan weed eater ensures consistent cutting performance, extends the overall lifespan of the tool, and prevents unnecessary wear on internal components. For most users, restringing is needed every 1-3 months depending on usage frequency, and it takes less than 15 minutes to complete with basic tools.

Types of Poulan Weed Eater Trimmer Line

Poulan weed eaters are compatible with a range of trimmer line types and sizes, each designed for specific use cases. Choosing the right line for your yard and model will improve cutting performance and reduce wear on your tool.

The most common line types include:

• Round line: The standard, all-purpose option for most Poulan models. It has a smooth, circular cross-section that works well for trimming grass, thin weeds, and light vegetation around fences, walkways, and garden beds.
• Square line: Features sharp, angled edges that cut through thicker, tougher weeds and overgrowth more effectively than round line. It’s ideal for medium-duty use in yards with dense vegetation.
• Serrated line: Has small teeth along its length designed to saw through thick brush, woody stems, and heavy overgrowth. This is the best choice for heavy-duty use, but it wears out faster than round or square line when used on light vegetation.

Line diameter is also an important factor: smaller diameters are best for light-duty electric models and small yards, while larger diameters handle thick vegetation and large spaces. Most standard Poulan models use .095 inch line, but you should always confirm the recommended size in your user manual before purchasing replacement line.

Tools and Materials You’ll Need

Restringing a Poulan weed eater requires no special tools, and most of the items you need are likely already in your household toolkit. Gather the following before you start to avoid interruptions:

• Replacement trimmer line (correct diameter and type for your Poulan model)
• Phillips head screwdriver (for models with screws securing the trimmer head)
• Flat head screwdriver (for prying loose stuck spools or line)
• Work gloves (to protect your hands from sharp line edges)
• Safety glasses (to protect your eyes from flying debris)
• Tape measure or ruler (to cut line to the correct length)
• Wire cutters or heavy-duty scissors (to cut trimmer line cleanly)
• Clean rag (to wipe away grass and debris from the trimmer head)
• Optional: Trimmer line lubricant (to reduce friction and extend line life)

Having all these items ready before you start will make the restringing process fast and hassle-free.

Safety Precautions Before Starting

While restringing a weed eater is a low-risk task, taking basic safety precautions will prevent injuries and damage to your tool. Follow these steps before you begin work:

1. Disconnect the spark plug wire: For gas-powered Poulan models, pull the spark plug boot off the spark plug and tuck it away from the plug. This prevents the weed eater from starting accidentally while you’re working, which can cause serious injury.
2. Wear protective gear: Put on work gloves to avoid cuts from sharp trimmer line, and safety glasses to protect your eyes from flying debris when removing old line or cutting new line.
3. Work in a safe area: Choose a flat, well-lit workspace free of clutter, and keep children and pets away from the area. If you’re working on a gas model, avoid open flames and work in a well-ventilated space.
4. Let the tool cool down: If you recently used the weed eater, wait 10-15 minutes for the engine and exhaust to cool before touching internal parts to avoid burns.

Step-by-Step Guide to Restring a Poulan Weed Eater

Most standard Poulan weed eaters use a bump-feed trimmer head, which releases more line when you tap the bottom of the head on the ground while the tool is running. The restringing process is the same for nearly all Poulan bump-feed models, with minor variations based on single or dual-line heads. Follow these steps to restring your tool quickly and correctly.

Step 1: Prepare Your Workspace

Start by clearing a flat, stable workspace, such as a workbench or clean section of your garage floor. Lay down an old rag or towel to catch small parts, grass debris, and stray line pieces. Place the weed eater on the workspace with the trimmer head facing up, and disconnect the spark plug wire if you haven’t already done so. This setup prevents small parts from rolling away and eliminates the risk of accidental starting while you work.

Step 2: Remove the Old Trimmer Line

Locate the release knob or button on the bottom of the trimmer head. Press or twist this mechanism to release the spool from the head. If your Poulan model has a screw securing the trimmer head to the drive shaft, use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove it before taking off the spool. Once the spool is free, pull the old trimmer line off the spool, and discard it. If there is any leftover line stuck in the eyelets on the side of the head, use a flat head screwdriver to gently pry it out. Wipe the inside of the head with a clean rag to remove any grass or debris buildup.

Step 3: Measure and Cut the New Trimmer Line

Most standard Poulan dual-line bump-feed heads require two equal lengths of line, each 8-10 feet long. Single-line heads typically require one 10-12 foot length of line. Check your user manual for the exact recommended length for your model, as this varies slightly between different Poulan designs. Use a tape measure to cut the line to the correct length with wire cutters or heavy scissors, making sure both pieces (for dual-line heads) are exactly the same length to ensure even feeding. Cut the ends at a slight angle to make it easier to thread them through the head eyelets.

Step 4: Load the Line Into the Trimmer Head

Start by folding the new line in half (for dual-line heads) to find the center point. For dual-line heads: insert the folded end of the line into the slot in the center of the spool, then wind each line around its respective spool arm in the direction marked by the arrows on the spool (almost always clockwise for Poulan models). Leave 4-6 inches of line sticking out of each eyelet on the side of the head. For single-line heads: insert one end of the line into the center slot of the spool, wind it around the spool in the indicated direction, and leave 6-8 inches of line sticking out of the single eyelet. Make sure the line sits evenly in the spool grooves and does not cross over itself, as this will cause tangles and feeding issues.

Step 5: Reassemble the Poulan Weed Eater

Once the line is loaded onto the spool, align the tabs on the spool with the slots in the trimmer head, then push the spool into the head until it clicks into place. If your model uses a retaining ring to hold the spool in place, snap the ring back around the spool until it is secure. If you removed a screw from the trimmer head earlier, screw it back into the drive shaft, tightening it until it is snug but not overtightened, as this can crack the head or damage the threads. Finally, reconnect the spark plug wire to the spark plug, making sure it is seated firmly to ensure proper engine operation.

Step 6: Test the Trimmer for Proper Function

Take the weed eater to a clear, open area away from people, pets, and obstacles. Start the engine (pull the starter cord for gas models, press the trigger for electric models) and let it run for a few seconds. Tap the bottom of the trimmer head gently on the ground 2-3 times to activate the bump-feed mechanism and release more line. Check that the line extends evenly from both sides of the head, cuts through grass and weeds smoothly, and does not get stuck or tangled. If the line does not extend, turn off the weed eater and check that you loaded the line in the correct direction and that the spool is seated fully in the head. If the line is tangled, remove the spool and rewind the line, making sure it is not crossed.

Tips for Extending Trimmer Line Life

With proper care, you can extend the life of your trimmer line and reduce how often you need to restring your Poulan weed eater. Follow these best practices to get the most out of your line:

• Use the exact line size and type recommended for your Poulan model. Using line that is too thick or too thin will cause premature wear and poor performance.
• Avoid cutting against concrete, rocks, metal, or other hard surfaces, as this frays and dulls the line quickly. If you need to trim near these surfaces, use a lower engine speed to reduce friction.
• Wipe the trimmer line clean after each use to remove grass sap, dirt, and debris that can cause corrosion and make the line brittle over time.
• Store your weed eater in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Extreme heat and UV exposure will make the line dry out and break more easily.
• Apply a small amount of trimmer line lubricant to the line periodically to reduce friction and heat buildup during use, which slows wear.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Restringing

Even experienced DIYers can make simple errors when restringing a weed eater that lead to poor performance or damage to the tool. Avoid these common mistakes to make the process smoother:

• Using the wrong line size or type: Installing line that is too thick can strain the engine and damage the trimmer head, while line that is too thin will break easily and not cut effectively. Always check your user manual for the recommended specifications before buying replacement line.
• Winding the line in the wrong direction: Most Poulan spools have arrows indicating the correct winding direction (usually clockwise). Winding the line backward will prevent the bump-feed mechanism from working and cause frequent tangles.
• Overfilling the spool: Winding too much line onto the spool will cause it to bunch up and tangle, preventing it from feeding properly. Stick to the recommended line length and leave the correct amount of line sticking out of the eyelets.
• Skipping the spark plug disconnect: Failing to disconnect the spark plug wire on gas models can lead to accidental starting while you’re working, which can cause serious cuts or other injuries.
• Overtightening screws: Tightening the trimmer head screw too much can crack the plastic head or strip the threads on the drive shaft. Tighten the screw until it is snug, then give it a quarter turn more at most.

Poulan Trimmer Line Size Comparison

Choosing the right trimmer line size for your Poulan weed eater is critical for optimal performance and tool longevity. The table below outlines the most common line sizes, their use cases, and compatible Poulan models to help you select the right option for your needs.

Always confirm the recommended line size for your specific model in your user manual, as some older or specialty Poulan models may have unique requirements.

Troubleshooting Common Restringing Issues

If you run into problems after restringing your Poulan weed eater, you likely made a small error during the process that is easy to fix. Here are solutions to the most common issues:

• Line won’t extend when you bump the head: First, check that you wound the line in the correct direction (follow the arrows on the spool). Next, make sure the spool is seated fully in the trimmer head and clicks into place. If the line is too long, it may bunch up inside the head; cut 1-2 inches off each end of the line and test again.
• Line keeps tangling: Tangles are usually caused by overfilling the spool, crossing the lines during winding, or using line that is too long. Remove the spool, unwind the line, and rewind it following the direction arrows, making sure the lines do not cross and you only use the recommended length.
• Trimmer cuts unevenly: Check that both lines (for dual-line heads) are the same length, and that the line is not frayed or damaged. Also, clean out any grass or debris clogging the bottom of the trimmer head, as this can prevent the line from extending evenly.
• Line breaks frequently during use: This is often a sign you are using the wrong line size for your model, or you are cutting against hard surfaces like concrete or rocks. Switch to the line size recommended in your manual, and avoid cutting near hard obstacles. If the line is old and brittle, replace it with fresh line.
• Trimmer head won’t spin: Check that the spool is seated correctly and the retaining ring is snapped into place. Look for tangled line jammed between the spool and the head, and remove any debris blocking the spool’s movement.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I restring my Poulan weed eater?

The frequency of restringing depends on usage and the type of vegetation you cut. For light use, such as trimming grass once a week in a small yard, you will need to restring every 2-3 months. For heavy use, such as cutting thick weeds weekly in a large yard, restring every 4-6 weeks. Inspect the line before each use: if it is frayed, shorter than 3 inches, or broken, replace it immediately.

Can I use third-party trimmer line on my Poulan weed eater?

Yes, as long as the line matches the diameter and type recommended in your user manual. Many third-party brands offer high-quality line that performs as well as OEM Poulan line at a lower cost. Avoid cheap, low-quality line that frays easily, as it will wear out faster and damage your trimmer head.

What do I do if my Poulan weed eater has a fixed-line head?

Fixed-line heads do not have a removable spool. To restring these, locate the hole at the bottom of the head, insert the end of the new line through the hole, pull it through until 6-8 inches stick out, then wind the line around the internal spool in the direction of the arrow printed on the head. Pull the line tight and cut off excess. If the internal spool breaks, you will need to replace the entire head assembly.

Why does my trimmer line keep getting tangled after restringing?

Tangles are almost always caused by one of three avoidable errors: winding the line in the wrong direction, overfilling the spool, or using line that is too long. Double-check the direction arrows on your spool, use only the recommended line length for your model, and avoid overfilling. For dual-line heads, make sure the two lines do not cross when inserted into the eyelets.

Do I need to wear safety gear when restringing?

Yes, trimmer line is extremely sharp and can cause deep cuts if it slips. Always wear work gloves and safety glasses when handling line and working on the trimmer head. For gas models, always disconnect the spark plug wire to prevent accidental starting, which can cause serious injury.
