Understanding the Spool System
Types of Spools
Craftsman trimmers typically use either a bump‑feed spool or a fixed‑line spool. Bump‑feed models release line when you tap the head on the ground, while fixed‑line spools require manual advancement. Identifying which type you have is the first step because the winding direction and line capacity differ. Most modern Craftsman units feature a dual‑line bump head that holds two strands of line wound in opposite directions.
Line Specifications
Line diameter matters. Common sizes for Craftsman weed eaters range from 0.065 inch for light residential work to 0.095 inch for heavy‑duty brush clearing. Using a line that is too thick can jam the head; too thin and it will break prematurely. Check the owner’s manual or the label on the spool housing for the recommended gauge and maximum length. Quality line with a square or star‑shaped cross‑section cuts cleaner than round line and resists welding to the head.
Tools and Materials Needed
Gather the following items before you begin: a replacement trimmer line of the correct gauge and length, a pair of heavy‑duty scissors or a line cutter, a clean rag, and a small flat‑head screwdriver (some models use a retaining screw). If your spool has a removable cap, a pair of needle‑nose pliers can help grip it. Having a workbench or a sturdy table at waist height reduces strain and keeps the spool from rolling away.
Safety Precautions
Always disconnect the power source before servicing the trimmer. For gas models, remove the spark plug wire; for electric or battery units, unplug the cord or remove the battery pack. Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from stray line fragments and gloves to prevent cuts. Keep the work area clear of children and pets. Never attempt to wind line while the engine is running or the motor is energized.
Step-by-Step Respooling Guide
Remove the Spool
Locate the spool release button or tabs on the trimmer head. Press the tabs simultaneously and pull the spool straight out. If a retaining screw is present, loosen it with the screwdriver first. Set the spool on a clean surface and note the orientation of any arrows printed on the housing; they indicate the winding direction.
Clean the Spool Housing
Use the rag to wipe away grass clippings, dirt, and old line fragments from the spool cavity and the drive shaft. Debris can cause uneven feeding or jam the bump mechanism. Inspect the spring and the eyelets for wear; replace them if they appear cracked or deformed.
Measure and Cut Line
Unroll the new line and measure the length recommended by the manufacturer—typically 15 to 25 feet for a dual‑line head. Cut the line cleanly with scissors or a line cutter. If your spool uses two separate strands, cut two equal lengths. Avoid stretching the line while measuring; tension can cause it to shrink after winding.
Wind the Line onto the Spool
Insert one end of the line into the anchor hole or slot on the spool. Follow the directional arrows: wind the line tightly and evenly, keeping each turn snug against the previous one. For dual‑line spools, wind the first strand in the indicated direction, then repeat with the second strand in the opposite direction. Leave about 6 inches of line protruding from each eyelet for the initial feed.
Reinstall the Spool
Align the spool with the drive shaft, ensuring the protruding line ends pass through the eyelets. Push the spool back into the head until the tabs click or the retaining screw seats. Tighten the screw if applicable. Double‑check that the spool rotates freely and that the line is not pinched.
Test the Trimmer
Reconnect the power source. Start the trimmer and let it run at idle. Tap the head lightly on grass or a soft surface to engage the bump feed. The line should advance smoothly. If the line does not feed, re‑examine the winding direction and ensure the eyelets are clear.
Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
One frequent error is winding the line in the wrong direction, which prevents the bump feed from releasing line. Always follow the arrows on the spool. Another mistake is over‑filling the spool; excess line can bind and cause the motor to stall. Trim the line to the specified length before winding. Using the wrong gauge line is also common—too thick a line jams the head, too thin breaks quickly. Finally, neglecting to clean the housing leads to debris buildup that interferes with line advance. A quick wipe‑down each time you respool eliminates this issue.
Tips for Longer Line Life
Store spare line in a cool, dry place to prevent UV degradation. When cutting, avoid forcing the trimmer into thick woody stems; let the line do the work at its rated speed. Periodically inspect the line for fraying and replace it before it snaps completely. If you frequently tackle heavy brush, consider upgrading to a heavier gauge line or a commercial‑grade spool designed for higher impact. Lubricating the spool shaft with a light silicone spray once a season reduces friction and extends the life of both the spool and the drive mechanism.
Comparison Table: Craftsman Spool Models
| Model | Line Capacity (ft) | Recommended Gauge (in) | Feed Type | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CMXGTAMD30SA | 20 | 0.080 | Bump‑feed dual line | Residential lawn trimming |
| CMXGTAMD25SA | 15 | 0.065 | Bump‑feed single line | Light edging and detail work |
| CMXGTAMD35SA | 25 | 0.095 | Fixed‑line heavy duty | Brush clearing and thick weeds |
| CMXGTAMD40SA | 30 | 0.080 | Bump‑feed dual line | Large property maintenance |
Troubleshooting After Respooling
If the trimmer vibrates excessively, the line may be unevenly wound; remove the spool and rewind with consistent tension. When the line fails to advance, verify that the eyelets are not clogged and that the bump knob moves freely. A sputtering engine on gas models can indicate a clogged air filter rather than a line issue, but a jammed spool can also load the engine. For battery units, a sudden power drop may mean the battery is low; recharge before concluding the spool is at fault. In all cases, consult the owner’s manual for model‑specific diagnostic codes.
Maintenance Schedule
Inspect the spool and line before each use. Replace the line whenever it appears worn, typically after 8–10 hours of cutting time. Clean the spool housing monthly during the growing season. Lubricate the drive shaft and spool bearings every 25 hours of operation. Check the bump knob spring for fatigue annually. Following this schedule keeps the trimmer running smoothly and reduces the frequency of full respooling sessions.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I respool my Craftsman weed eater?
Respool when the line is worn down to less than 2 inches or when cutting performance drops noticeably. For average residential use, this occurs roughly every 8–10 hours of operation.
Can I use any brand of trimmer line?
You can use any brand as long as the diameter matches the manufacturer’s specification. Quality varies, so choose a reputable line with a shaped cross‑section for better cutting efficiency.
Why does the line keep breaking after I respool?
Common causes include using line that is too thin for the task, winding the line too loosely, or hitting hard objects like rocks and curbs. Ensure you follow the recommended gauge and wind tightly.
Do I need to replace the spool itself?
Only replace the spool if the plastic is cracked, the eyelets are deformed, or the spring no longer returns the bump knob. Otherwise, simply rewinding fresh line is sufficient.
Is there a difference between gas and electric models when respooling?
The winding procedure is identical; the only difference is the power‑disconnection step. Gas models require spark‑plug wire removal, while electric models need the cord unplugged or battery removed.
Conclusion
Mastering how to respool a Craftsman weed eater empowers you to keep your trimmer in peak condition without professional help. By understanding the spool type, selecting the correct line gauge, and following the step‑by‑step winding process, you’ll achieve reliable line feed and clean cuts every time. Avoiding common mistakes—such as wrong winding direction or over‑filling—extends both line and spool life. Regular maintenance, guided by the schedule above, further reduces downtime. With these practices in place, your Craftsman trimmer will stay ready for any yard‑care challenge.
