Understanding Your Weed Eater Head Components

Weed eater heads come in two primary designs: bump feed and automatic feed, each with slightly different internal components. Bump feed heads require you to tap the bottom of the head on the ground to release more line, while automatic feed heads use a small motor to advance line automatically as you trim, eliminating the need for tapping. Both types share most core parts, which you will interact with during disassembly:

• Trimmer line: The flexible, rotating string that cuts grass and weeds. Most models use 0.080” to 0.155” diameter line, depending on the trimmer’s power.
• Spool: The plastic or metal cylinder that holds the wound trimmer line. The spool rotates as the trimmer operates, feeding line out as it wears down.
• Head housing: The outer casing that holds all internal components together. It’s usually made of durable plastic, though some heavy-duty models use aluminum.
• Gear drive: A set of small plastic or metal gears that transfer power from the trimmer shaft to the spool, causing it to rotate. All automatic feed heads have exposed gear drives, while some bump feed models hide them inside the housing.
• Retaining clip/ring: A small metal or plastic piece that holds the spool in place inside the housing and secures the head to the trimmer shaft.
• Line feed mechanism (automatic feed only): A small motor and set of gears that advance the line automatically without user input.

Knowing these parts will help you identify components as you disassemble your head, and make it easier to troubleshoot issues or replace worn parts later.

Tools and Safety Gear You’ll Need

Disassembling a weed eater head requires only basic hand tools and minimal safety gear, most of which you likely already have in your garage:

Safety Gear

• Safety glasses: Protect your eyes from flying grass clippings, snapped line, and small debris that may dislodge during disassembly.
• Work gloves: Prevent cuts from sharp trimmer line and rough plastic edges on the head housing.
• Closed-toe shoes: Protect your feet if you drop small parts or tools while working.

Required Tools

• Flathead and Phillips screwdrivers (most models use one or the other; some use Torx bits, which you can purchase cheaply at any hardware store)
• Needle-nose pliers for removing small retaining clips and pulling out stuck spools
• Wire cutters for trimming excess line
• Small brush or old toothbrush for cleaning out debris
• Rubber mallet (optional, for loosening stuck parts without cracking plastic)

Note that many newer weed eater models feature quick-release mechanisms that require no tools to remove the head from the shaft, but you’ll still need basic tools to disassemble the head internals.

Step-by-Step Guide to Disassembling a Bump Feed Weed Eater Head

Bump feed heads are the most common type of weed eater head, and they are also the simplest to disassemble. Follow these steps to safely take apart your bump feed head:

Pre-Disassembly Prep

Taking a few minutes to prepare before you start will make the process faster and reduce the risk of losing parts or damaging components:

1. Disconnect the spark plug wire on gas-powered trimmers, or remove the battery from cordless electric models, to prevent accidental startup while you work.
2. Lay the trimmer on a flat, stable surface with the head facing up to keep small parts from rolling away.
3. Use wire cutters to trim any remaining line as close to the head as possible to remove excess length and make it easier to access internal components.
4. Wipe away loose grass, dirt, and debris from the outside of the head with a dry cloth to prevent it from falling into the housing when you open it.

Removing the Head from the Trimmer Shaft

1. Locate the retaining clip or threaded collar at the base of the head where it attaches to the trimmer shaft. Most models use a small metal clip that fits into a groove on the shaft, while others use a plastic or metal collar that screws onto the shaft.
2. If your model uses a retaining clip, use needle-nose pliers to gently pry the clip out of its groove. If it uses a threaded collar, turn it counterclockwise to loosen it. Be careful not to lose the clip, as it is small and easy to drop.
3. Once the clip or collar is removed, pull the head straight off the shaft. If it is stuck, gently wiggle it side to side—never yank it, as this can damage the shaft or the drive gear inside the head.
4. Set the head on a clean surface, and set aside any small washers or spacers that came off with it, as you will need to reinstall them during reassembly.

Disassembling the Head Internals

1. Flip the head over so the bottom (where line feeds out) is facing up. Locate the 2-4 small screws holding the two halves of the head housing together, usually on the bottom or side of the casing.
2. Use the appropriate screwdriver to remove all screws, and place them in a small container to avoid losing them.
3. Gently separate the two halves of the housing. If they are stuck, use a flathead screwdriver to carefully pry them apart at the seam—avoid using excessive force, as the plastic housing can crack easily.
4. Once the housing is open, you will see the spool inside. Note the direction the line is wound and the orientation of the spool before removing it, so you can reinstall it correctly later.
5. If the spool is held in place by a retaining clip or small spring, use needle-nose pliers to remove the clip or spring first, then lift the spool out of the housing.
6. If the spool is stuck, tap the edge of the housing gently with a rubber mallet to loosen it. Never use a metal hammer, as it can crack the plastic housing or spool.
7. Once the spool is removed, you can access the gear drive (if your model has one) and line feed mechanism. Clean out any built-up grass, dirt, or sap with a small brush, and wipe all parts with a dry cloth before replacing parts or reassembling.

Step-by-Step Guide to Disassembling an Automatic Feed Weed Eater Head

Automatic feed heads work similarly to bump feed models, but they include a small motor and additional components to advance line without user input. The disassembly process is nearly identical, with a few extra precautions for electrical parts:

Pre-Disassembly and Head Removal

Follow the same pre-disassembly steps as for bump feed heads: disconnect power, lay the trimmer flat, trim excess line, and wipe away external debris. Remove the head from the shaft using the same process described for bump feed models.

Disassembling the Head Internals

1. Locate the screws holding the housing together. Automatic feed heads often have 4-6 screws, some of which may be hidden under small plastic caps that you need to pry off with a flathead screwdriver.
2. Remove all screws and gently separate the housing halves. Be careful not to pull on any wires connecting the feed motor to the trimmer’s power system, as they are fragile and can break easily.
3. If you need to access the motor or gears, disconnect the small wire connector from the feed motor to give yourself more room to work.
4. Remove the retaining clip or spring holding the spool in place, then lift the spool out. If it is stuck, tap the housing gently with a rubber mallet to loosen it.
5. Clean all internal parts with a small brush and dry cloth. Avoid using water or harsh chemicals, as they can damage the motor or plastic components.
6. If you are replacing the feed motor or gears, note how the old parts are connected before removing them to ensure the new parts are installed correctly.

Use this comparison to understand what to expect when disassembling your specific head type, and to troubleshoot any issues you encounter during the process.

Tips for Smooth Disassembly and Reassembly

Follow these tips to make the process faster, avoid damaging parts, and ensure your head works perfectly when you put it back together:

• Take photos as you work: Snap a quick photo of the head before removing each part, so you have a clear reference for how everything fits together during reassembly. This is especially helpful for automatic feed heads with multiple small components.
• Use a magnetic parts tray: Small screws, clips, and washers are easy to lose. A magnetic tray keeps them in one place and prevents them from rolling away while you work.
• Never force parts: If a spool or housing half is stuck, tap it gently with a rubber mallet rather than prying it with a screwdriver. Forcing parts can crack plastic or break internal components, leading to costly repairs.
• Clean all parts thoroughly: Built-up grass, sap, and dirt are the most common cause of jams and poor performance. Use a small brush and dry cloth to clean every nook and cranny of the head and spool before reassembling.
• Lubricate moving parts lightly: Apply a small amount of silicone-based lubricant to the spool shaft and gear drive before reassembling to reduce friction and extend the life of the head. Avoid petroleum-based lubricants, as they can degrade plastic over time.
• Test the head before reinstalling: Once reassembled, connect power and test the line feed mechanism to make sure it works properly before attaching the head back to the trimmer shaft. This saves you from having to remove the head again if something is misaligned.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Avoid these common errors to prevent damage to your trimmer and reduce the risk of injury:

• Forgetting to disconnect power before starting: This is the most dangerous mistake, as it can lead to accidental startup and serious injury. Always disconnect the spark plug or remove the battery before touching any internal components.
• Losing small parts: Retaining clips, screws, and washers are tiny and easy to drop. Work in a well-lit area, use a magnetic tray, and keep small parts in a sealed container while you work.
• Using the wrong replacement parts: Not all weed eater heads are universal. Make sure the spool, line, and other replacement parts are compatible with your specific trimmer model. Check your owner’s manual or the part number printed on the old spool before buying new parts.
• Over-tightening screws when reassembling: Plastic housing can crack if screws are tightened too much. Tighten screws until they are snug, but don’t apply excessive force.
• Skipping cleaning before reassembly: Even small amounts of grass or dirt can cause jams and poor line feed later. Take a few extra minutes to clean all parts thoroughly before putting the head back together.
• Installing the spool backwards: Most spools have a specific direction they need to face, and line is wound in a specific direction. If you install the spool backwards or wind the line the wrong way, the line won’t feed properly. Refer to your owner’s manual or the markings on the spool for guidance.

How to Maintain Your Weed Eater Head After Disassembly

Disassembling your weed eater head is the perfect time to perform routine maintenance that will extend its life and improve performance:

1. Inspect the spool for damage: Check for cracks, warping, or worn edges. If the spool is damaged, replace it immediately, as a broken spool can cause line to jam or break during use.
2. Check the gear drive: If your model has an exposed gear drive, inspect the teeth for wear or stripping. If the gears are damaged, you can replace the gear assembly separately on most models, rather than replacing the entire head.
3. Use the correct trimmer line: Always use line with the diameter recommended by your trimmer’s manufacturer. Line that is too thick will strain the motor and cause jams, while line that is too thin will break easily and wear out quickly.
4. Lubricate moving parts regularly: Apply a small amount of silicone lubricant to the spool shaft and gear drive every 10-15 hours of use to keep parts moving smoothly and reduce wear.
5. Store properly: Keep your trimmer in a dry, cool place when not in use to prevent rust on metal components and degradation of plastic parts. Drain the gas tank on gas-powered models before long-term storage to prevent fuel from gumming up internal components.

Most manufacturers recommend disassembling and cleaning the head every 20-30 hours of use, or more often if you regularly cut wet, thick grass that builds up debris quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I disassemble a weed eater head without removing it from the shaft?

Yes, in most cases you can disassemble the head while it’s still attached to the trimmer shaft, especially if you only need to replace the line or clean out minor jams. To do this, disconnect power first, then remove the screws holding the housing together as you would if the head was removed. The only limitation is that some internal parts, like the gear drive or feed motor, may be harder to access while the head is attached to the shaft. For full disassembly or replacing internal components, it’s easier and safer to remove the head from the shaft first.

How often should I disassemble my weed eater head for cleaning?

Most manufacturers recommend disassembling and cleaning the head every 20 to 30 hours of use, or more frequently if you regularly cut wet, thick, or sticky grass that builds up debris quickly. If you notice reduced line feed, inconsistent cutting, or strange noises coming from the head, clean it immediately even if you haven’t hit the recommended usage interval. Regular cleaning prevents jams, reduces wear on internal components, and extends the life of your trimmer head by several seasons.

What if the spool is stuck and won’t come out?

A stuck spool is usually caused by built-up grass, sap, or rust that’s binding it to the housing. First, spray a small amount of penetrating oil (like WD-40) around the edge of the spool where it meets the housing, and let it sit for 5-10 minutes to loosen the debris. Then, tap the edge of the housing gently with a rubber mallet to dislodge the spool. If it’s still stuck, use needle-nose pliers to grip the edge of the spool and pull it straight out—don’t twist it, as that can break the spool or damage the housing. Avoid using excessive force, as that can crack the plastic housing.

Do I need to replace the entire head if the internal gears are broken?

Not always. Many popular weed eater models have replaceable gear drive assemblies that you can purchase separately from the manufacturer or third-party parts suppliers. Check your owner’s manual to see if your model has a replaceable gear set. If the gears are not replaceable, or if the housing itself is cracked, you will need to replace the entire head. In most cases, replacing a gear drive is far cheaper than buying a new trimmer head, and it’s a simple repair once you’ve disassembled the head.
