Understanding Your Dewalt Weed Eater
Types of Cutting Heads
Dewalt offers several cutting head designs, including the fixed‑line head, the bump‑feed head, and the automatic‑feed head. Fixed‑line heads require manual line replacement each time the line wears out. Bump‑feed heads advance new line when you tap the head on the ground, while automatic‑feed heads use a spring‑loaded mechanism to dispense line as it shortens. Knowing which head your model uses determines the exact replacement procedure.
Line Diameter and Material
Most Dewalt trimmers accept line diameters ranging from 0.065 inch to 0.095 inch. Thicker line cuts heavier weeds but puts more strain on the motor. The line material also matters: standard nylon works for general grass, while reinforced or serrated line handles tough brush and thick stems. Always consult the owner’s manual for the maximum recommended diameter.
Tools and Materials Needed
Before you begin, gather the following items to ensure a smooth replacement:
- Replacement trimmer line (correct diameter and length)
- Protective gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flat‑head screwdriver (for some head models)
- Clean cloth or shop towel
- Small container for loose line pieces
Having everything within reach prevents interruptions and reduces the chance of losing small parts.
Safety Precautions
Safety should never be an afterthought. Follow these precautions every time you service the trimmer:
- Disconnect the battery or unplug the unit from the power source.
- Allow the motor to cool completely if it has been running.
- Wear gloves and eye protection to guard against sharp line ends and debris.
- Work on a stable, flat surface to keep the tool from rolling.
- Keep children and pets away from the work area.
These steps minimize the risk of accidental starts and protect you from flying line fragments.
Step‑by‑Step Guide to Replace String
The following ordered list covers the standard replacement process for a bump‑feed head, which is the most common Dewalt configuration.
- Remove the spool cover. Press the release tabs or unscrew the retaining knob, then lift the cover off.
- Take out the empty spool. Pull the spool straight out; note the orientation of any guide notches.
- Clean the head interior. Wipe away grass clippings, dirt, and old line fragments with a cloth.
- Cut the new line to length. Most models require two equal lengths of 10–12 feet each. Measure and cut with scissors or a utility knife.
- Insert the line into the anchor holes. Feed one end of each line piece into the designated anchor slots on the spool, following the directional arrows.
- Wind the line evenly. Turn the spool in the direction indicated (usually clockwise) while keeping tension, ensuring the line lays flat without overlapping.
- Leave a short tail. Leave about 6 inches of line protruding from each side of the spool for the feed mechanism.
- Reinstall the spool. Place the spool back into the head, aligning the notches with the guide pins.
- Replace the cover. Snap or screw the cover back into place securely.
- Test the feed. Reconnect power, start the trimmer, and gently bump the head on the ground to verify line advancement.
Following these steps ensures the line is seated correctly and feeds reliably during operation.
Reloading the Spool: Quick Reload Method
Some Dewalt models feature a quick‑reload spool that eliminates the need to disassemble the head. To use this feature:
- Press the quick‑release button on the side of the head.
- Pull the spent spool out; the new spool slides in along the same track.
- Align the line guides and press until you hear a click.
- Trim any excess line to the recommended length.
This method reduces downtime dramatically, especially on job sites where speed matters.
Comparing Line Types
| Line Type | Diameter Range | Best For | Durability | Typical Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Round Nylon | 0.065–0.095 in | General grass and light weeds | Moderate | Low |
| Twisted (Helical) | 0.080–0.095 in | Thicker weeds, light brush | High | Medium |
| Serrated / Blade‑Edge | 0.080–0.105 in | Heavy brush, small saplings | Very High | Higher |
| Co‑Polymer Reinforced | 0.065–0.095 in | Mixed conditions, longer life | High | Medium‑High |
Choose the line that matches the vegetation you most often encounter. Using a line that is too thick for the motor can cause overheating, while a line that is too thin may break frequently.
Tips for Optimal Cutting Performance
- Keep the line length within the manufacturer’s recommended range; overly long line reduces cutting speed.
- Store replacement line in a cool, dry place to prevent moisture absorption, which can make the line brittle.
- Periodically inspect the spool for cracks or warping; a damaged spool feeds unevenly.
- Clean the cutting head after each use to prevent grass buildup that can impede line feed.
- Use a line gauge or the built‑in measuring marks on the spool to ensure consistent winding tension.
Applying these habits extends line life and keeps the trimmer cutting cleanly.
Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
- Over‑winding the spool. Excessive line causes binding. Wind only the amount specified in the manual.
- Using the wrong diameter. Too thick a line strains the motor; too thin breaks easily. Verify the spec before purchase.
- Ignoring directional arrows. Winding opposite the indicated direction leads to feed failure.
- Forgetting to leave a tail. Without a tail, the bump‑feed mechanism cannot pull new line.
- Skipping the cleaning step. Debris inside the head can jam the feed spring.
Awareness of these pitfalls helps you complete the job correctly the first time.
Maintenance After String Replacement
After installing new line, perform a quick maintenance check to keep the trimmer in top shape:
- Inspect the air filter and clean or replace if dirty.
- Check the battery contacts (cordless models) for corrosion.
- Lubricate the gear drive if the manual recommends it.
- Run the trimmer at low speed for a minute to confirm smooth line feed.
- Store the tool in a dry location, preferably hanging to avoid pressure on the head.
Regular post‑replacement care prevents premature wear and ensures the next reload goes just as smoothly.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Even with careful installation, problems can arise. Here are the most frequent symptoms and fixes:
- Line does not advance. Verify the spool is seated correctly, the line tails are long enough, and the feed spring is not broken.
- Line breaks immediately. Check for sharp edges on the spool or guide eyelets; replace the spool if damaged.
- Excessive vibration. Ensure the line is wound evenly and the spool is not warped.
- Motor overheats. Confirm you are using the correct line diameter; reduce load by cutting in shorter passes.
- Head won’t stay closed. Inspect the retaining knob or tabs for wear; replace the cover if necessary.
Addressing these issues promptly keeps downtime to a minimum.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I replace the trimmer line?
Replace the line whenever it becomes shorter than the minimum effective length (usually about 2–3 inches) or when you notice a drop in cutting performance. Heavy use may require replacement every few hours, while light residential use might only need it once per season.
Can I use any brand of trimmer line in my Dewalt weed eater?
Yes, as long as the line matches the diameter and type recommended for your specific model. Using a reputable brand ensures consistent quality and reduces the risk of breakage.
Why does the line keep getting stuck in the head?
Sticking is usually caused by overwinding, debris inside the head, or a worn feed spring. Clean the head, wind the correct amount of line, and inspect the spring for damage.
Is it necessary to wear gloves when replacing the line?
Gloves protect your hands from sharp line ends and any residual debris. They also improve grip when handling the spool and cover.
Can I reload the spool without removing the head from the trimmer?
On models equipped with a quick‑reload spool, you can swap the spool without detaching the head. For standard bump‑feed heads, removal of the cover and spool is required.
