How to Replace Line on Homelite Weed Eater? Homelite Line

Introduction

If you searched for “How to Replace Line on Homelite Weed Eater?” you probably have a trimmer head that is empty, jammed, or feeding poorly. Replacing Homelite line is a simple maintenance task, but the exact method depends on the type of cutting head your model uses. Most Homelite weed eaters use a bump-feed head with a removable spool, while some models use a single-line head or a fixed-line style head that loads through eyelets.

The good news is that you can usually finish the job with a few basic tools, the correct trimmer line diameter, and about 10 to 20 minutes. This guide walks you through the safest way to remove the head, choose the right line, wind or insert it correctly, reassemble the trimmer, and troubleshoot common feeding problems.

Safety, Tools, and Line Selection

Before replacing line on a Homelite weed eater, make the trimmer impossible to start accidentally. For a gas Homelite trimmer, turn off the engine, let it cool, and disconnect the spark plug boot. For a corded electric model, unplug it. For a battery-powered model, remove the battery. Wear gloves and eye protection, because trimmer line can snap back, and debris inside the head may be sharp.

Set the weed eater on a flat surface with the cutting head easy to reach. If the head is dirty, grass-packed, or hot from recent use, wait until it is cool and wipe away loose debris before opening it. This prevents dirt from falling into the spool area and makes the head easier to inspect.

• Correct replacement line: Use the diameter and type recommended for your Homelite model.
• Line cutter or sharp scissors: A clean cut prevents frayed ends from catching in the eyelets.
• Gloves and eye protection: These protect your hands and eyes during removal and testing.
• Clean rag or soft brush: Use it to remove grass, old line fragments, and dirt.
• Flat screwdriver or locking pin: Some heads require the shaft to be held while the head is loosened.
• Owner’s manual: This is the best source for line size, head type, and loading capacity.

Line size matters. Many Homelite trimmers use common diameters such as 0.065 in., 0.080 in., or 0.095 in., but your exact model may differ. Line that is too large can jam the head or overload the engine. Line that is too small may break quickly or feed unevenly. Use round nylon line for general grass, or a twisted or serrated line if your head allows it and you cut thicker weeds.

Identify Your Homelite Trimmer Head

Before removing parts, identify the type of Homelite trimmer head you have. The loading method is different for each style, and forcing the wrong part can crack the spool or bump knob.

• Dual-line bump head: This is the most common style. It has two cutting lines, two exit eyelets, a removable spool, and a bump knob on the bottom.
• Single-line bump head: This head uses one length of line and usually has one exit eyelet. It is often found on lighter-duty trimmers.
• Fixed-line or Speed Load-style head: This style may not require spool removal. Pre-cut line is inserted through eyelets, then the knob is twisted or locked to hold the line.
• Manual-load head: Some older or simpler heads require you to stop the trimmer and pull line through by hand.

If you are unsure, look for arrows, labels, or diagrams molded into the spool or head. You can also check the model number on the Homelite trimmer and match it to the owner’s manual. The model number is more reliable than guessing from the head shape.

Replacement Method Comparison

The table below shows the main Homelite line replacement methods and when each one is used.

Step-by-Step: Dual-Line Bump Head

This is the most common method for replacing line on a Homelite weed eater. It applies to bump heads that have a removable spool under the cutting head.

1. Stop and secure the trimmer. Turn the Homelite weed eater off and make sure it cannot start. Disconnect the spark plug boot, unplug the cord, or remove the battery. Let the head cool completely before touching it.
2. Remove the spool or head cover. Many Homelite bump heads have release tabs on the sides of the spool housing. Press the tabs and turn the bump knob in the direction indicated by the arrows. If your head has a locking hole, align it and insert a screwdriver or locking pin to hold the shaft while loosening the head. Do not force the knob if it does not turn easily.
3. Take out the spool and note the routing. Lift the spool out carefully. Before removing old line, notice which direction it was wound and how the ends exited the head. This gives you a useful reference if the arrow inside the spool is worn or hard to see.
4. Clean and inspect the head. Remove grass clippings, dirt, and broken line from the spool cavity and eyelets. Check the spool for cracks, the spring for damage, and the bump knob for wear. A cracked spool can cause poor feeding even when new line is installed correctly.
5. Cut two equal pieces of line. Use the length recommended in your manual. If the manual says the head holds 20 feet total, cut two 10-foot pieces. If you are unsure, start with two shorter pieces rather than overfilling the spool.
6. Insert the line into the spool. Place one end of each line into the anchor holes or notches on the spool. Some spools have separate chambers for each side. Keep the two lines separated so they do not cross over each other.
7. Wind the line in the correct direction. Follow the arrow molded inside the spool. Wind each line neatly and snugly, but do not stretch it tight or pile it unevenly. Overlapping line often causes jams and prevents the bump head from feeding.
8. Leave the ends free. Leave about 6 to 8 inches of line on each side. Hook the loose ends into the holding notches if your spool has them. This keeps the spool from unraveling while you reinstall it.
9. Thread the line through the eyelets. On many Homelite heads, the line ends must pass through the exit holes before the spool is fully seated. On others, you thread them after the spool clicks into place. Follow the head design and make sure each line exits smoothly.
10. Reinstall the spool and bump knob. Place the spool back into the head, align any tabs, and turn the bump knob until it locks. Pull both line ends gently to release them from the holding notches. The lines should move freely before you start the trimmer.

Single-Line and Fixed-Line Heads

Single-line bump head. If your Homelite weed eater uses one line, remove the spool and wind one piece of trimmer line in the direction shown on the spool. Leave a 6 to 8 inch tail, thread it through the single eyelet, and reinstall the spool. Single-line heads are simpler, but they still need neat winding. A loose or crossed coil can stop the line from advancing.

Fixed-line or Speed Load-style head. Some Homelite heads are designed for faster reloading. For this style, you usually do not remove the spool. Cut two equal pieces of line, insert one end of each piece through the eyelets, and pull until both sides are even. Twist the bump knob or locking cap as directed, then pull the line ends to make sure they are held securely. If the knob will not turn, remove the line and reseat it instead of forcing the plastic parts.

Manual-load head. If your head does not have a removable spool or a twist-lock loading system, it may require manual threading. Feed the line through the internal path, pull both ends out to equal length, and secure the head according to the manual. This style is less common, but it is still found on some older Homelite trimmers.

Reassemble, Test, and Feed Line

After loading the Homelite line, double-check the head before starting. The spool should sit flat, the bump knob should be tight, and both line ends should slide through the eyelets without catching. Trim the ends to about 6 to 8 inches. Lines that are too long make the trimmer work harder and can break more easily.

1. Reconnect the spark plug boot, plug in the cord, or reinstall the battery only when the head is fully assembled.
2. Start the Homelite weed eater in a clear area away from people, pets, rocks, and hard surfaces.
3. Let the head reach normal operating speed before testing the bump feed.
4. Lightly tap the bump knob on the ground while the trimmer is running. Do not push hard; the bump mechanism should release line in short sections.
5. If line does not advance, stop the trimmer, disconnect power again, and check the spool direction, line length, and eyelet clearance.

A properly loaded head feeds line gradually. If you have to slam the head against the ground, the line is probably wound incorrectly, cut too short, tangled inside the spool, or caught in the eyelets.

Troubleshooting and Best Practices

• Line will not feed. Check that the line was wound in the direction of the arrow. Make sure the ends are long enough, the spool is seated correctly, and the eyelets are not clogged with old line or grass. Also confirm that the bump knob moves freely.
• Line feeds too much at once. The line may be wound loosely, the spool may be overloaded, or the spring may not be seated correctly. Remove the spool, rewind neatly, and use the recommended line length.
• Line breaks immediately. This often happens when the diameter is too small, the line is old and brittle, or the trimmer is hitting fences, rocks, concrete, or tree roots. Use fresh line and keep the cutting tip away from hard objects.
• Line jams inside the head. Overfilling the spool is a common cause. Line can also jam if the two sides cross over each other or if the eyelets have melted plastic from friction. Clean the head and reload with shorter pieces.
• Head does not spin well. Remove debris from the head and inspect the spool. If the spool is cracked or the bump knob is damaged, replace the spool or head assembly. If the head still drags with new line, the issue may be mechanical rather than line-related.
• Best practice for longer line life. Reload before the line is completely gone. When line becomes very short, the head has to work harder to feed it, and the trimmer is more likely to be pushed into hard surfaces.
• Best practice for storage. Store replacement line in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Old line exposed to heat and UV light can become brittle and snap during use.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size trimmer line should I use on my Homelite weed eater?

Use the line diameter listed in your Homelite owner’s manual or printed on the trimmer head. Common sizes include 0.065 in., 0.080 in., and 0.095 in., but the correct size depends on the model. Using line that is too thick can jam the head, while line that is too thin may break quickly.

Why is my Homelite trimmer line not feeding?

The most common causes are incorrect winding direction, tangled line on the spool, line that is too short, a clogged eyelet, or a spool that is not seated correctly. Stop the trimmer, disconnect power, remove the head, and rewind the line neatly according to the arrow inside the spool.

Can I use any replacement line on a Homelite weed eater?

No. You should use nylon trimmer line that matches the recommended diameter and head capacity. Do not use wire, rope, or random plastic cord. Round line is best for general grass, while twisted or serrated line can help with tougher weeds if your Homelite head supports it.

How often should I replace trimmer line?

Replace Homelite line whenever it becomes short, frayed, brittle, or difficult to feed. Heavy use around driveways, fences, and edging areas wears line faster. Keeping pre-cut pieces ready makes routine reloading quicker and helps you avoid stopping in the middle of a trimming job.

Conclusion

Knowing how to replace line on Homelite weed eater models is mostly about using the correct line size, identifying the head type, and winding or inserting the line in the right direction. For most dual-line bump heads, the process is simple: disconnect power, remove the spool, clean the head, wind two equal pieces of line, thread the ends through the eyelets, and test the bump feed.

If the line does not feed after replacement, stop and recheck the spool before continuing. Neat winding, clean eyelets, and the correct Homelite replacement line will usually solve the problem and keep your weed eater ready for clean, reliable trimming.
