Understanding Your Stihl Weed Eater Head Types
Stihl trimmers ship with three main head designs. Knowing which one you have determines the exact loading technique.
Fixed Line Head
A fixed‑line head holds a single length of line that is manually cut to size and inserted into two opposing eyelets. This design is simple, durable, and ideal for light‑to‑moderate trimming. Because the line does not advance automatically, you must stop the machine and reload when the line wears down.
Bump Feed Head
The bump‑feed (or “tap‑and‑go”) head stores a spool of line inside a housing. When you tap the head on the ground while the engine is running, a centrifugal mechanism releases a short length of line. This system is popular for residential users because it reduces downtime.
Auto Feed Head
An automatic feed head uses a spring‑loaded mechanism that advances line each time the throttle is engaged. It offers the most hands‑free operation but can be more sensitive to line diameter and tension. Proper loading is critical to prevent jams.
Tools and Materials Needed
Before you start, gather the following items to make the job smooth and safe:
- Replacement trimmer line (matching the diameter recommended for your model, typically 0.080‑0.095 in for most Stihl residential units)
- Scissors or a sharp utility knife for cutting line
- Protective gloves to avoid cuts from the line edges
- Safety glasses or goggles
- A clean rag or shop towel for wiping debris
- Owner’s manual for model‑specific diagrams (optional but helpful)
Having everything within arm’s reach prevents interruptions and reduces the chance of losing small parts such as the spool retainer or spring.
Safety Precautions
Working on a powered trimmer carries inherent risks. Follow these precautions every time you service the line:
- Turn off the engine and disconnect the spark plug wire (or remove the battery on cordless models) to eliminate accidental starts.
- Allow the cutting head to cool completely if the unit has been running.
- Wear gloves and eye protection; the line can snap and whip unexpectedly.
- Work on a stable, flat surface with good lighting.
- Keep children and pets away from the work area.
These steps protect you and ensure the trimmer remains in safe operating condition after the line change.
Step-by-Step Guide: How to Replace Line in Stihl Weed Eater
The following ordered list covers the universal steps that apply to all Stihl head types. After the general steps, you will find head‑specific details.
- Power down the trimmer and disconnect the spark plug wire or battery.
- Remove the cutting head from the shaft by loosening the retaining nut or pressing the release button, depending on the model.
- Inspect the head for damage, cracked eyelets, or worn springs; replace any defective parts before reloading.
- Pull out any remaining old line from the spool or eyelets.
- Cut a length of new line according to the head’s specifications (usually 10‑12 ft for bump‑feed spools, 6‑8 ft for fixed‑line heads).
- Insert the line into the designated loading ports, following the directional arrows molded into the head.
- Wind the line onto the spool in the direction indicated (usually clockwise when viewed from the top), keeping tension even and avoiding overlaps.
- Secure the line ends in the retaining slots or notches.
- Re‑attach the head to the shaft, tightening the retaining nut to the torque specified in the manual.
- Reconnect the spark plug wire or battery, start the engine, and test the feed by gently tapping the head (bump feed) or engaging the throttle (auto feed).
Detailed Walkthrough for Bump Feed Head
Bump‑feed heads are the most common on Stihl residential trimmers. The spool sits inside a housing with a spring‑loaded knob. After removing the head, locate the spool release button—usually a small tab on the side of the housing. Press it and lift the spool out. Note the arrow on the spool that shows winding direction. Feed the line through the eyelet on the spool, pull it through until you have equal lengths on both sides, then wind each side onto its respective half of the spool, keeping the line flat and tight. Once wound, snap the spool back into the housing, ensuring the spring engages. Re‑install the head on the shaft and test the bump action.
Detailed Walkthrough for Auto Feed Head
Auto‑feed heads have a sealed housing with a small access door. Open the door by sliding the latch. Inside you will see a single spool with a central hub. The line must be threaded through the hub’s guide hole, then wound evenly around the spool in the direction of the arrow (usually counter‑clockwise). Because the mechanism advances line automatically, it is crucial that the line sits flat without crossing. After winding, close the access door securely. Re‑mount the head, start the trimmer, and let the engine run for a few seconds; the auto‑feed should extend line without any tapping.
Choosing the Right Trimmer Line
Line diameter, shape, and material affect cutting performance, line life, and feed reliability. The table below compares the most common options for Stihl trimmers.
| Line Type | Diameter (in) | Shape | Best For | Typical Life |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Round Nylon | 0.080‑0.095 | Round | General grass and light weeds | Medium |
| Square/Star Nylon | 0.080‑0.095 | Square or Star | Thick weeds, brush, and edging | Long |
| Twisted/Serated Nylon | 0.080‑0.105 | Twisted | Heavy‑duty brush and small saplings | Long |
| Co‑polymer / Reinforced | 0.095‑0.130 | Round or Square | Professional landscaping, abrasive conditions | Very Long |
Always consult your owner’s manual for the maximum diameter your head can accept. Using line that is too thick can cause feeding problems and excess vibration.
Tips and Best Practices
- Cut the line to the exact length recommended for your spool; excess line creates drag and reduces feed speed.
- Wind the line under slight tension—this prevents loose loops that can jam the feed mechanism.
- Store spare line in a cool, dry place; UV exposure makes nylon brittle over time.
- Periodically clean the head housing with compressed air to remove grass clippings that can impede the bump or auto feed.
- If you notice uneven line wear, rotate the spool 180° halfway through the season to balance wear.
- Use a line gauge or the measuring marks on the spool to verify you have the correct amount of line before closing the head.
Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
- Over‑filling the spool: Too much line prevents the bump mechanism from releasing line. Stop winding when the spool is about 80 % full.
- Wrong winding direction: Winding opposite the arrow causes the line to feed backward or not at all. Always follow the molded arrow.
- Using mismatched diameter: A line that is too thick for the head will bind; too thin will break prematurely. Check the manual.
- Neglecting to secure line ends: Loose ends can slip out of the retaining slots, causing the line to unwind inside the housing.
- Forgetting to re‑tighten the retaining nut: A loose head can detach during operation, creating a safety hazard.
Maintenance After Line Replacement
After you have successfully replaced the line, a few quick checks will extend the life of both the line and the head. First, run the trimmer at low throttle for 30 seconds and observe the feed action; the line should extend smoothly without excessive vibration. Next, inspect the head for any wobble or unusual noise—tighten the retaining nut if needed. Finally, wipe the exterior of the head and shaft to remove grass sap, which can accelerate corrosion on metal parts. Performing this brief post‑install inspection after every line change helps catch minor issues before they become costly repairs.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I replace the trimmer line?
Line replacement frequency depends on usage intensity and vegetation type. For typical residential lawn care, expect to reload the spool every 2‑4 hours of cutting time. Heavy brush work may require replacement every hour.
Can I use any brand of trimmer line in my Stihl weed eater?
Yes, as long as the line diameter and shape match the specifications in your owner’s manual. Stihl‑branded line is engineered for optimal feed performance, but many reputable aftermarket lines work equally well.
Why does my line keep breaking near the eyelet?
Breakage at the eyelet usually indicates a sharp edge on the eyelet, incorrect line diameter, or excessive tension while winding. Inspect the eyelet for burrs, use the recommended diameter, and wind with moderate, even tension.
My bump feed head won’t release line when I tap it. What should I do?
First, verify the spool is wound in the correct direction and not over‑filled. Clean any debris from the bump knob and spring. If the problem persists, the internal spring may be worn and require replacement.
The auto feed head jams frequently. How can I fix it?
Auto feed jams are often caused by crossed line or line that is too thick. Re‑wind the spool carefully, ensuring each turn lies flat. Confirm you are using a line diameter within the head’s rated range.
How do I know the correct length for a fixed‑line head?
Most fixed‑line heads have a marking on the spool or housing indicating the total line length (usually 6‑8 ft). Cut the line to that length, insert each end into the opposite eyelets, and pull tight.
