What Is a Weed Eater Line Spool?

The weed eater line spool is the internal core component of your string trimmer that holds the cutting line, controls its feed rate, and retracts it when not in use. Typically made of durable, impact-resistant plastic, the spool is designed to hold 10 to 30 feet of cutting line, depending on the size of your trimmer head and the thickness of the line you use. As you use your trimmer, the line wears down from constant friction, so it either extends automatically (for bump or automatic feed models) or must be pulled out manually (for fixed-line models) to maintain the correct cutting length. When the line is completely worn down, refilling the spool is a quick alternative to buying a new pre-assembled spool, and it extends the lifespan of your trimmer significantly.

Why Learning to Refill Your Spool Saves Time and Money

Many weed eater owners assume that refilling a spool is a complicated, specialized task, but it is actually one of the easiest maintenance steps you can perform on your trimmer. Pre-assembled replacement spools typically cost between $5 and $15 each, depending on the brand and line thickness, while bulk rolls of weed eater line cost $3 to $10 for 50 feet or more, which is enough to refill your spool 3 to 5 times. Beyond cost, refilling your own spool eliminates the need to make last-minute trips to the hardware store when you run out of line mid-project, which can delay yard work by hours if your local store is out of stock of the correct spool type for your model. You also have full control over the type of line you use, so you can choose a line optimized for your yard’s specific needs, rather than being limited to whatever line comes pre-loaded on cheap replacement spools. For beginners, the entire process takes less than 10 minutes to learn, and with practice, you can refill a spool in under 2 minutes.

Common Types of Weed Eater Line and Spool Designs

Weed eater spools come in three primary designs, each with a slightly different refill process and use case. The line itself also comes in a few different shapes, each optimized for specific types of vegetation. The most common line shapes include round line for general grass trimming, square line with sharp edges for thicker weeds, and serrated line with tooth-like edges for dense woody brush. The three main spool designs are bump feed, fixed line, and automatic feed, each with unique features and refill requirements. The comparison table below breaks down the key differences between these spool types to help you identify which one you have:

Tools and Materials You’ll Need for a Spool Refill

Refilling a weed eater spool requires no special tools or expensive equipment, and all the items you need are available at any local hardware store or home improvement center. Before you start, gather the following supplies:

• Replacement weed eater line: Make sure to purchase line that matches the diameter recommended by your trimmer’s manufacturer. This information is usually printed on the old spool, the trimmer head, or in your owner’s manual. Common sizes range from 0.065 inches for light-duty residential trimmers to 0.105 inches for heavy-duty commercial models.
• Scissors or utility knife: Used to cut the line to the correct length and make a clean, straight edge to prevent jams.
• Flathead screwdriver (optional): Helpful for prying off stubborn spool covers that are stuck due to dirt or grime buildup.
• Clean rag: Used to wipe away grass clippings, dirt, and debris from the spool housing before reinstalling the spool.
• Work gloves (optional): Protects your hands from sharp line edges and any rough surfaces on the trimmer head.

Step-by-Step Spool Refill Guides

The exact refill process varies slightly depending on the type of spool your weed eater uses. Below are step-by-step guides for the three most common spool types, with clear instructions for each step to ensure a tangle-free, functional refill.

Standard Round Spool Refill

Standard round spools are the most basic design, used on entry-level residential trimmers. They hold line wound around a central core, and line is fed out manually or via a simple bump mechanism. Follow these steps to refill a standard round spool:

1. Disconnect the weed eater from its power source: For gas models, turn off the engine and disconnect the spark plug wire to prevent accidental startup. For electric models, unplug the cord or remove the battery. This is a critical safety step that prevents injury while you work on the spool.
2. Remove the spool cover: Locate the spool cover at the bottom of the weed eater head, usually secured with a twist-lock mechanism or small screws. Twist the cover counterclockwise or unscrew the fasteners to remove it, then set the cover aside in a safe place.
3. Remove the empty spool: Pull the empty spool straight out of the housing.
4. Clean the spool housing: Use your clean rag to wipe away any grass clippings, dirt, or debris from the inside of the housing and the spool shaft. Debris can cause the line to feed incorrectly or jam the mechanism, so this step ensures smooth operation after refilling.
5. Prepare the replacement line: Cut a length of line that is 1.5 to 2 times the length of the old line you removed. For most residential trimmers, this is 10 to 15 feet. Use your scissors or utility knife to cut a clean, straight edge – a jagged cut can cause the line to jam during feeding.
6. Wind the line around the spool: Locate the direction arrow printed on the spool (almost all spools have an arrow indicating the correct winding direction, usually clockwise). Insert the end of the line into the small notch at the center of the spool, then wind the line tightly around the spool in the direction of the arrow. Keep the line even and taut as you wind to avoid tangles. Leave 6 to 8 inches of line sticking out of the notch when you’re done winding.
7. Reinstall the spool: Align the spool with the slot in the housing, then push it straight in until it clicks into place. Make sure the line end is fed through the exit hole in the housing.
8. Reattach the spool cover: Twist the cover clockwise or screw the fasteners back in until it’s snug. Do not overtighten, as this can crack the plastic cover.
9. Test the line feed: Reconnect the power source (spark plug or battery), then bump the bottom of the trimmer on the ground 2 to 3 times to feed out a few inches of line. Trim any excess line with your scissors if needed. Your weed eater is now ready to use.

Bump Feed Spool Refill

Bump feed spools are the most popular design for modern residential and commercial trimmers, as they allow you to extend the line with a quick tap of the spool on the ground. The refill process is similar to the standard round spool, with a few key differences:

1. Disconnect the power source: Same as with all models, turn off the engine and disconnect the spark plug for gas models, or remove the battery for cordless electric models. Unplug corded models before starting.
2. Remove the spool cap: The bump feed spool has a round cap on the bottom of the trimmer head, secured with a twist-lock. Turn the cap counterclockwise to remove it, then set it aside.
3. Take out the old spool: Pull the empty spool straight out of the housing.
4. Clean the housing and spool shaft: Wipe away any debris from the housing and the shaft that the spool rotates on. Buildup here can cause the spool to stick, preventing line from feeding correctly.
5. Wind the new line onto the spool: Cut a 10 to 15 foot length of line (check your manual for the exact recommended length for your model). Insert the end of the line into the notch at the center of the spool, then wind it tightly around the spool in the direction of the arrow printed on the spool (almost always clockwise for bump feed models). Keep the line even as you wind, and leave 4 to 6 inches of line sticking out of the notch when finished.
6. Reinstall the spool: Align the spool with the slot in the housing, making sure the line end is fed through the exit hole. Push the spool in until it clicks into place.
7. Reattach the spool cap: Twist the cap clockwise until it’s snug. Do not overtighten, as this can make it difficult to bump the cap to feed line later.
8. Test the feed mechanism: Reconnect the power source, then turn on the trimmer. Tap the bottom of the spool cap on the ground 2 to 3 times – you should see 2 to 3 inches of line extend from the head. If the line doesn’t feed, double-check that you wound the line in the correct direction and that it’s seated properly in the notch.

Fixed-Line Spool Refill

Fixed-line spools don’t have a bump mechanism, so line is fed manually by pulling it out to the desired length. The refill process is slightly different from bump feed models, but still straightforward:

1. Disconnect the power source: As with all models, turn off the engine and disconnect the spark plug for gas trimmers, or remove the battery for cordless models. Unplug corded trimmers to avoid accidental startup.
2. Remove the spool cover: Fixed-line spools usually have a cover secured with a twist-lock or small clips. Twist the cover counterclockwise or release the clips to remove it, then set the cover aside.
3. Remove the empty spool: Pull the spool straight out of the housing.
4. Clean the housing and line clamp: Wipe away any grass, dirt, or debris from the housing and the line clamp. A dirty clamp can cause the line to slip, leading to inconsistent cutting performance.
5. Cut the new line to length: Fixed-line spools typically require longer line than bump feed models – check your manual for the exact length, but most require 15 to 20 feet of line. Cut a clean, straight edge with your scissors or utility knife.
6. Thread the line through the housing: Insert one end of the line through the exit hole in the housing, then push it through until it reaches the line clamp inside.
7. Wind the line onto the spool: Wind the line tightly around the spool in the direction of the arrow printed on the spool (usually clockwise for fixed-line models). Keep the line even and taut as you wind to avoid tangles. Leave 6 to 8 inches of line sticking out of the exit hole when you’re done.
8. Reinstall the spool and clamp: Align the spool with the slot in the housing, then push it in until it clicks into place. Reattach the line clamp to hold the line in place, making sure it’s tight enough to prevent the line from slipping but not so tight that it cuts into the line.
9. Reattach the spool cover: Twist the cover clockwise or snap the clips back into place until it’s secure.
10. Test the line: Reconnect the power source, then pull the end of the line to extend it to your desired length (usually 6 to 8 inches past the trimmer head). If the line slips back into the housing, tighten the line clamp slightly. Your fixed-line trimmer is now ready for use.

Tips and Best Practices for a Clean, Tangle-Free Refill

Following these simple tips will help you avoid common refill issues and ensure your line feeds smoothly every time you use your trimmer:

• Always wind the line in the correct direction: Every spool has a printed arrow indicating the proper winding direction. Winding the line backwards will cause it to jam, tangle, or feed incorrectly, leading to poor cutting performance and frequent stoppages.
• Keep the line taut while winding: Loose, slack line will tangle inside the spool, causing jams and uneven feeding. Hold the line tight with one hand while winding with the other to ensure it’s evenly and tightly wound.
• Match the line diameter to your trimmer’s specifications: Using line that is too thick will overload the trimmer’s engine and cause premature wear, while line that is too thin will break easily and feed inconsistently. Check your trimmer’s manual for the recommended line size, which is usually printed on the spool housing as well.
• Cut a clean, straight edge on the line: A jagged or angled cut will catch on the spool’s exit hole, causing jams and preventing the line from feeding smoothly. Use sharp scissors or a utility knife to make a clean cut every time.
• Don’t overfill the spool: Overfilling the spool with too much line will cause it to bulge, which prevents it from seating properly in the housing and leads to jams. Stick to the recommended line length for your spool size, usually 10 to 20 feet depending on the model.
• Store bulk line in a cool, dry place: Exposure to sunlight and moisture can make the line brittle, causing it to break easily during use.
• Clean the spool housing regularly: Grass clippings, dirt, and debris build up inside the housing over time, which can jam the spool and prevent line from feeding correctly. Wiping out the housing every 3 to 4 refills will keep your trimmer running smoothly.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Refilling Your Weed Eater Line

Even experienced DIYers can make these common mistakes when refilling their weed eater spool, leading to jams, poor performance, and unnecessary frustration. Avoid these errors to make the refill process as smooth as possible:

• Winding the line in the wrong direction: This is the most common mistake new users make. If your line won’t feed or jams constantly after refilling, the first thing to check is the winding direction. Look for the arrow on the spool and rewind the line if needed.
• Using the wrong line thickness: Line that is too thick will strain your trimmer’s motor, while line that is too thin will break easily. Always check your manual for the recommended diameter, which is usually marked on the old spool or the trimmer head.
• Overfilling the spool: Overfilled spools won’t seat correctly in the housing, leading to jams and inconsistent feeding. Stick to the recommended length for your spool size.
• Skipping the housing cleaning step: Debris buildup inside the housing is a common cause of feeding issues, even with a perfectly refilled spool. Take an extra 30 seconds to wipe out the housing every time you refill to avoid this problem.
• Forgetting to disconnect the power source: Accidental startup while working on the spool can cause serious injury. Always disconnect the spark plug, battery, or power cord before starting any maintenance on your weed eater.
• Cutting the line at an angle: A slanted cut will catch on the spool’s exit hole, causing jams and preventing the line from feeding smoothly. Always make a straight, clean cut across the line.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often do I need to refill my weed eater line?

The frequency of refills depends on how often you use your trimmer and the type of vegetation you’re cutting. For light residential use, you’ll typically need to refill your spool every 2 to 4 weeks. If you’re cutting thick brush, woody vegetation, or using the trimmer for commercial properties multiple times a week, you may need to refill it every few days.

Can I use any type of line for my weed eater spool?

No, you should always use line that matches the diameter recommended by your trimmer’s manufacturer. Using line that is too thick will overload the trimmer’s engine and cause excessive wear on the spool mechanism, while line that is too thin will break easily when hitting rocks or dense vegetation. Check your owner’s manual for the correct line size, which usually ranges from 0.065 inches for light-duty residential trimmers to 0.105 inches for heavy-duty commercial models.

Why is my weed eater line jamming after I refill the spool?

Line jams are almost always caused by one of three issues: you wound the line in the wrong direction, you overfilled the spool, or you cut the line at an angle. First, check that you wound the line in the direction of the arrow printed on the spool – winding it backwards is the most common cause of jams. Next, make sure you didn’t overfill the spool, as excess line can bulge and catch on the housing. Finally, check that you made a straight, clean cut on the end of the line – a jagged cut will catch on the exit hole and cause jams. If you’ve checked all three and the line still jams, clean out the spool housing to remove any debris that may be blocking the line path.

How much line do I need to cut for a refill?

Most bump feed and fixed-line spools require 10 to 20 feet of line, depending on the size of the spool and your trimmer model. A good rule is to cut a length of line that is 1.5 to 2 times the length of the empty line you removed from the old spool. If you’re unsure, check your owner’s manual for the exact recommended length for your model.

Can I reuse old line from a broken spool?

Yes, as long as the old line is not frayed, brittle, or damaged. If you have leftover line from a previous spool that is in good condition, you can wind it onto a new spool just like new line. If the line is worn, has nicks or cuts, or is brittle from exposure to sunlight, it will break easily during use, so it’s best to dispose of it and use new line.

How long does it take to refill a weed eater spool?

For most users, refilling a weed eater spool takes 2 to 5 minutes, depending on your experience level and the type of spool you have. Bump feed spools are the fastest to refill, usually taking 2 to 3 minutes, while fixed-line spools may take 3 to 5 minutes because of the extra threading step.

Conclusion

Learning how to fill weed eater line is a simple, low-cost skill that every weed eater owner should master. By refilling your spool yourself instead of buying pre-assembled replacements, you can save $5 to $15 per refill, eliminate mid-job delays, and customize your line to match your yard’s specific needs. Whether you have a bump feed, fixed-line, or automatic feed spool, the process only takes a few minutes and requires no special tools or experience. Remember to always wind the line in the correct direction, use the right line diameter for your trimmer, and clean the spool housing regularly to avoid jams and ensure smooth, consistent performance. With these steps and best practices, you’ll never have to pause mid-yard work to deal with a dead spool again, and your weed eater will stay in top condition for years to come.
