Understanding Stihl Trimmer Line Basics

Before diving into the reload process, it’s important to understand the basics of Stihl trimmer line, as using the wrong type or size can lead to poor performance, frequent jams, and even damage to your weed eater. Stihl designs its trimmers to work best with specific line types and diameters, so checking your model’s specifications is the first step to a successful reload.

Common Stihl Trimmer Line Types

Stihl offers several trimmer line options, each designed for different cutting conditions:

• Round Line: The most common, versatile option, ideal for light grass and weeds around sidewalks, driveways, and residential lawns. It’s affordable and easy to handle, but dulls quickly when cutting thick, woody vegetation.
• Square Line: Has sharp edges that cut like a knife, making it perfect for dense weeds, thick grass, and light brush. It stays sharp longer than round line but can be more prone to breakage on rocky or paved surfaces.
• Star (Serrated) Line: Features small notches along the length that grab and cut tough vegetation efficiently. It’s the best choice for commercial use, overgrown lots, and thick, woody weeds, though it’s slightly more expensive than round or square line.
• Silent Line: A Stihl-exclusive design that reduces noise and vibration during operation, making it ideal for residential areas where noise ordinances apply. It performs similarly to round line but operates much more quietly.

When selecting line for your reload, opt for Stihl-branded line whenever possible, as it’s engineered to work seamlessly with Stihl’s feed systems and spool designs. Third-party lines may work, but they often have inconsistent diameters or material quality that can cause jams or premature wear.

Matching Line Size to Your Stihl Model

Using the wrong line diameter is one of the most common causes of reload issues. Most Stihl residential weed eaters use either .080-inch (2.0 mm) or .095-inch (2.4 mm) trimmer line, while heavy-duty commercial models may use .105-inch (2.7 mm) line. You can find the correct size for your model in three places:

1. On the label of the existing line spool, which is usually marked with the diameter.
2. In your Stihl owner’s manual, under the “Specifications” section.
3. On the Stihl website, by entering your model number into the parts lookup tool.

Using line that’s too thick will make it difficult to feed through the head, while line that’s too thin will slip and fail to cut effectively, and may even break inside the spool, causing a jam that requires full disassembly to fix.

Preparing for a Stihl Weed Eater Reload

Taking a few minutes to prepare before you start reloading will make the process faster, safer, and more likely to succeed on the first try. Skipping prep steps can lead to safety hazards, tangled line, or a broken trimmer head.

Safety First Before Reloading

Even though reloading a weed eater seems like a low-risk task, it’s critical to follow basic safety precautions to avoid injury. Stihl weed eaters have a small but powerful engine that can start unexpectedly if the spark plug is still connected, leading to serious cuts or lacerations. Before you begin any reload, follow these steps:

1. Place the weed eater on a flat, stable surface, like a workbench or the ground.
2. Turn off the engine and let it cool completely if you’ve just been using it, as the trimmer head and engine can get very hot during operation.
3. Disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug. This is the most important safety step, as it prevents the engine from accidentally starting while you’re working on the head. For battery-powered Stihl models, remove the battery pack entirely.
4. Wear cut-resistant gloves to protect your hands from sharp trimmer line edges, and safety glasses to guard against debris or snapped line that could fly into your eyes.

Tools and Supplies Needed

Most Stihl weed eater reloads require only a few basic tools, many of which come with the trimmer when you purchase it. Gather these items before you start to avoid interruptions:

• Replacement Stihl trimmer line (correct diameter for your model)
• Scissors or a dedicated trimmer line cutter (sharp scissors work fine for most line types)
• A small flathead screwdriver (only needed for models with screw-on spool caps; many Stihl models have tool-free caps)
• A clean, dry cloth to wipe away grass, dirt, and debris from the trimmer head and spool housing
• A spare Stihl spool (optional, but recommended for even faster reloads if you frequently pre-load line)

If your Stihl model features the Stihl Fast Reload system, you won’t need any tools at all for most reloads, as the system is designed for tool-free access to the line spool or reload port.

Step-by-Step Reload Guides for All Stihl Feed Types

Stihl weed eaters use three main line feed systems: bump feed, automatic feed, and manual feed. The reload process varies slightly depending on which system your model uses, so follow the guide below that matches your trimmer. All Stihl models with the Fast Reload feature have modified steps to eliminate the need to remove the entire spool for reloading, which we’ll note in each section.

Reloading Bump Feed Stihl Weed Eaters

Bump feed is the most common Stihl feed system, found on most residential and mid-range commercial models. Line extends automatically when you tap the trimmer head on the ground while the trimmer is running. Follow these steps to reload a bump feed Stihl weed eater, including models with Fast Reload:

1. Disconnect the spark plug or remove the battery to prevent accidental starting, as outlined in the safety section above.
2. For standard models, turn the spool cap counterclockwise until it loosens, then pull it straight off the trimmer head. For Stihl Fast Reload bump feed models, locate the small reload port on the side of the trimmer head and flip it open – you won’t need to remove the entire spool for these models.
3. Pull out all remaining old line, then wipe away any built-up grass, dirt, or debris from the spool housing and the inside of the trimmer head. Buildup can cause line to jam or feed incorrectly, so this step is critical for smooth operation.
4. Cut two equal lengths of new trimmer line to match the length of the old line you removed, or check your owner’s manual for the recommended length (usually 10 to 15 feet for most models).
5. For standard models: insert one end of each line into the small anchor hole on the spool, wind the line around the spool in the direction of the arrows printed on the spool (almost always clockwise for Stihl models), and leave 6 to 8 inches of line sticking out of the anchor hole when you’re done winding. For Fast Reload models: feed one end of each new line into the reload port, then turn the spool clockwise by hand to wind the line onto the spool, leaving 6 to 8 inches of line sticking out of the feed holes on the head.
6. Reassemble the trimmer head: for standard models, place the loaded spool back into the trimmer head, aligning the tabs on the spool with the slots in the housing. Replace the spool cap and turn it clockwise until it’s tight. For Fast Reload models, simply close the reload port until it clicks into place.
7. Reconnect the spark plug or battery and test the feed: turn on the trimmer, then tap the head on the ground (standard models) or rev the engine (Fast Reload models) to extend the line. If the line doesn’t extend, double-check that you wound the line in the correct direction and that both ends are even and not tangled inside the head.

Reloading Automatic Feed Stihl Weed Eaters

Automatic feed Stihl models extend the trimmer line automatically when you release the throttle trigger, so you don’t have to bump the head to get more line. This feed type is popular with commercial landscapers who need consistent line length without extra effort. Here’s how to reload an automatic feed Stihl weed eater, including Fast Reload variants:

1. Start by disconnecting the spark plug or removing the battery for safety.
2. For standard automatic feed models, remove the spool cap by turning it counterclockwise and pull the spool out of the head. For Stihl Fast Reload automatic models, open the side reload port to access the spool without full disassembly.
3. Pull out all remaining old line, then wipe the spool housing and head interior clean of debris and grass clippings.
4. Cut two equal lengths of new trimmer line to match the length of the old line you removed, or check your manual for the recommended length (usually 12 to 18 feet for automatic models).
5. Insert one end of each line into the anchor holes on the spool, then wind the line around the spool in the direction of the arrows (clockwise for all Stihl automatic models). Leave 8 to 10 inches of line sticking out of the feed holes when you’re done winding – automatic feed systems require slightly longer overhang than bump feed to function correctly. For Fast Reload automatic models, feed the new line through the reload port and turn the spool clockwise by hand to wind it on, leaving the required overhang.
6. Reassemble the head: place the spool back into the housing, align the tabs, and tighten the spool cap (or close the Fast Reload port until it clicks).
7. Reconnect the spark plug or battery, then test the feed by revving the engine and releasing the trigger. The line should extend automatically to the correct length. If it doesn’t, check that the line is wound in the right direction and that the overhang is long enough.

Reloading Manual Feed Stihl Weed Eaters

Manual feed Stihl trimmers require you to extend the line manually by pressing a button on the head or pulling the line out by hand. These models are popular for small yards and precision edging, as they give you full control over line length. Follow these steps to reload a manual feed Stihl weed eater, including Fast Reload versions:

1. Disconnect the spark plug or remove the battery for safety first.
2. For standard manual feed models, remove the spool cap by turning it counterclockwise and pull the spool out of the head. For Stihl Fast Reload manual models, open the reload port on the side of the head to access the spool without removing it.
3. Remove all old line from the spool, then wipe the housing and head interior clean of debris.
4. Cut two equal lengths of new trimmer line to match the old line length, or check your manual for the recommended length (usually 8 to 12 feet for manual models).
5. Insert one end of each line into the anchor holes on the spool, then wind the line around the spool in the direction of the arrows (clockwise for Stihl manual models). Leave 6 to 8 inches of line sticking out of the feed holes. For Fast Reload manual models, feed the new line through the reload port and turn the spool clockwise to wind it on, leaving the required overhang.
6. Reassemble the head: place the spool back into the housing, align the tabs, and tighten the spool cap (or close the Fast Reload port until it clicks).
7. Reconnect the spark plug or battery, then test the feed by pressing the manual feed button or pulling the line out by hand. The line should extend smoothly to the correct length. If it doesn’t, check that the line is wound correctly and that the overhang is not tangled.

Feed Type Comparison: Bump vs. Automatic vs. Manual

Choosing the right feed type for your needs can make reloading and day-to-day use much easier. The table below compares the three main Stihl feed types, including how the Stihl Fast Reload system improves reload times for each.

As the table shows, the Stihl Fast Reload system cuts reload time by more than half for all feed types, making it a valuable feature for users who reload frequently, such as professional landscapers or homeowners with large properties.

Pro Tips for Fast Stihl Weed Eater Reloads

Once you master the basic reload process, you can use these pro tips to make reloads even faster and extend the life of your trimmer line and weed eater:

• Always wind line in the direction of the arrows on the spool: Winding line backward is the most common cause of jams and tangles, and will require you to disassemble the head to fix. The arrows are printed on every Stihl spool for a reason – follow them every time.
• Keep a pre-loaded spare spool on hand: If you have a standard (non-Fast Reload) model, keeping a spare spool already loaded with fresh line lets you swap out an empty spool in 30 seconds or less, cutting reload time drastically. Fast Reload models don’t require this, but it’s still a useful backup for heavy use.
• Store trimmer line in a cool, dry place: Exposure to sunlight, heat, and moisture can make trimmer line brittle and prone to breaking. Keep unused line in its original packaging in a garage or shed to extend its shelf life.
• Don’t overfill the spool: Overloading the spool with too much line will cause it to bunch up and jam the feed system. Leave a small gap between the wound line and the edge of the spool to allow for smooth feeding.
• Clean the trimmer head every 3–5 reloads: Grass clippings, dirt, and debris build up in the spool housing over time, which can block line from feeding correctly. Wipe out the housing with a dry cloth during each reload to prevent this.
• Use Stihl Fast Reload models if you reload frequently: If you’re in the market for a new Stihl weed eater, opt for a model with the Fast Reload system. It eliminates the need to remove the spool for most reloads, saving you significant time and hassle over the life of the tool.
• Cut line ends to be perfectly even: Uneven line ends can cause the line to catch on the trimmer head during operation, leading to breakage or jams. Use a sharp cutter to make both ends exactly the same length after reloading.

Common Reloading Mistakes to Avoid

Even experienced Stihl users make mistakes when reloading their weed eaters, leading to wasted time, broken parts, or poor cutting performance. Avoid these common errors to make your reloads as smooth as possible:

• Winding line in the wrong direction: As mentioned earlier, this is the top cause of post-reload jams. Always check the arrows on the spool before you start winding, and wind clockwise unless your model’s manual specifies otherwise (almost all Stihl models use clockwise winding).
• Using the wrong line size: Line that’s too thick will not fit through the feed holes, while line that’s too thin will slip and fail to cut. Double-check your model’s required line size before buying replacement line.
• Forgetting to disconnect the spark plug: This is a major safety hazard. An accidental start while you’re working on the head can cause severe cuts to your hands or arms. Make this step non-negotiable every time you reload.
• Overfilling the spool: Packing the spool full of line leaves no room for the line to move freely, causing jams and feed issues. Leave a small gap between the line and the spool edge.
• Not leaving enough overhang: If you don’t leave 6–10 inches of line sticking out of the feed holes (depending on your feed type), the line won’t extend correctly when you use the trimmer. Measure the overhang against the old line you removed to get it right.
• Skipping the debris cleaning step: Grass and dirt buildup in the spool housing is a silent killer of feed systems. Taking 30 seconds to wipe out the housing during each reload will prevent most jams and feed issues.
• Using dull or damaged scissors to cut line: Frayed line ends will break quickly during use, requiring you to reload again sooner. Use a sharp, dedicated line cutter or scissors to make clean, even cuts every time.

Knowing When to Replace (Not Just Reload) Trimmer Line

Reloading your Stihl weed eater adds fresh line to the spool, but there are times when you need to replace the entire spool of line entirely, rather than just adding more. Here’s how to tell when it’s time for a full replacement:

• Frayed or split line: If the line is frayed, split, or has rough edges, it will break easily during use and can damage the trimmer head. Frayed line also cuts less efficiently, so you’ll have to work harder to clear weeds.
• Brittle or discolored line: Line that’s exposed to sunlight, extreme heat, or freezing temperatures for long periods will become brittle and prone to snapping. If your line is faded, stiff, or breaks easily when you bend it, replace it entirely.
• Worn-down diameter: Over time, the outer edges of trimmer line wear down from contact with pavement, rocks, and tough vegetation. If the line is noticeably thinner than when it was new, it will not cut effectively and may slip in the feed system. Replace it with new line of the correct diameter.
• Line that’s been stored for more than 2 years: Even unused trimmer line degrades over time, especially if it’s stored in a hot garage or shed. If your spare line is more than 2 years old, test it for brittleness before using it for a reload.

As a general rule, most users need to fully replace their trimmer line every 3 to 6 months, depending on how often they use their weed eater. Heavy commercial users may need to replace line monthly, while occasional residential users can go 6 months or longer between full replacements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are answers to the most common questions users have about reloading their Stihl weed eaters, including questions about the Stihl Fast Reload system.

How often should I reload my Stihl weed eater?

Reload frequency depends on usage and what you’re cutting. For light residential use (1–2 times per week), you’ll need to reload every 2–4 weeks. For heavy commercial use (5+ days per week cutting thick brush), you may need to reload every 1–2 days. Bump feed models use line faster if you frequently tap the head to extend line, while automatic and manual feed models are more efficient. The Stihl Fast Reload system makes frequent reloads much quicker for heavy users.

Can I use third-party trimmer line in my Stihl weed eater?

Yes, you can use third-party trimmer line in your Stihl weed eater, as long as it matches the correct diameter for your model and is made of high-quality nylon. However, Stihl-branded line is engineered to work perfectly with Stihl’s feed systems and spool designs, so it will feed more smoothly, break less often, and cut more efficiently than most third-party options. If you do use third-party line, opt for a reputable brand that specifies compatibility with Stihl trimmers to avoid jams and feed issues.

Why is my Stihl weed eater line keeping jamming after reloading?

Jams after reloading are almost always caused by one of these common issues: winding line in the wrong direction, using the incorrect line diameter, overfilling the spool, not leaving enough overhang, or failing to clean debris from the spool housing. Start by disconnecting the spark plug, removing the spool, and checking that the line is wound in the direction of the arrows on the spool, that you used the correct line size, and that there’s no debris blocking the feed holes. If the problem persists, inspect the spool for cracks or damage that could be causing line to tangle.

What is Stihl’s “Fast Reload” system, and do all models have it?

Stihl’s Fast Reload system is a design feature available on many newer Stihl weed eater models that allows you to reload trimmer line without removing the entire spool from the trimmer head. Instead, there is a small access port on the side of the head that you can open to feed new line directly onto the spool, cutting reload time from 5–7 minutes to 2–3 minutes. Not all Stihl models have Fast Reload – it’s currently available on most mid-range and high-end residential and commercial models, including the FS 56 RC, FS 94 R, and FSA 45 battery-powered trimmer. You can check if your model has Fast Reload by looking for a small hinged port on the side of the trimmer head, or by checking your owner’s manual.

How much trimmer line do I need for a reload?

The amount of line you need for a reload depends on your Stihl model and feed type. Most bump feed models require 10–15 feet of line (two 5–7.5 foot pieces), automatic feed models require 12–18 feet (two 6–9 foot pieces), and manual feed models require 8–12 feet (two 4–6 foot pieces). The easiest way to get the exact length is to measure the old line you remove from the spool before cutting new line. If you’re loading a brand new spool, check your owner’s manual for the recommended line length for your specific model.
