Introduction
Learning how to tie weed eater line correctly can save you time, money, and frustration every time you fire up your string trimmer. A poorly tied knot slips, breaks, or feeds unevenly, forcing you to stop and re‑string the head in the middle of a job. This guide walks you through the most reliable knots, the anchor methods used on fixed‑head and bump‑feed trimmers, and the practical tips that keep your line feeding smoothly from the first pull to the last cut.

Understanding Weed Eater Line Basics
Types of Line
Weed eater line comes in several profiles: round, square, star, and twisted. Round line is the most common and works well for general grass trimming. Square and star shapes cut more aggressively, making them ideal for thick weeds and brush. Twisted line reduces drag and noise, which can extend the life of the motor on electric models.
Line Diameter and Shape
Diameter typically ranges from 0.065 in for light‑duty residential trimmers to 0.155 in for commercial brush cutters. Thicker line lasts longer but demands more power to spin. Matching the line diameter to your trimmer’s specifications prevents excessive wear on the drive shaft and ensures the head feeds correctly.
Why Proper Knots Matter
A secure knot anchors the line to the spool or the head’s eyelet, preventing the line from pulling free under centrifugal force. When the knot fails, the line retracts into the head, causing the trimmer to stall or the line to feed unevenly. Proper knots also distribute stress evenly across the line’s cross‑section, reducing premature breakage at the knot point.
Common Knots for Weed Eater Line
Simple Overhand Knot
The overhand knot is the quickest to tie and works well on bump‑feed heads where the line is threaded through a single eyelet. It provides moderate holding power but can loosen if the line is repeatedly pulled tight and released.
Double Overhand Knot
Adding a second turn creates a double overhand knot, which roughly doubles the friction surface. This knot is a solid middle ground for both bump‑feed and fixed‑head trimmers, offering better security without a steep learning curve.
Figure‑Eight Knot
The figure‑eight knot is favored by climbers for its strength and ease of inspection. On a trimmer, it resists slipping under high RPM and is simple to untie after a season of use, making line changes faster.
Anchor Knot
Fixed‑head trimmers often require an anchor knot that locks the line around a metal post or a recessed slot. The anchor knot (sometimes called a “trimmer knot”) wraps the line around the post twice before finishing with a half hitch, creating a mechanical lock that won’t spin free.
Step‑by‑Step: Simple Overhand Knot
- Cut a length of line about 12 in longer than the spool’s recommended fill length.
- Thread one end through the eyelet or spool hole, leaving a 2‑in tail.
- Form a loop with the standing part of the line.
- Pass the tail through the loop from front to back.
- Pull both the standing part and the tail to snug the knot against the eyelet.
- Trim the excess tail to about ¼ in to avoid snagging.
Step‑by‑Step: Double Overhand Knot
- Measure and cut the line as described above.
- Thread the line through the eyelet, leaving a 3‑in tail for the extra turn.
- Make a loop with the standing part, then pass the tail through the loop twice (two full turns).
- Hold the standing part steady and pull the tail to tighten the double coil.
- Slide the knot snug against the eyelet, ensuring both turns sit side by side.
- Trim the tail to ¼ in.
Step‑by‑Step: Anchor Knot for Fixed‑Head Trimmers
- Cut the line to the manufacturer’s specified length plus 6 in for the anchor wraps.
- Insert the line through the anchor post or slot, leaving a 4‑in tail on the opposite side.
- Wrap the tail around the post two full turns, moving away from the head body.
- After the second wrap, bring the tail back toward the head and form a half hitch around the standing part.
- Pull the half hitch tight, then add a second half hitch for extra security.
- Trim the remaining tail to ¼ in and verify the line pulls freely when the head spins.
Comparison Table of Knot Strength and Ease
| Knot | Holding Strength (1‑5) | Ease of Tying (1‑5) | Best Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simple Overhand | 2 | 5 | Bump‑feed heads, light residential use |
| Double Overhand | 3 | 4 | General purpose, both bump‑feed and fixed‑head |
| Figure‑Eight | 4 | 3 | High‑RPM commercial trimmers, frequent line changes |
| Anchor Knot | 5 | 2 | Fixed‑head trimmers with metal anchor posts |
Tips for Long‑Lasting Line Performance
- Store line in a cool, dry place; UV exposure makes nylon brittle.
- Soak new line in water for 10 minutes before spooling; it reduces memory and feeds smoother.
- Match line diameter exactly to the trimmer’s spec; oversized line stresses the motor.
- Wind the line evenly on the spool, avoiding overlaps that cause jams.
- Inspect the eyelet or anchor post for burrs; smooth them with fine sandpaper to prevent line abrasion.
- Replace the line at the start of each season rather than waiting for it to break.
Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
- Using the wrong knot for the head type – Bump‑feed heads need a knot that can slide slightly; fixed heads need a locking anchor knot. Choose accordingly.
- Leaving too much tail – Long tails catch on debris and unravel the knot. Trim to ¼ in after tightening.
- Over‑tightening the knot – Excessive force can deform the line’s cross‑section, creating a weak spot. Snug is enough.
- Ignoring line direction – Some spools have a directional arrow; winding opposite the arrow causes the line to feed backward.
- Mixing line shapes on the same spool – Different profiles feed at different rates, leading to uneven cutting.
Maintaining Your Trimmer Head After Re‑Stringing
After you have tied the line and re‑assembled the head, run the trimmer at low speed for a few seconds. Watch the line feed; it should extend evenly from both sides on a dual‑line head. If one side feeds faster, stop and re‑check the knot tension and spool winding. Clean the head’s exterior after each use to prevent grass buildup that can impede the bump mechanism. Lubricate the spool shaft lightly with a silicone spray once per season to keep rotation smooth.
Frequently Asked Questions
What knot is best for a bump‑feed trimmer?
A double overhand knot offers a good balance of security and ease of tying for bump‑feed heads. It holds well under the repeated pull‑release cycle of the bump mechanism.
Can I use fishing line knots on my trimmer?
Many fishing knots (e.g., improved clinch, Palomar) work because they are designed for high‑strength nylon. However, they are often bulkier than necessary and can interfere with the head’s eyelet. Stick with the simpler knots described here unless you have a specific reason to use a fishing knot.
How often should I replace the line?
For typical residential use, replace the line at the beginning of each mowing season or after every 20‑30 hours of operation. Commercial users may need to re‑string weekly.
Why does my line keep breaking at the knot?
Breakage at the knot usually indicates a sharp edge on the eyelet or anchor post, an over‑tightened knot that creates a stress concentration, or a line diameter that is too large for the head. Inspect and smooth the metal surfaces, and ensure you are using the correct line size.
Is it necessary to soak the line before spooling?
Soaking is not mandatory, but it relaxes the line’s memory, making it feed more consistently and reducing the chance of kinks that lead to premature breakage.
Conclusion
Mastering how to tie weed eater line with the right knot for your trimmer type transforms a frustrating chore into a quick, reliable routine. By understanding line types, selecting the appropriate knot—whether a simple overhand, double overhand, figure‑eight, or anchor knot—and following the step‑by‑step instructions, you ensure secure attachment and smooth feeding every time you trim. Pair these techniques with proper storage, regular inspection, and the maintenance tips outlined above, and your string trimmer will stay ready for action season after season.
