Understanding Your Weed Eater

Types of Weed Eaters

Weed eaters—also called string trimmers—come in three main power categories. Gas models deliver the most power and run time, making them ideal for large, overgrown areas. Battery‑operated units offer quiet operation and zero emissions, perfect for residential yards. Corded electric trimmers provide consistent power without the weight of a battery but require an outlet and extension cord. Each type uses a similar spool‑and‑line system, though the spool access method may differ slightly.

String Types and Diameters

Trimmer line is available in round, square, twisted, and serrated profiles. Round line is the most common and works well for general grass and light weeds. Square and twisted lines have sharper edges that cut thicker stems more cleanly. Serrated line adds a saw‑like action for heavy brush. Diameter typically ranges from 0.065 in (light duty) to 0.155 in (heavy duty). Always consult your owner’s manual for the maximum line diameter your head can accept; using oversized line can jam the feed mechanism and damage the motor.

Tools and Materials Needed

Before you begin, gather the following items:

• Replacement trimmer line (correct diameter and length)
• Protective gloves
• Safety glasses
• Flat‑head screwdriver or the tool supplied with your trimmer (often a “spool release” key)
• Clean rag or brush for debris removal
• Measuring tape or a pre‑measured line spool

Having everything at hand prevents interruptions and ensures a smooth reload.

Safety Precautions

Safety should never be an afterthought. Follow these rules every time you service the trimmer:

1. Power off completely. For gas models, disconnect the spark plug wire. For battery units, remove the battery pack. For corded models, unplug the power cord.
2. Wear eye protection. Small line fragments can snap back at high speed.
3. Use gloves. They protect your hands from sharp edges on the spool and from any residual fuel or oil.
4. Work on a stable surface. Place the trimmer on a workbench or the ground with the cutting head facing up.
5. Keep bystanders away. Ensure children and pets are at a safe distance while you handle the line.

These steps eliminate the risk of accidental starts and protect you from flying debris.

Step‑by‑Step Guide: How to Feed a Weed Eater String

Step 1: Power Off and Disconnect

Confirm the trimmer is completely de‑energized. On gas engines, pull the spark plug boot off the plug. On battery units, slide the release latch and remove the pack. On corded models, unplug from the outlet. Double‑check that the trigger does not engage the motor.

Step 2: Remove the Spool

Locate the spool release mechanism. Most heads have a push‑button, a twist‑lock, or a small screw. Press or turn the release while holding the outer housing steady. Lift the spool straight out. If the spool is stuck, gently tap the housing with a rubber mallet to free any debris.

Step 3: Clean the Spool Housing

Use a brush or compressed air to remove grass clippings, dirt, and old line fragments from the housing interior. A clean housing prevents the new line from binding and ensures the feed spring operates freely.

Step 4: Measure and Cut New Line

Refer to the manual for the recommended line length—typically 10–25 feet per side for dual‑line heads. Pull the line from the bulk spool, measure the required length, and cut cleanly with scissors or a utility knife. Cutting at a slight angle helps the line feed into the eyelets more easily.

Step 5: Load the Line onto the Spool

Identify the winding direction arrows molded into the spool. Insert one end of the line into the anchor hole or notch, then wind the line tightly and evenly in the indicated direction. Keep tension consistent to avoid overlaps or gaps. For dual‑line spools, repeat the process for the second line, using the opposite anchor point. Leave about 6 inches of line protruding from each eyelet for the initial feed.

Step 6: Reinstall the Spool

Align the spool with the housing guides and press it back into place. Engage the release mechanism—push the button, twist the lock, or tighten the screw—until you hear a click. Verify that the spool rotates freely by hand; it should spin without resistance.

Step 7: Test the Feed

Reconnect power (spark plug, battery, or cord). Start the trimmer and let it run at low speed. Tap the head on the ground (bump feed) or engage the automatic feed button, depending on your model. The line should advance smoothly. If it does not, power down and re‑inspect the winding direction and tension.

Quick Reload Tips for Different Head Types

Bump Feed Heads

Bump feed (or “tap‑and‑go”) heads release line when you lightly tap the cutting head on the ground while the engine runs. To reload quickly, keep a pre‑measured length of line in a pocket or tool belt. After removing the spool, you can wind the new line directly on the spool without fully removing it from the housing on some models—just pull the old line out, insert the new line, and wind.

Automatic Feed Heads

Automatic feed heads use a centrifugal mechanism that advances line when the motor reaches a certain RPM. These heads often have a “quick‑load” window: open the cover, feed the line through the eyelets, and close the cover. No winding is required, but you must ensure the line sits correctly in the guide slots.

Fixed‑Line (Pre‑Cut) Heads

Fixed‑line heads accept pre‑cut lengths of line that snap into place. Reloading is as simple as pulling the old pieces out and inserting new ones. Keep a supply of pre‑cut line in the correct diameter for the fastest turnaround.

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Even experienced users can fall into habits that shorten line life or cause feed problems. Here are the most frequent errors and their fixes:

• Over‑filling the spool. Packing too much line creates tension that prevents the feed spring from releasing line. Wind only the recommended length.
• Winding in the wrong direction. Most spools have arrows; winding opposite to the arrow causes the line to unwind during operation. Always follow the molded arrows.
• Using the wrong diameter. Line that is too thick jams the eyelets; line that is too thin wears out quickly. Match the diameter to the head specifications.
• Neglecting to clean the housing. Debris buildup binds the spool and can cause the motor to overheat. Clean the housing every reload.
• Skipping the test run. Failing to verify feed after reassembly leads to frustration mid‑job. Always do a quick test before tackling the lawn.

Maintenance Tips for Longer Line Life

Proper care extends both the line and the trimmer head:

• Store bulk line in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight; UV exposure makes line brittle.
• After each use, wipe the cutting head and spool housing to remove sap and grass residue.
• Inspect the feed spring and eyelets for wear each season; replace worn parts promptly.
• Sharpen or replace the line when you notice frayed ends; a sharp line cuts cleaner and reduces engine load.
• Lubricate the spool shaft lightly with a silicone spray if the manufacturer recommends it; avoid petroleum‑based oils that can degrade plastic.

Troubleshooting Feed Issues

If the line refuses to advance, consider these common causes:

• Line tangled inside the spool. Remove the spool, unwind, and rewind with even tension.
• Eyelet blockage. Grass or debris lodged in the eyelet prevents line exit. Clear with a thin wire or compressed air.
• Weak feed spring. Over time the spring loses tension. Replace the spring or the entire head if replacement parts are unavailable.
• Incorrect line diameter. Verify the line matches the head’s maximum rating.
• Motor RPM too low. Automatic feed heads need sufficient centrifugal force. Ensure the engine is running at proper speed; clean the air filter and spark plug if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I replace the trimmer line?

Replace the line whenever it becomes frayed, breaks frequently, or no longer cuts cleanly. For average residential use, a fresh spool every 2–3 months is typical, but heavy‑duty work may require weekly changes.

Can I use any brand of line in my weed eater?

Yes, as long as the diameter and profile match the specifications in your owner’s manual. Using a reputable brand ensures consistent quality and reduces the chance of jams.

Why does my line keep breaking?

Frequent breakage usually indicates the line is too thin for the vegetation, the spool is over‑wound, or the eyelets are damaged. Upgrade to a thicker or more durable profile and inspect the head for sharp edges.

Is it okay to mix line profiles on a dual‑line head?

Mixing profiles is not recommended. Different shapes feed at different rates, causing uneven wear and potential feed errors. Use the same profile on both sides.

How do I know which way to wind the line?

Look for molded arrows on the spool or housing. If arrows are absent, wind the line so that it feeds out of the eyelet in the direction the head rotates (usually counter‑clockwise when viewed from the top).
