Understanding Your Troy Bilt Weed Eater

Troy Bilt offers a wide range of weed eaters, including gas-powered, electric corded, and battery-powered models, designed for everything from small residential yards to large commercial properties. The most critical component for string maintenance is the trimmer head, which comes in three main types: bump feed, automatic feed, and fixed line. Most modern Troy Bilt models use either bump feed or automatic feed heads, which are designed to let you add more string without replacing the entire spool. Fixed line heads, found on older or entry-level models, require full spool replacement when the line runs out, as they do not have a built-in feed mechanism. Knowing which type of head your Troy Bilt weed eater has is the first step to properly feeding or replacing its string, as the process varies slightly between head types.

How Troy Bilt Weed Eater String Feeding Works

Before learning how to feed a Troy Bilt weed eater, it’s helpful to understand how the string feed mechanism operates. Bump feed heads, the most common type on residential Troy Bilt models, use a simple mechanical system: when you tap the bottom of the head on the ground while the trimmer is running, a small clutch releases a pre-measured length of line from the spool inside the head. This design gives you full control over how much line you release, making it ideal for most residential trimming tasks where you may need to adjust line length frequently.

Automatic feed heads, common on higher-end and commercial Troy Bilt models, use a centrifugal mechanism that senses when the trimmer is moving back and forth during use. When the head detects that the line is worn down, it automatically releases a small amount of new line without requiring you to bump the head on the ground. This design is ideal for large areas where you want to trim continuously without stopping to adjust the line. It’s important to note that feeding string is a separate process from full string replacement: feeding adds more line to an existing spool when the line runs low, while replacement swaps out the entire spool when the line is completely used up, frayed, or damaged.

When to Feed or Replace Your Weed Eater String

Knowing when to feed your line versus replacing the entire spool will save you time and prevent damage to your trimmer. You should feed your Troy Bilt weed eater string when the existing line is shorter than 2 to 3 inches, or when you notice a drop in cutting efficiency. Feeding the line regularly extends the life of the spool, so you won’t need to replace it as often. Most residential users need to feed their line every 1 to 2 uses, or every 30 to 45 minutes of continuous heavy trimming.

You will need to fully replace the spool and string if the line is frayed, broken, or tangled, if the line has worn down to the plastic core of the spool, or if the spool itself is cracked or damaged. Attempting to feed a spool that is already at the end of its life will result in frequent jams, poor cutting performance, and potential damage to the trimmer head. If you notice that feeding the line no longer releases enough length to cut effectively, it’s time to replace the entire spool.

Tools and Materials You’ll Need

Before you start feeding or replacing your Troy Bilt weed eater string, gather the following tools and supplies to make the process quick and easy:

• Replacement trimmer line: Make sure to purchase line that matches the diameter, shape, and material specifications listed in your owner’s manual. Common diameters for Troy Bilt models are .065 inches for light-duty use, .080 inches for medium-duty use, and .095 inches for heavy-duty use.
• Work gloves: Trim line is extremely sharp and can cause serious cuts to your hands, especially when handling new line or removing old, frayed line.
• Safety glasses: Protect your eyes from flying debris, especially when testing the trimmer after maintenance.
• Flathead screwdriver: Required for some Troy Bilt models to remove the spool retaining nut.
• Wire cutters: For trimming excess line to the correct length after feeding or replacing.
• Clean rag: For wiping away grass clippings, dirt, and debris from the trimmer head.
• Optional: Line winder tool: This inexpensive tool makes winding line onto the spool faster and more even, reducing the risk of tangles.

Step-by-Step: How to Feed a Troy Bilt Weed Eater

Feeding your Troy Bilt weed eater is a quick process that takes 5 to 10 minutes, and it will extend the life of your spool significantly. Follow these steps to feed your string correctly:

1. Disconnect the power source: For gas-powered models, remove the spark plug wire to prevent accidental startup. For electric corded models, unplug the trimmer from the outlet. For battery-powered models, remove the battery pack. Wear work gloves and safety glasses before proceeding to protect yourself from sharp line edges.
2. Locate the string feed opening: Turn the weed eater upside down and look at the bottom of the trimmer head. Bump feed heads have a small circular or oval opening on the underside where you insert new line. Automatic feed heads do not have an external opening, so you will need to remove the spool to add more line (see the replacement section below for automatic feed spool feeding instructions).
3. Measure the correct length of line: Cut a 10 to 15 foot length of replacement trimmer line, depending on your model’s specifications. Check your owner’s manual for the exact recommended length, as using too much line can cause jams and excess strain on the engine.
4. Insert the line into the feed opening: Insert one end of the line into the feed opening, pushing it through the internal spool until it emerges from the opposite side of the opening. Make sure the line is seated fully in the spool so it doesn’t slip out during use.
5. Pull the line taut and test the feed: Pull the free end of the line to remove any slack, then hold the spool in place to prevent it from unwinding. Reconnect the power source, turn on the trimmer, and bump the head on the ground 2 to 3 times to release a few inches of line. Trim a small patch of grass to confirm the line is feeding properly and cutting evenly.

If you have an automatic feed head, you will need to remove the spool to add more line, following the same winding steps as a full replacement (see the next section) but without replacing the entire spool.

Step-by-Step: Troy Bilt Weed Eater String Replacement

When your trimmer line is completely worn out, frayed, or the spool is damaged, you’ll need to replace the entire spool of string. This process takes 15 to 20 minutes, and it will restore your weed eater to like-new cutting performance. Follow these steps to replace your Troy Bilt weed eater string:

1. Disconnect the power source and wear safety gear: Just like with feeding, remove the spark plug wire, unplug the trimmer, or remove the battery to prevent accidental startup. Wear work gloves and safety glasses to protect yourself from sharp line edges and flying debris.
2. Remove the old spool: Turn the weed eater upside down and locate the retaining nut or button on the bottom of the trimmer head. For most models, turn the retaining nut counterclockwise with your hand or a flathead screwdriver to loosen it. Press the retaining button (if your model has one) to release the spool. Pull the old spool straight out of the head.
3. Clean the trimmer head cavity: Use a clean, dry rag to wipe away all grass clippings, dirt, and old line debris from inside the head cavity. Buildup of debris can cause jams and prevent the new line from feeding properly, so make sure the cavity is completely clean before proceeding.
4. Wind the new line onto the spool: First, check the spool for an arrow indicating the correct winding direction – winding the line in the wrong direction will prevent it from feeding properly. For single-line spools, cut a 10 to 15 foot length of line, insert one end into the feed hole on the spool, and wind the line evenly in the correct direction, leaving 6 to 8 inches of line sticking out of the feed hole. For dual-line spools (common on many Troy Bilt models), cut two equal lengths of line, insert each end into separate feed holes on the spool, and wind both lines evenly in the correct direction, making sure they do not overlap as you wind. Do not overwind the spool, as this will cause the line to tangle or jam.
5. Reinstall the spool: Align the tabs on the spool with the slots in the trimmer head, then push the spool straight into the head until it clicks into place. Reattach the retaining nut or button, tightening it clockwise by hand until it is snug. Do not overtighten the nut, as this can crack the plastic trimmer head and lead to costly repairs.
6. Test the new string: Reconnect the power source, turn on the trimmer, and bump the head 2 to 3 times to release the correct length of line. Trim a small patch of grass to confirm the line is feeding evenly and cutting properly. If the line does not feed, remove the spool and check that it is wound in the correct direction and seated properly in the head.

Choosing the Right String for Your Troy Bilt Model

Using the correct trimmer line for your Troy Bilt weed eater is critical for optimal performance and to avoid damaging your tool. The wrong line can jam the feed mechanism, wear out the engine faster, and reduce cutting efficiency. When selecting replacement line, refer to your owner’s manual for the recommended diameter, shape, and material for your specific model. The table below compares the most common types of trimmer line to help you choose the right option for your needs:

In addition to shape and material, you’ll need to select the correct diameter for your model. Smaller diameters (.065 inches) are best for light-duty electric or battery-powered models, while larger diameters (.080 or .095 inches) are better for gas-powered models and heavy-duty trimming. Using a line that is too thick for your model will overload the engine and cause the feed mechanism to jam, while a line that is too thin will break frequently and wear out quickly.

Tips for Longer String Life and Better Performance

With proper care and maintenance, you can extend the life of your trimmer line and keep your Troy Bilt weed eater running smoothly for years. Follow these best practices to get the most out of your tool:

• Always use the exact string diameter, shape, and material recommended in your owner’s manual to avoid excess wear on the trimmer head and engine.
• Avoid trimming against hard surfaces like concrete, rocks, tree trunks, and fence posts, as these surfaces fray and break line extremely quickly.
• Keep the line at the recommended length (usually 6 to 8 inches) for optimal cutting efficiency. Longer line puts unnecessary strain on the engine, reduces fuel efficiency for gas models, and causes uneven cutting.
• Clean the trimmer head after each use to remove grass clippings, dirt, and debris that can cause jamming or corrosion of the internal mechanism.
• Store your weed eater in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight to prevent the line from becoming brittle and the head from rusting.
• For gas-powered models, always use fresh, high-quality fuel to prevent engine strain that can damage the string feed mechanism over time.
• If you notice the line jamming frequently, wipe it down with a dry cloth before winding it onto the spool to remove any dust or debris that could cause tangles.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Many homeowners make simple mistakes when feeding or replacing their Troy Bilt weed eater string that can lead to jams, poor performance, and costly repairs. Avoid these common errors to keep your tool running smoothly:

• Using the wrong string size or type: This is the most common mistake, and it can cause the line to jam, break frequently, or damage the trimmer head. Always check your owner’s manual for the correct specifications before purchasing replacement line. Avoid very cheap, low-quality line, as it frays quickly and can damage internal components.
• Overwinding the spool: Winding the line too tightly or adding too much line to the spool will cause it to tangle or jam the feed mechanism. Wind the line evenly in the correct direction, leaving only 6 to 8 inches of line sticking out of the feed holes.
• Overtightening the retaining nut: The retaining nut only needs to be snug to hold the spool in place. Overtightening it can crack the plastic trimmer head, leading to costly repairs that could have been avoided.
• Letting line wear down to the core: Allowing the line to wear all the way down to the plastic core of the spool before feeding or replacing it can damage the spool and the feed mechanism. Feed the line when it is still 2 to 3 inches long to avoid this issue.
• Skipping safety precautions: Trim line is razor-sharp and can cause deep cuts, and accidental startup can lead to serious injury. Always disconnect the power source and wear protective gear before performing any maintenance on your weed eater.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Even with proper maintenance, you may occasionally run into issues with your Troy Bilt weed eater’s string feed. Use this guide to diagnose and fix common problems quickly:

1. Line won’t feed: First, check if the line is wound in the correct direction on the spool, as a backwards-wound spool will not feed. Next, check if the feed opening or internal mechanism is blocked with grass or debris – clear any blockages with a small tool or compressed air. If the bump feed mechanism is stuck, lubricate it with a small amount of silicone spray to loosen it.
2. Line breaks frequently: This is almost always caused by using the wrong string type, trimming against hard surfaces, or using line that is too long. Switch to the correct string for your model, avoid trimming near concrete or rocks, and adjust the line length to the recommended 6 to 8 inches.
3. Line feeds too much when bumped: If your model has an adjustable bump feed setting, turn it to release less line per bump. If there is no adjustment, wind the line slightly tighter on the spool to reduce the amount released per bump.
4. Uneven cutting: Check if the line is worn down unevenly on one side, if the spool is installed incorrectly, or if you are using the wrong line diameter. Replace the spool if the line is uneven, reinstall the spool to make sure it is seated properly, and verify you are using the correct line size for your model.
5. Head jams: Jams are usually caused by overwound line, tangled line, or debris in the head cavity. Remove the spool, untangle any line, clean the head thoroughly, and rewind the line correctly before reinstalling the spool.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I feed my Troy Bilt weed eater?

The frequency of feeding depends on how often you use your trimmer and the type of vegetation you are cutting. For light residential trimming of grass and small weeds, you will likely need to feed the line every 1 to 2 uses, or every 30 to 45 minutes of continuous use. If you are cutting thick brush or overgrown weeds, you may need to feed the line every 15 to 20 minutes, as the line wears down much faster when cutting tough vegetation. Always check the line length before each use to see if it needs additional feed.

Can I use third-party replacement string for my Troy Bilt weed eater?

Yes, you can use third-party replacement string as long as it matches the diameter, shape, and material specifications listed in your owner’s manual. Many high-quality third-party trimmer lines work just as well as OEM Troy Bilt line, and they are often more affordable. Avoid very cheap, low-quality line, as it frays quickly, breaks frequently, and can damage your trimmer head over time.

What happens if I use the wrong string size?

Using a string that is too thick for your model will jam the feed mechanism, damage the spool, and put excess strain on the engine, which can lead to premature wear or even engine failure. Using a string that is too thin will break frequently, reduce cutting efficiency, and may not stay seated in the spool, leading to jams. Using the wrong size can also void your Troy Bilt warranty if it causes damage to the tool, so always follow the manufacturer’s recommended specifications for your specific model.

How do I know if my Troy Bilt weed eater has a bump feed or automatic feed head?

The easiest way to tell is to look at the bottom of the trimmer head: bump feed heads have a small circular or oval opening for inserting new line, and you will need to tap the head on the ground to release line during use. Automatic feed heads have no external opening, and line releases automatically when you move the trimmer back and forth. You can also check your owner’s manual for the head type, or look up your model number online to confirm.

Can I feed string to a Troy Bilt weed eater with a fixed line head?

No, fixed line heads do not have a built-in feed mechanism, so you cannot add more line to an existing spool. If you have a fixed line head, you will need to replace the entire pre-wound spool when the existing line is worn out. Fixed line heads are less common on modern Troy Bilt models, but if you have an older model with a fixed head, you can purchase replacement spools from Troy Bilt to make replacement faster and easier.
