Understanding the Stihl AutoCut System

The AutoCut head is a semi‑automatic line‑feeding system designed to reduce the need for manual bumping. Inside the head, a spring‑loaded spool holds a pre‑measured length of cutting line. When the line wears down, the centrifugal force generated by the spinning head automatically advances a fresh segment. This design offers two major advantages: consistent line length for even cutting and less operator fatigue because you do not have to tap the head on the ground. However, the AutoCut head still requires periodic refilling when the spool is exhausted, and the refill procedure differs slightly from traditional bump‑feed models.

Stihl offers several AutoCut variants, such as the AutoCut C 26‑2, AutoCut 25‑2, and AutoCut 5‑2, each matched to specific trimmer models and line diameters. Before purchasing replacement line, verify the model number on the head housing and consult the owner’s manual for the recommended line gauge—typically 0.080 in (2.0 mm) or 0.095 in (2.4 mm). Using the correct diameter ensures proper feeding and prevents jamming or excessive wear on the drive shaft.

Tools and Materials Needed

Gather the following items before you begin the refill. Having everything at hand eliminates interruptions and reduces the chance of losing small components.

• Replacement cutting line (correct diameter and length for your AutoCut model)
• Clean work surface or bench
• Gloves (nitrile or leather) to protect hands from sharp line ends
• Safety glasses
• Small adjustable wrench or the Stihl‑provided spanner (if the head uses a retaining nut)
• Owner’s manual for reference diagrams

Optional but helpful: a line‑cutting tool or sharp scissors for trimming the line to the exact length specified by the manufacturer.

Safety Precautions

Before any maintenance on a gasoline‑ or battery‑powered trimmer, observe these safety steps to protect yourself and the equipment.

1. Turn off the engine and allow the trimmer to cool completely.
2. Disconnect the spark plug wire (gas models) or remove the battery pack (cordless models) to prevent accidental starts.
3. Wear safety glasses and gloves at all times.
4. Secure the trimmer on a stable surface; a vise with soft jaws works well.
5. Keep the work area clear of bystanders, pets, and flammable materials.

Following these precautions eliminates the risk of injury from rotating parts or sudden engine ignition.

Step‑by‑Step Refill Guide

The refill process consists of four main phases: removing the old spool, preparing the new line, loading the AutoCut head, and reassembling the trimmer. Follow each step in order for a smooth, trouble‑free experience.

Removing the Old Spool

1. Locate the retaining nut or quick‑release button on the AutoCut head. Most Stihl models use a left‑hand thread nut that loosens counter‑clockwise.
2. Using the appropriate wrench or the supplied spanner, turn the nut counter‑clockwise until it releases. If your model has a push‑button release, press firmly and pull the head away from the drive shaft.
3. Slide the head off the shaft. The spool will remain inside the head housing.
4. Open the head housing by separating the two halves. Some models snap together; others have a small latch. Refer to the manual for the exact method.
5. Remove the empty spool and discard any remaining line fragments.

Preparing the New Line

1. Unroll the replacement line and measure the length specified for your AutoCut model (usually 15–20 ft / 4.5–6 m). Cut cleanly with scissors or a line cutter.
2. Find the center of the line by folding it in half. This midpoint will sit in the spool’s anchor slot.
3. If the line has a pre‑formed loop or eyelet, ensure it faces outward for easy insertion.

Loading the AutoCut Head

1. Place the spool on a flat surface with the anchor slot facing up.
2. Insert the midpoint of the line into the anchor slot, pulling both ends evenly so the line sits snugly.
3. Wind the line onto the spool in the direction indicated by the arrow on the spool (usually clockwise). Keep tension consistent to avoid overlapping or gaps.
4. Leave the last 6–8 in (15–20 cm) of each line end free; these tails will feed through the eyelets on the head housing.
5. Snap the spool back into the head housing, ensuring the line tails exit through the designated eyelets.
6. Rejoin the two halves of the head housing, confirming the latch or snap engages fully.

Reassembling and Testing

1. Slide the loaded head onto the drive shaft, aligning any keyways or splines.
2. Thread the retaining nut onto the shaft by hand, then tighten with the wrench to the torque specified in the manual (typically 8–10 Nm).
3. Reconnect the spark plug wire or reinstall the battery pack.
4. Start the trimmer and let it idle. Gently tap the head on grass to verify automatic line feed.
5. If the line does not advance, stop the engine, re‑inspect the spool orientation, and repeat the loading steps.

Comparison: AutoCut vs. Traditional Bump Feed

Choosing between an AutoCut head and a conventional bump‑feed head depends on your cutting style, frequency of use, and preference for maintenance. The table below highlights key differences to help you decide.

Both systems are reliable when maintained properly. The AutoCut head shines in high‑volume work where uninterrupted cutting saves time, while the bump‑feed head remains a cost‑effective choice for lighter tasks.

Tips for Optimal Performance

• Use genuine Stihl line: Aftermarket line may have inconsistent diameter or brittleness, leading to feeding problems.
• Store line in a cool, dry place: UV exposure and moisture degrade nylon, causing premature breakage.
• Inspect the eyelets regularly: Worn or cracked eyelets snag the line and impede automatic feed.
• Clean the head after each use: Grass clippings and debris can accumulate inside the housing, affecting spring tension.
• Lubricate the drive shaft splines lightly: A thin film of marine‑grade grease reduces wear and eases head removal.
• Replace the entire spool annually: Even if line remains, the spool’s spring can fatigue, reducing feed reliability.

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Even experienced users can slip up during a refill. Below are the most frequent errors and practical solutions.

• Wrong line diameter: Always match the line gauge to the head specification. Using a thicker line jams the feed; a thinner line wears out quickly.
• Over‑winding the spool: Excessive tension causes the line to bind. Wind with moderate, even pressure and stop when the spool is full but not bulging.
• Reversing wind direction: The arrow on the spool indicates the correct winding direction. Winding opposite prevents the centrifugal feed from engaging.
• Forgetting to leave tail length: Tails shorter than 6 in may not reach the eyelets, resulting in no feed. Measure before cutting.
• Neglecting to secure the retaining nut: A loose nut allows the head to wobble, damaging the drive shaft and causing vibration. Torque to spec.
• Skipping safety steps: Working on a hot or powered trimmer risks severe injury. Always disconnect power and wait for cooling.

Maintenance and Storage Advice

Proper care extends the life of both the AutoCut head and the trimmer itself. After each use, wipe the head housing with a dry cloth to remove sap and debris. Periodically apply a light coat of silicone spray to the eyelets to keep line movement smooth. When storing the trimmer for the off‑season, remove the line spool, clean the head thoroughly, and store the unit in a dry, temperature‑controlled environment. If you own a gas model, add fuel stabilizer to the tank and run the engine briefly to circulate treated fuel. For battery models, store the battery at 40–60 % charge in a cool location.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I refill the AutoCut head?

Refill frequency depends on cutting conditions and line diameter. In typical residential use with 0.080 in line, a full spool lasts 30–45 minutes of continuous trimming. Heavy brush or commercial work may require refilling every 15–20 minutes.

Can I use any brand of trimmer line in my Stihl AutoCut head?

While many third‑party lines fit physically, Stihl engineers the line’s flexibility and melt point to match the AutoCut spring tension. Using non‑Stihl line can cause irregular feed or premature wear. For best results, stick with genuine Stihl line.

Why does my trimmer head wobble after refilling?

Wobble usually indicates the retaining nut is not torqued to specification or the head is not fully seated on the drive shaft splines. Re‑check alignment, tighten the nut to the recommended torque, and verify the head sits flush.

What causes the line to break immediately after feeding?

Immediate breakage often results from using line that is too brittle (old or UV‑damaged) or from a damaged eyelet that creates a sharp edge. Inspect the eyelets for cracks and replace the line with a fresh spool stored properly.

Can I upgrade a bump‑feed trimmer to an AutoCut head?

Many Stihl trimmer models accept an AutoCut head as a direct replacement, but you must verify compatibility by model number. The upgrade kit includes the head, spool, and any required adapters. Consult your dealer or the Stihl parts catalog before purchasing.
