Why String Replacement Matters

Trimmer line is the workhorse of any string trimmer, and worn or depleted line directly impacts your productivity. A properly wound spool ensures smooth, consistent line feed during operation, reducing the need for manual intervention. When the line becomes too short, you lose cutting reach and efficiency. When it tangles or binds inside the housing, the trimmer may fail to feed at all, leaving you with a tool that spins but does not cut.

Regular string replacement also prevents damage to the trimmer head and motor. Running with an improperly fed line can cause the spool to bind, placing unnecessary strain on internal components. By maintaining fresh, correctly wound line, you protect your investment and maintain professional-grade results in your yard work.

Tools and Supplies Needed

Before beginning the winding process, gather the following items to ensure a smooth and efficient replacement:

• New trimmer line compatible with your Homelite model
• Flathead or Phillips head screwdriver (depending on your model)
• Clean cloth or brush for removing debris
• Small container for holding screws and small parts
• Optional: Compressed air or canned air for deep cleaning

Having all supplies on hand prevents interruptions and reduces the risk of losing small components during disassembly.

Identifying Your Homelite Model

Homelite produces several weed eater models, each with slightly different spool designs and line capacities. Locate the model number on the engine housing or the trimmer head assembly. Common series include the Homelite UT, Homelite Super, and Homelite Easy Feed lines.

The model number determines the correct line diameter and length specifications. Using the wrong size can result in poor feeding, excessive wear, or failure to fit the spool properly. If you are unsure, consult your owner’s manual or the manufacturer’s website for exact specifications.

Preparation Steps

Always start with a safe and clean workspace. Follow these preparation steps before removing the old string:

1. Disconnect the spark plug wire to prevent accidental starting while working.
2. Place the trimmer on a stable surface such as a workbench or sturdy table.
3. Remove the battery or disconnect the power source if working on an electric model.
4. Wear safety gloves to protect your hands from sharp line and debris.
5. Gather your tools within easy reach to avoid searching during disassembly.

These precautions minimize the risk of injury and ensure you have full control over the process.

Removing the Old String

The method for accessing the spool varies by model, but the general process remains consistent. Follow these steps to safely remove the old line:

1. Locate the spool release mechanism on the trimmer head. This may be a button, tab, or screw-on cover.
2. Press or turn the release according to your model’s instructions. Some spools twist off, while others require pressing a retention clip.
3. Lift the spool straight out of the housing once the release is disengaged.
4. Remove any remaining line from the spool and the housing. Check for tangles or knots that may have formed.

If resistance is encountered, do not force the spool. Re-examine the release mechanism or refer to your manual for model-specific guidance.

Cleaning the Spool

A clean spool is essential for proper line feeding and long-term reliability. Over time, grass clippings, dirt, and debris accumulate inside the housing and on the spool itself. Use the following approach to clean thoroughly:

1. Inspect the spool for damage such as cracks, grooves, or worn areas that could interfere with line flow.
2. Remove debris with a cloth or soft brush to clear loose material from the spool and housing.
3. Use compressed air if available to blow out stubborn dirt from hard-to-reach areas.
4. Check the line guides and exit holes for blockages that could restrict line movement.

Replace the spool entirely if significant wear or damage is observed. A damaged spool will not hold line effectively regardless of winding technique.

Selecting the Right String

Choosing the correct trimmer line is critical to achieving optimal performance. Homelite recommends specific line diameters for each model, typically ranging from 0.065 inches to 0.095 inches. Refer to your owner’s manual or the label on the trimmer head for the exact specification.

String thickness affects both cutting performance and line consumption. Thicker line cuts through tougher vegetation but feeds more slowly and wears faster. Thinner line feeds quickly and works well on light trimming tasks but may break under heavy use. Select a line that matches your typical trimming conditions and the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Popular line materials include nylon co-polymer, which offers durability and resistance to fraying, and reinforced core lines designed for extended life in demanding applications.

Winding the New String

Proper winding technique prevents tangles and ensures smooth line deployment. Follow this step-by-step guide to wind a new spool correctly:

1. Cut a length of new line appropriate for your spool size. Most Homelite models require between 10 and 20 feet of line, depending on spool capacity.
2. Find the starting hole on the spool. Insert one end of the line through this hole and pull a few inches through to create a secure anchor point.
3. Hold the spool firmly with one hand to prevent rotation while winding.
4. Wind the line in the direction indicated by the arrows on the spool. Winding against the arrow direction causes the line to bind and tangle during use.
5. Maintain even tension as you wind. Loose windings create gaps that lead to uneven feeding.
6. Continue winding until the spool is full but not overpacked. Leave a small gap near the rim to allow the line to seat properly when the spool is reinstalled.
7. Leave a tail of approximately 2 inches protruding from the spool to facilitate easy threading during installation.

Take care not to overlap lines or create crossed windings. A well-wound spool should appear neat and uniform from all angles.

Installing the Spool

With the spool wound and ready, reinstall it carefully to ensure proper function:

1. Align the spool with the housing and insert it gently into place.
2. Engage the retention mechanism by pressing, twisting, or snapping the spool according to your model’s design.
3. Verify that the spool rotates freely without binding or resistance.
4. Thread the line ends through the exit holes on the trimmer head. Both ends should extend evenly from the housing.
5. Pull gently on both lines to confirm they are seated correctly and will feed smoothly during operation.

If the line does not feed freely, remove the spool and recheck the winding direction and tension.

Testing the Trimmer

Before returning to regular use, test the trimmer to confirm the new line is functioning properly:

1. Reconnect the spark plug wire or restore power to electric models.
2. Start the engine and let it idle briefly to ensure smooth operation.
3. Activate the trimmer at low speed and observe how the line feeds from both sides.
4. Check for tangles, binding, or uneven deployment and address any issues immediately.
5. Perform a light trimming test on grass or weeds to verify cutting performance.

If problems persist, disassemble the head again and inspect the line path, spool alignment, and exit holes for obstructions.

Comparing String Types

Different trimmer lines offer distinct advantages depending on your trimming needs. The table below compares common options:

Tips and Best Practices

Incorporate these expert tips to maximize the lifespan and performance of your trimmer line:

• Always wind in the correct direction as indicated by arrows on the spool to prevent binding.
• Maintain consistent tension during winding to avoid loose coils and uneven feeding.
• Store spare line in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent degradation.
• Replace line regularly rather than waiting for it to tangle or break completely.
• Clean the spool after each season of heavy use to remove accumulated debris.
• Keep exit holes clear by periodically checking and trimming any obstructions.
• Use the manufacturer-recommended diameter to ensure compatibility and optimal performance.

Following these practices reduces downtime and keeps your Homelite weed eater ready for any trimming challenge.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Even experienced users occasionally make errors when winding trimmer line. Recognizing these pitfalls helps you avoid them:

• Winding in the wrong direction causes the line to twist and bind inside the spool, leading to feeding problems.
• Overpacking the spool prevents the line from deploying smoothly and can damage the housing.
• Using the wrong line diameter results in poor cutting performance or failure to fit the spool properly.
• Neglecting to clean the spool allows debris to interfere with line movement and accelerates wear.
• Leaving the line too short reduces cutting reach and requires frequent stops to add more line.
• Failing to test the trimmer after installation means problems may go unnoticed until you are mid-job.

Addressing these issues proactively saves time and prevents frustration during yard work.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Often Should I Replace the Trimmer Line?

Replace the trimmer line whenever it becomes too short to cut effectively or begins to tangle inside the spool. For most users, this occurs every 10 to 20 hours of active trimming, depending on usage intensity and vegetation type. Regular inspection during maintenance checks helps identify wear before it impacts performance.

Can I Use Any Type of String on My Homelite Weed Eater?

While many trimmer lines are universal, Homelite recommends using line that matches the diameter specified for your model. Using line that is too thick can overwhelm the feed mechanism, while line that is too thin may break frequently. Always consult your owner’s manual or the trimmer head label for the correct size and type.

Why Is My Line Tangling Inside the Spool?

Tangling typically results from winding the line in the wrong direction, maintaining inconsistent tension, or overpacking the spool. It can also occur if debris is present inside the housing. Disassemble the spool, clean all components, and rewind carefully following the directional arrows to eliminate tangles.

How Do I Know When the Spool Itself Needs Replacement?

Inspect the spool for visible cracks, deep grooves, or warped areas that prevent smooth line movement. If the line continues to bind or fail to feed despite proper winding, the spool may be damaged beyond repair. Replacement spools are available from Homelite dealers or online retailers and should match your exact model number.

Can I Wind Both Sides of a Dual-Line Spool at Once?

Yes, dual-line spools are designed to accommodate two separate strands of line, one on each side. Wind each side independently, ensuring both strands are anchored securely and wound in the correct direction. Test both lines after installation to confirm even feeding and deployment.
