Understanding Dewalt Weed Eater Models
Dewalt offers several string trimmer families, each with a slightly different housing design. The most common lines are the 20V MAX XR brushless series, the 60V MAX FlexVolt series, and the older 18V NiCd models. Brushless units typically feature a sealed motor housing secured with Torx screws, while the FlexVolt models add a removable battery pack that slides into a dedicated compartment. Knowing which series you own determines the screw type, the number of fasteners, and whether you must detach the battery before opening. Check the model number on the label near the trigger; it usually reads something like DCST920, DCST970, or DCST990. Refer to the owner’s manual for a diagram of the specific fastener layout. This preliminary step prevents you from forcing the wrong tool onto a screw head and stripping it.
Tools and Safety Gear Needed
Gather the following items before you begin: a set of Torx drivers (typically T15 and T20), a small Phillips screwdriver, a 5 mm hex key, needle‑nose pliers, a clean lint‑free cloth, and a container for screws. Safety gear includes safety glasses, cut‑resistant gloves, and hearing protection if you plan to run the motor briefly for testing. Disconnect the battery pack completely; even a partially charged pack can deliver a surprise spark. If the trimmer has a corded option, unplug it from the outlet. Keep a magnetic tray or a piece of cardboard to organize screws by size and location. Having everything within arm’s reach reduces the chance of losing a tiny fastener inside the motor housing.
Preparing the Work Area
Choose a well‑lit, flat surface such as a workbench or a sturdy table. Lay down a clean shop towel or a silicone mat to protect the trimmer’s finish and to catch any debris. Ensure the area is free of flammable liquids, as the motor may emit a small amount of oil during disassembly. Position the trimmer with the cutting head facing away from you, and secure it lightly with a bench vise equipped with soft jaws or a strap clamp. This prevents the unit from rolling while you apply torque to the screws. Keep a small flashlight handy for peering into recessed areas once the housing is opened.
Step‑by‑Step Guide to Opening the Weed Eater
- Remove the battery pack by pressing the release latch and sliding the pack out. Verify the power indicator is off.
- Detach the cutting head: locate the retaining nut on the spool housing, hold the spool with one hand, and turn the nut counter‑clockwise with the appropriate wrench. Set the spool and line aside.
- Unscrew the outer housing bolts. Most Dewalt trimmers use four T15 Torx screws around the motor housing perimeter. Place each screw in the magnetic tray in the order removed.
- Gently separate the two halves of the motor housing. If resistance is felt, check for hidden clips near the trigger assembly; use a plastic pry tool to release them without marring the plastic.
- Disconnect the trigger wire harness by squeezing the connector tabs and pulling straight out. Label the connector with a piece of tape if you think you might forget its orientation.
- Lift the motor assembly out of the lower housing. You now have full access to the brushless motor, gear box, and cooling fan.
Accessing the Motor Housing
With the motor assembly free, inspect the motor housing for any signs of overheating, such as discoloration or melted insulation. Brushless motors are sealed, but the surrounding plastic can warp if the trimmer was run continuously at high load. Use a soft brush to remove dust from the cooling fins. If you need to replace the motor bearings, note the orientation of the bearing caps before removal; they are press‑fit and must be reinstalled in the same direction.
Removing the Cutting Head Assembly
The cutting head on most Dewalt models is a bump‑feed spool that threads onto a splined shaft. After loosening the retaining nut, pull the spool straight off. Inside the spool cavity you will find the line guide and a small spring that tensions the line. Clean the spring and guide with a solvent‑free degreaser, then dry thoroughly. If the line guide shows wear grooves, replace it to avoid uneven line feed.
Inspecting Internal Components
Check the gear box for metal shavings, which indicate gear wear. Rotate the output shaft by hand; it should turn smoothly without binding. Examine the electrical connections for corrosion, especially the battery contacts on the lower housing. Clean contacts with a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol. Verify that the trigger switch clicks cleanly and returns to the off position without sticking. If any component appears damaged, order the exact OEM part using the model number to maintain performance and safety.
Reassembly Tips
Reassembly is essentially the reverse of disassembly, but a few precautions ensure a tight, vibration‑free fit. First, apply a thin layer of dielectric grease to the battery contacts to prevent future corrosion. Align the motor assembly with the lower housing guides before pressing the halves together; forcing them can crack the plastic. Re‑install the Torx screws in a star pattern, tightening each to the torque specification listed in the service manual (usually 3–4 Nm). Reconnect the trigger harness, ensuring the connector clicks securely. Reattach the cutting head, tightening the retaining nut just enough to hold the spool without stripping the threads. Finally, slide the battery pack back in until the latch engages, then run the trimmer briefly at low speed to confirm smooth operation.
Comparison Table: Dewalt Weed Eater Models
| Model | Voltage | Motor Type | Housing Fasteners | Battery Style | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|

Best Practices for Maintenance
- Clean the air vents after every use to prevent motor overheating.
- Replace the trimmer line with the diameter recommended for your model; oversized line strains the motor.
- Lubricate the gear box annually with a light synthetic grease approved by Dewalt.
- Store the tool with the battery removed and the cutting head covered to avoid accidental line feed.
- Inspect the trigger switch and battery contacts monthly for corrosion.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
One frequent error is using a standard Phillips screwdriver on Torx screws, which strips the heads and makes removal difficult. Another mistake is forgetting to disconnect the battery, risking a short circuit when the trigger harness is unplugged. Over‑tightening the housing screws can crack the plastic ribs, leading to vibration and eventual housing failure. Some users attempt to pry the housing apart with a metal screwdriver; this gouges the sealing surfaces and allows moisture ingress. Finally, neglecting to label the trigger connector often results in reversed polarity, causing the motor to run backwards or not start at all.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I open the trimmer without removing the battery?
No. Always remove the battery pack before any disassembly. Even a low‑charge pack can deliver enough current to cause a shock or damage the electronics when connectors are separated.
What size Torx bits do I need?
Most 20V MAX models use T15 screws, while the 60V FlexVolt series typically uses T20. Verify your specific model in the service manual before purchasing bits.
How often should I clean the motor housing?
Inspect and clean the housing vents after every 10–15 hours of operation, or more frequently in dusty conditions. A clean motor runs cooler and lasts longer.
Can I use any trimmer line?
Use only the line diameter specified for your model (usually 0.080 in or 0.095 in). Incorrect line size can jam the spool, overload the motor, and void the warranty.
What if a screw is stripped?
Apply a rubber band over the stripped head and press the Torx bit firmly while turning slowly. If that fails, use a screw extractor kit designed for small Torx fasteners.
Conclusion
Opening a Dewalt weed eater is a straightforward process when you follow the correct sequence, use the proper Torx tools, and observe safety precautions. By identifying your model, gathering the right equipment, and proceeding methodically, you can access the motor housing, cutting head, and internal components for cleaning, line replacement, or repair. Regular maintenance—cleaning vents, lubricating gears, and inspecting electrical contacts—extends the life of the tool and keeps it performing at peak power. Remember the key steps: remove the battery, detach the cutting head, unscrew the housing, disconnect the trigger harness, and inspect the internals before reassembling in reverse order. With this knowledge, you can confidently tackle any service task and keep your Dewalt string trimmer ready for the next job.
