Types of Weed Eater String and Feed Systems

Weed eaters use two main types of string feed systems, each with its own loading process and use case. The most common systems are bump feed and fixed line, and understanding the difference between them will help you load your string correctly the first time. Bump feed systems automatically advance the string when you tap the bottom of the trimmer head on the ground, making them ideal for beginners and for users who cut a mix of grass and light weeds. Fixed line systems require you to manually pull out more string when it wears down, which gives you more control over string length and reduces waste, making them better for heavy-duty use on thick brush and overgrown areas. Most residential weed eaters come with a bump feed system as standard, while professional-grade models often use fixed line for durability and efficiency.

Tools and Materials You’ll Need

Loading string in a weed eater requires only a few simple tools and materials, most of which you likely already have on hand. Before you start, gather the following items to make the process as smooth as possible:

• Replacement weed eater string (correct diameter and length for your model)
• Sharp scissors or a dedicated string trimmer blade for cutting
• Work gloves to protect your hands from sharp string edges
• Clean, dry cloth for wiping away debris from the spool housing
• Small flathead screwdriver (only if your model has a retaining screw holding the spool in place)

You won’t need any specialized tools for most standard weed eater models, so you can complete the entire process in 5 to 10 minutes with these basic supplies.

Safety Precautions Before Starting

While loading string in a weed eater is a low-risk task, taking a few simple safety precautions will prevent injury and damage to your tool. First, always disconnect the power source before you start working on the trimmer head: for gas-powered models, remove the spark plug wire to prevent accidental startup, and for cordless models, take out the battery. Wear work gloves to avoid cuts from the sharp edges of new string, which can easily slice through skin. Work on a flat, stable surface to avoid dropping the trimmer, and make sure the weed eater is cool to the touch if you were using it recently, as the motor and exhaust can get very hot during use. These steps only take a few seconds, but they eliminate all risk of accidental injury or tool damage.

Step-by-Step: Loading String in a Bump Feed Weed Eater

Bump feed weed eaters are the most common type for residential use, and loading string in them is a quick, simple process. Follow these steps to load string correctly the first time:

1. Disconnect the power source first: For gas-powered weed eaters, remove the spark plug wire to prevent accidental startup. For cordless models, take out the battery. This is the most important safety step to avoid injury while working on the trimmer head.
2. Remove the spool cover: The spool housing is located at the bottom of the trimmer head. Twist it counterclockwise (left) to loosen and remove the cover. Most models have a clear marking indicating which direction to twist.
3. Take out the old spool and clean the housing: Pull the empty spool out of the housing, and use a clean cloth to wipe away any cut grass, dirt, or debris inside the housing. Buildup can cause the string to jam or not advance properly.
4. Prepare the new string: Cut a 10 to 15 foot length of replacement string (check your manual for the exact recommended length for your model). Use sharp scissors or a string trimmer blade to get a clean cut, which prevents fraying.
5. Wind the string onto the spool: Insert one end of the string into the small anchor hole on the side of the spool. Wind the string evenly around the spool in the direction indicated by the arrow printed on the spool (almost always clockwise). Leave 6 to 8 inches of string sticking out of the anchor hole when you’re done – this is the portion that will feed out when you bump the trimmer.
6. Reassemble and test: Place the loaded spool back into the housing, aligning any tabs or notches on the spool with the housing. Twist the cover clockwise until it is tight and secure. Reconnect the power source, then tap the bottom of the trimmer head on the ground while the weed eater is running to test that the string advances correctly.

If the string does not advance when you tap the bottom, double-check that you wound it in the correct direction and that the spool is seated properly in the housing.

Step-by-Step: Loading String in a Fixed Line Weed Eater

Fixed line weed eaters require a slightly different loading process, as they use two separate pieces of string instead of a single wound length. Follow these steps to load string in a fixed line model:

1. Disconnect the power source: Just like with the bump feed model, remove the spark plug wire for gas trimmers or the battery for cordless models to avoid accidental startup.
2. Remove the spool cover and old spool: Twist the spool housing counterclockwise to remove the cover, then pull out the old empty spool.
3. Clean the housing: Wipe away any debris, cut grass, or dirt from the inside of the housing to prevent jams.
4. Prepare the new string: Cut a 10 to 12 foot length of string, then fold it exactly in half to create a loop at the midpoint. This loop will anchor the string to the spool.
5. Wind the string onto the spool: Insert the midpoint loop into the anchor notch on the spool. Wind each half of the string evenly around the spool in opposite directions (or the same direction, depending on your model’s instructions) so they don’t cross or tangle. Leave 6 inches of string hanging out of the small notches on either side of the spool.
6. Reassemble the trimmer: Place the loaded spool back into the housing, making sure the two string ends align with the eyelets on the trimmer head. Replace the spool cover and twist it clockwise until tight.
7. Test the string feed: Reconnect the power source, then gently pull both string ends to release them from the spool notches. Turn on the weed eater and let it run for a few seconds to make sure the string is feeding correctly. Trim any excess string with the built-in blade or scissors to the recommended 6 inch length.

Fixed line systems waste less string than bump feed models, but they do require occasional manual adjustment as the string wears down.

How to Trim and Adjust String Length After Loading

After loading new string, you’ll need to trim it to the correct length to ensure optimal performance. Most weed eaters have a small plastic or metal blade mounted on the bottom of the trimmer guard designed specifically for trimming string. To use it, turn on the weed eater and hold the trimmer so the string is extended, then rotate the head so the string touches the blade – it will cut the string to the perfect length in seconds. If your model doesn’t have a built-in blade, use sharp scissors to trim the string to 6 inches, which is the standard recommended length for most weed eaters. For bump feed models, you can also adjust the string length by tapping the bottom of the trimmer on the ground while it’s running – each tap advances the string by about half an inch. Avoid letting string get longer than 6 inches, as it creates excess drag, reduces battery or fuel efficiency, and makes the trimmer harder to control. If the string is shorter than 3 inches, it won’t cut effectively and will put unnecessary strain on the motor.

Troubleshooting Common String Loading Issues

Even when you follow the steps correctly, you may run into minor issues when loading string. Here are the most common problems and their quick fixes:

• String won’t advance when bumping (bump feed models): First, check that you wound the string in the correct direction (follow the arrow on the spool). Make sure the spool is seated properly in the housing, and that there is no debris jamming the feed mechanism. If the string is too short, it may not reach the feed slot, so pull out an extra 2-3 inches of string and test again.
• String breaks frequently after loading: This is usually caused by using string that’s too thin for the weeds you’re cutting, or winding the string too tightly around the spool, which causes it to snap under tension. It can also happen if you’re hitting rocks, concrete, or other hard surfaces while cutting. Switch to a thicker string diameter if you’re cutting heavy vegetation, and avoid cutting near hard obstacles.
• String tangles inside the spool: Tangles almost always happen when the string is wound unevenly, or you used too much string for the spool. Always wind the string tightly and evenly, and only use the amount of string recommended for your model. If a tangle occurs, remove the spool and unwind the string, then rewind it correctly.
• Weed eater won’t start after loading string: This is rarely caused by the string itself – most often, it’s because you forgot to reconnect the spark plug wire or battery after reassembling the trimmer. Double-check that the power source is connected properly, and that the spool is installed correctly (an installed backwards spool can jam the motor).

Choosing the Right String for Your Weed Eater

Using the correct string for your weed eater and the type of weeds you’re cutting is critical for performance and tool longevity. The wrong string can damage your motor, break constantly, or cut poorly. Most weed eaters work with string diameters between .065 and .095 inches, but you should always check your user manual for the maximum diameter your model can handle. In addition to diameter, you can choose between round and square cross-section string: square string cuts more cleanly and aggressively, making it a good all-purpose choice, while round string is better for light edging work around delicate plants, as it’s less likely to damage tree bark or flower stems.

Weed Eater String Maintenance Best Practices

Proper maintenance of your weed eater string and spool will extend the life of your tool and reduce how often you need to load new string. Follow these simple tips to keep everything running smoothly:

• Store replacement string in a dry, cool place to prevent rust and corrosion, especially if you live in a humid climate.
• Always wind new string tightly and evenly around the spool to avoid tangles and jams.
• Clean the spool housing every time you load new string to remove cut grass, dirt, and debris that can build up over time.
• Replace string when it wears down to less than 3 inches in length – running the weed eater with very short string overworks the motor and can cause premature wear.
• If you have a bump feed model, tap the bottom of the trimmer gently on the ground to advance the string – tapping too hard can damage the feed mechanism.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Loading String

Many users run into avoidable issues when loading string by making simple, easy-to-fix mistakes. Avoid these common errors to make the process faster and reduce frustration:

• Winding the string in the wrong direction: Almost all spools have an arrow printed on them indicating the correct winding direction. Winding the string backwards will cause it to jam and not advance properly, so always double-check the arrow before you start winding.
• Overfilling the spool: It’s tempting to add extra string to avoid having to reload soon, but overfilling causes tangles, jams, and poor feeding. Only wind the amount of string recommended for your model, and leave the small gap at the end of the spool to allow the string to move freely.
• Using the wrong string diameter: Using string that’s too thick for your weed eater can overload the motor, cause excessive wear, and even break internal components. Using string that’s too thin will break constantly when cutting thick weeds. Always refer to your user manual for the correct diameter range for your model.
• Skipping the safety step of disconnecting power: Failing to disconnect the spark plug or battery before working on the trimmer head can lead to accidental startup, which can cause serious cuts or injuries. This step only takes a few seconds and eliminates all risk of accidental startup.
• Not trimming excess string after loading: Leaving string longer than the recommended 6 inches causes excess drag, reduces battery or fuel efficiency, and makes the weed eater harder to control. Always trim the string to the correct length after loading to ensure optimal performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I load new string in my weed eater?

You’ll need to load new string every 2 to 4 hours of regular use, depending on the thickness of the weeds you’re cutting and the diameter of the string you’re using. If you notice the string is shorter than 3 inches, or it’s breaking frequently, it’s time to replace it. Bump feed models may require more frequent adjustments if you’re cutting very thick vegetation, as the string wears down faster.

Can I load string without removing the spool from the weed eater?

Some newer bump feed models allow you to load string without fully removing the spool by accessing the spool housing through a small port on the trimmer head. However, most models require you to remove the spool completely to load new string correctly. Check your weed eater’s user manual to confirm if your model supports this feature, as forcing string into a closed housing can cause tangles and jams that are difficult to fix.

Why does my string keep jamming after loading?

String jams are almost always caused by uneven winding, using too much string, or winding the string in the wrong direction. Make sure you wind the string tightly and evenly around the spool, following the direction arrow printed on the spool. If you’re using a fixed line model, make sure the string ends are properly seated in the notches on the spool before reinstalling it. Removing debris from the housing before loading new string also prevents jams caused by buildup.

Is it better to use bump feed or fixed line string?

There’s no universal “better” option – it depends on your use case. Bump feed systems are more convenient for beginners and for users who cut a mix of grass and light weeds, as they automatically advance the string as it wears. Fixed line systems are better for heavy-duty use, as they waste less string and give you more control over the length, but they require more manual adjustment. Choose the system that matches your typical yard care needs for the best experience.

Can I use any type of string in my weed eater?

No, you should always use the string type and diameter recommended by your weed eater’s manufacturer. Using string that’s too thick can overload the motor, cause premature wear, and even break internal components. Using string that’s too thin will break frequently and won’t cut thick weeds effectively. If you’re unsure of the correct string for your model, check the user manual or the label on the old spool before purchasing replacement string.
